Title: Retrogaming! Games, consoles, setups, displays, modding and emulation! Up to PS2 Era
Post by: Rich! on October 22, 2017, 04:42:38 PM
Sup. In general, this is a one-stop thread for retrogaming. Considering how time has flown past, I guess everything up to the PS2/XB/GC era can be considered as retro (fuck me, nearly 20 years since that gen started and nearing 25 if you count the Dreamcast as the start).

Retrogaming can cover emulation, hardware, clone consoles, literally anything that's too old for kids today to appreciate properly is good enough

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
STANDARDS
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Before moving onto the consoles in turn, it's a good idea to get to grips with the video standards and tech used. I'll just do a quick rundown and expand on it later:

NTSC/PAL & 50/60hz: These are the two most widely used video standards, with enough of a difference between them to make a gigantic difference between what one region experienced to another when it comes to gaming. NTSC (Never (Twice) the Same Color) was/is predominately used in Japan and the Americas with PAL (phase alternating lines) being used in the UK/EU/China and elsewhere - with some regions such as France using a slight variant called SECAM (cant remember). NTSC has a resolution of 525 TV Lines and a standard framerate of 30fps for video and 60hz refresh. PAL has a superior resolution of 625 lines and a larger colour range, but a reduced refresh rate of 50hz. Now, the majority of games were designed for NTSC displays which is why PAL gamers got shafted. Lazy PAL conversions (such as the majority of Sega titles) simply slowed the game down by 17.5% to acheive the correct 50hz refresh rate and displayed the same NTSC resolution with large borders. It was hell.

RGB/Composite/S-Video/RF:

With RGB, video is transmitted via four lines - Red, Green, Blue and Sync. This offers the most accurate and closest to source image and colour. RGB is usually transmitted by EUROSCART or JP21 (they look the same, but are wired differently) connections. As the name implies, SCART was standard in the UK and Europe/Aus. Almost without exception, every CRT and LCD to date in these regions support RGB natively. It was never a standard in America however - in America the best TVs could display was either Composite (yellow jack, combined signal), RF (shitty aerial cable/prong of hell) or S-Video (closer to RGB, relied on lumaseince similar to component, but not widely supported). Component became a later option in the HD era, even on some CRTs, but component is not a native output on retro consoles with the first such examples being in the PS2 era. There's also a wide range of sync types when dealing with RGB signals - so yeah, shit can get confusing.

What makes all of this even more confusing to begin with is that not every console supports RGB out of the box. Not every console supports S-Video. Some region consoles support RGB when others don't (GameCube). Some have regional lockouts on video outputs (Wii). Luckily you can hack the shit out of most of them and bend them to your will. On the topic of RGB:

NES/Famicom:Do not support RGB by standard. Can be added in using Viletim's NESRGB board or Kevtris' Hi-Def-NES board. Not a mod for the beginner. Worth sticking to NTSC with this one as most PAL games are beyond fucked and there's no real way as far as I know to region mod a NES sucessfully.

SEGA Mega Drive/Genesis/Master System: RGB supported as standard, and the console is easy to region mod. good guy sega

Super Nintendo/Super Famicom: All standard SNES consoles support RGB via the Multi Out port right out of the box (although PAL and NTSC consoles must use different SCART cables due to wiring differences). The second revision of the SNES, the SNS-101 and SFC Jr, do not support RGB natively and need a simple mod to enable it via an RGB amp.

Playstation and Sega Saturn: RGB output as standard on all models and revisions. Region setting is based on disc software. no modding needed at all, unless you want to add a modchip for true region free/backups without disc swapping.

N64: Does not output RGB out of the box, but first revision boards can be modified easily. All others output S-Video nicely or can be modded using Viletim's N64 RGB board or the expensive but awesome UltraHDMI board for HDMI output.

There's other examples, but the best bet is to browse http://retrorgb.com/ as it goes into far more detail than I could for each console.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
DISPLAYS/SCALERS
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

here's a range of various methods to display your consoles on a modern display from the cheap and nasty £20 HDMI adapters on Amazon to the high range OSSC and Framemeister. Simiarly there's a wide range of CRTs ranging from the cheap and shitty to the ludicrously expensive/excessive. I couldn't decide what I wanted so I ended up with both an OSSC and a CRT - and they each have their own huge plus points and drawbacks. I made a review of the OSSC a while back at http://richretro.wordpress.com/ (don't worry, I don't get any money from this - it's just to document my stuff and help others out) which goes through my thoughts of it (it's a superb piece of kit, but not for anyone who hasn't read up on what their consoles can output).

If you can get a decent CRT with RGB input though, definitely go for it. This is my JVC broadcast monitor I got for cheap and added RGB input to:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
CONSOLES
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm not going to list every generation and console - man, that's too much. Especially when wikipedia has such a nice article already done: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_home_video_game_consoles

Anyhow enough of that, share your favourite games, talk retro and share setups and shit I guess.

