To be fair, Sakaguchi nearly bankrupt the entire company and forced them to merge with Enix to stay solvent.
Nomura, while not as fiscally irresponsible, is pretty legendary for his completely inability to manage a project. I'm guessing sales of Kingdom Hearts 3 will dictate his job status at Square Enix.

I like how the opening song for the first game is so gay, I felt more ashamed playing Kingdom Hearts than I did Rapelay.

Wasn't Nomura juggling multiple projects during his time with FFXV until Square told him to focus on KH3? I remember reading somewhere that production didn't really start until a couple years before release, but I can't remember where that was.
I mean, if he was that bad at it they would't have made him director for the FFVII remake, would they?

KH1 was always a bad game.
KH2, while I still don't like it, was clearly a more cohesive design (improved combat + less boxy levels).

Tidus and Wakka are childhood friends with the protagonists, Leon, Aerith and Yuffie are friends with Merlin from The Sword in the Stone, Setzer is the champion of high school dildo-sword-boxing in a local town. It's better if you just accept it

Watching my GF play KH2 and I can't believe there was a time when developers thought it was cool to have that many cutscenes. Like, passing through a door is almost guaranteed to trigger a pointless, glacial 5 minute cutscene.

there's so many games from the early 2000s that are awful to go thru because of this. I was watching a speedrun of mega man x5 this morning and the game stops you seriously 10-15 times per level for needless dialog. even worse is all the games with tutorials that walked you through shit like how to open doors like we'd never encountered anything interactive in our whole lives til that point. game companies were so stupid with that shit.

I realized why mobile gaming took off so well in Japan and why console games fell off so much.
Japanese kids that grew up playing bloated JRPGs and bloated games in general grew up, more responsibilities, getting smacked with strenuous work schedules. JRPGs to a certain point in time were catered to children and teens.
Time and intelligence was built around kids and teens, their skill level too. Japanese developed games until this gen just about had no respect or thought put into the player's time.
Which, as a functioning adult, make the majority of JRPG's and even action games painful to go back to. Even darlings like Bayonetta and Vanquish are filled with constant cut scene interruptions.

Compared to past Japanese developed JRPGs? Absolutely. You wont find an Ubisoft game with 13 hours of cutscenes.
Its not even about the quality of content, its about intent and pacing. Like, I can think of a bazillion Japanese developed games that have terrible interruptions and pacing issues.
What would be the Western equivalent of FF XIII? Where the game opens up and gets good after 20 hours of linear, awfully designed and paced gameplay? That's not comparable to collecting feathers and dust pans in Far Cry. MGS4, another game that has no Western comparison.

I still prefer cutscenes to the western games where you get locked in a room or have to walk realllllly slooooow while stuff happens - at least cutscenes you can skip. Those types of 'gameplay' sequences you normally can't.

I don't think the number of "walk slow and listen to Anya babble" moments in western games comes close to the number of "put the controller down and listen to Snake babble about monster movies" moments in Japanese games, but I obviously don't have any quantitative way of proving that. :doge
Either way, Japanese games have gotten a lot better about that stuff than they were in the early 2000s.

I really like the levels and the gameplay they've shown, but the whole Disney thing still just weirds me out. :-\ I wish Final Fantasy or some other SE IP looked this fun instead.
