Title: What did you finish? 2018 Edition
Post by: Joe Molotov on January 22, 2018, 10:38:26 AM
Post vidyas what you done beat this year.

Resident Evil 7

The game got significantly worse once you left the house area. The Testing Area and boss fight were great, but then the Boat was meh, the Mine was *temporary placeholder, insert content here*, the final boss was a QTE battle that they forgot to put any QTEs in. But the first 2/3rds were so good that I still think this was a great game overall. It was scary and cheesy in a way that tickled me as a horror movie fan, and I loved it. I'll check out the DLC at some point.

Just Cause 3

I really enjoyed it, but I didn't bother with the challenges. So with the basic gear and doing the area liberation, I was able to beat the game pretty easy. :doge I tried the multiplayer mod out, but it's really not ready for prime-time compared to Just Cause 2's.

Played through Timbleweed park, although only in filthy casual mode. Fun game with fantastic presentation if you're into old school pnc adventure games. Played it on switch and felt good to play as a touch game.

Edit:
1. Timbleweed park
2. Celeste
3. Mario Odyssey
4. Steamworld Dig 2
5. Golf Story

Whats casual mode? I love the idea of this game, like many point and clicks, but actually hate point and click gameplay

It's just an easy mode where puzzles are simplified a lot. The game also has a integrated hint system if you're stuck. However, it's not like a Tell Tale game where you just click through the story. You still can get stuck if you're missing an item or don't know what to do. If you just plain hate pnc gameplay, the casual mode probably won't do much for you.

I wouldnt say HATE, just hate being stuck on crazy ass puzzles that make no sense and just end up clicking everywhere with every item.

This has haunted me since the Indiana games on PC.

I beat What Remains of Edith Finch last weekend. It was really short and had no puzzles or gameplay to speak of, but it had some neat vignettes and it did make me grow a vagina.

I didn't want it to end and it ended even more quickly than the famiy map let on. I couldn't believe they teased going into the sunken house, I figured here was an Easter egg once chapters opened up. Or something...seems not.

After thinking about it isn't really needed, but eh.

Great game, Nintendo stepped it up. Now lets see if they can improve on it and make an all time classic, better story, sidequests and some real dungeons :)

Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City

Holy shit. This was awful. Ignoring the terrible shoe-horning of future-tech into 1998 and trying to fit it within the 3-day outbreak story-line, the gunplay is awful. The cover-system is awful. The trying to bait zombies to attack the special forces (which you will face NUMEROUS TIMES) is awful. I dunno why I tortured myself, but I finished it.

in january:

Hey Pikmin - I liked the demo, kinda made me miss stylus based games. Final game was kind of forgettable though. Good underground theme.

God of War - Really enjoyable, especially once you get to the big temple. Little story, mostly very good action adventuring with competent level design.

God of War 2 - Less coherent than the first game, dumb story bits become much more of a focus and the game design isn't as good. Still, I can't deny that some sessions I've played were several hours long.

Binary Domain - replay. Underrated, especially because of the bosses, but I didn't enjoy it quite as much as on my first playthrough.

Starfox - I played this for the first time on the SNES Mini and was surprised at how enjoyable it is, especially since I don't think of the series highly. I already did several playthroughs by now.

Starfox 64 3D - The free roaming gimmick is as tedious as I remember it being. I prefer the first game.

South Park Fractured Butthole

It was ok I guess but it overstayed its welcome a bit as I was pretty done with after around 15 hours in (final clock was 19ish). While they nailed the look and the fighting system wasn't terrible, the pacing seemed off and maybe the theme of the game didn't really hit home for me. It just seemed like a really long filler episode and not sure if I would really recommend.

Yakuza 0-Took a while, but the story got good. Majima is really fun to play.

Yakuza Kiwami-Good, but felt like it was padded with filler and the story is missing the character moments that will define the later games.

Tales of Beseria-Good cast and story, but the the Tales level of presentation and design is getting very old.

Horizon: Zero Dawn - Finished the story last night.  Story was pretty well put together, but nowhere near the mind fuckery as Nier:Automata's.  It's funny how similar, but yet so different, HZD, BotW and Nier:A all are.  All 3 wonderful ass ARPG's though.  2017 spit dat hot fiya.

Doesn't this mode also cut out some story and puzzles completely?
Title: Re: What did you finish? 2018 Edition
Post by: Fifstar on February 13, 2018, 08:51:30 AM
Yeah, it does. I don't think story is cut but the pacing really feels of in casual mode. There are lots of items that don't get used or puzzles where you think "was it really supposed to be so easy to get that item?". Also the second half of the game moves way too fast.

Still if you're mainly playing for story and the content it's okay. It actually helps me enjoying the normal mode, which I am currently playing. Because you always know what your goals are - it's just that they are more difficult to reach now. Which is cool, because now I'm thinking about solving puzzles instead of trying to figure out what the actual problem is. Way too many pnc adventures suffer from the problem that the player doesn't know what the goal or sub-goal is.

Finished Assassins Creed Origins a few days ago. I was kidding myself in the beginning with thinking the writing got better because it sure as hell ain't an improvement from the former games. Main plot ist the same fractured shit like before, like they cut out half of it and glued it together in a half-assed way. And the side quests are mostly boring ass busy work that end with you raiding an enemy fort and killing all the people there. It's disappointing since Hellenism, with the fall of the Roman Republic as its end point, is my favorite historic period. But whatever, it's my fault for getting my hopes up I guess.

What the game does well is the fun gameplay and especially the gorgeous open world. It's so fucking pretty, sometimes I was just standing around and stared into the distance. The last game that did that to me was Horizon Zero Dawn, but I think Origins looks even better. They really really nailed Ancient Egypt here. It all really engaged me in exploring the map. Otherwise I don't think I would have finished it what with all the boring and samey quests. Atmospheric open worlds go a long way in keeping me engaged I suppose. Kinda like Bethesda games: Never finished one Elder Scrolls but the Fallout games I did, subpar writing notwithstanding. I just dig the weird and unique world in Fallout...