On the subject of retro faves: Raimais is my favorite maze game. It has 1) very many boards, 2) lets you choose which level you go to next, has upgrades for your cool spacecar (don't transfer between levels), 3) has boss fights against big robo-insects, 4) good music, 5) has fully voiced cut-scenes of the villain taunting you, 6) a hairy maze goblin who gives you stuff and is horny, 7) has a great ending sequence (complete with multiple endings; aka it has a fuck-you-try-again ending if you didn't meet the requirements for the good ending*)

Bad score game though. It's all about tedious respawn milking, which is bad. There is a mechanic to discourage you from hanging around on a stage for too long (meteors start dropping) but it's hardly an issue, so it's not like it introduces any tension to the mindless grinding. no score play onegai~

Here's a run-through of the game by Replay Burners (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H2HCLbqCk5M)

*there is also a secret ending that no one has manage to get, and it was only recently found to be an actual ending rather than just remnant data tucked away on the rom, but the requirements to get it are some wild speedrun+RNG superhero shit

I've been collecting a ton of Sega Saturn games recently, mostly imports [played on a US system with the 4-in-1 Action Replay]. Just using the standard composite cable to an HDTV, not the greatest image quality but that doesn't really concern me too much.

All but a few are Japanese imports, so the language barrier is pretty significant for a lot of those, but I do enjoy the collected side of it even if I can't really play some of them very much. And there's still quite a few more games that I want, but they're on the higher end of the cost spectrum [most are $50+, some are $100+].

tbh the GBA port has a couple of patches to restore the SNES sounds and colours. It's much better then for sure

I like retro games! I like them more than most of what's coming out now, to be honest. Don't really have to money/space to get retro systems (all I have RN is a second-hand Wii U I got in the cheap) so I mostly resort to emulators.

Currently replaying Donkey Kong Country 2 on Retroarch using my Wii U Pro Controller on PC, right after finishing Tropical Freeze. Still good. I like this series more than I give it credit for.

Yeah, I preordered one last week - and I already have an rgb modded SFC Jr and OSSC combo! It looks awesome, and being an FPGA based device is a 100% accurate match to the SNES (no emulation). Like the NT Mini (NES), Kevtris designed the console - and he released a jailbroken firmware for the NT Mini that allowed the FPGA to emulate other hardware and load roms from SD.

If he does the same for the Super NT...oh man, it'll be incredible.

also its just been announced today that every Super NT console will come with a free, boxed, unreleased version of Super Turrican on cart: https://www.vgprice.com/article/an-unreleased-snes-game-is-being-released-with-the-super-nt?refr

Super nes classic has me thinking about retro games lately, and I’ve been thinking about building some kind of emulator box. I don’t really want to play anything newer than Early to mid 90s SNES and arcade games.

Is a retro pi a good solution? Does it run MAME? I have a pc, but would like something that’s not tied to it, ideally.

A raspberry pi with a premade image (cough arcadepunks.com cough) + wired 360 controllers will make you a happy person.

That being said I've really fucked myself with last weekend's Portland Retro Gaming Expo:

DKC2 is legit one of the best games ever. I got it without playing the first back in 1995 when it released and it was always weird going back to DKC1 after. DKC3 is amazing too.

Whenever I have a spare hour and a half free I fire up DKC2 on my SNES and CRT and give it a quick playthrough from start to finish. Best time so far is an hour fifteen minutes or so.

You are always nuking your collection (and you will rebuild it again, deep inside you know it).

If I was in Japan or had any money I would have made you rich(er) buying your retro empires.

I'm building a retrocorner myself. CRT, some selected consoles and Everdrives.

oh yeah I've been having a bit of fun recently with randomizers for fresh playthroughs of old games. There's a good list of them here: http://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php?topic=22579.0

The best I've found so far is the Zelda: Link to the Past one (http://vt.alttp.run/randomizer). You can select different variants for swapping the location of items and weapons throughout the world and swap cave/dungeon/house entrances around. Once done you can then use the rom it generates with the LTTP enemizer (https://zarby89.github.io/Enimizer/) to randomize all the enemies and bosses.

It's awesome. I've just started a new playthrough, as Mario. Got a shovel in the chest at the start and my uncle gave me a bottle instead of a shield. Managed to get a good stock of weapons, about to tackle the first dungeon (which is really the third) - and I've just paid 500 rupees to the zora king who gave me a single fucking rupee in return. cunt.

I dunno what specifically you like about it, but for strictly game cataloging I think the Backloggery is pretty good. Really nice community too.

On-topic: I have a phat PS2 which I have kept clean and it runs pretty good/quiet. The thing is it doesn't like to read discs very often, out of 10 tries it will eject the disc maybe 4 times, say it's unreadable 5 times, and actually boot it once. Is that a problem with the laser or something? Can I fix it?

Sounds like a laser problem to me, if it's a fat PS2 its not out of the realm to think its just general usage issue. Since I have no technical skills I would just buy a new one, but someone else can chime in.

Plus the slim PS2 is just too cute and small not to keep instead.

If I was in Japan or had any money I would have made you rich(er) buying your retro empires.

