This might be the ultimate Animal Crossing if they pull it off right.
Then, when it comes to online and local wireless, up to eight players can be on an island. This is doubled from New Leaf’s previous 4-player limit. And though there is a travel theme to New Horizons, Kyogoku confirmed you can’t set up a tent on a friend’s island. However, Kyogoku told IGN you can make up to eight playable accounts on one Nintendo Switch and they will be able to live on the same island. You cannot have multiple islands, however.
You’ll start with two or so neighbors in Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Nogami said that when you first arrive on the island through Nook Inc. Deserted Island Getaway Package, you’ll arrive with two or so other random Islanders who chose to participate in the package as well. Nogami said because they invested in this package that they have as much of a right to stay on the island as you do. However, Kyogoku said before they choose a spot for their home, they’ll check with you to see if it’s okay. If you don’t like where they settle down you can tell them you don’t want to build in that particular spot and move their house location to wherever you see fit.
Nogami said the elements and buildings of the town we unlock won’t be in the same order as New Leaf's, however.

In New Leaf, we were able to recruit and invite Villagers to be part of our town. Kyogoku said there would be a system provide an opportunity to invite animals to the island, but not necessarily seek out one of Animal Crossing's many animals.

If you buy it digital, I’m assuming yes. No idea how saves work on switch. But in the past the save data for cart games was on the cart and I see no reason why this would be different on switch.
Saw something about this having no cloud saves. So when I want to update to a new Switch in a year or two I have to use their draconian save transfer method?

Perhaps most exciting is that you can now easily view the screenshots in full screen from the eShop on your console… almost as if you were playing it yourself! Almost.
I get that it makes the game more convenient and more immediately enjoyable (and therefore is a direct upgrade to its predecessors) to most, but there's something to be said for being dropped into an established town as just another indebted villager as opposed to being some type of Mad King that gets to shape not only the stores and personage of the island, but who now can split and rend the very earth itself before their whims!
Like, being able to control where other people set their houses rubs against what I liked about Animal Crossing and pushes it closer to being something like The Sims.

Tips for AC beginners:
- a key way to paying off bills is fruit
- each person gets their own unique village fruit. It could be bananas, cherries, durans, or others. Shake a tree and some fruit will drop. Plant them right and fruit trees will sprout. When it grows you will have fruit to sell. This is called native fruit. Native fruit sells well but not as much as...
- foreign fruit. You obtain foreign fruit by spending time with friends. You go to your friends village or they to yours and get some fruit. Then you plant it, let it grow, and sell it. You'll get tons of money doing this.
- Turnips. Joan the Boar sells Turnips every Sunday. I'm not sure if she's in ACNH as there's a new piggy that sells them now, but you basically buy turnips in bulk to sell. It's a risk. Then in the morning you check your towns stalk market. You can sometimes predict trends but it's mostly random. You have 7 days to sell all of your turnips before they become rotten. You can get a million bells easy by buying a shit ton of turnips and loading them at the store. Each person has their own personalized pricing for stalks, so we often check with friends and update each other on the prices turnips are going for. Maybe your turnips are selling for 50 but I'm selling them for 1000 a turnip. If you bought lots of turnips as an investment, say 300 turnips, you can earn a sizable amount of Bells with ease. But there's risk. For one, you can't miss out and you have to stay completely on top of the stalk market. If you invest 200k into Turnips and they go rotten you've wasted your money and you can't get it back.
As said, the turnips character only comes on Sunday mornings before 12pm and if you use time to skip with turnips they will automatically go rotten.
And I'm surprised there's no gate at the outset because how else do you get there? You have to unlock the airport?

You can play it both ways. Be an interior designer moving stuff around or just have a functional house and hunt bugs and go fishing. I like to hunt bugs and go fishing and couldn't give a shit about moving furniture around.
To say I'm excited for this game is an understatement. Not sure I've ever lost my mind over a game's launch quite like this one. Thing is I've never even picked up any Animal Crossing game at launch until now. :lol I've always been able to wait a few days.

The grid is still kinda there, just the boundaries are gone. In fact this is the first game since the GameCube one to letter the acres again (A1-F5 in GC, A0-F6 in NH.)

