Title: Xbox Games with Gold
Post by: chronovore on June 18, 2014, 09:36:41 PM
October GWG - sorry I didn't update the thread. I'm giving up on Gold next month, since I haven't turned on my 360 more than once a month, and only to grab GWG titles that are region-blocked half the time anyway.

Thanks, demi!

PS: mods should feel free to update the OT any time they like.

It's an RPG from the maker of Dishwasher and Vampire Smile, a young, solo "indie" developer with lots of backing from Microsoft who has some decent design ability and the art skills of an angry 15-year-old with a Pee-Chee Folder and a Bic.

Hey, he made the I Made A Game With Zombies In It game too, which was pretty much the best zombie game and final word on that trend which has of course still continued to lumber on like a zombie would.

Yes, they patched the glitched achievement the other day.

XBO: Guacamelee, Max (repeat)
360: Battleblock Theater, Gotham City Imposters

lol at the repeat already although max is a surprisingly good game.

The two 360 games are good also. Gotham City imposters is a good under-rated mp shooter.

No retail games(even on 360) and one of the games is a repeat?  :fbm

Guacamelee makes up for it to me as long as they don't keep doing repeats. Been wanting to try it even though I've had it from an indie bundle for a while.

Kinda excited for Gotham City Imposters; almost bit several times at sale prices, but worried about finding a game. If it's free, it's going to be a dog pile.

Its not free. Morons cant read descriptions and titles on Xbox.com well.

Buy a BONE already, Scenester. Ghotham City Imposters might as well be a sweaty nutsack to the face.

Guacamelee is awesome, either way. But getting 1000 pts over a meager 400 makes BONE version superior.

August GWG

ONE: Crimson Dragon & Strike Suit Zero

360: Motocross Madness & Dishonored

Quote
For the month of August, Xbox Live Gold members can look forward to two new free games on both Xbox One and Xbox 360. Crimson Dragon and Strike Suit Zero will become free downloads on August 1st, replacing current Xbox One Games with Gold titles Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition and Max: The Curse of Brotherhood. Now is a good time download those two if you haven’t already.

On Xbox 360, starting Friday, August 1st, Motocross Madness (normally US $9.99) will be free for Xbox Live Gold members through August 15th.
Then on August 16th, Xbox Live Gold Members can download Dishonored (normally US $19.99) for free through August 31st.

It's actually pretty fun, though I don't know how serious you are about your arcade-style racers. Motorcycle racer, at that. You do stunts to gain boost, and then boost to pull off better stunts. Tracks have the standard Midtown Madness/Midway Rush style shortcuts which can be beneficial unless you biff it, then you're hurting. Rubberband AI like a motherfucker, so don't think you can slip up on higher level tracks.

There's also an open-world exploration mode where you go around in a collect-a-thon, which I am not fond of because the non-race feel of the controls is slippery.

I have played 12 hours of it, and am always happy to go back to it. It's relaxing, for a race game.

I've GOT TO quit playing World of Tanks and get on to a real game like Dishonored. I really dig this type of game, and I'm hoping it's playable on standard controller rather than KB/M. There are some crazy videos from PC players out there WRECKING the AI.

co-op stealth/action game.

It's not bad.

It's a top-down, multiplayer stealth game, where each player has a special ability which allows every map to be played differently depending on the player's class or combination of classes in play.

I look at it like multiplayer Pac-Man with Perks.

It's pretty fabulous. It's good in single, but really gets fun in multi.

Played solo, the game is fun.
Played with randoms, I can only imagine that they make life more difficult.
Played with people who communicate what they're doing, it's a lot of fun.

I guess it’s not so weird. They’re both old games you can get on disc at Gamestop from their bargain bin, so it’s not like they’re slipping everyone a free copy of the latest Forza.

Not sure if I should be happy or sad about Halo REACH, the download conks out at 80%, so I can’t play it. OTOH, I can’t play it.
Title: Re: Games with Gold: Chariot, Bad Company 2, Darksiders 2

Bad Company 2 is up.

Ubisoft is also putting a mess of their stuff on sale. Assassins Creed series has a number of entries discounted, and I’ve just picked up AC: Liberation HD for US$5.

Splinter Cell and Far Cry are also be-cheapened.

Beyond Good and Evil is also out there at 75% off.

So... neither HALO REACH nor Bad Company 2 will complete the download for me. Purchase on 360 was blocked, purchase on Xbox.com went through, but download self-corrupts at 80%.