I'm building a retrocorner myself. CRT, some selected consoles and Everdrives.

My launch unit eventually developed this issue. It has to do with the laser becoming misaligned over time. It first manifests with DVD games, since the accuracy requirements for those are more exacting. The few CD games you might have (silver bottom) probably read fine or at least more reliably.

There's a little gear inside the drive you can turn to try and re-calibrate it, but that only temporarily alleviated the issue in my case. It's also inaccessible without partially disassembling the console, which makes it a pain in the ass to find the sweet spot in the first place. I ended up buying another unit (financing someone's WoW habit in the process), but you can probably still get replacement lasers or drives off of ebay should that turn out to be cheaper.

An even neater solution would be to get a network adapter and a hard drive to play your games off of that instead, but I don't know how readily available they are. Might just be more cost effective and easiest to replace the entire thing.

That's as far as my 'knowledge' goes. I'm way out of the loop on this stuff, so, time for some links:

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=555706 (It's probably a graveyard now and the OP is thin on anything useful, but there's bound to be something in there if you search for laser or disc read error.)

https://gbatemp.net/forums/sony-playstation-1-2.164/ (The only other destination I could immediately think of, but you'll have to do some digging again.)
Hell, Youtube! I remember looking at guides on how to put FreeMcBoot on a memory card (and then on what fun stuff I could do with it, besides playing import games.)

I've got all my games [retro and otherwise] cataloged here:

https://www.snupps.com/GreatRumbler

Used to have a lot more stuff [games and systems], but sold quite a few about 7-8 years ago for some reason. :-\
Oh No, I wish I had not discovered this website.

I dunno what specifically you like about it, but for strictly game cataloging I think the Backloggery is pretty good. Really nice community too.

I just like cataloging my collection.

I use VGcollect right now.

No big deal. :B

If it doesn't work out there's always emulation. PCSX2 isn't as robust or well-constructed as Dolphin, but it's serviceable enough for a wide variety of games.

Hm...how does the neogeo CD stack up? It seems like a decent option, but the loading times are a bit of a worry. should I expect more than what you'd normally get on the Saturn/PS1? I have Metal Slug on the Saturn if that's a good comparison.

IIRC the Neo CD has a 1x cd drive so you'll get much more loading than the 2x (or was it 4x) in Saturn/PS1. If you can't get the AES carts, the Saturn ports are acceptable alternatives.

Well that's the thing...I have this MVS already:

Only cost me £20, so I was taking a chance - I haven't tested it yet as I haven't got a supergun, and it has a slight amount of wear here:

Not sure if I should chance it or not. If it works, I'll get a multicart.

I've toyed around with the idea of getting one of those Sony PVM's because those seem to be all the rage in retro circles, but I have a strong feeling we'll a resurgence of CRT sets in a few years. Even as a novelty. I mean you got Analogue making the NT line, it's only a single logical next step to start making retro TV sets as well.

Ahhh, I've talked to a lot of people about this -- apparently the factories required to build these are history, and the amount of cash required to make new ones is near-insurmountable. HOWEVER the good news is that there are still people who can repair these things, and a recapped / recalibrated CRT looks absolutely drop-dead gorgeous. (I got my Astro City's monitor fixed by a guy in Wisconsin, and it looks INCREDIBLE). Also, these  things are MEANT to be repaired, unlike a $250 Vizio.

I highly recommend finding a PVM -- just be patient, don't pay out the wazoo for it, you'll find one for cheap or maybe free. I scored a 13-inch Sony and it's beautiful, but I've been looking for a while. I HIGHLY recommend contacting a local electronics recycler -- just call (or show up) and introduce yourself and tell them you'll pay cash for a PVM, they get TONS of them.

This is good info, I also daydreamed about the chances of having someone commercializing a "Retro TV", too bad it doesn't seem feasible.

I have become a hoarder of CRTs since I lost my first one, now I have two that I have been collecting from people I know. I always have a hard time explaining why the hell I want those monsters.

There's a combination of things a good CRT offers that cant yet be replicated all at once by any other display - zero input lag, perfect colour reproduction, very high contrast ratio and near perfect black/white levels if calibrated right. Problem is that its getting harder and harder to find one thats worth bothering with nowadays. I think the OSSC is pretty much the best alternative you could hope for when it comes to playing retro consoles today as it offers zero processing/input lag (the only lag introduced is by your display) and incredibly accurate colour reproduction and a wealth of display options from native 240p right up to x5 1080p.

If it wasn't for the fact that I came across my 19" JVC broadcast monitor cheaply for £25 knowing I could build an RGB input card for it, I would happily have never owned another CRT again as long as I have the OSSC. And even now I still prefer playing most games on the big screen via the OSSC although I do stick to the CRT for shmups and platformers.

I mean really, there's not really much difference between the two in terms of image quality other than the OSSC being much sharper and offering pixel-perfect modes:

top is my JVC (colours/white balance are off because of my phone camera) and the bottom is the OSSC on my TV.