I'm really not sure how you could say Animal Crossing is "about" collecting. They haven't changed or deepened the collection aspects of the game since the series started, and they've only cut down on the types of things that fill out the museum.
If you look at the improvements and changes they have made since the original game, they have largely fallen into two categories
-increasing granularity of cosmetic customization
-increasing speed at which you obtain and/or utilize said customization options, whether that's totally overhauling house decoration or cutting down wait times to nothing
Everything else has been pretty much the same. There's pretty obviously one specific type of player that they're catering to, I doubt fish/bug completionists are their highest priority. Game's about peacocking yo

I've decided to ignore Miles entirely while play.
So far they feel like a downgrade of New Leaf's great badge system to me with a currency thrown on top. But it seems actual utility is hidden behind them so at the end of each play session I've decided to check in and get my points and unlocks to see what I recouped from the play sesh.
My session was about 2 hours. My usual, average morning Animal Crossing run is like 30 minutes to an hour. I'm very pleased. I still haven't shaken my trees yet or fully weeded my entire town, which I will do tonight.
Ah, the feel of Animal Crossing. The pleasing feeling of not having to rush through and a play session being what you personally make of it.

I keep coming back to Miles+ being a lot like MEOW coupons, just with more utility (Mystery Tours instead of Campground items.) And they're infinite now instead of 2-per-day/2-per-week. And like I did with MEOW coupons, I'll eventually end up ignoring them after I've got my town settled the way I like.
Regular Miles are seemingly a replacement for the badge system yeah. Not sure it's better or worse. The badge system felt more Animal Crossing-y, and I liked the consistent bronze-silver-gold progression. I got eight gold badges in NL and they're some of my proudest achievements in gaming. I'm not sure the Miles "postcards"(?) offer the same feeling, but I suppose it hasn't been long enough for me to know for sure... And seeing Phineas pop up and wander around my town always gave me a rush of excitement. "OMG I earned something!" The NookPhone chime just isn't the same.
Something I do think is a straight improvement is the multi-part achievements letting you clearly know the goal you just accomplished and how close you are (in real time!) to the next one (like the fishing streak quest.) I hated the guessing game on some of the badges (like the catalog.)
There were 24 badges in NL, and there's 81 Miles "postcards" in NH for comparison. But some in NH are one-offs and some are five-parters. I think having more things to do long-term means you're accomplishing things and making obvious forward progress more often. That's what I'm hoping anyways! :) I believe I'm up to the challenge of tackling these things. 😤

I have to be honest though, I liked the semi-educational quiz he did in NL better than finding five phone parts. And the "prize" he mailed usually corresponded to the answer of the quiz, which felt good and reinforced the lesson (thinking of the young'uns.) But ah well, smartphones! :P

I'm pleasantly surprised by how good the local coop is in this game. It's super easy to switch off who the leader is and access your inventory when you need to and the potential for cute photoshoots is :lawd

Basically, grass deteriorates if you run on it a lot. So most just walk. Since your town looks likes shit if you kill it. It's why the walk speed is so fast now.

You get one free ticket. Tickets normally cost 2k nook miles. You can buy at the green panel at the nook store. Just go to miles redeem store. To claim your free ticket go to the airport and talk to the Dodo. Say you wanna fly and use the ticket. You will meet an animal there. if you like them tell them to join your village and build a house there. There's lots of stones, palm trees (plant the coconuts to grow them on your own island), and more rare fish on Nook's island.
Edit: town is still so empty and the elephant I met hasn't started to move yet.

I've only seen people with oranges, peaches, and apples this time. Not one person with cherries or durians or something. It's bizaare.

It’s not very game-y, which I don’t know necessarily mind. I like town/business simulation games like Game Dev Story and Cities Skylines. You can hit rocks with shovels (or axes) and iron is one of the more uncommon resources to pop out, but it's also used in a lot of key crafting recipes so it's kinda the most important resource (I think, so far, maybe.)
Have to compliment the addition of the shop drop box. It's genius. I haven't had time to play since this morning when all I did was talk to nook, place my bridge, and turn in my items to Blathers. I'm working tonight, so by the time I get home the shop should be closed. Because I've been busy I haven't even had the opportunity to do my daily pruning routine - shaking trees, digging holes, hitting rocks. But because of the drop box I can do my errands and put what I want to sell in the drop box. One complaint I've always had about AC is that if you miss a shop closing and still want to sell you either have to travel to a friend's town or wait till morning to do something as simple selling which results in an annoying over filled inventory which makes play tedious. This is such a life saving option. A+ solution.
Oh man, when donating things at the museum, only the things that you haven't donated are available to select. No more wasting time with Blathers telling you that you've already donated!!!

Oh! One more suggestion: ability to view the passports of your friends list! This was a fun feature in New Leaf, and you could even check what badges your friends had achieved. Seems like there's no corresponding way to see a friend's "profile" in New Horizons.

