hey guys I don't give a shit about accurate picture quality or anything but I like to play old games let's chat about good times
JVC XEYEhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=031vKBPk5eA
is there some way to play the bonus levels from the gba version? I wanna do those without having to play an ass port first.
also I'm pumped about going for 100% again. been a loooong time since I did it and I remember it being brutal. payoff was shit too lol
I might buy one of these. $190 is not bad an SNES clone with 1080p support. https://www.analogue.co/pages/super-nt/
Well crap. Wished I had known about the premade images online. I literally spent 2 weeks tinkering and getting my Pi setup.
dunno bout these really but saw people using them for movies: https://letterboxd.com/
games: https://darkadia.com/
I like retro games! I like them more than most of what's coming out now, to be honest. Don't really have to money/space to get retro systems (all I have RN is a second-hand Wii U I got in the cheap) so I mostly resort to emulators.
Currently replaying Donkey Kong Country 2 on Retroarch using my Wii U Pro Controller on PC, right after finishing Tropical Freeze. Still good. I like this series more than I give it credit for.
i wish i'd catalogued my collection before i nuked it :/
anyways, i'm cleaning out one of the rooms in the house and finding all kinds of random retro junk/jank that i never realised i still had. perhaps i should sell it
I've got all my games [retro and otherwise] cataloged here:You should know that some human has put his picture on your account. Probably fallout from the whole Equifax thing.

Used to have a lot more stuff [games and systems], but sold quite a few about 7-8 years ago for some reason. :-\

You are always nuking your collection (and you will rebuild it again, deep inside you know it).
If I was in Japan or had any money I would have made you rich(er) buying your retro empires.
I'm building a retrocorner myself. CRT, some selected consoles and Everdrives.
On-topic: I have a phat PS2 which I have kept clean and it runs pretty good/quiet. The thing is it doesn't like to read discs very often, out of 10 tries it will eject the disc maybe 4 times, say it's unreadable 5 times, and actually boot it once. Is that a problem with the laser or something? Can I fix it?My launch unit eventually developed this issue. It has to do with the laser becoming misaligned over time. It first manifests with DVD games, since the accuracy requirements for those are more exacting. The few CD games you might have (silver bottom) probably read fine or at least more reliably.

There's a little gear inside the drive you can turn to try and re-calibrate it, but that only temporarily alleviated the issue in my case. It's also inaccessible without partially disassembling the console, which makes it a pain in the ass to find the sweet spot in the first place. I ended up buying another unit (financing someone's WoW habit in the process), but you can probably still get replacement lasers or drives off of ebay should that turn out to be cheaper.
An even neater solution would be to get a network adapter and a hard drive to play your games off of that instead, but I don't know how readily available they are. Might just be more cost effective and easiest to replace the entire thing.
That's as far as my 'knowledge' goes. I'm way out of the loop on this stuff, so, time for some links:
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=555706 (It's probably a graveyard now and the OP is thin on anything useful, but there's bound to be something in there if you search for laser or disc read error.)
https://www.reddit.com/r/ps2/ (The sidebar has some useful stuff at a quick glance, including how to set up a HDD solution.)
https://gbatemp.net/forums/sony-playstation-1-2.164/ (The only other destination I could immediately think of, but you'll have to do some digging again.)
Hell, Youtube! I remember looking at guides on how to put FreeMcBoot on a memory card (and then on what fun stuff I could do with it, besides playing import games.)

I dunno what specifically you like about it, but for strictly game cataloging I think the Backloggery is pretty good. Really nice community too.
Just wanted to say thanks for all this. I'm technically competent enough to fix my own laptops and PC's so I'd like to at least try with my PS2. Still got a few games even in that backlog pile, but mostly I just want to replay Drakengard 1 and 2.No big deal. :B
IIRC the Neo CD has a 1x cd drive so you'll get much more loading than the 2x (or was it 4x) in Saturn/PS1. If you can't get the AES carts, the Saturn ports are acceptable alternatives.

i'm cleaning the last few cupboards and thats it
I've toyed around with the idea of getting one of those Sony PVM's because those seem to be all the rage in retro circles, but I have a strong feeling we'll a resurgence of CRT sets in a few years. Even as a novelty. I mean you got Analogue making the NT line, it's only a single logical next step to start making retro TV sets as well.