Started up some MAME the past couple of days to play the Donpachi series. They're sooo good. Late-90's Cave was on fire. I'd still like to get the two releases on Saturn [DonPachi and DoDonPashi], but it'll be a while before I get them because the prices are a bit steep.

PSP Go is mud sandwich, I would get an actual PSP instead.

They're piss easy to hack and load up with dumps, and if you don't use PPPSPSPPSPSP or whatever, theres lots of good games you cant play anywhere else (ie. not available on Vita - unless the Vita hack lets you play those)

Yeah, I've had both before (bought a PSP at launch and hacked it using GTA:LCS as soon as I could). Out of the two designs though, the PSP GO fits me better as I can shove it in my pocket and not give a shit. It's like the GB Micro of the playstation world. and 16gb storage as standard is pretty damn good.

My local cex has a few of each model so I'll probably get one at least next week. I just want to be able to play SOTN on the go again really.

The PSP is legit, and I love that it's still possible to find games brand new on amazon for decent prices ($30 or so for Persona 1? Nice). I went with the PSP Go back when it came out and thought I was so cool for "future proofing" my collection by going digital, but I hate that fact that so many games were never released on PSN, like the Final Fantasy I and II remakes or Crisis Core.

(It is worth it for hooking up to a TV and linking to a dualshock 3, though.  :D)

All that said, I went back a few years ago and snagged a PSP-3000 and I've been content ever since.

Some random tidbits:
-Retro USB's "AVS" NES/famicom clone system is my jam. I highly recommend the console for any lazy/cheap slobs like myself who are too cheap to get an Analogue NT mini, but still want those old games in HD. I haven't tried the wireless controller for it, though.

-On the topic of clone consoles, has anyone here tried Cyber Gadget's "Retro Freak" multi-console? The fansite tinycartridge had some nice coverage for it, and from reviews on youtube it seems pretty cool. Moreso than a Retron 5, anyway.

Do you mean via the Final Fantasy Origins PS1 compilation or the full remakes?  I know the remakes are up on the European PSN, but they aren’t up in the US for whatever reason. Or were they up and then delisted? :(

The PSP Go would have been total garbage, but with CFW it's awesome...no need to worry about what's on PSN when you can just download and install all the games yourself.

Haven't played mine in a few years already, though.  Especially now with the GPD WIN out there.  That has become my one-stop emulation machine.  Actually have been thinking about getting a GPD XD as well, since there's a few emulators that work better on Android and I know I'm going to inevitably get rid of the WIN when the WIN 2 is out in a year or so.

Play the FF PSP remakes for better graphics and easy easy easy mode (introduction of MP, gold/exp significantly increased, EXP table values halved, auto re-target). Play Origins for the old school challenge (still retains D&D style spell charges, almost as much grinding as NES versions, original EXP level tables).

I got a PSP recently with a relatively cheap Dracula X Chronicles. Been a little off-put by SotN being displayed in a frame in the already small PSP screen, especially since SotN physcial was my main reason for getting it. Luckily, Rondo of Blood is pretty ace.
Also got Breath of Fire 3 and Valkyrie Profile. Not sure whether I continue the former, it seems a little too slow and time consuming compared to BoF4. VP seems like Vagrant Story, as in you need a guide to make sense of any of the mechanics, which I'm not too fond of. But since VP was one of the main reasons for getting a PSP, I guess I'll try it again later at some point.

Been talking to my wife about my Xmas present and it’s between a Super Nintendo mini, or a Apple Pi setup with the intention of just putting retro games on it.

Any advances to the Super Nintendo classic over the PI? I’m assuming emulators in 2017 can now handle all Super fx chips, etc and the emulation is pretty much perfect?

Slow compared to BOF4? I remember BOF4 had really sluggish controls and was really slow, not to mention the environments were so cramped it was hard to tell where you were going. I've played 1,3,4,5 and think 4 is probably the weakest so far (we'll see once I finally give 2 a shot).

They both have battles that take way too long to load and animate attacks. But at least BoF4's dungeons are only like 2 rooms large and there's no world map, so you can finish it in like 30 hours max. BoF3 just seems completely bloated on top of the slow gameplay, plus I thought the story/presentation in 4 was more engaging.

BOF3's only terrible part is when you have to deal with Sunder and Balio the horses. WE ESCAPED! Nevermind now we got caught. WE ESCAPED AGAIN!

Huuuuge sore spot. Once you become an adult I think it gets way better.

BoF3's loading is significantly cut if you're using an overclocked PSP (or emulator), from what I recall I never had an issue with the load times. Just the high encounter rate.

I started 4 when it was put up on PSN but I never finished it. :-\

Playing around with the Wii in my son's nursery and I still had some Wii points.  I used them for Fighting Street.  Why oh why?  The game is horrible.  I'm surprised it ever actually got a sequel and spawned one of the biggest game series ever.

I did exactly this project over the weekend. Got the SNES Pi case, 2 8BitDo wireless controllers and everything.

The games all play fine. I haven’t noticed anything too glaringly wrong, but I also probably have low standards.

