Outer Worlds isn't confirmed yet tho right?

If so, they can expect exactly 0 euro's from my side of things.

Having multiple digital store fronts is bad for the consumer.

Not really, but it is if they feature their own exclusive titles that aren't available elsewhere, stuck in a launcher missing even the most basic options for devs and consumers alike.

Ofcourse I'm mad, why wouldn't you be? EGS is a terrible anti consumer, anti dev launcher. It's absolute trash. This is a terrible way for the PC market to develop. It's dogshit.

Fuck these developers, I thought they cared about their loyal fanbase. Guess they don't give a fuuuuuck. So yeah I'll pirate their games instead. Fuck em, they don't need my money apparantly.

Nothing wrong with launching on all PC distribution platforms at the same time. Maybe put a discount on the EGS version to let people trickle in there? But nahh, let's just buy up the right to sell this game for a year.

It's like only Wallmart can carry the latest Call of Duty game. It's fucking bullshit.

For the Quantic Dream games, they’re only coming to PC because of Epic funding the ports. I can’t really understand people having an issue with the exclusivity for them (it’s also not permanent, only one year).

Yeah games go cheap fast and i dont have time to play them as it is, but if the only storefront was epic's or steam's, id probably have a different view.
Also the sims and its 300 Ikea packs for 9$ each, makes a good case for it.

Having to launch an ENTIRELY SEPARATE APP is annoying.

My initial reaction to seeing Outer Worlds up there was annoyance, but it's either that or play it on my PS4, so I guess I'll install this dumb thing for that.

I'm not going to bullshit you with some wacky Tencent or spyware conspiracy theories.  Simply put: I'm already entrenched in Steam and don't want to move to another platform.  I get what Epic is doing and don't fault them for trying to expand their marketshare, but I don't like what they're doing.

Also Tim Sweeney comes off as a bit of a cunt and I don't like him.

Great little game. The only bad thing I could say about it:
-bad combat with werewolves

The gunplay is satisfying, the visuals amazing, setting is great and the story is alright.

Honestly only people not liking it are scrubs who think its bad value, well guess what, just buy it, play it, sell it, I paid like 15 bucks to experience this and it was more then worth it. Solid 8/10

Honestly, most of those games seem like probable ass (outer worlds from over-the-hill Obsidian and control from over-the-hill Remedy) or are known, old ass (the shitty David cage games and the Ubisoft stuff)

And before I catch shit for it, I don't understand the hype for outer worlds..at all. "Obsidian" doesn't make good rpgs. Writers, designers, and directors do, and the people responsible for just about everything that's regarded as a classic (kotor 2, new vegas, alpha protocol if I'm being nice) from the company in the past 15 years either left the company or chained themselves to the sinking pillars of eternity ship. Tim Cain's work on Fallout can't be understated, but that was a long, long time ago and a shooter rpg is an entirely different beast than a crpg from 20 years ago. The "Obsidian name" brought us dungeon siege 3. They aren't immune to releasing crap.

Having multiple digital store fronts is bad for the consumer.

I'm really not sure why I'm supposed to be upset about this. I already have to boot up origin and bnet for their exclusives. Being split across several stores and launchers was already what I was dealing with. This isn't any more or less anti consumer than it already is to me and the freakouts over the epic store just remind me of origins starting days. Just because I had mass effect 1 and 2 on steam and mass effect 3 suddenly had to be bought on origin did not destroy my experience as a pc gamer.

I guess I look st that feature list and epic has all of the stuff covered that I actually care about except for multiple controller support (depending on what that even means).

It has cloud saves, friends lists, chat, and 3rd party keys and that is the basic functionality that you need.

I feel like that list is listing a bunch of dumb stuff that doesn’t really matter just to inflate the list.

Like does anybody really care that EGS is missing badges and trading cards?

That table was originally from ResetEra where the OP was desperate to prove Steam was the superior client :doge The initial version was more amusing since the feature list was based solely on features Steam had and excluded any features other clients/services had that Steam didn't. They also initially put 'No' on various cells which some clients/services did have. In its current form though it's a fairly worthwhile comparison.

