Title: Art thread of crippling self doubt
Post by: stufte on November 03, 2017, 01:22:16 PM
Now that the board is a bit more active, and my outlet for GAF lulz has been neutered, I thought I'd start an art thread.

I'm sure there are more than a few talented people posting/lurking on this board so I'll get this ball rolling with some recent stuff:

Please don't be shy about posting, all levels of talent are welcome!

AHMAZING!  :o

Really great stuff, dude. I think I might've seen your work before somewhere on the web.

I take it you're a commercial or concept artist?

I've posted my instagram before ...haven't really contributed much to it because I'm a lazy artist (or rather an overworked designer who has no motivation to draw at the end of the day).

I haven't drawn anything in over 8 years and I feel like a piece of shit over it. Was probably my one great passion in life and now all my desire for it is gone.

I know it can sound cliche, but it's honestly never too late to dust off that skill and get back into it. You should post something!!

I charge $500 to $1000 a day for freelance design work. So $100 is a bargain in comparison. :snob

And sure, it's a veiny dick but I'm not one to work for little to no money.

Artists and designers who underprice their work is a giant pet peeve of mine.

Nothing lol.

$75 is my baseline fee these days. Anything beneath that is not worth my time.  :doge

And I do get complaints from people that I'm too expensive but I work a full-time job (and then some) so I have to have a "high gate" for my freelance stuff or I'll just burn myself out and feel like I'm wasting my time.

And I'll even admit I'm probably too overpriced at my current skill level but hey, there's a lot of really talented people out there who are tragically underpricing their skills and their work.

Also, I like the excuse "oh, but art and design is fun. So naturally you'd be okay with working for free, right?"

For me art and design is tedious and sometimes very stressful. Especially when I'm trying to excute someone else's vision.

There's only been a few times where I've gotten a significant kick out of doing something and it was usually due to a giant burst of inspiration that came out of nowhere.

No lie, I’m with Dufus in that I’m a bit intimidated by the art by the others in this thread! I used to draw all the time when I was a kid, but I got out of practice as I got older. Oddly enough, I recently took up the pencil and paper again this month in an effort to fix that.

I’m trying to draw at least once a day in November. Hopefully I’ll have something I’ll be able to show in here before the end of the month!

I've been drawing every week but it's just shitty sketches for the most part.  Too embarrassed to post most of them because of how "low effort" they appear. :doge

Fucking design job just eats all my will power to draw well.

Post by: Himu on September 04, 2018, 02:55:45 PM
Don’t put pressure on sketching. Sketching is for your me time. Sketching isn’t about drawing well. It’s about exploring ideas and putting mediocre and bad ideas to paper so you have your good ideas for the real shit. Go to a coffee shop and just draw people doing their thing doing simple gestures. Make it an adventure, not a chore. Your skills will improve ten fold. Try to sketch every day. Doesn’t have to be anything elaborate. Just draw what’s around you.

Great work on the rendering.
I think an ear, as compositional element, would've worked good there, but i guess this way is even more grotesque. :thinking

I had an ear in there, but I liked the idea of him not having one because he doesn't fucking listen, only vomits tweets.

Thanks, but stufte also makes me want to hide under a table sometimes. Don't let it detract you from posting stuff, wish more people participated!

Yah, I named this thread because I have horrible anxiety about posting my art. I never used to, but I find that it helps me get over some of my mental hurdles around growing as an artist. Post stuff, even if you don't want to. We're all still learning. Forever.

Yeah, I worked as a professional artist during the early part of my career in game dev, and much of the work posted here intimidates me as well!

he looks too nice/normal to me, that is not a criticism of the quality of the art, just in the face he looks like alec baldwin or someone's grandma or something

I guess what I mean is, I could see this being his face in a children's cartoon show that he approves the look of

but maybe that drives home the point that awfulness isn't always as awful as we want to be able to imagine it, like your previous trump

Any advice for getting started drawing?

Started as in, absolutely no background?

There are a few interesting choices i'd say:

-if your pulse is not good yet: go for copying stuff. That way you're learning a way to acquire understanding of what you're seeing. You won't magically learn whatever you're seeing, but you'll be training your coordination between your eyes and your output, and you'll be getting the hang of using your hand as an artistic tool.

-if your coloring isn't good, don't fret. Make sure you first try to master lighting in grayscale (pencil could work). Color is probably the hardest part of drawing when it comes to a realistic approach. If you want to take that approach, i'd probably go digital since you can experiment a lot more without worrying.

---

I can tell you that observation plays a big part. When I was in primary school, I remember how my mom showed me some stuff she used to copy. These were professional drawings that my mom enjoyed copying (she never pursued that, but she was skilled at doing that specific branch of pencil drawing. So I started doing the same. I copied the drawing she copied a few times. One day, in arts subject (I think it was 4th or 5th grade), I did the same drawing without reference, just from the mind. Teacher thought I traced it lmao. Bottom line is: if you acquire a way to project that reality or imaginative creativity in your mind, you will surely get better results.

But the best start, imo, is to look at either professionals that do a style you'd like to learn or simply reality itself (through photos or still life) and get going, over and over and over.

If you make a cube and it isn't perfect, there's no need for do-overs, you can practice shading. Eventually all the pieces will fall into place.

Also, I heavily encourage not trying to get "outlines" of things you draw, but rather softly composing by sketching and softly shading. Eventually you'll build up the darker tones by repetition.

Thanks for the advice! Starting with grayscale sketches. :)

Sketching is unintuitive to me so I need to work on that.

Are there any instructors/lessons/tutorialists you could recommend as well? Maybe even books?

depends on what you want to draw but copy at first. get a sketchbook and draw everyday people in the DaVinci tradition. Learn how to speed sketch and think about lines and shape. When you get comfortable, consider switching to pen and use only pen when sketching. with the inability to erase, every mark is permanent and you will learn to execute lines with more thought out of necessity. finally, join figure drawing classes. You can figure draw at home but once covid is over start bringing some charcoal to figure classes and enjoy.

New Masters Academy is fantastic if you can afford it. Watch Glenn Vilppu.

If that is too expensive, sign up to Proko's lessons. They're set up so you buy them all and get to keep them and not a subscription service like NMA.

As for books always start with Loomis.

That lip sync feature. :ohhh

Getting back into Macromedia Flash (now Adobe Animate) for the first time in 15 years. I'm focusing on copying my favorite styles that I see right now in order to build up some muscle memory, as Daemon suggested. I'm hopeful that one of my Xmas gifts this year is Figure Drawing by Loomis as Cindi recommended. :)

I've always preferred hard cartoony styles over sketches so I've avoided the DaVinci style of hatching all my life (if I have the correct understanding of the technique.) But I don't have that mental hurdle anymore and I'm trying to be flexible to anything that can improve my skills.

Maybe in another 15 years I'll be good enough to post something in this thread. :P

That's fantastic!

You probably already know this, but it would pop even better agains a non pure-white background. If you're in ProCreate, that's really easy, as the base layer is just a color setting.