Things I don’t like are how the system doesn’t ever turn off. There is no way to power it down or put it to sleep without buying a special switch. I also don’t feel comfortable not having a keyboard hooked up to it yet. I keep having to go in and tweak settings, but hopefully that won’t happen much longer. Like last night for some reason my system volume was turned all the way down somehow and I couldn’t exit out of the config screen with just the controller so I had to hook the keyboard back up.
I also don’t like how the select button acts as your hot key. How the fuck am I supposed to switch monkeys in DKC? Assigning it to something else didn’t seem to make it work at all.

I also don’t like how if your controller has analog sticks, you can’t use them in place of the d-pad. I think you can custom configure the controls for every game, but that’s a bit of a pain.

It’s alright, overall. I suspect the SNES Classic is an overall better user experience.

I wonder if I should still go through the hassle of getting Wii Points before the shop dies... got Chrono Trigger on DS and Rondo of Blood on PSP, so I think I should be good on the VC front? Maybe I'll get these Wiiware Final Fantasy spinoffs (unless I'm too lazy).

With the PC Engine only having two buttons you played something a lot closer to this version of the arcade game:

IIRC, Final Fight's arcade success led them to re-evaluate fighting games and with it Street Fighter's one-on-one aspect.

I was honestly surprised that the Wii Shop still works.  Apparently they're keeping it up until the end of January 2019 (!) so they must still be making some money off of it.  It was incredibly slow to download but that my be my Wifi.

I think the original concept of the side scrolling beat em up Street Fighter was eventually used on Street Fighter 2020 on NES.

This is fantastic. I’m not sure what the age range of the average bore poster is but as a borderline elderly individual yelling at clouds and frightened and confused by the modern world, retro games hit me in the nostalgia particularly hard.

I have a SNES, PS1, fat PS2, Genesis and even an old Atari 5200. But other than the ancient Atari cartridges  I have next to no games. I want to kick myself thinking of all the stuff I unloaded at Funcoland I The late 90s/early 00s. The thing that kills me most is somehow, loaning to friends and losing track, my Turbografx got lost as they can be a bit expensive to pick up and recap. (Especially if you want a TurboDuo.) Double regrets traced back to high school when I sold my Master System at a tag sale to buy the TurboGrafx. Why oh why was I so poor and dumb as a kid?

I hope to get some everdrives for the SNES and Genesis, but part of me wonders if that is just some unnecessary purist impulse. I have all the emulators and they mostly work very well. I’d also love to pick up a CRT from eBay or a tag sale but space is a bit tight in my current apartment.

As for what I’ve been actually playing recently, my brother was kind enough to loan me his Dreamcast (I bartered mine away to my roommate to settle a debt regarding our bills) so that I could play Shenmue I & II before III comes out. I’ve been having a lot of fun with Dolphin too, recently.

Speaking of the borderline elderly, there are some dorky middle aged guys with dad jokes that do a decent series on YouTube chronicling all kinds of retro systems and games, Game Sack. I’d recommend it. They are a bit corny and maybe even bland but I love it, especially when they get into lesser known stuff like the Sharp X68000.

most of my stuff from before Playstation got lost/sold/stole (had TWO copies of secret of mana that got snatched...), so I've tried to hold on extra tight to games I love since then. i don't have money or desire to get a crt and all that, but it's fun to bust out some classics every once in a while and remember why they're so good.

don't kick yourself too much using emulators; classic games are overpriced and some of them look or run better on pc anyways. plus it's easy to play all those great games that never initially got released here.

True. That’s my main reasoning that if I do buy more retro stuff, it’ll be an everdrive or two first and foremost. But in the meantime I’ve indulged my inner digital hoarder with gigs upon gigs of roms.

Buy and hack a NES/SNES Classic they rule

I went to the record store today and found a virgin fresh copy of FF7, its getting difficult to find good games, all you see at shops are garbo games. Its very tempting to just go on ebay and buy stuff instead.

B-but my SNES and Genesis. Banished to the closet for years  :'(

It is getting expensive for sure. But the basic everdrive is only $5 more, no hacking required.
http://www.stoneagegamer.com/super-everdrive-basic.html
Also the SNES classic is sold out right now. Cheapest scalper I see is $140, and they jump up quickly to $200, $500 and even $1000. It does have the HDMI built in, but my TV and projector have composite jacks. In any event it’s emulators for now, and the handful of games I do have.

Rocking through the N64 lineup at the moment on an Everdrive 64 on a Sony PVM I picked up at the Portland retro expo. Whenever I go deep I usually do things via the emulation route, but Nintendo 64 emulation has never seemed to work so great for me.

What a fucking weird system this was, the architecture had a lot of great decisions that were countered by catastrophically bad ones.

I've been buying PS2/GC/Xbox games left and right lately since they are extremely cheap. Still looking for  Outrun 2006 on the cheap.
I really want a Virtual Boy,though. Always wanted to see that trainwreck first hand. But actually finding one is a huge pain in the ass.