In fact your internet seemed a little flaky in general, it took two "tries" before a successful attempt to come to my island, and similarly there were two "tries" before the session soft-crashed.
When it crashed it said "A player you were with just left silently..." or something like that, and then Dickie and I walked out of the airport. I saw all the trees we had shaken still had apples and yup, soft crash. :(
If we could figure out what caused it we can tell other players and prevent it from potentially becoming widespread.

Potato go to the green machine at nooks tent and redeem nook miles and buy the tool kit which acts like a belt. You can swap tools in seconds rather than shuffle through all of them. Saves time.Already had it, just forgot what it was called.

-So you can "talk" via text entry. But this is a single player game, right? So you can only talk to AIs. Do the AIs have some type of bot AI to actually react to things you say or messages you write on the town board? Otherwise I don't understand what the point of talking/messages are.

Yup. The Nintendo Switch Online smartphone app has a new ACNH zone, and it has a QR code scanner that will let you import New Leaf and Happy Home Designer (and acpatterns.com...) custom patterns. :D You can then download it into your game by pressing Plus inside the Custom Designs app.
Bummer is you have to send and download each pattern one at a time.

New Horizons is sorely missing a multiplayer feature like the island in New Leaf.

It's kind mind-bending because the Mystery Tours are basically Animal Crossing's version of MMO instanced dungeons... and yet there's no way to take friends. I kinda get why, maybe: mystery tours are basically resource pinatas, and they're scaled for one player, and there's not much else to do other than pick the island dry.
But for sure there should be a way to initiate a multiplayer-type tour and have everyone sit in the Dodo Airlines chairs when they're ready to join, just like on Tortimer's Island. Maybe that's why they're there? There's 8 chairs in Dodo Airlines, and they're promising regular free updates... :thinking

How does that work?
Different Switches (local wireless/online): open your gate at Dodo Airlines or choose to fly to another island. Orville will ask whether it's local or online and then you should be set. Dodo Codes will let you invite or fly to anyone who's not on your Switch's system friends list.

I've had a good mix of rare and common fish. The distribution is always tied to the RNG, which in previous games got reset every time you entered and exited a building. So if you're getting nothing but bass, that might be something to try.
Bait is an optional mechanic that can be ignored entirely should you want the classic Animal Crossing fishing experience. Crafting could be smoother in general, but that's not an indictment of bait, which is a useful addition IMO.
Trying to catch all the fish and bugs needed before the season changed over was ALWAYS stressful in Animal Crossing (but only if you're a museum completionist.) You're either looking at waiting a year or time traveling and no one should like doing either.
I kinda think it’s just not a very good season for fishing, and sea bass have always been filler 🤷♀️

Hmm IIRC winter is the best time for fish, to make up for bugs generally sucking in the colder months.

Listen, you might get some hate for this, but you do you. But you'll have to realize like I did that not every AC game is made for every AC fan. It's something I accepted with every game after the GameCube one, but especially City Folk. In the larger Animal Crossing community, City Folk has a large share of defenders who argue the online was something special and still hasn't been replicated. But I dropped it in a similar timeframe as you're considering dropping New Horizons. It just didn't do it for me in the same ways its predecessor and successor did.
But that's fine! I took a bunch of time off from the series and ended up having low expectations for New Leaf. Thankfully, New Leaf exceeded them. You've always been welcome to go back to old ACs if the new one isn't scratching whichever specific itch you need from the newest games.
And who knows, maybe a year down the road after a dozen updates, you come back and NH is way better than you'd thought.
All I'll say is it's good to keep an open mind.

The main fish I am catching:No way. The hemisphere system is the best thing they have done bar none. Do you know how frustrating it's always been to have the weather in reverse? Christmas is in summer here, but my animal crossing village is snowing, no thanks. It also means I can visit someone in the northern hemisphere to catch the fish and insects that I missed instead of waiting 12 months or time traveling.

Wish you'd stay, even if you throw NH in the closet for a while. Updates will only make the game better and maybe you change your mind on some things later. And I'll always be here when you come back to help out if you need to get caught up, like people here were for me in NL. :)

Spent hours last night fishing for a string fish and came up empty. Never thought an Animal Crossing game would make me rage quit. I just want to chill on my island, not make a tedious loop gathering Manila clams, crafting bait, tediously pole vaulting rivers and climbing cliffs, then grinding fish.