I like how some shit goes down, and you need to return to your SECRET BASE that you suddenly just have and talk with your squad that you also suddenly just have. :lol

And then there's the parts where you're suddenly slammed back into 2017 and some lady is like "Fuck Abstergo, I'm gonna build my own Animus Project with hookers and blackjack, here read 5000 pages of backstory to get caught up on what I'm doing" lol fuck that. Present Day AssCrud is wack af.
Title: Re: What did you finish? 2018 Edition
Post by: desert punk on February 13, 2018, 11:27:44 AM
The overall confusion is even worse in Origins, partly I think because they decided to ditch the codex/encyclopedia this time. In the past games you were at least able to read up on some things regarding the plot, if you cared.

Lol yeah, I had no clue what the fuck was going on with that present day shit as well. Doubt it's even relevant in the long run. I bet we'll never see that Abstergo lady again in person. Not sure why Ubi persists with that plot line even though everyone is telling them to just cut it.

Tho I admit I liked the present day stuff in the first three games or so. Was a nice distraction from the main game. Then it suddenly became shit, either starting with the one based in Constantinople or Ass Creed 3, not sure which.

Axiom Verge

First off, this game was made by one guy, wow. Graphics are cool, music is kick ass. I was never huge into metroidvania games and Steamworld Dig is the only one I ever finished but the whole aesthetic of Axiom grabbed me and I needed to play it (Much like game covers made you rent games in the 90s).

Game itself is good, towards the end there is a bit of backtracking and no teleport makes it a bit of a pain. But I think if you played this type of game before its not too bad. I used a guide when I got stuck.

Final area is hard, like a proper difficulty spike and I had to cheese the final boss too.

Overall good stuff!

A two hour point and click (with some light “action”) nice visuals and music, weird and dark humour.

Nice way to spend two hours if you can get it cheap.

Just beat Shadowrun: Dragonfall Director's Cut and really enjoyed it. The original Shadowrun Returns was fine but kinda bland- these wrpg revivals are big on story and if it isn't engaging then the game is just kinda there.

february:

Tales of Eternia - I took a month or so break because the overly long final boss has a 1 hit KO QTE, which killed my motivation after my first try... Other than that, it was fun. There's an amazing art direction/2D graphics and the sprites save even the otherwise dumb character designs. I liked how fast paced it was, I finished the game in 25 hours... even though I only found out you can dash after I was almost done with the game.  :doge  2D battles don't feel that different from 3D Tales though.

Burnout Legends - This maybe is my favorite game after Dracula X Chronicles on my LTTP PSP so far. I only ever watched people play Burnout 3 and finally got my hands on the gameplay. Still awesome, although the PSP screen makes it hard on a few maps to make out what's in the distance. And crash mode is kind of dumb because you need to go through 1 minute of menus, saving and loading between 15 second long actual missions.

For some reason it has only like 2 songs though.

Monster Hunter World - Easily the best playing Monster Hunter, amazing audiovisuals on top of it. I don't mind the lack of G-content, instead I'm glad they toned the series down again. It went off the rails with idol dance numbers and whatnot before this game.

Beat Bloodborne yesterday. Fantastic game. Easily at or near the top of the Souls/Blood franchise, with lots of great, memorable locations and some pretty cool bosses. Bring on the sequel. Or DS4. Whatever, I'll take either. Or something entirely new.

Grim Dawn

I finished the game using two skills only  :lol But I guess thats part of the charm of an old school system where you can try things out.

Liked the Lovecraftian angle, good soundtrack, nice gameplay. Got a bit samey maybe due to my playstyle but nice fun and more of a challenge then Diablo although I didnt die that much.

Will buy the expansion when its on sale.

Destiny 2

What to say, it's a bit like Destiny 1 really. Great visuals and vistas, very satisfying gunplay. The inclusion of a story is a plus, but it's still very boring and doesn't have the scale of what Destiny was supposed to be like.

The single player campaign has some nice moments and decent fights but overall there isn't a single level that feels really well crafted and challenging on normal. Maybe because in my head I compare this to my first Halo playthrough still. But the core is very good so you keep playing. The gear upgrades all feel stupid btw, in Diablo at least you can FEEL if you get some good gear and start just smashing things, here its more subtle.

I will dig a bit into the the MP side of things and see if that improves the game a bit.

Fun lil shmup which is not really my genre, made by Polish devs for mobile its root show a bit but its still good fun. Later stages really make it necessary to grind for upgrades a bit.

Finished Observer over the weekend.  Certainly a very moody and atmospheric Cyberpunk walking simulator.  Got alot of Snatcher vibes, but with a whole horror twist thrown in.   Some parts/puzzles were a bit convoluted and could've been thought out a little better, but overall story, music and voice acting (Rutger Hauer's the main character, brehs!) was pretty good.  I made sure to make a backup save in order to get both endings.

It was obvious that either the boy and/or his dad were the ones spying on them because they were the only other plotline in the game, other than random missing teenagers. I wish they had just gone full illuminati instead of it just being a crazy hobo jerking off to your phone sex, and then revealing everything during info dump right before the game ends. Wow, such indie, much subversion.

The 25th Ward: The Silver Case - Visual novel by Grasshopper with great music and art, plus some intriguing story bits (but out of the 3 main stories it provides, I didn't like one in particular). A few puzzles are fun, but mostly it's just typing in numbers and passwords. This originally came out on cellphones in 2005, so that's probably why it's designed that way. It still plays better than Silver Case 1.

Monster Hunter World

The game is very rich and the SP game is alright, pretty addictive stuff but also a bit grindy. Maybe it was my weapon choice (LBG) but I felt there wasnt many options for me to fight except strafe, shoot, plant mines.

Final Fantasy 12: International: Zodiac Job System, well the "remaster" of it anyway. :doge

Still great, ten years later. Trial mode wasn't as impressive as I thought it'd be, though. Bunch of rehashed enemies (and some new ones) while having to buy items/equipment in the main game if you want to complete it with less struggling.