Ahhh, I've talked to a lot of people about this -- apparently the factories required to build these are history, and the amount of cash required to make new ones is near-insurmountable. HOWEVER the good news is that there are still people who can repair these things, and a recapped / recalibrated CRT looks absolutely drop-dead gorgeous. (I got my Astro City's monitor fixed by a guy in Wisconsin, and it looks INCREDIBLE). Also, these things are MEANT to be repaired, unlike a $250 Vizio.
I highly recommend finding a PVM -- just be patient, don't pay out the wazoo for it, you'll find one for cheap or maybe free. I scored a 13-inch Sony and it's beautiful, but I've been looking for a while. I HIGHLY recommend contacting a local electronics recycler -- just call (or show up) and introduce yourself and tell them you'll pay cash for a PVM, they get TONS of them.

This is good info, I also daydreamed about the chances of having someone commercializing a "Retro TV", too bad it doesn't seem feasible.
I have become a hoarder of CRTs since I lost my first one, now I have two that I have been collecting from people I know. I always have a hard time explaining why the hell I want those monsters.
Where does the PSP fit into all this? I'll be playing a lot of it for now. I got a shitload of PS2 games coming in the mail. I pretty much can only really tolerate older console/handheld games and modern non-AAA PC games at this point.
PSP Go is mud sandwich, I would get an actual PSP instead.
They're piss easy to hack and load up with dumps, and if you don't use PPPSPSPPSPSP or whatever, theres lots of good games you cant play anywhere else (ie. not available on Vita - unless the Vita hack lets you play those)

Do you mean via the Final Fantasy Origins PS1 compilation or the full remakes? I know the remakes are up on the European PSN, but they aren’t up in the US for whatever reason. Or were they up and then delisted? :(
I got a PSP recently with a relatively cheap Dracula X Chronicles. Been a little off-put by SotN being displayed in a frame in the already small PSP screen, especially since SotN physcial was my main reason for getting it. Luckily, Rondo of Blood is pretty ace.
Also got Breath of Fire 3 and Valkyrie Profile. Not sure whether I continue the former, it seems a little too slow and time consuming compared to BoF4. VP seems like Vagrant Story, as in you need a guide to make sense of any of the mechanics, which I'm not too fond of. But since VP was one of the main reasons for getting a PSP, I guess I'll try it again later at some point.
Been talking to my wife about my Xmas present and it’s between a Super Nintendo mini, or a Apple Pi setup with the intention of just putting retro games on it.I did exactly this project over the weekend. Got the SNES Pi case, 2 8BitDo wireless controllers and everything.
Any advances to the Super Nintendo classic over the PI? I’m assuming emulators in 2017 can now handle all Super fx chips, etc and the emulation is pretty much perfect?
Playing around with the Wii in my son's nursery and I still had some Wii points. I used them for Fighting Street. Why oh why? The game is horrible. I'm surprised it ever actually got a sequel and spawned one of the biggest game series ever.

I wonder if I should still go through the hassle of getting Wii Points before the shop dies... got Chrono Trigger on DS and Rondo of Blood on PSP, so I think I should be good on the VC front? Maybe I'll get these Wiiware Final Fantasy spinoffs (unless I'm too lazy).
IIRC, Final Fight's arcade success led them to re-evaluate fighting games and with it Street Fighter's one-on-one aspect.

don't kick yourself too much using emulators; classic games are overpriced and some of them look or run better on pc anyways. plus it's easy to play all those great games that never initially got released here.True. That’s my main reasoning that if I do buy more retro stuff, it’ll be an everdrive or two first and foremost. But in the meantime I’ve indulged my inner digital hoarder with gigs upon gigs of roms.
Buy and hack a NES/SNES Classic they ruleB-but my SNES and Genesis. Banished to the closet for years :'(
I went to the record store today and found a virgin fresh copy of FF7, its getting difficult to find good games, all you see at shops are garbo games. Its very tempting to just go on ebay and buy stuff instead.

