Title: Foods that you've never tried but are morbidly curious about
Post by: agrajag on December 25, 2018, 10:21:47 AM
I've never had pickled eggs or pickled sausages. I think they called them hot sausages. My ex used to ask me to buy them for her at the gas station, but I never worked up the courage to try one.

Haggis. This one doesn't seem that bad, just never been anywhere where I would have an opportunity to try it.

Chitlins. Hard pass on this one. I heard it smells like poo.

I've never tried tripe either. I heard it can be quite good if prepared right, but the look of honeycomb tripe in its raw state grosses me out.

According to Fenaroli’s Handbook of Flavor Ingredients, published in 2005, total annual consumption of both castoreum extract and castoreum liquid was around 250 pounds, undoubtedly because the milking process is unpleasant for all parties involved.

at this restaurant I worked for, one of the guys came up with a teally good special where we cured rabbit overnight, braised it with aromatics  picked the meat and served it ad a ragout with fresh pici pasta.

 :delicious

On the topic of pigs ears, they are delightful when done right. If they haven't been braised long enough, they will be hard as a rock when you fry 'em up. I almost broke a tooth on a pig's ear once. But when they're properly done it is an excellent bar snack. Crispy pig ear tossed in MSG and togarashi  :lawd

Caviar is one of those things like truffles and foie gras. I personally love all three, but some people just don't get the appeal. Purists will say you should eat caviar on its own, but for me it is too strong, but a very nice compliment to dishes and sauces.

The little Chinese restaurant had nice looking pig's ears (fried) so I'll try that soon, the rest I tasted today was great.

Truffle has an interesting taste but it's really overwhelming past the first slice. Good in very small quantities.

Foie gras is awesome too. That I prefer on its own, always thought it was gimmicky as an ingredient (except cooked on a pan).

Otherwise, horse steak is :delicious (I guess not everyone tried that).

Because the American mustang is a revered animal

Also, no one is authorized to inspect horsemeat and it’s illegal to sell uninspected meat

Probably something to do with conditioning or cattling conditions I guess ? I know France and Romania (IIRC) have slaughterhouse for that but it's not very common even in EU countries.

One thing I regret not doing in Japan was trying horse meat. Will be potentially taking a trip to somewhere in Europe next year with my gf (Italy is on the short list) so I'll try it there.

Yea, that's what I hear, I would love to have it prepared in a fine restaurant. Every time I've had the opportunity I picked something else because they had so many great options.

This isn't morbid but I have wanted to try lingonberries because apparently it's what Swedish Fish are based on, and you have to go out of your way to track them down and order online, they aren't just sitting out next to the cherries and strawberries at the supermarket

Rabbit is good stuff, kinda like duck in terms of richness.

I had horse in Montreal cause why not. It was ok.

I've seen whale meat at grocery stores in Japan but can't do it.

There’s a place in Baton Rouge that has the most delicious oysters I’ve ever had. If you want the name I’ll share.

I'm from Long Island and never actually had an oyster either... maybe next year I'll go to the Oyster Bay festival. It's not out of disgust since I give most non-dairy foods the college try... just never gotten around to it for some reason.

pro-tip: they check them when they shuck them, but keep your nostrils open when you try oysters. If you swallow a spoiled one, it can seriously fuck you up. They should smell like the ocean, but not doodoo from the ocean.

Also, I always recommend west coast oysters for newbs. They're a lot milder and cleaner/sweeter in flavor than the briny east coast oysters. Kumamotos usually do well with people (or kusshis or shigokus really, but kumos are more iconic).

Fish eggs have a satisfying pop and salty taste

Of course, I love uni, it's one of the greatewt things ever. A little inception here, but grilled oysters with uni butter is one of the best things in life. As with all seafood, uni has to be very good quality and freshness (most uni is sold frozen in US, fresh is extremely expensive, so freshness isn't usually an issue, but it does spoil very quickly from the moment it is thawed). Sometimes the uni tongues will come in all chewed up. So yeah, that would explain your inconsistent experience. Avocado toast topped with uni and paper thin slices of lardo = decadent gourmand heaven.

Game meat is more popular in states where hunting is more prevalent. It's probably not too popular because of logistic reasons and also because the average person is afraid of trying different things when it comes to food. In Florida, for example, it's always dicey trying to sell a dish that is rabbit or squab in a restaurant.