Tbh I think some were more upset recently at Epic pulling the carpet from under the feet of games slated to be released on Steam and accepting pre-orders like Metro and some other title, which snowballed at the perfect time to create a greater unease with Epic's exclusivity agreements.

Personally I don't have much of an opinion on Epic mostly since the exclusive games don't excite me but if they improved their features more rapidly I think it might be more compelling once some titles I'm interested in come along.

Steam controllers  :lol

You don't need to use those under the Steam client. You use the same rebinding functions that the Steam controller launched with for PS4, X-box, and Nintendo controllers a la Keyboard and Mouse rebinds.

All without needing a third party driver like DS4Windows. Any game that is using the Steam controller API allows this. Something the Epic store and other clients do not have (thereby needing third party drivers).

This may be something that isn't "huge" for most folks, but it's a simple convenience.

There's also Proton support built-into the Steam client. Something Origin, Uplay, and Epic Games Store has yet to do (to support Linux folks). Meanwhile, Valve is putting money into the DXVK developers coffers to improve that which is actually helping WINE out in the long-run in regards to getting Windows apps/games onto Linux.

Liking anime and having a big titted anime avatar is relevant in a discussion about taste in videogames, as its indicative of ones taste. It directly adresses somones tastenor lack thereof. I don't venture off topic.

One could say you are the one making this ad hominem chrono, as it has nothing to do with taste in games or taste in general.

I'm not saying Rax opinion is invalid to me due to something arbitrary like having a bee allergy (or the way he communicates like you are doing now), but by account of his taste.

No, look up "ad hominem." I was attacking your logic, not your character.

You're making broad-stroke attacks on someone based on an anime avatar, which I'd normally support, except that you're positing it relates to taste in videogames as opposed to forms of passive entertainment, i.e. anime. At a stretch, I can accept that it relates to media/entertainment, but if I accept your judgement, I'd have to stand ready to defend my oglaf avatar as though it relates to my penchant for vidya, when it speaks more toward my appreciation for adult-focused sequential art.

Anyhow, cutie, know your fallacies. I'd go so far as to suggest you'd do well on TheBore to make your arguments falla-centric.

It's weird how Lager questioned Rah's tastes in games while using his avatar as an example. Rah's avatar happens to come from one of the greatest games ever made and isn't even really animu.

Having multiple digital store fronts is bad for the consumer.

.....wut?

I don't see how this is hard to understand.

Game companies can be greedy fucks. On digital streaming services we already witness properties being moved from service to service. Multiple games already have flip the script and moved from Steam when it was available for pre-order, to Epic's store. If you "buy" a game from Steam that Epic manages to coax into joining their storefront, they might have a condition that comes with "it can't be on steam". They might take their games *off* of Steam then. They already do fucked up shit with one store front. Square Enix had taken the original Sleeping Dogs completely off Steam when Definitive Edition came out to get you to buy Definitive Edition, even though the older version was better for people with old computers. If it's something that allows co-existence, something like GOG and fills its own niche, that's fine. But when it comes to competition? With digital products you "buy" (aka rent)? I bet you if you already bought a game on Steam that you do not get access to it on Epic's store.

Or it's possible (read "probable") that the new version of Sleeping Dogs has a number of error/bug fixes built into it, and they don't want to support two versions of the game, even if it's not as friendly to users of old computers. Publishers are free to revise new sales, but storefronts are usually required to keep purchased software available through the marketplace for people who have previously purchased the title. Are you saying that's not the case here?
Title: Re: Epic Games Store takes no fucking prisoners
Post by: benjipwns on March 25, 2019, 05:41:41 AM
No, it's the case. Sleeping Dogs stays in your account if you got it before, but you can only purchase the Definitive Edition now. Cindi's just upset about this currently.

I've never had a game with a major publisher revoke keys on Steam. Only some bundle garbage. One was an accident, the other was the creator having some kind of meltdown and revoking everything he had made from everywhere.

Why is that? Money's money.
I mean exclusives are cancer all around, but if you're a developer who gets offered money to be exclusive to a store, who's the consumer to say "don't do it"? Only exception is prople who crowdfunded, that's a dick move too far.

