Title: Your Top 10 Favorite Video Games of All Time: A GameFAQs Thread
Post by: Let's Cyber on July 18, 2017, 07:36:18 PM
This is probably one of the most basic and consistently asked question on shitty video game forums like NeoGAF LLC but given how small and intimate the community is here, I'm curious what games my favorite borians/boritos/boristas really enjoy.

Only list one game per franchise, I think that will makes things more interesting. Other than that there are no rules. Don't feel pressured to list or number them in any particular order if you don't want.

-Brutally difficult in the best kind of way and will force you to go through all of the stages of grief multiple times per campaign.  :lol Is maybe one of the most replayable games ever made; each campaign feels fresh and different by the end.  You never know who is going to rise to the occasion to save the day or which solider will miss a crucial shot, shit their pants and end up fucking over the mission. Losing your favorite units is genuinely painful but picking up the pieces and moving forward is rewarding in its own way. A special experience.
-I've never enjoyed just being present in a video game world as much that of the Witcher 3 (my original game file is at 450 hours  :doge). I've wasted many weekend afternoons playing Witcher 3 and just riding around in the countryside. Some of the best video game characters ever. Top tier soundtrack. One of the best games of all time with undoubtedly some of the finest DLCs ever made.
-Charm through the roof. Amazing graphics. The HD version still looks superb. They nailed the controls and it is a joy to just explore the world and enjoy scenery. Soundtrack is one of the best ever.  Only real complaints for me are the low difficulty and shitty unnecessary Boss Gauntlet at the end.
-I think this is Miyazaki's masterpiece. The added weapons in Old Hunters put it over the top. The fast combat and top notch art design make up for the lack of build variety for me. I also prefer the lore in BB to Demon or Dark Souls. Dark Souls 1+ Artorias of the Abyss is a close runner up.
-I knew after just the first hour this would be one of my favorite games ever. The tone, music and scale just made this a unbelievable special game. The remake is one of my most anticipated upcoming titles.
-Amazing characters, the most interesting and consistent story of the Persona games and a memorable soundtrack. Barely gets the nod over P5 for me but it is close.
-One of the best OSTs of all time. The space theme allowed for them to get creative with the different worlds and levels. Could easily be swapped with Galaxy 2, they're on the same tier and both are fantastic.
-Definitely a messy game with some uneven parts but the late game combat is intense and probably the best ever done in an open world game. BitterBlack Isle is top tier stuff.
-Best dungeon in the series with Stone Tower Temple (although the rest of the dungeons are pretty underwhelming) and the transformations via masks are awesome. The almost constant impending doom gave the game a very different feel from most of the series. I really wish that transformation mechanic was carried over to later games. I should be able to transform into a Zora in BotW, god damnit.  :maf
-I still think this game is the king of the genre, though Bayonetta is close. After DMC2 dropped the ball, DMC 3 nailed the combat and had an interesting dynamic between Dante and his brother. Playing as Vergil  :lawd

A lot of my favorite 2D games just barely missed the cut, I think I prefer 3rd person 3D games at the end of the day. SMB3, Shining Force 2, Chrono Trigger, ALttP and Pokemon (Crystal was probably my favorite, not into the games as much anymore) were close. Also missing a lot of PC games. I've put a ton of time into Age of Mythology/Age of Empires II HD and also stuff like FTL and Civilization V but they didn't quite make the cut.  Also mostly SP games from me, mostly because I'd rather forget about all the hours I've wasted on COD4 MP or Destiny.  :doge

Rough, off-the-top-of-my-head list:

Super Mario Galaxy - Platforming perfection. So much fun, such great atmosphere, an outstanding soundtrack, Nintendo just hit this out of the park in virtually every way.

Fallout 3 & 4 - Yeah, they do play somewhat differently, but come on. As much as I do love the old Fallouts, the combination of Bethesda RPG formula with a post-apocalyptic world is basically everything I want in a game.

Planescape: Torment - Fantastic story, I could play this game over and over and never get tired of exploring all the little corners of this weird world.

Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines - Okay, the combat is pretty bad here, but I love the setting and atmosphere so much. It oozes style out of every pore and so many of the characters are so memorable.

Breath of Fire 3 - You combine magic stones to turn into a bunch of different kinds of dragons! BoF 4 is arguably better, and Dragon Quarter is very innovative and good, but 3 is the one that I will always come back to.

Sim City 2000 - The fourth iteration had more depth, but 2000 is the ultimate city-builder.

The Witcher 3 - Possibly the greatest RPG ever made. It's got such a well-crafted and believable world full of things to do, and I actually like Geralt as a character.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 - The Sonic franchise peaked early and never will be anywhere close to this good again. Even as much as I love the early Mario games, I don't think there's a 2D platformer that I can replay endless like this one.

Metroid Prime - First-person Metroid?! But they did it and somehow did it incredibly well. Complaints about controls aside, the exploration and atmosphere that Retro put together here is nothing short of incredible.

Star Ocean: Second Story - I love this game and I will fight you over it.

If I really thought about it, I'd probably make a few substitutions, but this is probably pretty close. At the very least, ever game here is very high on the top 50.

Only list one game per franchise, I think that will makes things more interesting. Other than that there are no rules. Don't feel pressured to list or number them in any particular order if you don't want.

That's tricky, as I like multiple titles in a series.

But let's go with:

(In no order)

1. Persona 3: FES
2. Parasite Eve 2
3. Resident Evil 3: Nemesis
4. Battlefield: Bad Company 2
5. Ninja Gaiden: Black
6. Marvel vs Capcom 2
7. Dead or Alive 2: Ultimate
8. Final Fantasy XII
9. Descent
10. Tomb Raider 2: The Adventures of Lara Croft

Honorable mentions that I'd include if wasn't limited to 10:

11. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations
12. Trauma Center: Under the Knife
13. Quake 3: Arena
14. Phantom Dust

- Lunia (RIP)

- Ys: The Oath in Felghana

Hmmmm... of all time? I dunno, I'd be better off doing by console, or by genre, or something.

Phantasy Star 2, Rez, and Star Ocean 2 are probably the best of the best for me, the others change so often.

1. Shenmue 1 and 2

I combine them because the experiences are so integral that it's impossible for me to separate them into different experiences and story line. The second one in particular though, is easily my favorite game. A provocative, philosophical, emotional, action-packed martial arts adventure epic that goes through 4 locations. It has it all. God tier ost as well.

2. Jet Set Radio

The greatest game not called Shenmue that Sega ever made. A skill-based platformer that forces experiementation and game mastery. I have mastered this game from front to back. 645's post on LTTP post on Neogaf is a fantastic summation on why this game is one of the GOATs (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=702187) that is better articulated in a way better than I ever could. Beaten this more times than I can count, considering trying to beat the world record speed run eventually. Plus, the OST. :lawd

3. Resident Evil 4

The best game ever made. Perfect pacing. Great replay value. Professional mode. Mercenaries. So many costumes. So many types of weapons and play styles. The amazingly hilarious lines. Playing Tetris with your items. Amazing animations. The coolest death animations ever in a game. Talking about it just makes me want to start up a new game now.

4. Super Mario Galaxy

The only reason this is so low because it has motion controls and no game pad option which limits how it can be played (meaning it probably won't ever get a port). Other than that, when I got this it was all I did. When I replayed it again, it was all I did. Any time I touch this game, it's all I can think of. It is truly a masterpiece and the best video game of the past ten years. OST can't be topped.