Is anyone else outside the USA having trouble with this last couple of games?

Wow! I didn’t know VP had a sequel other than that collection of party games, Party Animal, or whatever.

Quote
Rare indicated that, with the sequel, they have "perfected the food chain", increasing the variety of items which piñatas will eat and the results which will occur when they do.[9] This is intended to reduce the repetitive "instruct each piñata to eat every possible item" activity which was sometimes required in the earlier title.

Well, that’s pretty darned great!

Also, on Xbone, isn’t Volgarr supposed to be pretty darned good?

Today’s the last day for the Viva Piñata sequel; tomorrow 360’s GWG selection becomes Red Faction Guerrilla, easily the most under appreciated open world game of last-gen. I hope the newbies are playing multiplayer still when I get back to my 360 in a couple weeks!

Greeeeat.  I bought the games-on-demand version of SSX on sale, months ago. Only played a little.

Never even heard of Raven.

The Raven is a point and click adventure that's based on generic Agatha Christie characters and settings.

Your playable protagonist is 'I Can't Believe its Not Hercule Poirot".

January GWG:

D4 (XB1)
MX vs ATV Alive (360)
Witcher 2 (360)

Quote
Three fantastic games across Xbox One and Xbox 360 will make sure you start your New Year off right. Xbox One gets the critically acclaimed indie adventure game D4: Dark Dreams Don’t Die (or D4 for short), while Xbox 360 gets off-road racer MX vs. ATV Alive, and the epic role-playing game The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings. As usual, all games are available only for a limited time, as part of the ongoing Games with Gold program – so find a buddy (or not), and jump in!

 * D4: Dark Dreams Don’t Die ($14.99 ERP): Available from January 1-31 on Xbox One
 * MX vs. ATV Alive ($19.99 ERP): Available from January 1-15 on Xbox 360
 * The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings ($29.99 ERP): Available from January 16-31 on Xbox 360

Looking forward to trying Witcher.

unfortunate but I think the inherent problem is that if games with gold is just a dumping ground for indie titles, or lower budget material, you are teaching your audience not to purchase that material since you are gonna get it free in a couple of months.

It also didn't help that MS didn't really promote D4 at all. I think Sony does a better job of promoting that lower tier content where MS seems to save it all for the big titles.

I've never understood why MS ran away from Xbox Live Arcade. It was one of the great things about 360 early on and ever since then they've completely walked away from it year by year until the concept doesn't even really exist on the xbox one.

It ends up leaving an entire audience who only cares about the blockbuster stuff and looks at the free game of the month on xbox one as some indie shit that isn't worth their time.

You have to educate and promote your catalog. Especially the lower budget stuff.

XBLA from several years back became very difficult to be profitable on. It didn’t help that MS never changed up the “store” element of the Dashboard to make things more easily located, nor was enough effort put into curation.

Now that digital downloads for Games On Demand are becoming almost concurrent with the retail release of many games, and the XBLA size limitation has gradually been ablated, there’s nothing other than brand to separate GoD from XBLA, and the brand has been devalued by its lackluster performance.

Yeah, that I consider one of the greatest fuck-ups of the last generation. Microsoft was literally sitting on a goldmine and they got incredibly greedy which forced developers to run to every other platform.

I think MS is no more or less greedy than any other corporation. I honestly attribute it more to a large, corporate bureaucracy failing to adapt to changes in a nascent and fluid market.

While I never published directly on XBLA I've been involved in multiple talks with their publishing and legal teams over the years. One of the bigger changes I noticed is that their publishing contracts changed unfavorably in 2010. While contracts are always modified and catered to each individual company, 2010 was about when they started becoming overtly aggressive. Long story short Microsoft began adding unnecessary financial stipulations and often demanded platform exclusivity without much benefit to the developer, and even co-marketing options that was engineered to further reduce developer pay-outs.

The entire change was under the guise of "best market for indies" which was true the year before but 2010 saw a dramatic shift towards Steam and PS3 which rendered most of their argument invalid and grossly manipulative. One of the primary reasons you saw such a quick turn away in that time-frame and why a lot of heat was generated in the public eye in the following year by developers who were raked by Microsoft's legal team. There is a very concrete argument to be made that Microsoft is one of the primary reasons for Steam becoming the center of indie publishing.

We're basically making the same point, you're just a lot more courteous and erudite about it, lol.