I have two of them, and about 90% of the US library. They are fragile as shit and will eventually crap out and require a fix by someone who knows what to do with it. I'm probably going to ask someone on /r/VirtualBoy to do the visor fix on my other unit.

They went up in price, a shitty game like 3D Tetris fetches upwards to $80 for cart only.

The thing is that the VB didn't sell at all so there is virtually no chance to stumble across one in a yard sale and you have to pay through the nose at enthusiast stores. I once thought it was a neat idea to collect systems that were utter failures like the 3do, CDi or the Jaguar and the VB would fit in perfectly.

I found all mine on CraigsList, but they definitely arent something you will find often. I woudlnt be surprised if people just threw it away after it crapped out on them

Even individual parts go for some money, since its so difficult to find. Stuff like Battery Holders, not-broken stands (these break super easily), etc

I've had one since I bought it when it first released back in 1995 as a wee youngin

It's a modified action replay cart that allows you to play imports AND backups! No need to disc swap, just put the disc in and enjoy. The only drawback over the regular Action Replay is that you can't manage saved games and you cant use the action replay stuff. It's no big deal.

There are more advanced carts out there with SD adapters that allow you to run games straight out of it, but it's not super compatible so far.

Since my saturn is the japanese version, its going to be great to be able to pick up american versions of games!

All my local places seemed to shift over to 360/PS3 a couple years ago and that stuff somehow disappeared overnight :-\

I feel like even the Wii wasn't around for long, I should probably go up to the north side of town to the semi-hub of three or four independent places all in a set of strip malls along a few miles (that seem to exist to exist for their friends, not to make profit and be an actual business like the ones on my end), also that "antique mall" that at one point was half actual antiques half people renting the booths to sell comics, Magic cards, Warhammer figures, modern video games, etc.

Back in like 2006-2008 I had a great time raiding this one particular GameStop's bins of PS1 (?!?), PS2 and Xbox games. Multiple times the checkout dude was like "aww man I was hoping nobody saw that until I clocked out" and it was my sweet sweet revenge against him trying to sell me Game Informer subscriptions and carding me every single time for M rated games, something not even Wal-Mart has ever done.

Most of the time it was just him being semi-bummed than legit mad, except for the time I set the copy of Zone of the Enders I found (it had been badly hidden, but I was used to looking through their crap because they never organized it in any manner and often put the games the wrong way in one bin so you couldn't just stand there and see the labels but had to flip through them) for $4 on the counter and he was all "yo, can you check this guy out I need to hit the john" to the only other employee who was ever there in those days.

The Saturn was a System I ignored in the UK because it was expensive and the PlayStation was a known factor

But hot damn, when I picked one up for 10 quid with 20 games and played it I really liked its gimpy nature - something about the feel of it that I liked.

I bought it retail when it came out. The only disappointment (for me) is that the resolution of SotN can't be modified like the PSN digital version of the PSX original.

Timu, did you get far enough to find Nina's sister?

Not from what I recall. I'll have to dig the system out sometime and see where I stopped. I think I got on the ship and started the search but stopped due to other games at the time.

I should probably get one of these PSP-TV connectors to play the the SotN ROM on DXC. Either way, with (Saturn?) SotN and Rondo of Blood + remake it's really one of the best collections. I guess it could have still had the SNES interpretation though.

You'd definitely remember if you had. It's pretty crazy. :whoo Not worth playing the game for that moment alone, but I'll spoiler it anyway.

The fact that all classic Vania games that come out are remakes the past twenty years grinds my gears. Especially since the only metroidvania's worth playing are symphony and aria.

And then Iga makes Bloodstained and it's another fucking Metroidvania but I want Classic Vania, III style.

But I think that I'll definitely get Adventure Rebirth before the Wii dies, unless mine isn't working anymore.

You play Eccelsia? I thought that was pretty damn good, a good deal more challenging than the other Metroidvanias, but also more linear/less exploration-focused. The optional clock tower level is probably some of the best level design in all the Metroidvanias...

Classicvania isn't even that good. The constant annoyance of -stairs- alone makes sure of that.  :doge Rondo of Blood is the best, since it has the most QOL improvements. Even 4, while good, still has lots of bullshit especially towards the end. Faux-pitfalls because the camera in a vertical level moved too far up? Fuck off.

I didn't have problems dealing with the stairs, but they constantly interrupt the games' (already slow) pacing for no reason that ever made sense to me. I don't know, I always much prefered the agility of Contra - which Rondo of Blood comes closest to (especially with Maria).

There was never a better opinion said on these forum.

SOTN was cool when it came out mainly because of the artstyle, but gameplay wise it is lacking. It's just way too easy.
And when people are takling about Classicvania they are talking about Super Castlevania aka Baby's first Caslevania for some reason.

Castlevania was amazing but the side scroller genre was mostly dead at that point so the series had to reinvent itself. and they did, with another set of phenomenal games.