This is fantastic. I’m not sure what the age range of the average bore poster is but as a borderline elderly individual yelling at clouds and frightened and confused by the modern world, retro games hit me in the nostalgia particularly hard.
I have a SNES, PS1, fat PS2, Genesis and even an old Atari 5200. But other than the ancient Atari cartridges I have next to no games. I want to kick myself thinking of all the stuff I unloaded at Funcoland I The late 90s/early 00s. The thing that kills me most is somehow, loaning to friends and losing track, my Turbografx got lost as they can be a bit expensive to pick up and recap. (Especially if you want a TurboDuo.) Double regrets traced back to high school when I sold my Master System at a tag sale to buy the TurboGrafx. Why oh why was I so poor and dumb as a kid?
I hope to get some everdrives for the SNES and Genesis, but part of me wonders if that is just some unnecessary purist impulse. I have all the emulators and they mostly work very well. I’d also love to pick up a CRT from eBay or a tag sale but space is a bit tight in my current apartment.
As for what I’ve been actually playing recently, my brother was kind enough to loan me his Dreamcast (I bartered mine away to my roommate to settle a debt regarding our bills) so that I could play Shenmue I & II before III comes out. I’ve been having a lot of fun with Dolphin too, recently.
Speaking of the borderline elderly, there are some dorky middle aged guys with dad jokes that do a decent series on YouTube chronicling all kinds of retro systems and games, Game Sack. I’d recommend it. They are a bit corny and maybe even bland but I love it, especially when they get into lesser known stuff like the Sharp X68000.

Joe that SoM copy is gorgeous!
Miss those oldschool compilations that would get you 30 games for $20.
Local used game [and other stuff] place was doing a buy-2-get-1 sale the other day, so I grabbed some OG Xbox games that my collection was missing:
I've been buying PS2/GC/Xbox games left and right lately since they are extremely cheap. Still looking for Outrun 2006 on the cheap.
I really want a Virtual Boy,though. Always wanted to see that trainwreck first hand. But actually finding one is a huge pain in the ass.
I have two of them, and about 90% of the US library. They are fragile as shit and will eventually crap out and require a fix by someone who knows what to do with it. I'm probably going to ask someone on /r/VirtualBoy to do the visor fix on my other unit.
They went up in price, a shitty game like 3D Tetris fetches upwards to $80 for cart only.
the worst thing about playing virtual boy isn't the red on black or the cruddy 3d, but the way it gives you a headache when you play for more than 10 minutes at a time.i think it's probably the games on it actually
so today I got my Pseudo Saturn Kai ramcart for the Sega Saturn! :D
It's a modified action replay cart that allows you to play imports AND backups! No need to disc swap, just put the disc in and enjoy. The only drawback over the regular Action Replay is that you can't manage saved games and you cant use the action replay stuff. It's no big deal.
There are more advanced carts out there with SD adapters that allow you to run games straight out of it, but it's not super compatible so far.
Since my saturn is the japanese version, its going to be great to be able to pick up american versions of games!
:rejoice and finally get to try Elevator Action Returns without selling a kidney
All my local places seemed to shift over to 360/PS3 a couple years ago and that stuff somehow disappeared overnight :-\Local used game [and other stuff] place was doing a buy-2-get-1 sale the other day, so I grabbed some OG Xbox games that my collection was missing:I've been buying PS2/GC/Xbox games left and right lately since they are extremely cheap. I got a PS Kai at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo last year. It's fucking incredible. I bought a stack of 200 CD-Rs and burned almost all of them with Saturn shit I never thought I'd be able to play. DYNAMITE
Miss those oldschool compilations that would get you 30 games for $20.
Only problem is that the emulation usually was shitty low-quality emulation from Digital Eclipse. Though paying $20 for Taito Legends 2 and its 49 games was still amazing.

Re: DXC. When this game came out it was in my psp for three months straight. It was all I played in that time. Fucking amazing package
Timu, did you get far enough to find Nina's sister?
Not from what I recall. I'll have to dig the system out sometime and see where I stopped. I think I got on the ship and started the search but stopped due to other games at the time. You'd definitely remember if you had. It's pretty crazy. :whoo Not worth playing the game for that moment alone, but I'll spoiler it anyway.
I should probably get one of these PSP-TV connectors to play the the SotN ROM on DXC. Either way, with (Saturn?) SotN and Rondo of Blood + remake it's really one of the best collections. I guess it could have still had the SNES interpretation though.

