but I'm not expecting that much fun... i just wanna revisit the old world, pre Cataclysm, before everything got absurdly easy and yes before you babies accuse me of being a noob FYI i was there at the american beta in 2004 and euro beta in 2005
so im expecting it'll get boring eventually
the question is how soon... stay tuned!

Vanilla WoW is probably one of my favorite gaming memories.
Legion is good, but WotLK = fav expansion. :heartbeat

so did the game originally have different maps / quests / classes that cataclysm changed? I never understood the difference between old wow and new wow.

I leveled a Rogue through some of BWL when Rebirth was first up. I guess that server is dead now, but I don't know if I have it in me to level another 1x EXP 60 again. Vanilla is an incredible experience and holds my fondest gaming memories (I met my wife there), but every DPS class that isn't Rogue has annoying secondary / support functions that I'm just not interested in. Tranq shot isn't too bad for Hunters, but Mages and Warriors in particular are very irritating to play when you don't want to be support.
Needing to pay attention while leveling is one of the early WoW expansions' best aspects. You will die on many classes prior to obtaining certain abilities if you pull more than one mob at a time. Elites are (generally) not soloable. While I'm sure the #1 reason for pay to skip leveling microtransactions to exist is time, I'd argue that the next factor is how mindnumbingly boring it is now. 1-60 in Legion consists of literally 1-shotting most mobs.
On that note, keep in mind that Warriors will eventually be tank bitch Dufus. There's never enough of them until you're doing 40s and even then some of the weird ass encounters require 8 tanks.

WoW is embarrassingly casual now, especially in terms of how fast the leveling has gotten (plus the fact that you can buy the 100 first levels). But I never raided much (only some of the old era content), and was always more into the chill exploration/question aspects of the game.
It has improved though, it's a very good game (loved Legion), and apparently the end game raid is still good too. So it fits for all. Easy to get a decent iLvl for mid-level raid and work your way up as usual. But it's pretty damn boring to play alone. I tried it, didn't really last long because my guild suddenly got all mad at each other for dumb shit so I left and didn't bother trying to find a new. But anyway, leveling is enjoyable and there are lotsa things to do. I still wanna go back but I don't really have anyone to play with.

Wotlk was the golden age, before the dungeon finder patch. Vanilla was... well, i miss some of the novelty but most of the stuff i liked about it survived until Wotlk.
Legion fucking ruined my favorite classes. Rip locks and huntards.

Burning Crusade is the sweet spot for me, but Ulduar is the single greatest raid they ever created.
I think WotLK has had good emulation and scripting for a while now, but there haven't been many good options for BC.

MoP was a surprisingly amazing expansion in a sea of mediocre, but Legion has been pretty good too.
And rotations were almost never as complex as they are now, were in MoP, etc. back in Vanilla - WotLK. Hell, Vanilla rotations are actual "2-3-4-2-3-4-2-3-4" rotations that will put you to sleep.

Their problems with the talent trees were that people generally fell into predetermined mix max options, but I did like the flexibility they offered that are completely missing now. Things like Combat Daggers in late Vanilla for Rogues, Hemo spec, etc. just aren't part of the game anymore. There were some interesting specs you could mix together event if they weren't 100% maximum DPS.

Having read a few chinese novels, Mop is garbage considering the source material. So much potential lost in terms of what you can actually do with Chinese and Asian mythology as well as cultural concepts.

3 reasons why vanilla WoW is remembered so fondly:
-Forced grouping and community > this has been 100% destroyed and will never come back thanks to QOL improvements like LFG buttons /cross server play, imho this is what made it an MMO, a breathing living world you played in, now its all anonymous shit
-First MMO experience for most
-Nostalgia

It was pretty technically advanced when it came out. Animations, graphics and physics were very good for a mmo in the early 2000s.

High end FFXIV combat is considerably more complicated than WoW has pretty much ever been. There are only a few specs at specific points in time I can think of in WoW that were anything close to what XIV demands.
Mechanics are apples and oranges.

i already played FFXIV and its a pretty shallow game
i mean it's that when people talk about FFXIV it's mostly about player housing, the combat system and dungeons etc are just shallow and you get bored pretty easily with it
all i remember is that it's more relaxing to play than WoW but also more convoluted, confusing, and not particularly satisfying
certainly not worth a monthly fee