Bait wouldn't be so bad if the clams stacked and you could make 30 bait at once without the stupid animation every time
I think imposing on yourself the need to fish those fish within your first week & completing all projects as soon as they're available is kinda a self-imposed stress.
Some of the projects in NL seemed to have taken forever, here things get done pretty quick.
Today was the first day I've even used bait, doing minimal chores has allowed me to buy everything I could want so far in... if you want to max out your house a week and a half after buying the game I guess that's the kind of stress you have to put on yourself, but I don't think meaningful progress/furniture acquisition has been this fast in an AC game (sans the fact that you have to build facilities).
The dock for the airport also counts as pier, btw

Combined with tools regularly breaking and you have a supposed disruption on typical chill animal crossing formula.
Also it taking two days for the museum (and one entire day wher you can't do present anything to Blathers) is the opposite of fast.

You don't need bait to catch a Stringfish. I used it for my first one but I've caught like 3 more au naturale
The only Marlin I caught was without bait as well
A great improvement would be if when at home you could craft with things from storage without having to put them in your pockets, such a chore!

How does that work?
Same Switch: someone on a different Switch profile can start the game and put their house somewhere on the island. You're still in charge of most island progression stuff, but they'll have their own house/storage/etc., and you can join each other on the same screen at any time with a second controller. The screen will follow the "leader," but the leader can be switched on the fly.
Different Switches (local wireless/online): open your gate at Dodo Airlines or choose to fly to another island. Orville will ask whether it's local or online and then you should be set. Dodo Codes will let you invite or fly to anyone who's not on your Switch's system friends list.
When someone is visiting your island this way, they can drop items on the ground, pick stuff up, fish, catch bugs, shake trees, send text chats, and a bunch of other stuff. Vice-versa when you're visiting someone else's island. You can then send or accept invitations to become a "Best Friend," and then you'll be able to use shovels and axes in each other's towns, but you'll also be able to send each other direct messages even when not in the same town at the same time (online DMs), and see when each other is online.
An example would be sending a quick "Hey you're online, can I sell fruit?" message, you open your gates, and your friend sells their fruit on your island for 5x its price on their island. Then since they're there, you two decide to go fishing together before they leave. Stuff like that is how multiplayer works in Animal Crossing. :)

Not sure if it's every time Celeste appears, but the first time I met her and she told me about the wand, later in the night there were random shooting stars and I pressed "A" for them. Then the star fragments were on the beach the next day.

It actually will cost you 100k to move it 2 squares because the new position can't overlap with the existing position. You'd need a temp intermediate spot

Went to mystery island last night and caught some cute wind flowers. It's not letting me plant them ???
Being able to eat fruit and then pick up a tree is sooooo useful. Was micromanaging my tree placement and being able to just up and shovel the fucker up rather than chop the damn tree down and replant entirely is beyond helpful.

The crafting item "young spring bamboo" will only be receivable until May 31st! But normal bamboo for crafting will be year-round.
Also growing bamboo seems to work differently in this game, a fully grown sprout will ONLY spawn a single bamboo shoot in the ground for its ENTIRE lifetime. (Bamboo in ACNL spawned 1-3 every couple days.)
I also ran into trouble trying to replant a grown bamboo in the same spot ("No where to plant this here!") So bamboo is trickier than other things it seems.

In the next game 7 years down the line, the stone and iron axes will probably be folded into the same item. I thought it was clever they went to the trouble of making a new type of axe, the only real "spinoff" tool, in order to facilitate the new crafting system while preserving legacy axe gameplay.
But yeah with the ability to eat fruit and dig up trees, its usefulness is almost nothing... Basically if you're out of fruit and Miles to try for more, and you really really need to clear some trees, the iron axe is all you got. But if you have even a handful of fruit, yeah, it's pointless. You even make money selling whole trees so there's even a bell incentive to use the new stone axe.

That's true but I have 20 coconut trees. If crafting weren't such a pain I'd say it'd be a no brainer to turn them into coconut juice. Like if this were MH's crafting systems I'd have them converted and sold in like 10 seconds flat. In NH the process would probably take 5-8 full minutes.

It's actually easier in this game than previous games. Set yourself up close and take two hits with your shovel, then walk a little towards the rock and take two more hits.
If you can't get 7 resources, then set yourself up and dig holes behind you. That will prevent you from bouncing out of range.

My pockets are always full. My house storage is always full. So far there appear to be no dressers for more storage. It's so tedious to me. I constantly have to empty my pockets and crap. So I don't buy anything and I don't bother digging for anything so I've stopped having fun. Then there's the fact you have to have tools on you constantly which takes up 5-6 spaces plus crap for crafting which means you'll always have at least 10-11 spaces full of required crap. Between making citizen satisfaction into a grind, the crappy egg event, and tbh I'm just not finding it fun anymore.