5. Street Fighter IV

https://youtu.be/U7_b1aMJHDA

Particularly Ultra. So many viable play styles, over 40 characters and yet good character balance, the first fighting game to make me want to get good at it in a legitimate way even though I've been playing fighters for decades. I love this game. I played over 300 hours of it in a year when no other genre could be satisfy me because nothing else could stack up. Of last gen, combining all SFIV iterations I've clocked maybe 400-500 hours into it. Incredible game.

6. Final Fantasy VIII.

I will fight you to defend this games honor. I love it to pieces in ways I can't describe. When I think of nostalgia and video games I think of Final Fantasy VIII. Contains my favorite game ost of all time within it. It's not what I consider to be the best in the series (that's XII) but whoo boy is it my fave by like, 500 miles.

7. Suikoden II

Among the best sequels ever made. A game that craftfly creaed the world of Suikoden and made it into connected universe. Suikoden II up there with SMB3 as one of the greatest sequels ever made and it does it nicely. It improves upon every single aspect laid out in the original and single-handedly created the legacy of what made the franchise as beloved as it is. A story of war, friendship, and hard times daddeh. It has cooking competitions, 108 characters, and amazing scenarios. Owns.

8. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

Similarly to Final Fantasy VIII, I in no way feel this is the best CV. That goes to III. But much like with FFVIII, it's my favorite of its respective series. It topped the formula that Metroid created. It features beautiful, beautiful music and art. Every time I play it I'm enchanted. All time classic.

9. Grand Theft Auto III Trilogy

Might as well be one game. What else needs to be said? On PC, these remain all time classics. I'm not sure the same can be said for the console versions due to their dated mechanics.

10. Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask

The best Zelda game IMO. Solidifying my amazing game taste.

Tetris: I can always pick up on play any version of this game (as long as it's decent...amazing that people can fuck up TETRIS) and play for hours.  Still the best puzzle game ever made.

The Secret Of Monkey Island: My all-time favorite graphic adventure.  I was addicted to this game and loved every minute of it!

Samurai Shodown II: Kept me coming back to the arcades and was my first Neo-Geo game.  I went absolutely insane when I found out that I was able to own this amazing title at home back in '96.  The game was two years old by this point, but I still pushed all the current stuff to the side to play this for hours and hours.

The King Of Fighters '98: Still the best and most perfect KOF out there.  Spent a good year and a half playing the shit out of this and dominating the competition. While I still enjoy the vanilla version, the updated '98 Ultimate Match is best version in my eyes.

Jet Set Radio: I loved everything about this game.  The game play was super-fun, but the visual aesthetic...that style...that music.  Man.  That was all me.

Street Fighter IV: Easily my favorite game of the last generation.  I racked up hundreds of hours playing this on all the various platforms, from the 360, to the PC, to the 3DS, to the PS3, and even on iOS.   Ultra is the best version.  I prefer playing SFV now, but I can't put that game on my top 10 list.  At least not yet.

Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night: I was mesmerized by the beautiful graphics and amazing soundtrack as I explored Dracula's castle.  Easily my favorite 'metroidvania'.

Prince Of Persia: The original version found on PCs is my favorite.  I first played the Apple II version.  This game had a unique feel back in 1989 and fun, challenging game play.  I was never able to get into any of the sequels, however.

Street Fighter II: "Life-changing" is the best way to describe this game for me.  No other game had me so addicted and wanting to improve my skills.  It was a phenomenon at the time, and if you weren't around when this was big in arcades, you missed out on something special.  I don't have a particular favorite version of this game, actually.

Real Bout Fatal Fury 2: The Newcomers: Really it's all three Real Bouts (four counting Dominated Mind) that I love.  I'm a big Fatal Fury fan and these were the best games in the series.  Garou is awesome, but it just wasn't the same.  I really wish that a new Fatal Fury would come out, because I enjoy these games more than KOF.

Various runners-up:

The Secret Of Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge
Street Fighter Alpha 2
Street Fighter Alpha 3
Bust-A-Move/Groove Dance And Rhythm Action
Bust-A-Move/Groove 2: Dance Tengoku Mix

#11 on my list is "Every Lucas Arts adventure game."

Which really just goes to show that "Top 10 All-Time" means a lot of really amazing games aren't going to make the cut.

The only reason this is so low because it has motion controls and no game pad option which limits how it can be played (meaning it probably won't ever get a port).
Having played it on Dolphin with a 360 pad, it's actually fairly easy to handle, you can map basically all the needed motion controls to all the extra buttons. Even using the second analog for basic pointer controls works well enough that with actual work done to the game it'd be fine.

Benji-kun, what's with the struck through games?
I started with a bigger chunk of games, paired them down by deleting close to half through comparing them to what I know will survive any set of cuts (the five at the top mainly plus a Civ) until I had a real solid feeling fifteen-ish then I picked the list of ten I was okay with. But left the other five there just struck out as "runner ups/honorable mentions." The games are listed in chronological order.

And then I continued the gag for Civ which has its own set of five runner-ups. (I, II, AC, IV and VI.)

A lot of people regard 3 highly, IIRC. But if you were going to get 2 I think 2 X-box is the way to go.

Really.  I had a lot of fun with that game.  Solid arcade shooting mechanics and I enjoyed the aesthetic and music a lot.

Looking at other lists and thinking about stuff makes me realize how much I left out.  Stuff like Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!, Windjammers, Beach Spikers, Gunstar Heroes, Super Monkey Ball, Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate, Sengoku Basara 2 (Really just about all of them), Senran Kagura (lulz), Contra, BAYO-FUCKIN'-NETTA 1 AND 2, etc.

2X. It's the first two games combined with a few new maps, it also increases all the graphics and stuff. Even more so than DC, and plus you actually have enough buttons to play it with. Treyarch did it just like they did the 2 DC up-port.

The largest problem I have with 3 is that I don't think the maps/goals are as good as 1 or even 2 but the revert and general gameplay is such an improvement. 2X mostly solves the map issue, except for the fact that you play through the 2 maps first. Oh, and even the S controller is not really ideal with the lack of four top buttons.

I dunno. It got repetitive really fast for me. Pretty graphics and I don't mind the tits-and-ass, but the "shooting mechanics" you laud did nothing for me. And I say that as a fan of arcade shooters like Galaga and the like.

Something recent I've been playing (and need to finish already) that's definitely way up there is Cave Story.  It's so good.  I still can't believe I missed out on this before.

I realize more and more with time that I might truly be the only one who preferred JSRF to JSR.

Both are great games, though.

This is actually the more popular opinion. Much to my chagrin. Many think JSR is an outdated badly playing game and it pisses me off.

:confused really? Thought it was the opposite.

JSR still plays great. I just love how JSRF is like a weirdo hip version of your SM64 type 3D platformer.

Nope. People say JSR is shit after HD version came out.

Doing this is weird for me because I have a list I created a long time ago but I haven't really spent any time updating it with things from the last handful of years. A lot of it is a decade + old. Going back and looking through some old lists and sorting things around my first draft list looks something like this:

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
Super Metroid
Dark Souls
The Witcher 3
Half Life 2 (and episodes)
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
Burnout Paradise
Devil May Cry 3
Mass Effect 2
Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (1992)

Nostalgia is a hell of a drug, but I still prefer the concise, self-contained style of this one to Breath of the Wild. Maybe in a few years once the dust has settled and I've done another playthrough or two for that game, I'll feel differently, but it's hard to top how much of an impact ALttP had on me in my formative gaming years. The spritework is incredible, the music as good as ever, and combined with the lore in the instruction booklet, I've never felt so compelled to explore a gaming world. While the overworld is small (even taking into account the Dark World) compared to other Zeldas, I feel it works in its favor. There's so much to do in every square of the map and it rarely recycles its tricks and gimmicks. My favorite Zelda ever.