Actually, you know more about it than I do. I’ve not dealt with MS’ as a publisher other than establishing the initial publisher contracts. Per project, those negotiations took place above my pay grade, and friends who have dealt directly with them have fumed but been appropriately discreet about the contract and legal details.

It has been really interesting to see the re-emergence of a humble Sony as being so supportive of indie developers, attempting to regain that edge that they had in the PS1 era, when they were a new force, an underdog. And it’s been sad to see MS fumble their lead this generation, and behave so reactively, eliminating the features which could have really set the Xbox One apart from its closest rival.

Well I still think you're right; Microsoft wasn't simply being greedy and I grossly overgeneralized it to a loaded adjective. They're a corporation and the people behind those decisions simply couldn't anticipate or react quickly enough to changing market conditions. What works for AAA disc-based development most certainly does not for Joe-Indie and they didn't/couldn't react to that in a timely fashion.

I just get a little passionate about it since I was a incredibly strong supporter of the movement and felt a bit saddened that MS kept their swagger when an increasingly demanding indie market was. Microsoft's reactions were understandable from their perspective however. Why would they kowtow to a couple of guys barely making minimum wage for an XBLA game when they have Activision in the other corner complying without issue?

Exactly right. Or, at least, we are in agreement. We may both be wrong: Based Gaben may have had highly placed moles in MS' Xbox division working to secure Steam's prevalence, which Steam has now squandered by encouraging a "wait for the sale" culture.

Ironically, I have not yet bought an XBone, so I don’t know if it works or not. Logically, you are purchasing the games for the active duration of your Xbox Live Gold account, so they should stay in your library as long as you are paid up.

After arguably one of Games With Gold's best months since its inception, just how would Microsoft follow it up? Well this April, to celebrate 100 million Games With Gold downloads, six games will be on offer to download. Before we get to those however, the usual reminder to pick up the excellent Rayman Legends and BioShock Infinite before they return to their normal prices next month.

To kick off this bumper month, let's start with the two Xbox One offerings for April. New release Pool Nation FX and Child of Light will be free to download on Xbox One throughout the entire month.

Moving onto the four Xbox 360 games now, the most recent Gears game, Gears of War: Judgment, and Terraria (Xbox 360) will be available from April 1st through to April 15th. Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag (Xbox 360) and Army of Two: The Devil's Cartel will then take over from April 16th until the end of the month.

I love that The Bore is such a welcoming community, where people are free to be wrong.

Thief is supposedly pretty great, except 'fridging a woman in the opening movie to gain male revenge rage points.

Massive Chalice is pretty neat, for a game which ceded ground to an angry transgender community which complained about their lack of representation in a medieval breeding simulation.

Title: Re: Games with Gold: June is Pretty Damned Great

A number of things.

I didn't build enough keeps early on. I started building other stuff to help my solider on the battlefield.
I build a sagecraft early and started sticking old people in there which reduced my available soldiers.
Accidentally married two young dudes and with horror realized I would have to wait the 70 years for them to die and replace them so no kids unless I kept adopting them.
Consequently started massively running out of people since I had almost no people being born to replace the ones who were dying of old age and combat. Which also means I couldn't pass down the weapons in the family since there was no next generation for some of the houses.

So I just said fuck it, instead of trying to dig myself out of this hole, just restart and plan better.

DIRT 3 isn't good?

I meant more the xbox one stuff. Dirt 3 is fine. I beat Dungeon Siege 3 along time ago. It's mediocre. Potentially worth it if you play with a friend but no way in hell I could drag myself through it alone.

At least the 360 stuff are usually actual retail games. The xbox one offerings tend to be a dumping ground for indie titles no one would actually buy.

Dragon Rising is a turd. But if it's still got that "explore the island" DLC ( :lol at a mil-sim DLCing that) it's worth picking that up and then just flying around the island for literal hours instead of playing the ultra bad campaign.

Take it from someone that Platinumed it on PS3.  :doge

Van Helsing is okay. I'd be willing to play that but I heard nothing but awful things about Thief.

The second Operation Flashpoint: Red River I liked. But that is the first one which I didn't like.
Castlestorm I actually like but its basically a mobile title.
And Sacred 2 is good but I also heard nothing but awful about Sacred 3.

Yup. And it fits in nicely with the game. They castroid you at the beginning, so you can try out a completely different build if you like. But I think there's an achievement tied to not picking up any augments.