BTW ran into some annoying infrastructure things just now.
- You can only have up to 8 ramps (I assume bridges have the same arbitrary limit)
- It takes a full day to destroy a ramp or bridge, and you can't start a new project during this time >:(

I have been putting some serious time into the design of my island, moving houses, terraforming here and there, destroying old bridges that don't make sense anymore. I'm up to 4 stars so far, but I'm not done decorating yet. Tomorrow is going to be a great day!

The sell price at Nook's varies twice per day (AM and PM), and also varies between islands. It's possible to make millions of Bells (currency) in profit if your investment is large enough. Most people invest 100-200k in bells every week I think.

So if its something they are into supposedly the meter fills faster. (apparently wrapping them as gifts also helps)
My understanding is that this friendship meter can give you a framed picture plus also the remaining reactions at different levels.
Also the reactions are based on the personality types so its best to have all 8 types so you can get all of them

I haven't tried moving more than one at a time but from being all up in that menu all the time, they don't prevent you from trying to move another one IIRC... but dunno for certain.

Makes sense. Speaking of animals moving out of their own accord: is there way to see who’s at risk? I try to talk to them and give them gifts whenever, but I’m not obsessing over it.
I don't think I ever deliberately tried to get villagers to move out after the GameCube game (which I played experimentally-dickish sometimes.)
Even Rodeo in this game decided to move out of his own accord to make way for my Hopper amiibo. I basically stopped talking to him leading up to that tho lol.

The promised second summer update for Animal Crossing: New Horizons is coming very soon, and it brings with it some exciting changes. According to Nintendo, the two big gameplay additions are the ability to dream and new fireworks shows. Meanwhile, for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers, a cloud backup system is also coming so you won’t lose your island.
For dreaming, Nintendo says players will be able to take a nap in any bed in their house. “While dozing off, you may find yourself in a strange realm where you’ll be greeted by Luna,” the company explains. “Luna offers visits to other islands as a dream, and with her help, you can share your island as a dream with others too. She will grant those who share their island a ‘Dream Address’ which players can exchange and use to visit each other’s island in a dream. In dreams, nothing is permanent because nothing you do is saved, so explore to your heart’s content.”
The fireworks shows will be a regular occurrence, meanwhile, taking place every Sunday evening in August at 7PM local time. Players will be able to buy raffle tickets during these events to earn prizes.
Perhaps the biggest part of the update, though, is the long-requested option for players to back up their islands via cloud saves. Here’s how Nintendo describes the feature:
Nintendo Switch Online members can enable the new island backup service, which automatically uploads island and user save data to the internet at certain times. If your Nintendo Switch system is lost or damaged, you may be able to recover your island paradise as long as you’ve enabled island backup. In the event of loss or damage, contact Nintendo Consumer Support about restoring the island and user save data on your new or repaired Nintendo Switch system. After your island data and individual player data is restored, you can get back to building your island community.
The company also says that “a function specific to Animal Crossing: New Horizons to move users and save data to another system is planned for later this year. Details will be announced in the future.”
This will be the second major summer update for the game, following the recent addition of swimming. The update will be available starting on July 30th, and the company also teased a fall update for the future.

Early game it’s just about familiarizing yourself with the systems. Work on your nook mile goals, hit all the rocks, plant the money tree, get your recipes, check in with the daily visitor, etc. while you’re going about your island catch bugs and fish along the way. Early goals I would say get your house expanded a bit and fill out your museum with any new critters you find. But there is no rush, your loan has no interest and can be paid back whenever you feel like it. It can take a while but you will eventually build up a routine and build up your crafting recipes, and then you can start planning and developing your islandCool cool. I like catching bugs so far, have a big collection despite the museum still being under construction.
So I bought this but have no idea what I'm doing. Seemed I did all I could for day 1, museum guy on the way and nook is going to get me a house.

First, this holiday introduces a pair of Lucky Red Envelope and Bokjumeoni Lucky Pouch items in Nook Shopping that can be used to wrap Bells.
When you wrap Bells using one of these two items, the item is converted into either the Lucky Money or Sebaetdon items in your inventory. Then each converted item can be unwrapped to reveal some Bells, ideally for gifting to another player.
Secondly, a gorgeous Lunar New Year Decoration furniture item can be ordered for a wall-mounted decoration to celebrate the holiday.