Torchlight came out at a time when there just weren't many ARPGs on the market, it was fun in 2009 but there's just no real reason to go back to it today. Plus, it's been heavily discounted, and maybe given away for free elsewhere at some point, many times already.

Grim Dawn, Victor Vran, The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing, Path of Exile...that's where it's at these days.

I don't blame them, as the pair probably made off with half a million dollars each, but don't expect me to buy the game - especially not after that condescending blog post.

because gametards are calling for a BOYCOTT TO PROTEST EPIC AND THESE DEVS but also i wanna play so ill use this as an excuse to pirate it that'll show em. that's not a boycott, its just resetti tier "I'm skipping the state of the union" level protesting.

i'm annoyed at this shenmue thing and plan to get a refund on my KS pledge but i'm not also going to pirate the game. i'll just move on with my life til i can get it on steam or i'll probably just forget about the game.

Not wanting to take part in fucking up the PC space by investing in buying up games to put on your storefront exclusively makes you a manbaby

Not even bother getting into all the reasons this facade they call a store is so much worse for everyone involved except Epic.

wow so much choice for the consumer!

Greedy cunt devs like this when people have supported them for years with their hard earned money when the devs were begging for Patreon supporters

Yeah Epic really is bringing value to the table here guys! Wow what an impressive display of consumer choice, freedom to play on whatever platform you choose, funding indie games from the start! They really are such a positive impact on the entire gaming market <3

you guys really are morons

Funny thing is this Ooblets game isn't even Epic exclusive. It's also an MS Play Anywhere game so it'll be on Xbox and MS Store on PC. Same as Metro Exodus was an Epic "exclusive" but also on PC MS Store and part of PC Game Pass.

Wouldn't be too surprised if this Ooblets thing ends up being PC Game Pass as well.

No, you are a man baby because of the way you absolutely freak out about it, threaten to pirate games, etc.

Simply not choosing to use EGS does not make someone a manbaby.  There are plenty of people doing that without writing multiple essays on the topic.

And trying to educate folks on it who keep saying "it's just another icon to launch games" is something a manbaby would do?

Essays? Cmon that's just hyperbole.

And what do you mean, threaten to pirate? I'll pirate anything, first to check if it even runs on my pc, and if it does and the game is good I will gladly purchase it on Steam or GOG. Some games I'll buy outright ( Like RE2 PC for instance ) without even checking to see if they work on my pc which thankfully hasn't burned me yet.

With a huge library across multiple consoles and digital storefronts, I have no issue buying games. I would have no issue with EGS if they launched games across that store and other stores. If they offered people a bigger discount on EGS because of a supposed lowered dev cut, that would have pulled me towards their platform with ease ( if it wasn't that frequently hacked ).

Agressively moneyhatting games isn't an attractive situation for me, considering what I like most about the PC platform is choice.

The store is really shit though. I mean I'm using the Windows Game Pass beta and I use Uplay and Origin and they're all kinda shitty compared to Steam (Gog Galaxy 2.0's actually pretty nice these days and closer to Steam), but they're all playable.

Epic's launcher makes all of those look better than Steam. It's soooooooo slow and featureless. I've yet to actually boot a game in though, just collecting my free titles. But navigating around to do that has been crap.

I'm already in a world of multi-clients because of EA and Ubi, and I can wait for games to come to Steam eventually like Borderlands 3 will, plus I'll take free games anyway even if they're repeats just because the odd one is unique like City of Brass, but I really wish Epic would work on the fucking client. They update it as much as Valve does Steam (if you're in the betas) but it's mostly all on the backend. Even the web browser part of the client for the store is shitty. uPlay's come a long way but this thing is operating more like a bad Origin. Hell, I'd rather use battle.net. Why can't I show the library in a list instead of this format? Why does the "back" button not actually go back but takes you to the Store homepage? Why does it reload everything? Why are there barely any options for anything? Why does it notify you of new Unreal Engine versions if you don't have the UDK installed? What's the purpose of a lot of this when it opens it in a tab in your regular browser when you click?

Same here! Personally I understand smaller studio's wanting to get a guaranteed income.