April:
Ratchet & Clank PS4 - I was surprised that I didn't hate this series' Dreamworks-esque make-up. I actually chuckled at points. The environments look great, but the characters are simply hideous. The gameplay is fun, though the main problem is that every weapon is lame in one way or the other. It's cool to combine them for havoc, but none of them are that fun on their own...

Ni No Kuni 2 - Forgettable story, but the gameplay and presentation made it addictive anyway. Side content feels meaningful, because it is all connected by the kingdom.

God Of War PS4 - Very good combat, good difficulty, okay exploration and puzzle solving, very good presentation/world making, annoying story and handholding in the beginning. The kid is shit.

Tomb Raider: Underworld - I've had this one sitting for like 3-4 years after finishing Legend and Anniversary back to back. :doge I don't like it's conclusion of the "trilogy" and really, given that Anniversary was basically a 1:1 of the original Tomb Raider, bringing back the big bad for another diabolical plot was dumb.

Beat Golf Story. A game like comfort food, pleasing to play but when you play it too much you get bored. I took a couple of pauses where I played other games, going get it was fun again.
The game is a bit easy. If you lose a challenge it gets boring because the opponent's always play exactly the same.
Game controls well and the writing is charming if a bit samey.

Underworld was actually the last TR I played, and I really dug it. A nice bridge between the clunkiness of the originals and the overly Uncharted-looking reboots.

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light - Took 5 hours to blow through, but was a pretty fun arcade take on the Tomb Raider gun-play. Don't really have much to say in regards to this, because... yeah... it's a short title that was OBVIOUSLY built for co-op, but the game is long dead for that so... :doge

Rage - People weren't kidding about the last half sucking. :lol A lot of the quests pretty much sucked. And the main story's "big villain" isn't even there for like 80% of the game. Then there's no final-boss, just hoard-mode style of a last battle to activate... Arks... for Rage 2 to possibly hook into.

As the last Carmack iD title: It's massively disappointing for me. But engine wise? The mega-textures idea was interesting. That's about it.

Hopefully Rage 2 improves the car shit, because with how often you're in the cars, that's weak IMO. But iD is a shooter company first, so their crack at it sucking is to be expected.

So far, it's been a slow year. But both Xenoblade 2 (~130h) and Trails of Cold Steel (~100h) were super long.

Xenoblade 2
Metroid: Samus Returns

Add Max Payne 2 to the list. Wow, nearly everything is improved upon in the sequel, the tech especially feels like a huge leap forward and the games are only two years apart.

Short but sweet, doesn't overstay its welcome. Presentation is much better than the first, you can tell they're no longer using coworkers as in-game models or as stand ins for the comics.

First game felt a little goofy, partly b/c of that and certainly feels more dated overall, but I liked how the sequel still maintains a similar sense of humor.

Appreciated how easy it was jumping into b/c it plays and controls so similarly to the first. Looks great and works well with a widescreen patch.

May:
Ape Escape 2 - I liked its audiovisuals and mission structure, capturing apes feels gut. But the controls are wonky, mostly because of completely unintuitive button placement, not being able to change the inverted camera, etc.

Donkey Kong Country - replayed, thankfully I found the shortcut in the snow barrel stage in this playthrough.

Super Mario World - replayed. I like how every playthrough can be different because of its secrets, even though I still went for everything in the end.

Pacman 256 - I unlocked everything, so I guess that counts as finished. It's a fun iteration of Pacman, which is about going forward in an endless maze and upgrading powerups.

Those games rely on multiple play-throughs to stretch the content, Diablo-style. I believe the gear continues to scale and I don't think you can even get some of the best abilities for your characters with a single playthrough. Not that it changes much about how you play.

OK. Finished TwinBee RPG. Took me under 9 hours to complete (little over 6 hours to reach the final chapter). I think this is the shortest turn-based RPG I've played. Don't know why Konami even bothered.

+ Battles happen on field like CT/BoF III, zero transitions. Enemies wander around on field, too (not much of a plus point for me personally).
+ Battles are somewhat quick (not Suikoden quick, mind). You can also use auto attacks to help speed battles up.
+ Tamawari is the composer*.
+ Clouds (when you see can them) move. Rad.
+ You can use a blender to make items on the fly (using fruits you earn in battle).

The battle system is really basic. It has an ATB like system (real time but pauses when using the menu to use items/actions). You can combine attacks. You know the rest. Not terrible, just your standard fair.

Each character has one field action, think tools in Wild ARMs. Except they're used for really unoriginal shit like using Twinbee's hammer to hit a switch zzzZZZ.

You can plant and grow stuff too but I never really care to try.

- Unsurprisingly, the game is easy. Maybe a little too easy. The game was made for younger players in mind obviously, but still. Guardian's Crusade did it better.
- The camera, it's... it just sucks.
- Graphics don't really bother me but I must say the featureless monsters in the game are pretty lame.
- *Lackluster soundtrack. This is what disappointed me the most. I gave the OST a listen long before I played the game but it didn't do much for me. I went in hoping the music would click context-wise but nope, it did not. The shmups had great music. Shame.
- Nothing much to do outside of the main storyline.

One nagging thing that stood out was this decrepit house near the beach. The house has its own unique music that plays nowhere else. And guess what? Nothing happens in there. Empty rooms except for the one that contained an item. The room on the second floor is fit for a boss fight. I'm pretty sure it's where you were meant to fight the boss of the area but for some reason the developers made you fight it on the beach. Rushed content maybe.

In the end the game is slightly below average. Unremarkable but not abysmal.

That's a really awesome writeup! I watched my friend play a bit of Twinbee RPG, and it looked... quaint. Definitely a bit more for the kids, and unfortunately lacking the amazing visuals and music the core Twinbee series is known for. If it's short and can be played through without too much Japanese knowledge, maybe I'll give it a run.

Interested in hearing your opinions about Elder Gate, and any other obscure Japan-only RPG.

You should be able to go through the whole game without any issue, it's fairly linear. I'd say give it a go if you're curious. 12 hours max if you feel the need to level grind or something.  You may even like it, there are some out there who do!

