Title: Sunset Overdrive - Now Out On PC
Post by: MCD on May 08, 2014, 03:23:47 AM
Quote
EDIT2: Couple of pics... best I can do at work. It's a ten page feature!

1 - GIANT LASER EYED FIZZIE. Shit yes!

2 - Insomniac says: "We've really begun to understand what we love the most. I think that's reflected in the tone of Sunset Overdrive"

3 - graphics looks BEAUTIFUL - very colourful and vibrant... even more so than PVZ.

4 - City is giving me a crackdown X Jet set radio vibe

5 - (edit) I hereby name this game Sunset Wowverdrive

EDIT 3: Some quotes, courtesy of u/dodmaster

"Sunset Overdrive mixes platforming and shooting throughout, and places equal weight on both skills"

"We wanted to take the shooter genre away from cowering behind cover. You'll be rewarded for jumping over that cover and taking the fight to the enemy"

And its this that makes Sunset Overdrive feel new. If a trend is emerging at all from the new console generation, it's that wall running is the new cover, and attack is the new defence. We've spent the best part of a decade lurking behind bullet-chipped masonry. For Insomniac, it's time to come out into the sun.

"We wanted to take the shooter genre away from cowering behind cover. You'll be rewarded for jumping over that cover and taking the fight to the enemy"

well at least someone fucking gets it. I'm still reeling from that SRIV review where the critic bemoaned the lack of a cover system. If you've got this futuristic ass graphics you need to be able to kill a bunch of baddies by shooting them in the face. None of this hiding behind concrete barricades; getting your toys ready.

It's one of the most visually appealing games Insominac has done in about... 20 years. But gameplay wise is TBD. Resistance was blech. I'm not overly fond of Ratchet and Spyro's been dead a long time (and hasn't been under their wheelhouse in years).

But let's be real: This is probably dead on arrival being an X-box exclusive. Who thought that was a good idea?

"And firepower of an Insomniac shooter."

Oh dear... oh deary me. :zzz :zzz :zzz :zzz :zzz gameplay incoming. Still, though: It sounds really interesting a good change of pace from the normal shooter tropes now a days. Too bad it's exclusive to one-platform that is doing pretty badly. I know MS wants it to be a "system seller" to people that like Insomniac games, but I really can't see them jumping to X-box for one title.

Whenever I get an Xbone I'll buy this game simply because of how fun the movement looks. That said, if the combat is going to consist of shooting those samey looking special fellow zombies then I could imagine that getting boring real quick. If they're smart they'll have a bunch of stuff for you to collect and a progression system in place like in Crackdown.

IIRC there is a character creator plus the trailer showed a female (implied to be another human player) so you should be able to change that.

Plus apparently the voices for the single player stuff have a male and female variant

yeah, mutants in crackdown 2 and infamous 2 sucked.  it'd be nice if it's more like dead rising.

also looks a little slow and stilted.  it's lacking momentum of something.  other than that, looks really fun.

Not impressed at all. It looks okay but the amount of hype people have really shows how desperate people are for next Gen titles. Looks like Dead Rising mixed with Ratchet and a helping of Ninja Gaiden. More than that, it is by Insomniac. It will probably be a decent game, hardly looks like something worth spending 500 (or even 400) dollars on. Looks like a C title you'd buy from the discount bin at Gamestop two years after it came out or at the end of the generation when you're looking for hidden kusoge.

I'm sure Y2kev got wet by that trailer at least.

Eh, I like the gameplay. What bothers me more is the wallrunning around the corner. Like... the dude didn't even grab a rail or anything to get around it, just did it because "LOL GAMEPLAY" looks awful animation-wise. :yuck

I like the mobility options. I think that's one of the early things for this gen is increasing your options on that front and that stuff looks cool to me. That being said I was never overly a fan of the ratchet and clank stuff. So we'll see.

Insomniacs last few games have been so so. But now that they are on Xbox suddenly this is a hyped game  ???

Kind of feels like manufactured hype again, like with Titanfall.

I think this game looks kind of cool, I also enjoyed Resistance 1 and Ratchet. Just really surprised at the expectations people have suddenly.  Same goes for Bungie really. I didn't like Halo 3 and I don't think they are that great, they mainly were big cause of Halo 1 IMHO but now that they are multiplat Sony peeps hype Destiny up. Kind of weird.

Not saying anyone here is a fanboy cept MCD.

I prefer a legit honest hey this game looks like shit to me because insomniac has a sketchy track record or because of x, y or z, or a million other reasons. (or it looks good to me or whatever).

But yeah in place of that I'll take rude because that's legit and honest too at least.