I like Sacred Citadel; I had no idea it was associated with the Sacred series of RPG games. Color me thick.

I tried GoW2 at one point; the camera made me sick, which never happens in third-person perspective games.

Theres some geniune LOL shit in Gears of War 2.

Like in the first level the chick on the radio pipes up:

"Dom! We had a lead on the location of your wife!!! Uhhh, but, we lost it or something"

Dom:DAMMIT ALL TO FUCKING HELLLL ARGGHHGHGHG *bangs on a car hood*

Marcus:*hand on doms shoulder* Take all the time you need bud

THE BROMANCE. TEARS OF WAR BAYBEEEEEE. I remember my co-op partner laughing for like 2 minutes through my headset at that scene

edit: lol I found the cutscene and my wording is a bit off, but the words are totally to that effect.

Cutscene is funny af and at 0:10:55

It was bro-sterical.

I remember in GoW1, at least in singleplayer (non co-op), they never really make it clear that when Dom is knocked down there isn't really any time limit on catching up to him. Dom also never follows your directions about "stay put" or "guard this area" or whatever "SIT. STAY." is in Gear language. So I spent most of my time trying to fight my way to where the asshole had advanced, only to be killed right after I revived him.

Fuck Dom. That guy is an asshole.

I will look again at GoW2, but am worried that my camera sensitivity is heightened. I was unable to finish Blood Dragon due to it.  :'(

Well, if theres one good thing about GWG is that it gets old games' multi going again and its possible to get the cheevos au naturel. With Dead Island I just joined random games and knocked out all the multi stuff

Tron is a poor-man's Prince of Persia reboot, the colorful watercolor styled one. The gameplay is identical, but less well-polished.

I will probably d/l and play again for the multi cheevos.

I Am Alive was one of the best games on the 360 imo. You can tell the development was shaky but its a really cool adventure and truly a "survival" game, it's easier on the 2nd playthrough if youre going for collecitibles as they come with food/ammo iirc.  Nothing but awesome memories of the game, uses similar Ubi tech to ass crud in terms of the climbing, difference is the climbing really matters here. I'd recommend checking it out

What a shitty game to have inexorably tied to your name :rofl
Title: Re: Games with Gold, July: Grow Home, Runbow, Kane&Lynch2, LEGO PotC
Post by: The Sceneman on July 13, 2017, 08:12:43 AM
I'm pretty sure that Gerstmann was fired for his review of the original Kane and Lynch game.

Anyhow I downloaded K&L2 as it was free and C grade tps was my bread and butter back in the day. Holy shit does this game stink. The maps and enemy placement/movements are OK, the weapons in this game are beyond awful. Shotguns are crazy accurate and effective over long distances, but you get limited access to these and you're forced to use machine pistols over the first couple of levels, which basically involve hiding in cover and shooting 200 rounds to kill one baddie. Really poor and unsatisfying gameplay.

Best part of the game is the shaky digital camera style they went for, its truly pretty unique and a fun game world to manouvre through, and it also band-aids shitty texture pop in by making it "intentional". I've never played a game that masked it's technical shortcomings by a stylistic choice and I have to say its pretty cool. Video game historians may mention this one as some throwback chic someday

 Oops, you're right! :omg

Wasn't K&L2 liked more than the original? Surprised the compression artifacts and color separation effects weren't cloned by other games. It was a pretty unique visual effect for the time.

I'd rather kiss a toilet seat than play another "game" from Telltale. Fool me once etc.

I looked up Deadfall adventures and...

Quote
While one might think that corny lines and cheesy delivery are part and parcel of a low-budget outing like Deadfall, there's a difference between actors doing the best they can with the material they've got, and actors who don't even appear to be trying.  The main character's voice is flat and lifeless, completely lacking any of the charm one would expect to see in a roguish hero. In fact, it's really saying something that another actor stumbling through an atrocious German accent comes across as more pleasant.

Um, can I play this game now please? Gonna be all over this shit on the 15th

Yeah Deadfall Adventures actually looks like it could be campy fun, like B movie tier.   Check out the 2nd vid: http://store.steampowered.com/app/231330/Deadfall_Adventures/

overwhelming amount of positive reviews too, i think the steam reviewers are taking into account the budget this game had and reviewing accordingly

I bought it when it was on megasale, or maybe it had already been a GWG freebie? It's really miserable. Even with my obsessive compulsive tendencies, I couldn't finish it.