Interested in hearing your opinions about Elder Gate, and any other obscure Japan-only RPG.

As for Elder Gate: I was left feeling quite conflicted, that's why I'm slow to write something up about it. It's like, on one hand, I accept it's not a great game (art makes the game seem more interesting than it really is) but on the other, I spent 90 hours playing it and not once did I get sick of it. Note: it's around 30-35 hours long. I'll have something up at some point.

In the meantime, here's some artwork from the game I uploaded. Quality isn't great but you won't find them anywhere else (warning: contains two images of the final boss). https://imgur.com/a/zcBLeJD Taguchi's art was wasted on this game. :(

I wanted to post here about other RPGs I played, like Khamrai and Ecsaform in 2014, but since I'm not really much of a forum poster, I ended up not doing so. I don't play often either but I have a deep love for 32bit era games.

All I'll say about Khamrai is... it was one of the most infuriating RPGs I've ever played. I had to force myself to finish it. On the surface it looks like a pretty cool RPG, but trust me, it isn't. And the music, man, it has a handful of okay tracks but of rest of it is extremely poor. World map track in particular. Jesus. (I don't think the game was developed by Namco themselves)

Ecsaform... wasted potential. Cool art and setting, supposedly plays a little bit like Energy Breaker (can't confirm, never played EB but should have). It ended up being really dull and braindead. Short, too (I clocked around 12 hours+).

I played Lucienne's Quest in Feb last year (surprised to see you play it not long ago). And Grand Chef after it (lol). But don't play that, it's barely an RPG. I was drawn in by the music but it wasn't worth it in the end. As you can tell by now, I have a bad habit of playing really average/bad RPGs.

I got the Lara Croft and... series to do next before starting the Re-Reboot series. :doge

Underworld was actually the last TR I played, and I really dug it. A nice bridge between the clunkiness of the originals and the overly Uncharted-looking reboots.

Yeah, TR: Legend was pretty great too.

Unraveled 2.  A good game for the price and the additional Yarny makes for some interesting puzzles (on the bonus levels) but most regular puzzles are far too easy and repetitive. The bonus content is basically a few harder puzzles mixed in with some brutal super meat boy type platforming and swing puzzles.  Introducing a new mechanic on the final level was a terrible idea on a final level that was pretty terrible to begin with.

As good as the original due to the bonus content.  The two Yarny's do have a story of helping a couple kids running away from something bad.  Less feels than the original and the novelty wore off a bit of the yarn hopping around in these beautiful areas. I played it single player with few issues, as switching between the two worked well. Coop seems like it would be fun but also frustrating if you are playing with someone that is a novice to platforming.

If you liked the first, it is a no-brainer purchase.

It took me about 60 in-game hours to finish and I took my time doing quests.

If you want 100% you will be grinding/farming quite a bit afterward since you have to max out your kingdom, do skirmishes, hunt for items, etc to do all the side quests.

The game is quite easy by default, but one of the updates introduced harder difficulties if you choose to do so. I prefer the first game (NNK2 has absolutely nothing to do with NNK1 aside from a segment that references the first game)

June:

Super Mario RPG - Well paced, written and the gameplay is more fun than several of the more modern Mario RPGs. It's got a really bad art direction though, and I'm usually fond of prerendered graphics.

Demon's Crest - I think this has some of the best SNES spritework I've seen. It's also a fun enough action platformer, but I don't like the IGA-esque progression - i.e. lock away the real ending and a bunch of levels with no indication of such during the fake credits.

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Moon - Competent Castlevania clone, there's not much else to say. It's exactly what it looks like.

Lara Croft GO - Very good puzzle design with a competent difficulty curve and natural introduction of new mechanics. Also, the atmosphere is pretty cool for a puzzle game and I'm glad I didn't play it on a phone, on which I probably wouldn't have played with sound.

Zelda: A Link Between Worlds - Replayed, this was not as good as I remember. The graphics are as hideous as I remember though and the main gimmicks (lending items and wall walking) are throwaway in hindsight. What stands out are the good dungeons and music, but the pacing and exploration is somehow so much better in ALttP (of which I usually wasn't too fond of in the past, until I've also replayed that one).

I'm really hoping they up-port ALBW or something to Switch cause I know that if they don't I'll reluctantly grab the 3DS version.

But I'm waiting until they announce the 3DS eShop shutting down before I do. As the Bore's biggest ALttP stan I feel obligated.

I guess I'll switch to Shadowrun (SNES) now.

Have you played any of the Shadowrun games, Borys? The first [Returns] is just okay, but Dragonfall and Hong Kong are really good.

Dragonfall is amazing. What a great RPG. I really like that it tells a good story and isn’t particularly long. 20-30 hours tops. I haven’t played Hong Kong yet.

I beat The Sexy Brutale on Switch and it’s a good adventure game.

It’s not particularly challenging, and can probably be best unaided in 5 or 6 hours at most. The story is fairly interesting but not nearly as heart wrenching and amazing as twitter fans of the game will make you think. The mystery is pretty interesting up until the reveal.

I also beat it on Switch and think the complaints about the performance are really exaggerated. Either it was worse at launch, people are being silly about it, or both. The performance is not great, and there are like 5-10 rooms where the frame rate is clearly off. It seems to be when there are lots of translucency, reflective surfaces, and special lighting effects. It’s not really a twitch game and each room is typically in a fixed perspective, so it seldom matters. The only way I could tell in some seasons was the walking animation of the main character would kind of lurch a bit as it skipped frames, but it never really impacted the game much.

Finished Lego City Undercover (PS4) while home over the weekend. "Finished" — heh. I will probably go back now and then and clean up challenges. There's a school of thought which claims one is not "finished" with a Lego game until it's been hundred-percented, but I've got 98 of 450 Gold Bricks and played a whole bunch. Also, driving physics are kind of the assiest ass of any ass in an open-world game, so I will probably never do the race challenges.

[PROTOTYPE 2] will be here shortly. Game was a mere slip on the original. Fun enough, but dumbed down and simplified.