The fact that all classic Vania games that come out are remakes the past twenty years grinds my gears. Especially since the only metroidvania's worth playing are symphony and aria.
And then Iga makes Bloodstained and it's another fucking Metroidvania but I want Classic Vania, III style.
Metroidvania is the best, Dawn > Aria.
But I think that I'll definitely get Adventure Rebirth before the Wii dies, unless mine isn't working anymore.

Castlevania was amazing but the side scroller genre was mostly dead at that point so the series had to reinvent itself. and they did, with another set of phenomenal games.
I just finished Silent Hill 2 on PS2
Holeeshit what a game
What's the best way to play #3?
Game Boy CV2 is a pretty good game with an incredible soundtrack.
Beautiful. And that original SNK seal :delicious
haven't got a controller yet though, that's a bit of an issue
haven't got a controller yet though, that's a bit of an issue
Can't you get a USB->Controller port (maybe? It's custom from what you're saying) converter and a cheap (like PS360 non-converted) arcade stick by MadCatz off Ebay for it? Be "close" to arcade-like, maybe?
That's incredible. My soldering is absolute dog shit though. There's no way I'd trust myself to solder into the points there without frying the board.
Dope. Can you Supergun it?
You really went all-in on that, dude! Let us know how it is.
I got a Rapberry Pi for Xmas, and set it up with a premise image for retro games.
One thing that’s interesting is how much I notice the input lag on some games (especially Super Mario World).
I’m not sure if it’s because of the emulation or just because there’s a certain amount of inputnlag on new TVs that didn’t exist in 1991... but it really changes how it feels.
Was going to say that price is just ridiculous, but hey, totally worth it after selling your modded NES and Everdrive!
:itagaki
Could you connect them to a CRT?
Awesome. Looks like they are sold out though.Could you connect them to a CRT?
The NT Mini has full RGB analog video output support via a hd15 port (vga) at the back as well as 480p-1080p HD via HDMI, so yes
I'll be picking up a vga-scart cable from maplin tomorrow and then I'll be able to use it on my JVC CRT

yep...I'm amazed I managed to actually get one. I knew this was the last of them, but didn't realise just how few were left. Going by whats been said on atariage, there likely won't be any more as Analogue is moving towards the much cheaper Super NT.
I've been messing with the Game Boy Color core tonight and its awesome.

i have a full x360 cave collection if anyone wants to throw copious cash at me - plus other crap.
.... i really should make a list
Foreign companies like Sega and Nintendo had difficulty to enter the market, so they licensed out their consoles to Korean companies. Samsung took Sega's Master System, which was then released in April 1989 as the "Samsung Gam*Boy". Most of the games were released on Korea on their original languages, being Phantasy Star the first game to be fully translated to Hangul. One year later, the Mega Drive arrived with the name of "Super Gam*Boy", having on 1992 all Samsung consoles renamed to "Alladin Boy". Samsung also produced its own game, a shoot 'em up called "Uju Geobukseon". Hyundai was the responsible for the releasing the NES, named Comboy. However, It didn't have any translated games.
Interesting- Was under the impression that South Korea did not get game consoles only until recently due to some kind of ban on console gaming, but it seems that this was not the case at all? (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_gaming_in_South_Korea#Home_console_predominance) (Am not confusing this with China!)
EDIT: Maybe this is what I was thinking of-QuoteForeign companies like Sega and Nintendo had difficulty to enter the market, so they licensed out their consoles to Korean companies. I hear it's nothing too great but now I own all 3 of the GB games CIB... next up I wanna get Turtles 2 and 3 for GB...
the ossc is the best purchase you can do right now. I don't get people who still want to even fuck with those damn sony PVM monitors :doge
I use mine with my arcade supergun, and my snes/sat/genesis/sms and it works perfect. AND IT LOOKS AMAZING.