Just have fun in multi. The game is one of the most spirited, well-balanced online games I've ever played (though I'm no expert).

Plants v Zombies is really good. Tons of content. I'm still figuring out the game a bit but multi is pretty fun and I've been enjoying just running around the SP hub and finding stuff.

Theres some really crazy cosmetic customisation options but unfortunately it seems these are all randomly locked in loot crates which is a shame as I want more shit specifically for the CornCob character. Looks like you can get everything just by playing and theres nothing locked behind the microtransactions.

Your impression is correct! It's like the dev team heard they were gonna have to do microtransactions and were like "nah." It was even moreso in the first edition of the game. You could tell they were ready to charge for everything, but it can all be achieved just through normal play.

Damn theres a few "upgrade packs" on half-price sale atm - might pull the trigger on some of these cos the game is so good. Apparently the "Torch and Tail" pack saves a ton of grinding.

This one looks good too as it guarantees you a BBQ Corn https://www.microsoft.com/en-nz/p/plants-vs-zombies-garden-warfare-2-super-fertilizer-upgrade/bxjx44s2jcq8

Post by: The Sceneman on March 19, 2019, 11:43:57 PM
Yeah I'm loving it! I dropped like $20 on some booster packs because I think the base classes are a bit weak and wanted to speed up the grind a bit. Been enjoying the Vampire Sunflower, BBQ Corn and Captain Shark bite Classes. Knocked out the SP plant content - now onto the zombies. The missions are dull but provide tons of achievements and cash so it's all good

Supposedly ( I havent played either cause I heard NG3 was garbage ) NG3 Razor's Edge puts back the gore and blood into the game, dismemberment.. and I don't know exactly what else

NG3 was released unfinished; many combos weren't yet programmed into the game, there was only one weapon and one Ninpo despite having selection menus for both, and many game mechanics were missing. Master Ninja also ran at a very low FPS (around 10 at times) and so forth.

Razor's Edge is the completed game. All of the missing things in NG3 were present, framerate was high and stable, graphics were cleaner, much more content, etc. It's the final version of the game. Think of NG3 as a beta that was accidentally retailed, whereas Razor's Edge is the completed product as always intended. And it's good. Not as good as NG 1 or 2, but better than Sigma 2 by a lot.

Ninja Gaiden 3 sucks

Ninja Gaiden 3 Razor's Edge does not suck

I dunno maybe I should check it out? I love NG1 and 2

That reminds me that I should finally order a copy of Ninja Gaiden Black before it gets expensive. Right now you can get it for 20 bucks.

Razor's Edge is basically the WiiU game, with the improvements, additions and what not. I absolutely hated original NG3 (sent that bitch right back to gamefly)

I didn’t realize NG3 was unfinished.

Takes balls to release an unfinished game, then finish it and ask people to buy it again.

Guess it's one of those weirdly competent tie-in games someone actually put effort into?

Pretty much. I played it to 875/1000 GS, so I must have liked it enough. I remember some fun puzzles.

It's no Toy Story 3, which is the best of all tie-in games, but it's fun enough.

I’m sort of surprised to see Jedi star fighter or whatever. Feels like one of those games that would end up in rights hell.

Been meaning to pick up Styx. First one was one of my favourite stealth games released in a long time. Good month for me.

Telltale's shit'll probably be a stream for me and a friend to laugh at.

It’s not terrible. I couldn’t get into it but a lot of people recommended!

That was my feeling as well. Huge number of people feel it is a legit old-school revival platformer, but I couldn't get into it.

Sonic Generations is good (probably great, even)
Lord of Shadows 2 is not as good as the first

Batman is a free 1k achievements, and Shantae looks like easy achievements too (2 playthru minimum - speedrun required)

Shantae just feels a hair off to me. In principle I feel like I should really like them, but in practice they are just missing something intangible.

Not sure Exactly what as each element individually seems ok.

Ah Batman is a telltale vn sort of thing, I had to go look up what it was. :-* I guess I'll try Shantae.

Yeah I'll give Shantae a go. I've put a fatwa on Telltale Games and won't touch their output with a 10 foot pole

You can already get Fable: Anniversary and Project Cars 2. Guessing they're the Games with Gold for the first half of this month.

It's definitely no Diablo, but 40k setting is cool. I picked it up on a steam sale a while back when they were 'turning it around', but it still felt pretty clunky. Lot of good reviews of late, not a bad freebie.