Far Cry 5: Duck Dynasty goes to Mars DLC.  A not so solid 4/10. 10 hours to finish, maybe a bit more if you search out all the notes.

If you do not like Hurk, just avoid it. I like the crass humor so it suited me fine and was one of the few enjoyable parts of the game. You play as Jase Robinson from Duck Dynasty Nick Rye, the guy with the plane who spends most of the game throwing out sarcastic quips and whining at everything Larry the Cable Guy Hurk says.  Story, it is there, the almost ending twist is predictable, the final ending twist was pretty good. A decapitated Hurk beams you up to Mars to help him and his "AI love" to save the world. His decapitated robot head "Brobot" joins you throughout, minus a couple areas but is always there to tell a joke and shoot an insect or two. Like all "Guns for hire" he will need to be revived during battle to keep fighting but as he is the only "Gun for hire" will always recover after a fight and you will not be able to rid yourself of him.

Towers (x)  They are back and purely based on the jetpack/gravity belt. All are easy and little effort was made by the developers here. I like towers myself but this was half-assed.
Space Guns (x)  Expect to press the button that allows you to swap between weapons a lot due to the limitations of how long the charge is (think PS4 controller efficiency). Basic fare here where they substitute bullets for a laser, with a times charge down and recharge delay. Power Gloves for the melee players.
Enemies (x) Insects, Crab things, Flying bird things with a couple harder variation of these things and 15 boss spiders. probably the second best part of the game as when you get more than one at a time it can be challenging as they can poison you and take away all your weapon charge or ability to use the jet pack for a short period of time. Spamming them with grenades and they pose less of a challenge. Hurk also has a different song/story for each battle. You are given two new tools to help with the fight, invincibility cloak and cock block which prevents damage for a small period of time.
Hallucinogenic levels (x)  Got like 5 or 6 of those bad boys. Each a little different and not as wacky as previous titles but all tie into the base game.
Tremors based world (x)  There are rocky areas, bases/towers and soft sand. Stand in the soft sand and the insects will pop out. They are also just hanging around places you need to go, so avoiding the sand will still require numerous insects to be killed.
Side quests (x) Reading Notes and searching from Hurks body parts.
Clutch Nixon (x) Six of them. Tried two, beat one, hate them just as I did in the main game. It is the body suit through rings of starting over and over and talking too long to get to the start over.

The really shitty parts are the best guns are end game items that get little use as you are trying to wrap it all up, since there is little to do after beating all the areas. They give you a gravity belt and jet packs then shove the latter up your ass for about 1/8th of the map as there is interference and you can not use them.  Forcing you to the ground and forced to change the tactics you will use the rest of the game. It could have been a good idea but it was just a hindrance moving around that part of the map. They give you a better charge/recharge for the weapons near the end which I would have loved to have at the beginning (Think Switch Pro controller efficiency). You spend most of your time fighting from the air and the novelty wears off pretty quickly, just as it did on the last Borderlands game. It's almost essential to fight in the air for most of the game to avoid the melee attacks. In the air you can dodge projectiles and avoid the melee so it is kinda necessary. Even with only the gravity belt and no jetpack you have enough height to maneuver in the air around enemies. Ground bad, air good. Fortunately you do not have to worry about collecting oxygen.

Wrote more than the DLC deserved. They better knock it out of the park with the zombie DLC as the first two have been duds.

15) Fallout 4

Great game, shit story.

16) Deus Ex 2

I liked it more than Deus Ex 4.

*ducks*

How the fuck do you beat so many games?

Deus Ex 2 was 12 hours long... 4 hours on the same day I've finished Fallout 4 and 8 hours on the next day... but anyway very good question!

Answer: at the cost of my own life. I am rushing to reach 200 games, though.

That being said:

17) Breath of Fire 2 (SNES)

Now onto my 200th RPG!

Is your polish bae real traditional? I used to play a lot more games when i had an older girlfriend that worked from home and did all the washing and cooking lmao. Now i work full time and my partner works full time (software engineer x lawyer), we have more money, go out and travel more (use to be poor and a homebody) and put simply - i don't have time for this shit  :'(

Yeah, that was my line of thinking. I don't even work/travel a lot, but between my normal job and having a baby girl, I'm lucky if I get 5-10 solid hours a week.

I could barely play that much if I was was single and and jobless...

[PROTOTYPE 2] is now 1000/1000, and the 44th completed game in my library.

IIRC I am not credited for games which I completed but later released DLC which I didn't buy. That bothers me. PSN Trophies, probably the ONLY thing I like about them is that they have separate categories for Platinum, so the core came has a completion, and each DLC has its own as well. So I've finished the shit out of GTA V, but didn't continue to play GTA Online as it updated, so my 1000/1000 completion is not listed.

July:

Way of the Samurai 3 - Good music and illusion of freedom make this a cool samurai sandbox, but after a few endings and jank I had my fill.

Captain Toad 3DS - Cool collection of different pseudo-platforming stages based on Mario ideas and I guess perspective puzzles. The latter made it feel like something Nintendo would have done during the N64 era to highlight new 3D camera features. I guess that makes sense, considering the game comes from an era in which Nintendo tried their best to destroy their own 3D innovations from back in the day and claim people didn't understand 3D gaming until Spatoon  :doge

Sonic Mania - A perfect imagination of what a real/good Sonic game on Saturn would have been. Great. (So the marketing with the Genesis/Megadrive back cover is actually kinda dumb, not that it matters - the packaging is great too)

TORCHLIGHT - it was cute, I like its visuals, felt the story was bland, and playing on Normal was repetitious. In the end, it overstayed its welcome. I got 11 of 12 Achievements, because I can't face grinding for maximum Fame, when I did a ton of side missions but am only at fame level 20 of 33 after finishing the main quest. No, thanks.

It was FUN, now I'm DONE.

Prey

Pretty pretty good.
Did every side quest and went for the "good" ending.
Not totally in love with the ending, but it's interesting at least.