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island (1995)

I count this as a Yoshi game despite its title.

Does 2D platforming get better than this? The other mainline Mario platformers might have tighter controls and higher speed, but there's something about ambling around Yoshi's Island collecting coins, opening doors, and groundpounding through fluff that's sheer joy. The graphical style has aged like fine wine, and the game is oddly emotional and "epic" at times (in a "Saturday Morning Cartoon" sort of way.) In that respect, it's a lot like Super Mario Galaxy - my proper choice for favorite Mario platformer.

Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri (1999)

I'm not a huge strategy fan, but there's something special about Alpha Centauri. It feels like a work of art - the futuristic, creative vision of a singular person at the top of their game. Every faction leader feels so different, and the ongoing plot is so mysterious and powerful, it's hard not to get drawn in immediately. I can't really judge the gameplay since I haven't played many other turn-based strategies, but since it was my first I still find it simple to learn and hard to master, with a huge depth and freedom to approach any given situation in potentially hundreds of different ways.

Resident Evil 4 (2005)

RE4 was both my first Resident Evil game and my first M-rated game. What a way to start out, huh? Millions of words have been poured as praise on this game so I don't really have much to say here, other than this: looking back on it now, it's still astounding how much content and variety there is in the game. Dozens and dozens of unique, one-off areas that all seamlessly connect and draw you into its horrific world. Thinking about it, RE4 is the most "immersive" game on my list of favorites.

Super Mario Galaxy (2007)

Mario, distilled, and with grand epic flare to boot. It's crazy to think this came after Super Mario Sunshine, but on the other hand there was an entire half-decade between the two releases. Every minute of development time spent on this game was worth it. Like with RE4, there's so much content here. So many worlds and stars and bosses. The music and graphical style are absolutely impeccable, and the streamlining of platforming objectives (while still allowing for a bit of freedom here and there) attained the most-perfect balance in the series.

I don't mean to slog on Super Mario Galaxy 2, it's an absolutely fantastic game, and a bit more challenging, but I don't equate challenge with quality. On their own merits, I find the first Galaxy much more consistent in just about every area (art style, mechanics (fuck the Fluzzard), music, balance of open vs. linear, boss battles) and I also give points for the Rosalina storybook and general grander feeling of the original game. Galaxy 2 started out as a level pack, and it shows in some of its non-platforming related areas. I could be convinced Galaxy 2 is a better platformer, but I stand firm in my belief Galaxy is the better game.

The House of the Dead: Overkill (2009)

The House of the Dead is one of my favorite series ever, but this one wasn't even made by the original developers! It's also M-rated as fuck, with F-bombs, gore, vomit, incest, urination and the works. The graphics are janky but I feel it compliments the groundhouse style nicely, while the music is some of the catchiest of all time (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5apruos3GEo).

I give Overkill the nod over the original series for a few reasons: ridiculously satisfying shooting, the combo and upgrade system, and the ridiculous plot (which set a Guinness World Record for amount of "fuck"s in a single game) that still makes me chuckle to this day. Yes, the other games were great cheesy fun with lines that have gone down in gaming history ("Suffer like G did?" "They disturbed the loife cycle!"), but literally every aspect of Overkill clicked for me and elevated the game to more than the sum of its parts.

Pokémon SoulSilver (2010)

It was between Platinum, SoulSilver, White, and Moon, but I had to give credit to the remake of my pre-Gen 4 favorite. SoulSilver is a master class in how to remake a game. The mix of 2D and 3D graphics still look great to this day - even better than Black/White, which came out a year later. SoulSilver knew when to use 3D and when to stick to 2D, while with White it seemed like Game Freak were so excited about the third dimension they couldn't help putting it everywhere - jaggies be damned.

From a gameplay perspective, it was Pokemon, and SoulSilver's strengths lie in its world and how Game Freak added and updated it. Like some other games on my list, SoulSilver just has so much content. Two regions, 16 badges, the Safari Zone, the Gen 4 Battle Frontier, etc. Even the Pokeathlon was great! Where as usually those kind of side quests are super lame (see: Contests and Super Contests.) All told, HeartGold and SoulSilver probably have the greatest amount and variety of content in the series, even to this day.

Animal Crossing: New Leaf (2012)

The Animal Crossing series is the zen garden of gaming, and New Leaf was a stark improvement over City Folk. While I'll always have nostalgic, fond memories of the original GameCube game, New Leaf brought me back to the series in a huge way after I thought I was done with it. It's still Animal Crossing at its core, but it tweaked and improved on the city concept, added swimming/diving, brought back the island, and integrated with online seamlessly. Some of my favorite gaming memories are the two-week stretch after release when I'd play and the game would notify me someone from the Bore hopped online, and then sending messages to-and-fro. Those couple times four of us here went to the Island to catch beetles gives me warm fuzzies to think about. The prospect of having to reacquire all my items in a potential Switch version is daunting, but I'm still excited at the online upgrades they might do. If it can capture half of the online fun I've had with New Leaf, I'd consider it a great success.

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U (2014)

I'm not a pro player, so while Super Smash Bros. Melee is probably the better game mechanically, I'm choosing the latest and greatest for a word I've used a lot in this post: content. The amount of stages and characters here is off the charts, and the gameplay is still great - occupying a nice middle ground between Melee's sky-high skill ceiling and Brawl's casual party focus. It's easy to understate just how big an achievement I feel Smash 4 is. The graphics are 1080p 60 fps and ditched the dirty dishwater style Brawl had, making the characters and stages pop. The online is serviceable. It and Mario Kart 8 brought Nintendo into the DLC era in a major way, with several fan favorite characters returning - not to mention insane third-party picks like Cloud, Ryu and Bayonetta.

There's a crazy amount of modes, although I will knock the Wii U version here: Classic Mode on 3DS, and that game's Smash Run mode, are both improvements over the Wii U version's counterpart. That aside, while I find something to love in every Smash game, I can't ignore how massive or polished Smash for Wii U feels. It even finally introduced a character so fun to play it swayed me away from Luigi (my main since 64): Villager.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (2017)

The original release of Mario Kart 8 saw the series reach its apex as a kart racer. MK8 somehow balances all the crazy gimmicks added in the last few releases: from bikes in Mario Kart Wii, to paragliders and sub-propellers in Mario Kart 7, to its own huge gameplay twist with anti-gravity. It all flows together in any given track so that you're constantly engaged. It looked crazy gorgeous (even in 720p), the online was a dream, and the added 16 DLC courses (not to mention 200cc mode) were all done so, so, so ridiculously well. The drawback was that Battle Mode, long a staple in the series, was shockingly malnourished. Yes, you could pop balloons, but only on the actual race tracks that were not meant for it at all. And all it had was Balloon Battle.

MK8 Deluxe took the base game with DLC and completely revamped the battle mode. Now there's five to choose from - four returning modes (Balloon Battle, Shine Thief, Coin Runners, and Bob-bomb Blast) and the absolutely joyous Renegade Roundup (basically cops and robbers.) They're all crazy fun to varying degrees, but yeah, Renegade Roundup might just be my favorite. In addition to all that, it added purple sparks and double held-items, making this Mario Kart the full package. Finally, it cranked the resolution to a full 1080p (when docked.)