With a set of games that overstayed its welcome and had a spotty track record. And there was nothing "reinvent" about SOTN. It was Metroid with rpg elements and Metroid established a formula way back in the 80's.
Title: Re: Retrogaming! Games, consoles, setups, displays, modding and emulation! Up to PS2 Era
Post by: Positive Touch on November 12, 2017, 07:33:51 PM
cv always had a spotty track record tho, so that was nothing new. and the nonlinear metroid style was completely dead by the time sotn came out. hell, (almost?) no one even made a game like that, even after circle of the moon officially made metroidvania a "thing" so picking up that style and adding in rpg elements, which was the fad at the time, definitely was reinventing the series.
Title: Re: Retrogaming! Games, consoles, setups, displays, modding and emulation! Up to PS2 Era
Post by: Himu on November 12, 2017, 08:54:38 PM
what spotty track record? 1, 3, 4, Dracula X, and Bloodlines are all worth playing. 2 is too, if only for the novelty. Classic Vania, if you throw in Rebirth, is far more consistent than Metroidvania. It was reinventing the series, but the way you articulated, it made it seem all side scrollers had to reinvent the entire genre, so I read you wrong.
Title: Re: Retrogaming! Games, consoles, setups, displays, modding and emulation! Up to PS2 Era
Post by: Himu on November 12, 2017, 08:59:45 PM
It can also be argued that SOTN isn't even a reinvention but a reinterpretation. 2, 3, and X are all fairly non-linear compared to other platformers at the time. By the time SOTN came out CV had a very rich history with non-linearity. So I'm not seeing this "reinvention" especially in light of games like 3.

Been looking for one of these specific model 1 slots for a long time now at a decent price and went for this as soon as I saw it. It was £70+£30 postage from japan, unibios installed, and comes with KOF 2002. I'm gonna be turning it into a console, which is as simple as just adding a 5v input and RGBS out via a scart socket. It already has two controller ports and stereo audio out.

It's here! Well, almost - it's literally a five minute drive down the road from here at the parcelforce depot. along with a £32 customs fee to pay (half of that is a handling charge, fucking ridiculous). I'll pick it up tomorrow.

I've got a scart plug+mounting PCB, DC jack and on/off switch, 5v 3amp power adapter and 300x300mm black acrylic for mounting the MVS. It won't look incredible, but it'll work as a console and shouldn't take long to set up at all.

haven't got a controller yet though, that's a bit of an issue

heh thanks :D It's really a quite easy mod though - it's just a few wires on some points, and that's it. just tip the wires first with some solder, dab some flux onto the points, and press each wire onto the points with the iron a second at a time. done! It helps that this is the easiest MVS to consolize. but yeah if you haven't got experience with stuff like this, it's definitely intimidating when working with something you've spent a lot of money on.

Just hooked it up to my OSSC and it looks fantastic on the TV (crappy mobile phone pic though, sorry!). x5 1080p mode, so that's why there's a bit cut off at the bottom. it's full screen in x3 720p mode:

Yeah, but I'll probably just keep it as is now. Once I get the perspex layers on it'll be all set as a plug and play console. I've still got the Jamma connector easily accessible though.

Gonna buy a 161 in 1 multicart after Xmas, they seem like a good way to get a few games without spending thousands.

I got a Rapberry Pi for Xmas, and set it up with a premise image for retro games.

One thing that’s interesting is how much I notice the input lag on some games (especially Super Mario World).

I’m not sure if it’s because of the emulation or just because there’s a certain amount of inputnlag on new TVs that didn’t exist in 1991... but it really changes how it feels.

It's the pi itself plus your TV. The emulation on the pi has a considerable amount of lag, especially if using USB for input and not direct gpio polling.

And yeah compared to my CRT or even the ossc setup with real hardware, it's night and day - and unplayable for myself

This thing is incredible. It honestly feels and looks like the most premium console I've ever known - it's a stunning piece of kit. Not surprising considering it's built out of a single block of sheer aluminium.

The kevtris custom firmware is fantastic - removes the need for an everdrive entirely. Also having it function as a Game Boy/Color FPGA (along with game gear, master system, Atari) is just awesome. Perfect compatibility too.

Well worth the £400 I spent. Especially considering I sold my RGB Famicom and Everdrive for £300.

Yeah that's what I thought. I did the RGB mod myself - the board and the Famicom cost me £140 altogether and the Everdrive was £80. So straight away I'm £80 better off after selling it for £300. Also gotta consider that I had to use an OSSC to get the Famicom to display lag-free on an HDTV, and that has compatibility issues (and cost me £170). The NT Mini means I have no need to use an everdrive or the ossc, can still output to a CRT and also can be used to play Sega, Atari and Game Boy games.

Definitely worth it in my case tbh. FPGA consoles are the future really - exact same performance as the original hardware, with none of the drawbacks

Edit: oh and it came with a free 8bitdo NES30 pad and receiver in the box. That's £40 of controller right there.

Not a $500 glorified NES but I picked up Obscure on the Xbox

This game seems to have jumped up in price, but I found a disc & case only copy for $10 last week on ebay. Waiting for it to arrive, then will probably just buy a replacement booklet on eBay as well.