+Dug the setting, the freedom in speccing and problem solving, the immersion and world building, inventory management with recyclers and fabricators.
+Mick Gordon
-The first few hours are the most unsettling before you learn enemy patterns and upgrade a bit.
It loses its edge when I'm running up and diddy bopping fools with a wrench. While the gameplay gets better and opens up, I'm no longer fearful and there's no longer an element of the unknown.
-Even on PC, while traveling the station clearing out the side quests I lost some enthusiasm due to the frequent loading points whenever moving inbetween areas.
-What was the point of the Nightmare? Dude was kind of goofy looking tip toeing around.

Megaman Powered Up - Made Megaman 1 playable, though the controls for running are a little fucked up. You get used it to it though.

Final Fantasy XII Zodiac Age - Really enjoyed the world building and micro management, although I don't know whether I would've liked the og release without 2x speed and quicksaves.

Shenmue - Some of the pacing could have been better, but the atmosphere makes up for it. Moments like training your kungfu in the park between snow and neon lights while the sun sets and the lowkey OST plays, feel like nothing else.

Yakuza Kiwami 2 - The new engine is great, though I don't like how they increasingly want to hold your hand for sidequests instead of just letting you explore.

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Wildlands - Let me save anyone that is interested in the story alone some time: The CIA agent murders the big-bad for revenge and goes to jail over it. :doge

I dunno why Ubisoft locks the big bad behind 4 "locks" (of which you only need 2) of the heads of his department, but the story isn't worth the slog. The sandbox and gunplay, meanwhile are alright for an Ubisoft title and if you have friends to co-op with, it can be good fun to flank around a base and take it out from all directions. :doge

Oh wait:

Wikipedia and spoilered in case someone REALLY cares that badly:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
How the story ends depends on whether the Ghosts fully dismantled the cartel. If remnants of the cartel remain, Bowman will execute El Sueño, leading to her dismissal from the CIA and be arrested for murdering El Sueño, although she has no regrets of doing so, placing the lives of the Bolivians and her best friend Ricky above the lucrative cocaine trade. If the Ghosts have fully dismantled the Cartel having taken down others involved with Santa Blanca, Bowman takes El Sueño into protective custody. El Sueño provides further intel on other drug cartels, terrorist groups, and arms smugglers while in custody. Bowman predicts that when the intelligence has run out, El Sueño will either be extradited by Mexico or cut loose and start a new drug cartel, starting the cycle over again, for which she and the Ghosts will again prepare themselves.

Metal Gear Solid - Good game, although the story was obviously overhyped by kiddos back in the day. But the gameplay and atmosphere were still good. Nevertheless, it's refreshing to play a PS1 game with such a high quality voice work. I waited quite a while to get this game, because most versions over here force a horrid German dub on to the player.

Spyro 2 - Good platformer, like Banjo-lite. The level design is much more involving than the rather shallow first game. The camera is a little finnicky, but certainly managable compared to other games of that era.

Rayman Legends - Replayed this game for like the third time because of PS+. GOAT platformer controls, awesome quick pace, actual inventive worlds on top of its mechanics, doing a good online mode, fixed some annoyances of Origins, i.e. best platforming sequel of last/current generation.

Biohazard 7: Resident Evil/Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, Not a Hero, End of Zoe included. - I pretty much enjoyed these more than I thought I would. I dunno if I need another first person horror game out of the series, but this shows Capcom can still do "atmosphere" horror when they give a damn.

The Banned Footage content isn't worth shit and should've been included in the base game a la Not a Hero since it's a mini-game collection. Bleh.

Probably will revisit to speed-run/unlock things later on.

Shenmue 1-2 HD - Already posted in the Shenmue thread, but whatever.

Let It Die - I haven't played Suda's other titles, but... uh... yeah... the ending leaves a lot to be desired, and the gameplay gets hugely pay-to-win after like floor 20. In my opinion, it does the Souls gameplay badly because of that. Otherwise the foundation (the idea behind it) is relatively solid. Such a shame they have to hunt for whales to where they fucked over the entire gameplay loop.

Megaman 11 - I think this is the hardest MM game that I've played, but the difficulty feels more natural. I like the level design, a shame about the awful New Mario Bros.-esque audiovisuals.

Shadow of the Colossus remake - The camera is still a little shit sometimes, but they've improved the controls just enough for me to finally feel the hype for this game thoroughly.

Bloodborne - My first (active) Platinum, chalice dungeons aren't great, but okay enough in coop. The execution ending was my final trophy.

It actually worked better for me than Souls, because real money was on the line, lol. The first boss freaked me out slightly, because I was overall anxious since I already started to run out off free revivals. They didn't last until the second area boss and then I stopped, but that was still a decent enough ~15 hours.

I am counting Witcher 3 as beaten-ish.

Main game was very uneven, although really liked loved it when it was clicking. Didn't really care for the last and actual main stretch, and glad I read a no spoiler cheat sheet on 'best ending.' I would probably do another playthrough to do things a bit differently, and not just regarding Ciri.

I went on and did the Hearts of Stone DLC and it was aces. Great pacing and only thing that annoyed was the last little maze section.

Just stepped foot in Toussaint for Blood and Wine expansion, and it looks interesting...also feels like a good stopping point for a bit.

I have RDR2 and DQ XI lined up but will probably play a few shorter/non-RPG games for a bit.

I put this down when I got everyone to lv 99 about a month ago- for whatever reason that was my main drive I guess. Finally picked it back up tonight to beat it, the last boss fight only took me about 3-4 turns because I cheesed it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ (Unlike Borys, I will learn all of the abilities, thank you very much)

Great game, it's better than a 9 but not quite a 9.5 if that makes any sense. 9.25 boners out of 10, because nothing has any meaning and everything is arbitrary.

Back in 1995 - I'm so glad I bought this on Steam sale. I don't know if I'd recommend this on full-price since the game pulls a "gotcha!" on you in regards to the ending, and I had the "true ending" glitch out like 2-3 times to where I said "fuck it" and watched it on Youtube.  :doge

Unity Jank™ aside, it's an alright throw-back to the 1990 era tank-controls and adventure games a la Alone in the Dark. But man, that story kinda left a sour taste in my mouth.