It was a little hard for me to choose between Mario Kart DS and the original Mario Kart 8, but Deluxe supersedes both. As someone who prefers battling to racing, MK8 Deluxe delighted me and I've already put over 45 hours into it. In a few months I may have even spent more time with it than Breath of the Wild.

Wish I could have found a place for Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, The Evil Within, Tetris DS, WarioWare D.I.Y., or Mega Man X here, but I'm pretty satisfied with my choices.

The one per franchise is tough for me.

Super Metroid over Metroid Prime by a smidge.
Guild Wars 2 over GW1, though I think the first was a bit tighter.
Ico
Skies of Arcadia
Double Dash over the other Mario Karts
Diablo 2
Mario 64
Team Fortress 2
Final Fantasy 6
Tempest 2000

Notes: Witcher 3 may eventually replace something there, but I need to give it more time to see how long it lasts in my head. Wanted to put a sports game up there, but it was between NBA Jam TE, NBA Courtside 2 or NFL Blitz. None of those were quite good enough. Almost put Wind Waker up there. I am probably forgetting a SNES game that I loved but can't recall. Almost put up SSF2Turbo as my fighting game. That or Soul Calibur 2. SSX Tricky almost replaced Tempest 2k.

I feel like Goldeneye 64 should make the list due to the massive amounts of hours played in that game and the great level design. However, it is a victim of technological age, so I cut it.

In no particular order.

Silent Hill 2
The GOAT Survival Horror game. I don't think it will ever be topped. And Fuckonami.

Mario 64
Hasn't really aged. Timeless. Still shit all over any other 3D Mario.

Sid Meier's Pirates!
I have no idea how many hours I've poured into this game, on both Amiga and Amstrad platforms. Remade many-a-time, but somehow it never felt as good as the OG.

Killzone 2
That's right. Come at me. Played the campaign once, didn't really care for it. Had tons of fun in MP with a bunch of crazy euro GAFers. Good times.

Secret of Mana
IMO the best jARPG ever. Great music. Good gameplay. Fun story. Pretty graphics. And 3p MP? All over my face.

The Lost Vikings
One of the most creative puzzle/platforming games ever. And hilarious, too.

The Last of Us
No explanation needed, I assume.

Demon's Souls
Had a lot of super obscure stuff that was just brilliant. None of the following FROM titles came close to surpassing this game.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Best Zelda game, period.

God of War III
Because HOLY SHIT THAT OPENING

Runner-ups
Horizon: Zero Dawn, Syndicate, X-com (the OG), Shadowrun (SNES), Theme Park, Destruction Derby, The Legend of the Mystical Ninja, Lemmings, Warhawk, Starcraft, MGS2, Super Mario World, Bomberman, Crash Team Racing, Megaman X, C&C: Red Alert, Diablo, Dungeon Keeper. And a fuckton of other games.

Edit: I forgot Toy Commander and Powerstone

Surprised people are choosing Mario 64 over Galaxy. It has a slight advantage in how much freedom Mario's controls have, and a better overworld, but that's about it IMO. Oh and I guess some might knock the motion controls in Galaxy but they're honestly fine. Different strokes.

Silent Hill 2

It was topped with Silent Hill 3.  I don't see how 2 is the best Survival Horror game when it's the least scary out of SH 1-3.  You were given far too much ammo and the music wasn't quite as creepy as 1 and 3.  True, it had the best story though.  (However I liked and cared the most for Heather in SH3 than any other character in the series)

Mario 64

I replayed Mario 64 a year ago and I had to quit a few stages before the end.  I could not take anymore of that camera and controls.

Silent Hill 2 has a much better story than 3. The horror is better in 3 but it depends on what you want. I personally think the story in 2 edges it past 3 since 2 IMO has the best story ever in a game especially with in water ending.

I need to replay Silent Hill 2 this year. Such a classic. :bow I'll up the ps2 during Halloween season.

Speaking of "the best survival horror game", I need to beat REmake too. I truly think it's the best the genre has to offer. I often refuse to play it and have never beaten it because I find it too oppressive, scary, and downright frightening. From the audio to the visuals to the gameplay it's the complete package as far as the genre goes and is fucking stressful to play.

I like Room of Angel from the OST. Pretty corny in a not written by a native speaker/translated kind of way, but nonetheless. The Shadows of the Damned soundtrack has a couple songs like that as well.

The best Sid Meyer title. So good it got a GURPS campaign on it. :lol

It really is just the best. It spoiled me so much I've barely tried any other strategy games...

Except for Civ BE, which is apparently the worst one. :lol I dig it though. I'm not sure I can get into a strat game without a scifi setting anymore.

I don't really want to get into it(I did so too much back in my old GAF days) so I'll just keep it simple and sweet: I thought Galaxy was too easy compared to 64 and Sunshine overall, at the time it going more linear when my love for 3D Mario was due to some nonlinearity irked me, I hate the purple comet system, and what was there didn't really do it for me.

Galaxy 2 absolutely surprised me in how it ironed out some of my issues with the first, and I found it's level design and gameplay in general to be an improvement. I love Galaxy 2 while finding the first to be a good game but a step back. I'm very much in the minority on not thinking Galaxy was all that great and I understand that, and don't have issues with preferring it over 64. At the end of the day it does feel like a different style of Mario game, so it all depends on preferences.

I see. As I said in my post, I don't equate challenge with quality, so I guess we're just two different folks. :) Some of my favorite games have been very easy or light experiences, like Wind Waker or Animal Crossing.

Something about Mario Galaxy's gameplay and most of the aesthetic just really turned me off of it, but I can get why people like it.

I think it's the best looking Mario game ever, even including Yoshi's Island. That game in is A E S T H E T I C A L.

I like Galaxy a lot more than 64.

But I never was big on the 64 series of each franchise except Star Fox 64. (And Wave Race.) I think Mario Kart 64 is the worst for example.

I don't really count Majora's Mask whenever I think of them since it came late, I think of OoT, which didn't really grab me as much as the 2Ders ever did. Actually 3D Zelda in general hasn't ever really. The Wind Waker's mystery did a lot for it. And gotta admit the graphics whore in me was lovin that shit.

Maybe I should go back to TP or something some day.

God of War III
Because HOLY SHIT THAT OPENING
This is a funny series for me too. Because you think the first one or the third one usually for one or more of these reasons. But for the scale, design and plot I love II so much more. It goes balls out in Greek lore and references, it fixes all the Gods by making them total manipulative jerkasses unlike the first game which even with a plot centered around it only really lets Ares be so and leaves Kratos semi-justified rather than just as bad as the rest, it has a completely nuts plot that holds together despite multiple trips through time with no plot holes, and the scale of some of those setpiece shots are amazing even on PS2. Like the fucking horses, oh my god. And I knew III could never live up to the ending of II even though it almost seemed it was going to. That fucking ending of II. And the DVD extras with Cory Barlog. :heart :heart :heart I'm still convinced he was like, ha, no way I can actually pull that war off, see ya guys I'm gonna make Mad Max with the Just Cause guys instead, good luck.

The ICO inspiration for the series I think shows off more in II than it does in I, way more static camera shots that present an impression of something of epic scale since they couldn't pull off as an actual sight on the PS2. (And does it better than the select ones in the first game.)

I blew through that game too but I rarely recall being pumped with an ending of a game like I was with II, like blowing my mind here, we're going back and getting the Titans and bringing them forward to have a fucking war over Olympus, it's like you said let's do the best thing ever after what you just showed me in II with all the characters and Greek lore. The only downer is that it's a cutscene. Saints Row: The Third pulling out "Holding Out For A Hero" is the comparable "wait, we're doing this? we're actually doing this?!? WE'RE GONNA DO THISSSSSSSS OMGGGGG" but you get to play it.