There is a reason I go after you. I would probably go after you a lot less if Sony/Microsoft talk wasn't peppered into every discussion about an individual game. It's fine to be skeptical of anything. I'm skeptical of EVERYTHING. Just do it for the right reasons.

To be fair to Lager, I do agree that the hype for a lot of next Gen titles is manufactured or desperate. Sunset for instance looks okay, but I'm not understanding the "hype train" stuff as shown on the last page.

How do you measure a "hype train"? What defines a hype train? What level of posting or interest defines a hype train?

Or is it sometimes just easier to call something that doesn't interest me but does interest others a hype train.

Title: Re: Sunset Overdrive
Post by: Himu on May 09, 2014, 01:17:56 PM
I'm not measuring a hype train, I'm just noticing the amount of people who said they're hyped and are very excited for the title.

In this thread. On GAF?

If this wasn't a console exclusive and somebody said they were "hyped" does that constitute a hype train. It's videogames. Since when aren't people allowed to be excited for a videogame.

That's my last post in this thread for awhile on this subject because honestly until I see more footage I don't really care about the game. For me that's the case in 90% of titles or until I actually test out the game.

But just for the record a hype train imo is generally an unwarranted level of enthusiasm and excessive posting for something. Individually we are all allowed to be as hyped or non hyped for something as we want to be. The only reason this tends to come up as an issue in fact is when some people suddenly seem to care about what excites other people on GAF.

My issue is the same as its always been. Talk about the game. That can be negative or positive; Leave the GAF style analysis stuff on GAF. Because its annoying when that comes to dominate a thread.

EVERYTHING on GAF is a hype train. Because that is what that forum feeds on. No need to drag it over here.

Title: Re: Sunset Overdrive
Post by: Mupepe on May 09, 2014, 01:43:57 PM
Wouldn't it be easier to just say "i don't understand what some people find appealing about this title"?  The way you and Lager end up wording it makes it seem like a conspiracy at worst and group think at best when instead some people are just excited for a title.  As for me, I don't understand why so many people care about what others find exciting.  Just like those guys on GAF who rage that some people enjoy mobile titles or a kinect/waggle game.

I think they lost themselves. Fuse is symbolic of that. It was trying to be dark and grim and semi-realistic. It was a very mediocre game. That's not what these guys do very well. At least this looks more in line with their strengths.

Resistance 3 was a good game.

i really hated the invisible walls, and artificial lock-out points where you couldn't go backwards.  i like an FPS like Half-Life where they give you more space to experiment.  a good example is when R3 does the whole Ravenholm-homage from Half-Life 2, but it's not nearly as good or fun.  overall the series was really disappointing, i mean they killed off the main potagonist and no one cared.

Looks fun, love the use of motion blur and animations; Insomniac's also had a good "Pixar-like" animation style with their cartoony stuff.
Going from the videos, I kind of agree with the "moves too slow" if you're looking at it from a Jet Set Radio viewpoint of fast high-speed platforming and grinding game, which it doesn't appear to be, which is fine.

I'll grab it for sure in a couple of years when I pick up a system for Crackdown 3.

only played the first hour or so, but i agree with others initial impressions.  the game, despite being set in an open-world setting, could not feel more unique.  it's a nice change of pace after the dreary setting of Mordor.

the two people i was watching the opening sequences with were genuinely laughing at the jokes and giving me funny ideas for customization of the character, and generally making me feel like a kid again really.

seems like MP would be a lot of fun too, has anyone tried it yet?

dayum, you smoked through that game!  thanks for the impressions, glad it was good, and yeah, Mordor lets you finish the open-world stuff after the end game too, which is always nice.

waiting for this weekend, but now i gotta work half of sunday. :trash

still free Saturday if anyone wants to try mp, i'll try to clock in as many hours as i can.

How long did it take you?

Also how does fast travel work? I just did the tutorial for it and it says to just press A but I'm jamming A on the map and it didn't warp me? I wound up just running back to complete the mission. I'm assuming I missed something obvious.

I'm with you on tower defense, but if it weren't mentioned here, i probably wouldn't have realized that's what i was engaging in with this game.

I wouldn't let it deter you, if you were thinking about getting it and didn't like tower defense.

I played about five hours over the weekend, just getting collectibles and had a lot of fun.   my only problem is the protagonist's quippy cornball remarks.  like

"oh look there go some guys about to be dead"   :snoop

The Tower Defense in this game, if that's what you want to call it, is pretty forgiving. It's really more of a horde mode and you have plenty of ammo and AOE weapons to protect your position. They can do quite a bit of damage and you still pass the mission.

Is it worth buying collectable maps or is it a waste of money? I'd rather divert those funds to actual guns and I think I heard that currency can be limited in this game.