Sadly, there are plenty of folks like me who have no intention of ever buying anything from the EGS. And by doing so, I might miss their next game and Epic will probably not give them a guaranteed income a second time?

But I'd have way more respect for some of these devs if they do it like Double Fine did it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cgEPoLxhmf8

They wanted to give us money, so we said yes. That's it! You don't need to shit on people who have no desire to use the EGS! You don't have to be a condescending prick talking down to folks who have no intention to use the store! You don't need to shit on folks who live in a country where the EGS is screwing you on currency.

Ooblets looks like a sweet and cute game. If it ever comes to Steam I'll probably still pick it up.

This is one of the most legitimate complaints about all this, along with promised Steam keys/pre-orders being canceled. The client is shit/hilariously barebones, but they'll get to it, some day...
Yeah, some devs are going to be defiant about their decision to go Epic exclusive or pretend it's not about the money to save face (?). Yet the conniptions people are having about this are embarrassing to me. Respect my authority as a customer? Chinese spy-store? Punish the devs who take the money? Pirate to show them what's for! Tim Sweeney wants to destroy PC gaming? It's all REEEEEEE to me.

Tim Schafer and Double Fine in general have done a lot to earn people's trust over the years through their transparency and overall frankness about their struggles/successes/etc.

a lot of Valve's goodwill comes from when they were the same way, hiring the mod teams for CS, TFC, etc., the way they presented the TF2 updates, etc. that's obviously shifted but they worked hard to also sell Steam when it was just Valve games still to people and then a few indies trickling in along with Rockstar/2K; that's diminished but Valve still holds goodwill from that

Epic's weirdly secretive nature and the way these announcements are coming out, especially when there's Kickstarters or worse, pre-orders open, already gets people questionable about it, but some teams like Obsidian can use their goodwill and sell it

it's funny in some ways because as much media handwringing about how Gamers are not appreciative and hostile towards developers and games journalists, certain groups of those parties are right back at it in the same way, which just fuels the cycle over and over

Epic's trying, but it's sorta ass-backwards to how Valve accomplished their store, Epic isn't really selling the platform yet as much as trying to grab users piecemeal (via Fortnite, via exclusives, etc.) while they get to establishing the user experience well down the road, just look at the Trello map (and the hints at how much manpower the client experience itself gets)

The best part is you can't really launch the games outside of it anymore. It doesn't have a background thing/temporary pop-up like every other launcher. Or even itself a year ago.

I'm more fascinated by the fact that they keep breaking the launcher but it often takes them days to fix it than I am ever upset about it. Valve ships out patches even at weird hours when it has these problems. I've even seen Ubi patch on a weekend.

They never used to outright break the launcher like this, even after Fortnite took off. But since the Store it's become even more of a mess.

They actually changed the Library order recently from having your installed games listed first and both groups then in alpha order, to having all games listed alphabetically no matter what.

And yes, it still refreshes pages every time. It's amazing how screwed up this thing still is. Even when the built in browser for Steam was half busted for like that whole year it wasn't this broken. :lol

One of these game launchers having Dropbox's LAN sync for the game files would be pretty hot. Especially Steam because my laptop is on Linux.

IIRC, both the Metro Redux's being free games were leaked back when the exclusive thing came around.

High Key. I think it's best from a gameplay standpoint, had the best enemy encounters etc. I liked the story too. City only edges it out as the best overall because City had some great set pieces and moments. Asylum is nice because it feels focused but the last third sucks. Knight is a gorgeous looking game that does way too much. Funny enough the Batgirl DLC is the exact kinda focused experience I think they were great at and need to return to for a full fledged game. The games are at their best when they playout like an intense, slightly scary TAS two parter.

Half the free games I have from EGS, after downloading and installing, I then have to download and install a separate client from the publisher, and then download and install the game again from that client.

:beli
So far the only 2 that I’ve got which do that are GTA5 and Watchdogs.

I really, really liked Where the Water Tastes like Wine. It was a huge flop and actually had a moderate budget for an indie project (they got Sting to voice hours and hours of dialogue + 16 writers and various artists).

It's a total mess of a "game", it's slow and if you try to "beat" you'll spend over 30+ hours. Better to just play what you feel like until you are good.