Quickly finishing Dead Rising 4 - Over all it's kinda meh.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbUHdXkWlxU

This is about the only good thing to come from it. And it sets up for a really shitty ending of killing Frank off only to THEN release a DLC going "PSYCHE! OVERTIME MODE THROWBACK!"  when most folks couldn't have given a damn after they botched the base game (no timer? WTF. You can literally spend hours just leveling up, I got up to level 69 [#Nice] of like 100 max with doing all the cases and just repeating a checkpoint at one point for 1-3 of the 13 hours it took me).

That said, I think I like it a little more than Dead Rising 3, if only by the virtue of 1) sneaking up on enemies and selfie'ing them before the take down is hilarious (got one of the cultists from the first game: https://i.imgur.com/Oh94Cpx.jpg ) and had me laughing whenever I did. And 2) You can use the vehicles and get up to speed while dodging the other vehicles strewn about pretty well. Whereas in Dead Rising 3 with it being urban/LA-cloned it was way more compact and harder to actually USE the vehicles when you wanted to just sit there and smash zombies for hours.

Though, I think I prefer Dead Rising 1 and 2: Off the Record in regards to Frank games over 2, 3, and 4 as far as the series is concerned.

I dunno if I'll get the DLC ending, especially while it's on sale. Steam reviews have it in the negatives, and I'm not really jonesing for more of Nu-Frank.

December:
Professor Layton Last Specter - I liked that the puzzle solving felt a bit more natural than prior titles. Though some main problems remain. i.e. There's arbitrary difficulty spikes and it's annoying when a puzzle is only hard, because its long ass explanation isn't clear (especially math things). On the other hand, the atmosphere is still ace. There's also an Animal Crossing clone in this, which is kind of interesting for an hour or two.

Tetris DS - I guess I "finished" it, because I got to the credits. I was never a fan of these types of puzzle games, but several QOL features at least made Tetris somewhat fun for me for the first time. Meanwhile, I can't for the life of me comprehend things like Puyo or Dr. Mario even with several hours of practice.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker for the Switch.  It's pretty good for someone like me who doesn't have a lot of time to game and just has time for a couple levels here and there a night.  Like most Wii U Mario games of the time, the main game is simple and brain dead easy for babby gamers, something which I think is ridiculous considering how I was able to beat the original SMB when I was 5.  Anyway, you then find three crystals, a stage challenge, and a pixel toad if you are seven years old and want a challenge.  Captain Toad though has very interesting level designs and the bonus book can have some frustrating challenges.  Game clock tells me that I've played 15 hours or more of this game.  I'm not sure that I recommend it at $40 but you're able to get a copy of it for $20-30 one of these days, it's not the worst thing you can buy.

Valkyria Chronicles 4.

Really enjoyed it. I don't think it's as good as the first one, but still a real fun game.

My problems are the story gets a bit too anime over the top. In the first the characters felt removed from the main conflict, they were just soldiers experiencing the conflict. While there was some anime super powers stuff, it still did'nt feel as JRPGish as the 4th. The character's were ok and the theme of war twisting your motivations was solid. Still it felt a little ridiculous and not as "grounded" as the first one. Also the presentation allowed for more story and content, but also longer story sequences and a cheaper feeling. Since everything was cutscenes basically in the first one the pacing was a bit better and story moments more to the point.

Still lots of good content and an amazingly mechanical game.

Finished Far Cry 5 over the last couple of days.

The game has some really solid foundations, when it comes to gameplay, as you can do a lot of acrobatics and manouvers, in very intuitive ways (not to the levels of a Titanfall 2, but still good).
Everything around that though is kind of bland to shit, which is a shame.

The story is insufferable (thank god for the skip button) and the gameplay loop is broken by the constant interruptions (be it story ones, or just plain enemy spawner gone wild).

You'll be scouting an enmy outpost trying to make it stealth (by far the most fun you can have with the game) and here comes an (unrelated) enemy partol, then an enemy plane just happens to fly by, then a bear, then a cougar, then another fucking partol.. all in the span of 2 minutes; it's annoying as shit.

Another problem is that these outposts last too little: You take out the alarms (usually 2 or 3, tops) and then you get to kill 5 or 6 guys and you're done; back to traveling from A to B.
It's just an out of balance gameplay loop, where you get to have 5 minutes of fun every 30 of annoyance.

And don't get me started on those AI companions, the animales can't even get on the passenger seat, and you run them over constantly, as a result.
At least in coop is a bit better, but even then, your buddy can't retain the mission progress for themselves.

It's just a mess, a mess with potentially great gameplay at its core.

I'll try to remember to play some games this year, instead of just mobage trash and watching LPs on Youtube.

january:

1 Hey Pikmin - I liked the demo, kinda made me miss stylus based games. Final game was kind of forgettable though. Good underground theme.
2 God of War - Really enjoyable, especially once you get to the big temple. Little story, mostly very good action adventuring with competent level design.
3 God of War 2 - Less coherent than the first game, dumb story bits become much more of a focus and the game design isn't as good. Still, I can't deny that some sessions I've played were several hours long.
4 Binary Domain - replay. Underrated, especially because of the bosses, but I didn't enjoy it quite as much as on my first playthrough.
5 Starfox - I played this for the first time on the SNES Mini and was surprised at how enjoyable it is, especially since I don't think of the series highly. I already did several playthroughs by now.
6 Starfox 64 3D - The free roaming gimmick is as tedious as I remember it being. I prefer the first game.

february:

7 Tales of Eternia - I took a month or so break because the overly long final boss has a 1 hit KO QTE, which killed my motivation after my first try...
8 Burnout Legends - This maybe is my favorite game after Dracula X Chronicles on my LTTP PSP so far.
9 Monster Hunter World - Easily the best playing Monster Hunter, amazing audiovisuals on top of it. I don't mind the lack of G-content, instead I'm glad they toned the series down again. It went off the rails with idol dance numbers and whatnot before this game.