II's time travel not creating plot holes by embracing paradox, is one thing that has kept Chrono Trigger on my list above other RPG's, because Chrono Trigger pulls off the same thing somehow. And I like how both games make pretty clear that, like dude, you fucking can't do this because paradoxes, and the answer is "why fucking not?"

Now if you're actually reading this drivel you're wondering so much, but here's where I tie it all together as if the whole thing was leading somewhere. Saints Row IV's "true ending" which reveals the narrator. One of the greatest endings of all time.

And God of War II does the same thing with the narrator, and retrospectively for the first game. (She also is an unreliable narrator and manipulative and Kratos is warned about this multiple times which makes it even better for the third game.)

Actually, that reminded me about some comments I wanted to make regarding Saints Row and its place in my top lists. (Batman: Arkham series has a similar "problem" to it.) As it's the most obvious missing (even from honorable mentions) franchise probably.

I fucking love The Third and IV's plots, the integration of "Power" into a mission changed the series for the better and everytime they go down that road it's brilliant, especially in IV's opener. But they have uninspired maps and boring open world parts. 2 is harder to go back to mission gameplay wise and I don't like its story crescendo points nearly as much outside of the Worf storytree.

It's an instance where allowed one game, nope. But if you could plop a series in, 2-IV probably topples somebody off my list. The first three Arkham games get a similar consideration to me, Asylum is Metroid as a brawler meets Batman, City fixes around the edges and creates the Batman experience the first game never allowed with its lower ceiling, and while Origins is technically stunted, it by far has the best story and arguably with things like the detective events does a better overly empty open world than City.

It also brings up a weird consideration I have. Since these games all released in the same "extended generation" I think of them differently as a "franchise" than I would Mario or Zelda or GTA. Even Call of Duty seems this way because it's basically only existed as we know it for one generation before this one. Especially since MW and BO both finished even if the latter kinda swerves...you can kick out III and plug in WAW since it has clear plot ties to BO.

Funny enough, with my list is that for the obvious Metroid entry, it's this, the Prime series, which only released three games (yes Tasty THREE) and all effectively in the same generation. And I used their collected status in Trilogy to knock off Super or maybe...Zero Mission. I probably still lean towards Prime but it's a bit harder by itself against Super whereas with Echoes it's a no brainer with Corruption being an extra bonus.

Cook Serve Delicious
Have you tried Order Up! ?

It's on Wii with motion controls (which I think are somewhat essential to its best qualities as you actually benefit from flipping pans properly), but there is a free with ads mobile version that just replaces that with finger swipes or whatever. It's basically a similar concept, you're a line cook with a bunch of different stations, you have to serve entire tables and you go through different restaurants, have to get the dishes out close to the same time so they don't get cold, customers have odd requests, etc.

Its success helped inspire whatshisface from GAF to finally make this. Though CSD's design is based more on some Japanese PS1 game.

While the music is great, it's the sound effects of SH3 that make me consider it Survival Horror perfected.

You often couldn't tell if the sounds you heard were coming from enemies, sound effects, or the music.  It was much more unnerving walking around in SH3 than it was SH2.

Zelda: Breath of the wild My parents bought me the original zelda because they liked the gold case. I didn't know shit back then but oh my god it captivated my imagination. Breath of the wild is the final fulfillment of the promise of zelda and in large part, videogames.

Final Fantasy VI It really opened my eyes to what games really could be. Playing it back in the day was a revelation. I might have gotten too cynical and impatient but really it's a lovely lovely game

Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 can't really pick one over the other and really they both sorta feel like one experience.  Sad there hasn't been a follow up for this.

Super Metroid I remember playing the original metroid and the atmosphere and the feeling of being alone actually gave me nightmares. But I loved it. This took that whole experience and made it better

Bayonetta 1 and 2 Again, the same thing as Mario Galaxy, they sorta feel like the same experience. Such great game play.

Metal Gear Solid 3 The only truly good Metal Gear Solid game. It died, not for honor, but for me.

Wipeout HD The aesthetic, the music, the driving. All great

Castlevania - SOTN Everything but the ending theme in this game is fantastic

Virtua Fighter 3 and 4 I always liked the more strategic feel of Virtua fighter, you feel like a zen master when you really master it. 5 didn't capture that for me, but 3 and 4 did

Doom Not a fan of FPS games, but this one, this is something else.

Even then, SimCity is super casual. You can pause the timer IIRC and then build with your resources before letting said resources in real-time accumulate.

Real talk, I've never bought a Civ. I've played the demos to IV and V and loved both, but every time I want to buy a Civ they make a new one. I wanted IV and then V came out; I wanted Civ V plus all expansions and then VI comes out. Apparently VI sucks though so I dunno.

The new ones don't render the old ones obsolete and without reason to play them, especially if you haven't played them. The reason to move on to the new ones is because you've played so much of the old one you could do it in your sleep and for more than half the game you're going through the motions because you've perfected a path for your style of play.

I, for example, is still a decent introduction to the genre though I'd probably suggest II instead since it isn't too much more complex but also has more space to grow with. (Freeciv being ideal for this.)

If you would like I have a key for IV Complete which should run on basically anything Windows or Mac and was until BNW got polished up considered the definitive Civ game. It's also the last of the original square tile configuration Civ games. I also have three keys for III Complete, which is imo the worst Civ game but many like it.

If Queen doesn't want any of this, others can have em. Well, at least two others could get III anyway. I really need to do another key dump in the free games thread.

Lego StarWars 2 (lol)
no lies, game is a 9/10, though The Complete Saga gets the nod for my top x list because not only does it include all the first game they fixed the vehicle levels from that one so they play like the ones in 2

super easy obv but its fun goin back with the new characters you unlock so you can solve all the two guy puzzles

also the game is literally this as a game:

In fairness, it was released at $20.

BUT a new copy comes with a paper hat like cooks in diners wear. :doge

I forgot there's a PS3 and 3DS version.

The studio later made Tower Wars which is a multiplayer tower defense game that's pretty cool on Steam. Another game I probably have a key for since it says here it's been in eight bundles.

But now they've been reduced to Frozen Free Fall: Snowball Fight, a F2P match three game on mobile and PC: http://store.steampowered.com/app/357480/Frozen_Free_Fall_Snowball_Fight/

Apparently the PC version has been updated with STUNNING HD GRAPHICS tho. I actually played two hours of this according to Steam, I had installed it just because of the studio and the fact it was free and also I like match three. (Who doesn't really.) But back then it was just a mobile port, not STUNNING HD GRAPHICS. I probably should check out these STUNNING HD GRAPHICS.

Speaking of things I have a ton of keys for...Cook, Serve, Delicious! Apparently been in ten plus bundles.

The sequel is releasing soon! http://store.steampowered.com/app/386620/Cook_Serve_Delicious_2/

I feel like I'm going to, like the first game, wind up buying this at launch just because I've talked to the guy on GAF more than a desire to actually play it immediately. :lol

I've played a good amount of CSD, but that was before he worked with the difficulty curve because it got crazy hard randomly early on, and I never got back into it like many games as he added more stuff

had to use keyboard, was no controller support yet

there's a few GAF old timer references in there, and there's the ryan davis burger/achievement too

I had it and Shatter sitting with Defense Grid 2, Sanctum 2, Borderlands 2 and Sonic and All-Stars Racing Transformed in my COME BACK TO THIS ALREADY category for over a year :lol

i'm so terrible at finishing things

Silent Hill 2. The best horror game of all time, and I doubt it will ever be beaten.