Obscure is a Resident-Evil type game involving high school students and monsters, along with their school's dark secret. It also starts out with a Sum 41 song (remember Sum 41? I member)

Was playing Adventure Island 2, Silkworm, and Shadow of the Ninja last night. Really fun games, Shadow of the Ninja in 2p mode is fun as hell but has tons of slowdown. Silkworm is also pretty neat in 2p mode. Adventure Island 2 has much tighter controls than the first game, but I wish there was a password feature, since the game is really long (8 worlds with like 8 stages in each).

yep...I'm amazed I managed to actually get one. I knew this was the last of them, but didn't realise just how few were left. Going by whats been said on atariage, there likely won't be any more as Analogue is moving towards the much cheaper Super NT.

I've been messing with the Game Boy Color core tonight and its awesome.

Bought the Xenosaga trilogy for $90 off eBay.  Seems like only the third game is really worth anything?  I see copies of the first and second game are readily available, even new.  All the discs and manuals are in great shape, but the box on 2 could be a bit better.  Still not gonna complain for the price.

That just leaves Xenogears on PS1 and I'll have the complete 'Xeno' set.  Not even sure if I care about buying that.  I owned a copy that I sold off a few years back before I decided to get more into collecting again.

Could you connect them to a CRT?

The NT Mini has full RGB analog video output support via a hd15 port (vga) at the back as well as 480p-1080p HD via HDMI, so yes

I'll be picking up a vga-scart cable from maplin tomorrow and then I'll be able to use it on my JVC CRT
Awesome. Looks like they are sold out though.

yep...I'm amazed I managed to actually get one. I knew this was the last of them, but didn't realise just how few were left. Going by whats been said on atariage, there likely won't be any more as Analogue is moving towards the much cheaper Super NT.

I've been messing with the Game Boy Color core tonight and its awesome.

Built an RGB scart cable for my NT Mini! Had a bit of trouble before realising the vga standard requires pins 4 and 10 to be connected to register as RGB. Looks awesome on my CRT:

yoooooooo bitches

I bought this last week for £20 on ebay:

According to the listing it's never been used, and going by the photos I believe it.

It's the Korean release of Yoshi's Island. And it's not in Korean - it's identical to the 1.1 version USA ROM. Boxed copies of this version go for £150+, so I think I've done alright here! Was dispatched on Monday, the tracking gave me the plane number itself and I watched it fly earlier today over Russia to Helsinki, Finland, along with its speed and altitude. Insane how we can track this kind of stuff nowadays.

I’m in the UK, so uh…I’ll give it a few more days.

Interesting- Was under the impression that South Korea did not get game consoles only until recently due to some kind of ban on console gaming, but it seems that this was not the case at all? (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_gaming_in_South_Korea#Home_console_predominance)  (Am not confusing this with China!)

EDIT: Maybe this is what I was thinking of-
Quote
Foreign companies like Sega and Nintendo had difficulty to enter the market, so they licensed out their consoles to Korean companies. Samsung took Sega's Master System, which was then released in April 1989 as the "Samsung Gam*Boy". Most of the games were released on Korea on their original languages, being Phantasy Star the first game to be fully translated to Hangul. One year later, the Mega Drive arrived with the name of "Super Gam*Boy", having on 1992 all Samsung consoles renamed to "Alladin Boy". Samsung also produced its own game, a shoot 'em up called "Uju Geobukseon". Hyundai was the responsible for the releasing the NES, named Comboy. However, It didn't have any translated games.

But I remember reading that you basically couldn't find home consoles in Korea for a while and everybody was gaming on PC.
:confused

Yeah I played a few Korean Master System games, they were pretty bad... I think there was a ban on Japanese corporations directly releasing consoles there but they usually went through a Korean company - Hyundai, Samsung, etc.

Does anybody have any experience with this?

(I don't really care about hardware emulation, I just want to play salamander with decent controls)

- I was originally looking for a stick to use with mame on my nvidia shield because the shield controller is shit tier, but I've watched some youtube videos of the built in pandoras box emulation and it seems pretty decent. I still can't find a definitive answer as to whether I could add my own roms to it though.

heh, well it's kinda like the ique in China - Nintendo had to pass on manufacturing/distribution to a south korean firm to enter the market. That was Hyundai, who marketed their line of Nintendo releases as the Comboy (FC/NES) and Super Comboy (sfc/snes)

aside from a couple of games, all of the Super Comboy releases are the USA versions, with the EU artwork or box (depending on game) in a JP shell or box (depending on game). It's bizarre but awesome. There weren't many releases, but they're all classics:

so yeah a neat oddity, but the prices are going up. I was lucky as fuck to get Yoshi's Island for £20.

I use mine with my arcade supergun, and my snes/sat/genesis/sms and it works perfect. AND IT LOOKS AMAZING.

Got some questions about the OSSC and Saturn/SMS -

Do you notice really obvious jailbars on the SMS?

Do you notice a loud static sound when playing Saturn?

I am using the cables from retrogamingcables.co.uk and have these issues...