March:

10 The 25th Ward: The Silver Case - Visual novel by Grasshopper with great music and art, plus some intriguing story bits (but out of the 3 main stories it provides, I didn't like one in particular). A few puzzles are fun, but mostly it's just typing in numbers and passwords. This originally came out on cellphones in 2005, so that's probably why it's designed that way. It still plays better than Silver Case 1.

April:

11 Ratchet & Clank PS4 - I was surprised that I didn't hate this series' Dreamworks-esque make-up. I actually chuckled at points. The environments look great, but the characters are simply hideous. The gameplay is fun, though the main problem is that every weapon is lame in one way or the other. It's cool to combine them for havoc, but none of them are that fun on their own...
12 Ni No Kuni 2 - Forgettable story, but the gameplay and presentation made it addictive anyway. Side content feels meaningful, because it is all connected by the kingdom.
13 God Of War PS4 - Very good combat, good difficulty, okay exploration and puzzle solving, very good presentation/world making, annoying story and handholding in the beginning. The kid is shit.

May:

14 Ape Escape 2 - I liked its audiovisuals and mission structure, capturing apes feels gut. But the controls are wonky, mostly because of completely unintuitive button placement, not being able to change the inverted camera, etc.
15 Donkey Kong Country - replayed, thankfully I found the shortcut in the snow barrel stage in this playthrough.
16 Super Mario World - replayed. I like how every playthrough can be different because of its secrets, even though I still went for everything in the end.
17 Pacman 256 - I unlocked everything, so I guess that counts as finished. It's a fun iteration of Pacman, which is about going forward in an endless maze and upgrading powerups.

June:

18 Super Mario RPG - Well paced, written and the gameplay is more fun than several of the more modern Mario RPGs. It's got a really bad art direction though, and I'm usually fond of prerendered graphics.
19 Demon's Crest - I think this has some of the best SNES spritework I've seen. It's also a fun enough action platformer, but I don't like the IGA-esque progression - i.e. lock away the real ending and a bunch of levels with no indication of such during the fake credits.
20 Bloodstained: Ritual of the Moon - Competent Castlevania clone, there's not much else to say. It's exactly what it looks like.
21 Lara Croft GO - Very good puzzle design with a competent difficulty curve and natural introduction of new mechanics. Also, the atmosphere is pretty cool for a puzzle game and I'm glad I didn't play it on a phone, on which I probably wouldn't have played with sound.
22 Zelda: A Link Between Worlds - Replayed, this was not as good as I remember.

July:

23 Way of the Samurai 3 - Good music and illusion of freedom make this a cool samurai sandbox, but after a few endings and jank I had my fill.
24 Captain Toad 3DS - Cool collection of different pseudo-platforming stages based on Mario ideas and I guess perspective puzzles.
25 Sonic Mania - A perfect imagination of what a real/good Sonic game on Saturn would have been. Great. (So the marketing with the Genesis/Megadrive back cover is actually kinda dumb, not that it matters - the packaging is great too)

August:

26 Megaman Powered Up - Made Megaman 1 playable, though the controls for running are a little fucked up. You get used it to it though.
27 Final Fantasy XII Zodiac Age - Really enjoyed the world building and micro management, although I don't know whether I would've liked the og release without 2x speed and quicksaves.
28 Shenmue - Some of the pacing could have been better, but the atmosphere makes up for it. Moments like training your kungfu in the park between snow and neon lights while the sun sets and the lowkey OST plays, feel like nothing else.
29 Yakuza Kiwami 2 - The new engine is great, though I don't like how they increasingly want to hold your hand for sidequests instead of just letting you explore.

September:

30 Metal Gear Solid - Good game, although the story was obviously overhyped by kiddos back in the day. But the gameplay and atmosphere were still good. Nevertheless, it's refreshing to play a PS1 game with such a high quality voice work. I waited quite a while to get this game, because most versions over here force a horrid German dub on to the player.
31 Spyro 2 - Good platformer, like Banjo-lite. The level design is much more involving than the rather shallow first game. The camera is a little finnicky, but certainly managable compared to other games of that era.
32 Rayman Legends - Replayed this game for like the third time because of PS+. GOAT platformer controls, awesome quick pace, actual inventive worlds on top of its mechanics, doing a good online mode, fixed some annoyances of Origins, i.e. best platforming sequel of last/current generation.

october:

33 Megaman 11 - I think this is the hardest MM game that I've played, but the difficulty feels more natural. I like the level design, a shame about the awful New Mario Bros.-esque audiovisuals.
34 Shadow of the Colossus remake - The camera is still a little shit sometimes, but they've improved the controls just enough for me to finally feel the hype for this game thoroughly.
35 Bloodborne - My first (active) Platinum, chalice dungeons aren't great, but okay enough in coop. The execution ending was my final trophy.

November:

36 Castlevania 4 - feels good to go through the journey in one sitting (while other CV games feel more arcadey and less coherent in their 'adventure')
37 Castlevania Dracula Chronicles X - I changed between the remake and the og Rondo of Blood. I think both have their advantages, both great games.
38 Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow - Gladly I still liked this as much as back in the day, after I wasn't too hot on my LTTP Portrait of Ruin. The drop rate for souls should be higher, other than that it's great.
39 Kirby Superstar - fast paced and diverse gameplay, great presentation to this day

December:

40 Professor Layton Last Specter - I liked that the puzzle solving felt a bit more natural than prior titles. Though some main problems remain. i.e. There's arbitrary difficulty spikes and it's annoying when a puzzle is only hard, because its long ass explanation isn't clear (especially math things). On the other hand, the atmosphere is still ace. There's also an Animal Crossing clone in this, which is kind of interest
ing for an hour or two.
41 Tetris DS - I guess I "finished" it, because I got to the credits. I was never a fan of these types of puzzle games, but several QOL features at least made Tetris somewhat fun for me for the first time. Meanwhile, I can't for the life of me comprehend things like Puyo or Dr. Mario even with several hours of practice.