But as an otherworldy journey through the soul of past-time America it's probably the best game I've ever played to give that feel. Also the soundtrack is amazing. It's one of those games that I'm so glad exists even if it's not really a good game.

Very good read on it:
https://medium.com/@johnnemann/where-the-water-tastes-like-wine-postmortem-211a1f9d791a

Quote
Commercially, it’s a disaster. I can’t discuss exact numbers, but in the first few weeks fewer people bought the game than I have Twitter followers, and I don’t have a lot of Twitter followers (and this tells you a lot about how effective marketing via Twitter is).

So far, I have made $0 from the game. That may look like a high number, but consider that it took four years to make — that works out to approximately $0/year. Compared to the $120,000+/year salary of a 15-year veteran in a AAA studio, it begins to look a lot smaller! And then if I go into the hourly breakdown… I don’t have an actual count of hours spent making the game, but there was a lot of crunch that went into it, so I am guesstimating I made about $0/hour. That’s not a lot! And then once you factor in the ~$140,000 I spent paying my contractors and collaborators for the game, you begin to see that maybe it wasn’t, financially speaking, worth it. I guess I will have to wait a bit longer to buy that Juicero.

Joking aside — that’s dismal. And terrifying. At the end of the day it’s astounding that a game that got this much attention from the press, that won awards, that had an all-star cast of writers and performers, that had a bizarre celebrity guest appearance(!) failed this hard. It scares me.

I am going to be OK, at least for the moment. I don’t own a house, so I didn’t mortgage it to ship this game (being a millennial pays off!). I’m only responsible for myself, and I didn’t spend the last of my savings, plus I have marketable skills that I can hopefully use to keep myself fed in the future. I’m glad that I got to pay so many talented people for their skills, and that there were only a few folks getting paid through revenue share (there were a few, and I feel terrible about that). I am also very glad that many of the people who worked on this game are already using that fact and their experience to find other work with teams — if everyone else who worked on this ended up better for doing so, that’s a great reason to have made it.

I don't know about great as I think as the game went on it clearly did'nt know what to do with combat. It did'nt really want to be a shooter, but the stealth is also pretty meh. So I ended up having to just kind of brute force my way through. That said the game does still have a really nice vibe and San Fran is such a well realized place and great to be in. The characters are surprisingly pretty fun. There's not a lot of GTA 3 Urban city open world games now so WD2 is a good game to scratch that itch. It also does not feel like Ubisoft open world tedium. So I liked it.

Defense Grid is one of the best tower defense games ever.

Verdun actually has a mode where you sit in a frontline trench and fire at waves of bots coming across No Man's Land for high scores with random artillery strikes and chemical attacks (you need to put on your gas mask for these) everywhere, so very accurate to World War I gameplay. :lol It was the only mode with any players when I played it a few years back.

"Epic Games Store is unprofitable and not comparable to the App Store" the lawyers began, rather bluntly, "and will not be profitable for at least multiple years, if ever." Ouch!

But what's interesting is that Apple's legal eagles go on to break down just how unprofitable the Epic Games Store is. "Epic lost around $181 million on EGS in 2019. Epic projected to lose around $273 million on EGS in 2020. Indeed, Epic committed $444 million in minimum guarantees for 2020 alone, while projecting, even with 'significant' growth, only $401 million in revenue for that year. Epic acknowledges that trend will continue in the immediate future: Epic projects to lose around $139 million in 2021."

Yokus Island Express is free now, and is a really fucking good (and hugely under rated) game.

Its kind of like a mix of a metroidvania and pinball, but plays a lot better than that sounds, and is at a pricepoint you can't quibble about.

The highest praise I can give it is that it plays like a Nintendo experimental 2D platformer that goes on to become a cult classic.

https://www.epicgames.com/store/en-US/news/epic-games-achievements-are-launching-next-week
Quote
We’re excited to announce the initial rollout of the Epic Achievements system is on its way, including a set of tools for developers to activate platform Achievements quickly and easily. That means that starting next week, you can begin collecting XP by earning Epic Achievements in select games.