I misheard how much overcharge you get from the weekly challenges, but ah well more gameplay for me. I've collected everything and am 19 achievements away from a 100%

32 hours of game time so far. I really need to try multiplayer at some point. So I can finally buy all the weapons with the overcharge from that, got two weapons left. Bought all the clothes and amps, got gold medals in all the challenges, collected everything and basically did everything single player can give me. Took me 30 hours of gameplay with some dicking around, so not bad, especially since I'm still not tired of it.

Easily my game of the year. I recommend it to anyone and everyone who has an XBone. I really hope this sells, I want more of this. Hopefully the bundle and new price make it a big seller.

yeah i'm trying to convince a friend to bite the bullet on an xbox one.  we played 360 all the time, but the One hasnt had a lot of good exclusives until this really.

The only beef I have with this game so far is that rolling out your weapon loadout is hard when all the enemy types are in play and keeping something that is strong against all types is hard. Fizzco Bots only have very few weaknesses so you have to dump ammo like freeze blats and dump AK-FU rounds in. Once you run out, you are fucked. Even firing High Fidelity rounds with an amp strong against bots like Freeze amps does fuck all damage.

Also holy shit fuck Muggers and scab rushers.

feels good to rule over people who have lives and have played less than me.

As someone actively trying to beat your scores, I appreciate the honesty.

Holy shit, the music, disagree!  Shit is like terribad Green Day cover bands.  I had to turn it off due to the repetitive obnoxious guitar riffs, which creates the lame side effect of cutting out Sound FX from cutscenes.   :goty2

I can appreciate the 90s MTV vibe hey were going for, but I think licensed tunes would've been welcome.

Also people saying the dialog gets better...not sure when, cause I'm ten hours in; it still sucks, and is rife with juvenile dick humor, on par with Bulletstorm, but possibly worse.

I sound negative, but I love the gameplay.  The sweet, sweet gameplay.

I’m the same way: maps first. It prevents boredom or frustration through backtracking later.

And I’m talking out of my ass here, because I haven’t played this game, but keeping to lower-powered weapons might be one way to keep the game interesting if you find it too easy.

Alright so maybe I am missing something.  I just did Buck's challenge and it tells me to bounce and kill them but the way it counts the kills seems to be random to me.  I shoot them, I smash them, I blow them up and it doesn't count anything and then all of a sudden it does.  Same thing with the blower kills.  I assume I'm doing something wrong?

As someone who consistently buys PC versions, i gotta say, Forza 2 is no slouch.  Looks great.  if you already own an XBO no reason not to bite at $30 on Black Friday.  sure the extra 30fps would be nice for a racing game, but again, it looks great at 1080p 30, and if it is coming to PC will still dont know when or if it'll be a good port.

Got about halfway through. That's the most fun game I've played this year. The traversal is the best system of those kind I've ever played. It makes stuff like Bio Infinite and AC creed seem completely distinguished mentally-challenged and backwards. The game is even funny. It starts off grating. But it hits its stride and charm as it keeps going. I have a bunch of extra credits coming in via xbox rewards on the next deposit so I will absolutely buy it then. That game is fucking great. And its a fucking videogame and it knows it a videogame unlike all the other bullshit wanna be movie shit people are making. Fucking Impressive. And I've never really been that a big a fan of insomniac.

I just think a lot of games are designed incorrectly. Most games nowadays feel like the team had a good idea but its almost like how can we slip this good idea into our very traditional x genre game enough times so that it feels worthwhile. Instead of completely designing your game around the good idea. Sunset Overdrive is completely designed around the good ideas they have. It's not a game where the good idea is put in level 2 and then maybe reappears in level 5. The whole fucking game is designed around the fun of the good idea. And you feel it when you play it.

I think a big part of this is that games are designed around "cinematic experiences" and "narratives" these days and both of those things fall well below average when compared to the experience they're trying to copy or other mediums. Games are afraid to be games.
Title: Re: Sunset Overdrive

I just keep thinking of Bioshock infinite. Which when you think about it has a lot of the same elements of overdrive. Plasmid powers. Assortment of guns. Rails. But there's never any moments of joy/real fun in that game. It never feels cohesive design wise. It feels like a game where the good ideas are viewed as not as important as a whole bunch of other stuff. It's like let's pepper in the fun very rigidly and sparsley because god forbid the fun of a game overwhelm whatever faux gravitas we are trying to build in the world.

We have gotten way off track with that stuff in recent years. I think a lot of games are guilty of it.

Played this all day, finished the story and a good chunk of the sidequests. The game is pretty fun, but the mission design is almost as repetitive as Destiny's. Nearly every mission has you either defend something or run out into the city and collect or kill X amount of whatever. It's like playing an MMO. But that doesn't bother me much because the traversal and combat are enjoyable. I even liked going after the collectibles because it's fun to simply navigate the city. It reminds me of Crackdown or Gravity Rush in that sense, although I'd say SO is better than either of them.