Ico. Fantastic experience from start to end, I would have SoTC in here also, but I feel like that is cheating on only one game per franchise rule.

Black & White. The game that got me hooked on the God sim genre.

Theme Hospital. Yes. I really used to like Molyneux games.

Persona 4... No 5. No 4. Fuck. I don't know. I think I have to go with 4.

Football manager 2012. Honestly very hard to pick one edition, but this is probably the one I spent most time with. But 2014 was amazing as well, and the old Championship manager games before the name change, were great as well. Hugely addictive.

To The Moon. Extremely short and made in fucking rpg maker. But so good.

Counter Strike: GO. I did play a lot of 1.6 and some of the previous editions of it. But I was young back then and have a hard time remembering. Played a lot of Source as well, but it was a quite frustrating game. GO is... Also frustrating, but it got me properly hooked on CS again. CS is still the best competitive shooter out there.

Metal Gear Solid 2. The best MGS game, and if you disagree you are not only wrong, but probably a grotesquely ugly freak as well.

Witcher 3. They did it again, and they did it better.

Honorable mentions: FF7, FF8, FF12, Silent hill 3, Beyond good and evil, sim city, rollercoaster tycoon 2, the movies, republic: the revolution, Uncharted 2, grin fandango, pro evolution soccer 5, dungeon keeper, the whole gran turismo franchise, half life 2, hyper light drifter, resident evil 2 and 4.

On the upside, Molyneux's only credit on that is for "Moral Support" :lol

He did do Theme Park though. But he was working on the Magic Carpet games (which lets be honest is really one game and an expansion pack) rather than Hospital.

I think people often forget that Bullfrog and Origin and stuff used to be multiteam development houses before EA crushed them to death. Hell, EA itself used to be that way. Them giving out their back catalog on Origin for free and putting that one mega pack in the one GOG sale where you got all their 80s and early 90s DOS stuff for like $8 has only reminded me how far they fell into the franchise assembly line hole around the end of the PS1 era and debut of The Sims. (Ultima excluded :lol)

There's an open-source semi-update available that plays nicer with modern resolutions and file saving and such: http://corsixth.com/

Apparently EA's given away Theme Hospital on Origin three times in the last two years, so...keep an eye out I suppose. GOG puts it up for like $2 ever so often too. (For anyone interested, not necessarily you two.)

I'd jump straight to the second one if you want to try it out, it looks like there's going to be a lot more content and they even revamped a lot of how progression was handled, which is the only problem I ever had with the game.

I didn't even know Chubigans when I first played through it, I just got it on a Steam Sale (back when they were worthwhile and actually featured non-Early Access niche gems on their front page :lol :'( ). If you don't buy the spam email filter there's some spam emails referencing old BOMBA threads.

Also if any of y'all decide to play it, try using the keyboard, it's a lot more fun trying to remember the key quirks for each different recipe than it is to just use a controller.

Steam controller is the only way to play Cook, Serve, Delicious. IMO. I didn't play it (bought it because GAF) before that update, but playing it with the Steam Controller is second nature once you learn the quirks.

My only problem with the game is it gets SUPER hectic and you don't get the "hectic downgrade" update for a long while, so you're into a nervous panic with the "100% correct orders" bets and the like.

I have it, have not, really really should, it's only 5-6 hours or so. I admit being slightly turned off by its larger scope compared to most of his other works.

I'm really glad Thirty Flights of Loving came with Gravity Bone. Really liked the new game, but more people needed to play the latter and with all the sites hyping TFoL like RPS, PC Gamer, and such it hopefully got more people playing it than did the free version. Just epic pacing leading up to that ending. :lawd

My favorite part of TFoL is probably the smash cut intro. (And the montage shots of each characters "skills.")

edit: lol, Thirty Flights has pretty bad steam reviews, and PRETENTIOUS or hipster is used in nearly every one,

This is quite possibly the worst excuse for a game I have ever encountered. The game consists of about 10 different rooms, each taking about a minute to get through and suddenly out of nowhere you're hit with a The End sign and a bunch of walkthrough credits with comments about the great decisions they made and how they decided on them. These great decisions are along the lines of weird random jump cuts that change the entire scenario for no reason. There's also a room with displays of a bunch the game models and animated GIF video timelapses of screenshots of their creation. How impressive is that?

Also, there's a scene at a wedding where the characters randomly start rising up towards the ceiling. The developer notes say this was a bug, that they left in because it was so much better. Um, excuse me. This just proves how little effort they put into the game. Find a bug? Fix it? Nah. Let's just say it makes the game better. The game is practically on rails. I played it twice and nothing I did changed anything in the game beyond the room I was in.

I recommend buying it if you want to see possibly the worst game ever. It cost £4 and for some reason has a very high metascore of 88. I have also heard real game reviewers saying it's a brilliant game. I'm not really sure what's going there, but it's clearly something shifty that needs to be looked at.
Quote
Let's say you find this game on Steam for a dollar, and you're thinkin', "Hey, this seems kind of neat. Those reviews make it look interesting, too." Even at one dollar, this game is still a wretched mess of pretentious insignificance. The gameplay is horrid, the unique visuals tire very quickly, and there's no enjoyment to be had out of this.
Quote
The rating via metacritics was probably based on the opinion of the developer's mother and spouse for f*ck sake. It's just a load of kiss ♥♥♥ crap.

It's shorter than a midget's as$hole. If you blow it through it's less than 10 minutes.I had to play this twice just to make sure I wasn't doing anything wrong or avoiding anything crucial. And then I played once more with additional commentary - it made me even more of a unsatisfied towards the entire game from how carelessly thrown together it seems to be based on how the comments were written. I literally kept thinking in my head 'This has to be a f*cking joke' once I saw "The End" and game related credits in the muesem full of generated people in bundles of three that only consist of three different character models spammed throughout the entire location and some things regarding airplanes. Because yeah- gotta add some flying related thing for the sake of adding depth to the title "Thirty Flights of Loving" other than you having a romance for some b*tch that almost killed your best man.

Basically the game is literally contsructed based on mistake after mistake, yes sometimes imperfections add charm, but in this case it just seems like they were simply too lazy to bother fixing the issue and they decided to cover it up thoughtlessly. It was just like "Oh ..sh!t the crowd generator is causing peope to float in the wedding scene!?! That's alright! Let's just add some blurry effects while the player drink off the bottles while everyone else is dancing- and make the player assume they're so drunk that they can no longer correlate reality from alcoholic delusions! Why?Because it's ARTSY and adds a NARRATIVE touch in the game!!!"
Quote
My worst gaming experience ever if this can indeed be called a gaming experience. I hardly doubt. The Critic Reviews on Metacritic must be paid, because no one normal can give this s*** 80% above. This is really sad, because it destroys the whole purpose of scoring. Fortunately, the makers cannot bribe us gamers, so the User Score represents the real score.

Anyone wishing to get headache or masochists should buy this, because those fast flashing scenes will really cause you headache. My recommendation for all others, save your money and do not support creators of this "piece of software".

Yep he was just always one of the most outspoken people from Bullfrog. "His" games were also good, but as he surrounded himself with less and less people that dared to go against his opinions and design choices, the game became worse. Visited Lionhead a few times when I was younger, one of the times with Molyneux showing me and a few others around. This was right around the time they had been bought by MS, and he had this lady run after him, telling him all the things he couldn't show or things he couldn't tell us, which he happily did anyway right in front of her, and with a smug smile on towards her. Yet, while you can feel the cuntyness pouring out of him, he got a weird charm that you can't help but like.