Over the last year, we’ve worked closely with some of our development partners to bring Epic Achievements to life. Thanks to their help, once we launch, you can start racking up XP in these games: Rocket League, Hades, Pillars of Eternity, Kena,  Zombie Army 4, Alan Wake Remastered, and more. We’re working to get these tools to more developers, so you can expect to see Epic Achievements popping up in your favorite games later this year.

How do XP and Epic Achievements work?
Epic Achievements are sorted into four tiers based on their XP value, with the Platinum Achievement being awarded upon earning 1000 XP in a game. Here are the Epic Achievement tiers and the amount of additional XP you get for the Achievement:

Bronze = 5-45 XP
Silver = 50-95 XP
Gold = 100-200 XP
Platinum = 250 XP

It's an Armored Core knock off that is only a few years old and still catches a good price. It's also a decent game if you're into that stuff.

Yeah so I was reading some stuff that basically I do that, and then I add the epic game library to my steam library, and then it should work....but it doesnt. When I go into the Fall Guys menu to assign actions to buttons, it doesnt accept them.

This is why PC gaming is such a fucking scam.

Steam controller shit only works if the steam overlay is enabled, and EGS games launched via egs disable the steam overlay. If you try and add them via steam as non steam games and explicitly setting the overlay in launch options, a lot of egs games then don't allow you to play multiplayer.
The workaround is to add EGS (while closed) as a non steam game, and then launch it via steam, and then launch via that steam enabled egs.

This is one of many reasons pc gamers got annoyed at the "ITS JUST A LAUNCHER BRO" bullshit - steam is basically the de facto gaming OS MS couldn't be fucked to make when they were trying to make everyone buy an xbox.

Ive read this seven times and I still dont understand.

 ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ???

And yeah the whole launcher thing is ridiculous.

WTF did I have to download and install the Epic store to be able to download and install the game and then that forced me to download and install updates

Ive read this seven times and I still dont understand.

1) shut down egs
2) add egs as a third party game inside steam
3) launch egs from steam, check steam overlay is working
4) you should now be able to launch games from the steam overlay enabled egs, and the steam overlay will persist allowing you to use your non-windows driver controller (also big picture mode if you use that)

1. Ok
2. The whole EGS or the specific game exe?
3. What do you mean by "check steam overlay is working"
Title: Re: Epic Game Store - The Other Free Game Thread

yeah, the whole egs - if you press shift+tab while browsing the egs you opened via steam, and the steam overlay pops up, you should be good.

adding specific egs games individually doesnt work right, you have to add the entire egs as a 'game' to get it working.

That might be what I did wrong, Ill try again tonight

Also, Im using my Wii U controller with this adapter:
https://smile.amazon.com/MAYFLASH-Bluetooth-Controller-Raspberry-Compatible/dp/B079B5KHWQ/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3G55NCNZRYI91&keywords=mayflash+ns2&qid=1657129840&s=electronics&sprefix=mayflash+ns%2Celectronics%2C76&sr=1-1

I got it to work within steam, but I was still being confused with the Nintendo button layout. I think Steam recognizes it as "generic" instead of "nintendo" so my A/B are reversed.

The game changer was discovering that I don't ever need to use a/s/d. Just push W to walk forward and then mouse for camera which changes the way I go.

Only issue has been on the hex-a-gone where I dont have the analog stick precision needed for jumping between the tiles

Darkwood is legit. I never finished it but these days when I get to like a dozen games a year, any game that actually gets me to play it for more than one session is solid or better.

It's pretty tough, which is why I didn't finish it since it requires a lot of commitment. It's also a bit repetitive in that you repeat day after day while exploring the same areas and pushing out and scavenging further. But the ambiance is fucking great. Up there with quality Silent Hill stuff. Very creepy, so play it in the dark.

Would like to finish it someday. I think when I dropped it I skimmed some playthroughs for the rest and seemed neat but also pretty hard and a lot of effort to get there and through it.

Know nothing about Toejam remake but will grab for free.

It's one of those situations where they've replaced all versions of it with the newer version, the Director's Cut is the only version they sell now. Similar to how a couple weeks ago when they gave out Saints Row IV it was Re-Elected.
