It's All Hallow's Eve, and in our first segment we're talking about such eerie topics as GamerGate, Apple Pay,and Tablets/Phablets. In Segment Two, we turn our withering gaze towards games like The Evil Within, Persona IV Ultimax, Shadow of Mordor, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, Endless Legend, Civilization Beyond Earth - and the most horrifying game of them all, Senran Kagura Shinovi Versus.

Happy Halloween, and we'll talk to you again soon!

I was wondering which meds Doug had forgotten to take that led to him steamrolling over everyone else's chance to speak, and then he mentioned the two energy drinks.

Completely agree with The Evil Within put-downs.  Can't even say that I went in expecting Resident Evil 4 when I played.  Was just turned off by how bad it was.  Traded it up for Diablo III on PS4, which will be my first time playing the game on any platform.

Animu:

But damn, too much life and hometown for Doug to handle.   :lol  Doesn't sound like you gave it much of a chance because of all the perverted content.  I am surprised you bought it at all because of that, though.  I do disagree with your assessment of the game play.  It is mechanically-sound and you were clearly in full "Church lady prude mode" when you went off on it.  The 3DS sequel has better game play and a much better challenge, and even tones down the pervertedness a bit, but I would definitely recommend that you stay far away from it after listening to this podcast!   :)

I assume I am the one being labeled as a pervert by Doug in that rant, which is sort of both insulting and awesome at the same time.

Shocking that an image search of a fan-service heavy game would return nothing but perverted image results!

GIS  "Diablo III female" or "Borderlands 2 Maya" and you'll also get some questionable content.  This should be no surprise.

The content is explicitly obvious-- Not even the Xseed dudes are going to try and attempt to cover that up this time around.

This is one of the few games like this that has good game play behind it, with each entry getting better in game play and challenge levels.   If you don't like uguu-ecchi stuff, I'm not sure why you would even consider buying this game, however, because Senran Kagura is blatant about its insane levels of tits n' ass and it's pretty obvious that Van Cruncheon does not go for this kind of thing.

Everyone's voices sound different than I expected  :lol

Robert does a good Kermit the Frog impression. Or maybe Ray Romano.

:lol I'm never going to unhear this now.

I liked the tablet discussion, whoever said people weren't upgrading much resonated with me. I'm still using an iPad 2 since call I do is use it as a consumption device. And even with iOS7 it's fine. It's a bit slow at times but video looks good and plays smoothly. The only game I've played on it in over a year is Desert Golf. There's not a lot of benefit for me going to an air 2 outside of the better screen, so it's an easy way to not spend $500+. When I can't stream the NBA or Netflix on this iPad 2, or web browsing and twitter become too slow to use regularly, then I might upgrade.

Wife has a nexus 7 and is perfectly happy with it. There's no reason to upgrade outside of screens at the moment. Every other new feature is basically useless to us.

I rather enjoyed this episode.

I wasn't expecting such a long rant about GamerGate.  And I mostly expected Doug to be dismissive of both sides in GamerGate, and not so plainly supportive of one.  To me that whole clusterfuck feels like two fringe groups bickering over nonsense, both desperately believing they are fighting for the heart and soul of a culture/hobby.  At the end of the day though the mainstream will pay little heed to either side and business will keep rolling on as usual.

It's like all these social justice bloggers nervously wringing their hands debating about whether Miley Cyrus' twerking or Iggy Azalea's rapping is offensive cultural appropriation.  By the time you settle the issue they both will have been replaced by some other garbage.

I was glad to hear the broader discussion about women in STEM and computer science specifically.

I'm firmly of the belief that there are not two sides to this story; there's the misogynists and the truth.

I started feeling crappy a few minutes before we recorded, so I didn't talk much in this episode. I knew very little about GG because I hadn't paid attention to it, but I know this: No one gave a fuck about games journalism prior to all this, and now it's suddenly reeeally important. That tells me all I need to know about what the core of this is. Also, shitbags posting people's personal info. Nerds be needing a public asswhipping.

this, and it's even worse in smaller shitty companies in my experience. I had a boss who was a straight up serial rapist.