Everyone at some point breaks off him though, and leaves as he is just too much of a cunt to work with. Even his most loyal co-workers, which is why he is making whatever crap he is today, with the usual straight out of school developers, crunching years for little salary.

What I would do was fill up my menu with cheap/easy menu items as I learned a recipe or two. Salad, chicken, steak, and some other dishes have good bonuses and are pretty to execute while you slot in other stuff, so you don't get too many complex orders at once.

Yeah, before I quit (I don't think I even hit 2 star) that was what I was doing: rotating out simple items to prevent menu rot while throwing in a semi-complex one for one day or so to replace them. :lol

Silent Hill 3 is a fantastic game as well, but the way SH2 shocked me the first time around... Jesus, that is what makes it win over SH3 for me. They had dropped hints at it, and you started getting the feeling something more was up, but I still hadnt quite seen it coming. Also I think the creature design is a step above SH3, especially abstract daddy and the room you fight him in, is the most disturbing shit ever.

SH3 creature design is too obvious and in your face. It's not subtle to catch the monsters symbolistic significance of the characters ego.

Sure, it's just the problem is after these games it's like well I love a lot of games equally that ranking them above each other seems incorrect.

1. Metal Gear Solid 3-I love for 2 for all of it's ridiculousness and the fact that it was probably the first game that made teenager me think "games can be art". I still love it, but some of that luster has waned as I well became not a dumb teenager. 3 on the other hand has aged far better as the complete package.

2. Final Fantasy X is the first FF I played and really set my gaming path as a JRPG person. It also really spoke to me as a teen thanks to Yuna and Tidus' development. So it's always going to have a special place in my heart even as I get older and less susceptible to it's angst.

3. Resident Evil 4-I mean it's just an amazing action game and no other game really gets me tensed like RE4. I also don't think I know a game's complete mechanics as I do RE4.

4. Zone of the Enders 2-I just think the astehtics, presentation, art, style, graphics, music, and whatever is so cool. The gameplay be simple, but man is it super cool looking and fun to zero shift around and fight the just as awesome rule of cool looking bossess.

5. Vanquish-I mean the same quailtes of ZoE2, but it's a really amazing game to play and you feel super skillful as you play gracefully in the seemingly chaotic battlefield.

6. Grand Theft Auto 3-Again the first GTA I played, but I got really lost in Liberty City and remember it till this day.

7. Battlefield 4-I guess I'll chose 4 because it had better maps than 3, but in general I spent hours in these games and are kind of the only things really doing what I want from online FPS. Big epic battles.

8. Persona 5-I think I like this more then 3 and 4 because of the aesthetics, sense of style, and setting. To me the game really is a total capstone of those games from the story, themes, and gameplay. I feel like it's total conclusion of the style of these Persona games.

9. Max Payne 2-Honestly, kind of a perfect TPS.

10. Modern Warfare 2-Hey I love these cinematic FPS and well I think MW2 is the perfect mix of trashy and over the top and grounded and serious CoD single player. I've replayed this a lot.

I'm willing to give the Room a bit of a pass because they at least tried to do some new stuff and introduce new concepts. I would have preferred a SH4 closer to SH3 but hindsight and all that.

The biggest shame is that it ended up being the last Team Silent game and Konami shifted Silent Hill development to western studios.

Not from my understanding. In pre-production they weren't really sure how it would fit within the Silent Hill universe yet (if at all) and approached it as more of a side story, hence a lot of the different concepts we hadn't seen other SH games.  Early in development it became Silent Hill 4. I have no idea if it was rushed out the door or not.

The idea that it was a totally new IP transformed into SH4 midway through development is more of a community fan-fiction that grew out of a small grain of truth.

Rygar (NES, 1987)
Loved this game as a kid, and I still think it's pretty cool as an adult. It's not a difficult game, but at the time I spent months pouring over it's nooks and crannies before I finally figured out how to beat it. Then I played it a bunch more, just because. I remember discovering a lot of fun bugs too, like finding places were you could go out of bounds and enter strange minus realms.

Rocket Knight Adventures (GEN, 1993)
This was another side-scrolling platformer that I loved and played repeatedly. I got my Genesis out and replayed it about a month ago, and it still holds up great.

Sam & Max Hit the Road (PC, 1993)
I got a CD-ROM drive and Soundblaster 16 for my Packard Bell 486 PC for Christmas 1994, and discovered a trailer for this game on a 1000-in-1 CD-ROM that my parents got me. It blew my mind, I thought it was the most hilarious thing I'd ever seen. I picked it up at the local mall in a PC game store (I can't even believe that such a thing existed, here the year 2017 :lol ) along with Day of the Tentacle because I was a big Maniac Mansion fan, and I enjoyed both games immensely but I really loved Sam & Max. I wasn't familiar with the Steve Purcell comics at the time, but I have sense read them, and watched the Fox SatAM cartoon (it's actually surprisingly faithful to the material), and played the Telltale series. The original game remains god-tier.

Final Fantasy VII (PSX, 1997)
Is this the game that turned me into a JRPG weeaboo? Maybe. I loved Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy on the NES, but for most of the early-mid 90's, I was only gaming on the PC, so I missed all the big SNES JRPGs. One of the local gaming stores had a LAN area where you went to play original-ass Team Fortress for Quake, and they had some PSOnes and N64s for Goldeneye or Tekken or whatever, and they also had a copy of FF7 for some reason and I played it and I was like "holy shit, I need a Playstation right now". I played like 20-30 other RPGs for the PSOne, and basically every one I was just chasing the rush of that first taste of FF7. Maybe I still am.
:uguu

Silent Hill 2 (PS2, 2001)
I'm a pussy when it comes to horror games, so a horror game has to be extremely compelling for me to beat it. I beat Silent Hill 1 & 2 and loved every minute. Silent Hill 1 was pretty janky, but I could forgive it's flaws because it was so good in other ways. Silent Hill 2 was just better in every way. I was totally locked in on this game for about a week. I would play it for a little bit, get scared and turn it off. Turn it back on about 30 minutes later.  :omg

Super Smash Bros. Melee (GC, 2001)
Best multiplayer game ever. "You guys wanna come up and play Smash?", said everyone, all the time.
:lawd

Half-Life 2 (PC, 2004)
Just the best single-player FPS experience ever, and if HL3 never comes out, I ain't even mad. If we can count Orange Box as a single game, it would be the best game ever. Hail Gaben.

The Binding of Isaac (PC, 2011)
I don't even care for the scatological aesthetics, but I still think this game is wonderful. Peak indie.

Skyrim (PC, 2011)
This is really more of just a blanket pick of all of Bethesda's first-person RPGs, but Skyrim is probably my favorite. It's a tough pick, though. Oblivion has extremely robust mod support which makes it fun to tinker around with, I like the post-apocalyptic settings of Fallout 3 & 4, but Skyrim man, that was just the good shit right there, right there, sign me up for some more of that shit.

Persona 4 Golden (Vita, 2012)
Just a good-ass JRPG.

I can't realistically come up with a "top 10" without leaving games out. Nobody can unless you're a nintard in the prayer closet

I would rather pick games that nobody has, Silent Hill is a given, Zelda is a given, etc etc

This is true. Was always supposed to be in the silent hill universe, even if not a direct sequel.