Hmm, what else. The graphics and art are awesome, the soundtrack is nice and it fits the game perfectly, but practically every song sounds exactly the same to me. I'm not a fan of the writing either; it's way too meta for my tastes with the constant pop culture references and 4th wall breaking. It never annoyed me or anything, though.

I'd buy this if were on sale for $30~ for black friday, but it doesn't look like there will be any good deals. I might just start up gamefly again to complete it.

You know how hard it would be to traverse across the landscape to follow stuff like this in Assassin's Creed. How often the character would be fumbling around as I try to manipulate him to do what I want.

So effortless in this game. And this isn't even doing anything actually cool or impressive. Just normal in the moment move around gameplay.

In this game I actually feel like a bad-ass moving through the environment. Those other games are supposed to empower me in this way but they don't.

Been hooked on this for the past 2 days and I have about 5 missions left. This and Bayonetta 2 are easily the best and most fun games I've played all year.

I fell off this game pretty hard but it's a pretty decent title. Even if the humor feels like it's written by a 40 yo desperately clinging to relevance by being edgy™.

It was an infamously turbulent project that will sadly not see enough sales to make up for the amount of money Microsoft has sunk into it though, which is a shame.

Sort of numbskulled to build a game around the least entertaining gameplay bit from Ratchet. Half an hour in, and I'm already fed up with rail grinding. Other than that, it feels responsive and such, and I guess the goofy and laidback style is a nice change of pace; I've been missing Ratchet so I guess this is as close as we will get for now.

Probably not a good idea to play this right after Infamous, though.

I thought this was way better than Infamous SS. You get more mobility options in the first few hours.

I haven't played second son yet, just first light which I thought was pretty rad. Maybe this game opens up with new weapons (though the distance-combat formula being so-so in the first place makes me doubt that) but at this point it feels pretty low budget. A mish mash of random R&C bits with a focus on the most boring bit of them all, fused together with beard-comedy.

I recently finished the campaign, been doing Chaos Squad which is -ok- but theres no particular strive to be first, second, or even last place. I just try to get the achievements and move on.

Why? Is the game just not doing well enough?  :(

Xbox One isn't really doing well enough to nurture exclusive and original IP. The whole industry is still dealing with the AAA-or-die (now: AAA-and-die) cycle established last-gen.

There's a secret collectible in this game, it's stick figure graffiti. Press Y on them, there's 12 and here's a map to find them:

The movement felt so damn good in Sunset Overdrive. After sunset overdrive I couldn't play Assassin's Creed anymore. I couldn't tolerate the movement in that franchise anymore. (Haven't played the last two games so maybe its gotten better)

Enjoying this way less than I expected. The traversal has no weight at all and feels kinda crappy like Ratchet grinding vs something like Tony Hawk or JSR. The weapons don't feel good and then I got to the first tower defense mission and I was just like fuck this I'm out. I hate TD with a passion and didn't realize SO has TD shit.

Hate to say it, but after giving it another hour yesterday, this game just does not click with me.
I really like Ratchet & Clank, so the concept of the weapon system from that game with all the leveling up of weapons + customization + sandbox + JSR sounds GREAT in concept.

But I really really hate the combat in Sunset Overdrive.
The platforming is ok, I think it moves too fast and floaty for its own good and getting the collectibles never feels like much because you just zoom by them. My favorite missions so far are the platforming challenges, those give me JSR call backs (with a bit of Just Cause mini-games?) and are pretty fun.

But the combat is so boring, even with the fun weapons. The enemies are just zzzzzz and feel like spam there's so many of them. Having to always keep moving for me got old really really fast, mostly just shooting while grinding around the enemies over and over and over.

The mission design early on seems really bad too, like Insomniac's first attempt at an open world. Just feels really weak compared to their linear level design in Ratchet or even the Resistance games and the world feels really empty. This is like the early X360 sandbox era where people were jumping in before they knew how to make sandbox gaming fun. Honestly, not having playing Spider-Man yet, I think Sony was batshit insane to give an open-world Spiderman to Insomniac after SO, especially when they had another studio that actually had experience in open world superhero games with Sucker Punch and Infamous.

I'm probably done after 2 sessions and maybe 3 hours of this. It's one of those games I want to love but it just does not click with me at all and I'm not having any fun  :'(

I wanted to like this game too and even bought the white Xbox One bundle partly for it.
Between the humor rarely landing and some initially lackluster mission design—base defense with waves of spammy horde like enemies—it turned me off enough that I dropped it after a few hours.