So while it's true it wasn't supposed to be a Silent Hill 4, it's also true that it was always made with Silent Hill in mind, and not just a new horror game from Team Silent with the Silent Hill name slapped onto it.

This reminds me that I heard somewhere that SH3 wasn't really supposed to be SH (or a numbered one, anyways) and also go shifted to the main series somewhere in development.

Probably early considering Heather's story and all that.

I always thought Evermore was a bit misnamed even though it lifts some gameplay aspects from Mana, it's not part of the same franchise so they're just both action-rpgs. It has a very different vibe and mystery focus. And all the different stuff your dog picks up that you can use for alchemy or is currency in one of the timelines or whatever.

  • Red Dead Redemption - Sceneman and I used to ride out and regulate on the regular. A fantastic game which proved Rockstar could still put out a relevant OWG after the oscar-worthy-writing-bullshit fiasco of GTA IV
  • GTA III - defined a new genre
  • Zork II - cut my teeth on this on the Apple ][, opened my mind to transportative, interactive experiences, I learned to type so I could play this game better
  • Klonoa - my first 2.5D platformer; simple but challenging platform mechanic
  • Saints Row 2 — While 3 was awesome, 2 had the balls to really up the previous game's theme, modify the environment, improve existing gameplay without losing the atmostphere
  • Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (Infocom) - humor and a sense of place in the novel's universe - glorious
  • Lode Runner - another Apple ][ experience which blew my mind; I did a fanfic comic of it before I knew what fanfic was
  • Crackdown - fuck the sequel, this game was a consistent, well-implemented, drop-in drop-out co-op, modern take on the platformer, rendered as an OWG, as a launch window title on 360 — amazeballs
  • Rock Band 2 - Fixed the broken shit from RB1, fantastic tracklist, featured improvement across the board, best local multiplay experiences I've ever had
  • BULLY - a remarkable clinic by a minor studio for its big-brother on how to adapt the OWG to a setting with minimal violence, integrated storytelling, organic playable area growth, and improved everything over its predecessors
Chrono, it says right in the rules only one game per series :hitler

RDR is another one I wish I could fit into my top 10 but newer open world games have surpassed it in my eyes.

I put so much time into Undead Nightmare. One of the best expansions ever.  :lawd

i think the reason why stuff like RDR, BoTW and Witcher 3 works while a lot of say, ubi shit is flat is because ubi put all their focus on gameplay mechanics and then put window dressings on it. CDPR, Nintendo and R* are more interested in world building. Ofc those games have a ton of overlapping fun and interesting gameplay mechanics but they help service the world they created and not the other way around.
Title: Re: Your Top 10 Favorite Video Games of All Time: A GameFAQs Thread
Post by: Let's Cyber on August 07, 2017, 11:45:00 AM
Sorry, I should clarify my sentence there.  I meant a few specific open world games have surpassed it aka it isn't king anymore for me.  Not that all new open world games or genre has evolved past it. And it wasn't until Witcher 3 that RDR was knocked off of the throne. It is still top 5 for me in the genre.

Part of the issue for me is purely graphical and the fact there is no PC version.

One game per franchise makes this a bit easier (or harder??!) In no real order:

Donkey Kong Country 2 - SNES

Chrono Trigger - SNES

Super Mario 64 - N64

Xenoblade Chronicles - Wii

Danganronpa 1,2,3 - Vita/PC - fuck, I'm not gonna include them as just one game. The entire experience is GOAT for me

Return to Castle Wolfenstein - PC

Street Fighter Alpha 3

Zelda: Link to the Past - SNES

Metroid Prime 1 - Gamecube

Castlevania Symphony of the Night - PS1

Was pretty hard to choose a title from the Mario series as there's such variety between the 2D and 3D games with each arguably able to be considered the GOAT (apart from sunshine, ofc). Went with Mario 64 as nothing before or since matched the moment I first played it back in 1996. Same deal but the other way round for Zelda 3/OOT although Majora's Mask and BOTW are probably the best in the series overall. Metroid Prime and Super are both the best in the series whether you're looking at 2D or 3D...but Prime wins it for me although I was debating choosing Prime 2 instead.

Missed out tonnes of great games above in the list though like Sonic 3+K, Akumajou Densetsu/Castlevania 3 JP, Wario Land 3, Battle Garegga, Timesplitters 2, etc

No Particular order and always changing with the times. Currently though:

1. Drakengard 3
2. Metal Gear Solid 3
3. Persona 3 (FES/P3P included)
4. NieR: Automata
5. Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow (I loved it just a bit more than SOTN, sorry)
6. Final Fantasy IX
7. Fire Emblem: Awakening
8. Valkyria Chronicles
9. Pokemon Crystal
10. Parasite Eve

Honorable Mentions: Because you specified only one game per series.
- Final Fantasy Type-0 HD
- Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII

Both of these titles are shit all over in general, but I loved the darker tone of Type-0 and Lightning Returns was an absolutely beautiful end to the XIII trilogy. (Also had a great battle system, constant pressure from the clock, and tremendous payoff if you invested in the characters)

I tend to be a Story>Everything else gamer though which understandably is not a popular position.

I'm terrible at this

Bayonetta 1&2
Metal Gear Solid 2
Persona 3
Majora's Mask
Sonic 2/3&K/Mania
Catherine
Dragon's Crown
Red Dead Redemption
Virtue's Last Reward

uuuhhh shit this is hard. I'm tempted to say Danganronpa (2 probably? 3 maybe?) for the last one because I played it very recently but I dunno. Could also be Vampire: the Masquerade Bloodlines or Mario 64 I guess.

There's probably more stuff I'm forgetting. I'm very indecisive and have terrible memory.

Zelda: Majora's Mask - My favorite genre is semi-open action adventure's like this. I love Zelda. This has the best atmosphere in the series, going for something almost nightmarish even if still innocent. The groundhog day mechanic allows for a world of many fullfledged characters whose stories can be played with. Everything ends on a depressing note.

Resident Evil Remake - Maybe the only legit throughout "scary" RE game before 7. Silent Hill was always the scariest, but man, Resident Evil just has so much better level design.

Killer 7 - I keep thinking about this shit until today. I feel safe to say that there's literally nothing like it. It makes Lynch movies look tame - absolutely no punches pulled. The presentaiton would lend itself extremely well for an HD remaster, but I'm not holding my breath.

Bloodborne - The first HD game I felt confident in saying that it's in my top 10. A classic horror fan's dream when it comes to presentation (I just wish there was a few more levels with bg music). Amazing level design/gameplay undermines its feeling.

Godhand - I don't know how you can make a 15 hour beat'em'up not feel stale at any point in time. Game just keeps throwing new challenges at you at all times. Always challenging, alway gotta adapt. You fight a gorilla in a wrestling costume.

Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door - Amazingly creative Super Mario adventure. Could feel stale if you played the first one recently, but in the end it's shinier than the latter. It's funny, but also still takes itself serious enough compared to Mario & Luigi.

Super Metroid - Unbelievable level design and the atmosphere it could pull off is still mindblowing.

Skies of Arcadia: Legends- Pure adventure. Feels like you've actually discovered a whole world by the end.

Okami - I can overlook its overblown handholding because of everything else.

Nier - I haven't played this too long ago, so I don't know if it would stay here after I digested it more? I absolutely didn't get ohters gripes with the gameplay. Felt like a very competent (more actioney) Zelda-clone with awesome variety. GOAT soundtrack, great use of the medium to tell a (super depressing) narrative. Rough around the edges, but only the sidequests are really bad.

excluding handhelds games, otherwise I can't handle this.
