SNK has released a brand new trailer for their upcoming 2D fighting title, Samurai Shodown. In the showcase, we're given a fresh look at gameplay featuring several of the game's playable characters.(https://media.eventhubs.com/images/2019/03/25_samsho01.jpg)
Additionally, a more narrowed down release window for this game was provided. Samurai Shodown launches on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in June, on Nintendo Switch in Q4, and PC at a later date.
Samurai Shodown takes place in the late 18th century, after the events of Samurai Shodown V and before the original Samurai Shodown game. We'll be seeing 16 characters at launch: 13 returning warriors, such as Haohmaru, Earthquake and Galford, as well as three brand new characters.
SNK has confirmed that Samurai Shodown will be seeing the addition of DLC characters post-launch.
Samurai Shodown will come equipped with several game modes for players to enjoy, including Story, Practice, Online Battle and multiple offline battle modes. The upcoming title will also debut an "innovative new asynchronous online mode" entitled “Dojo” that creates a CPU-avatar with the ability to learn from players’ actions during offline modes and creates a Ghost AI character using deep machine learning.
Players can upload their Ghost to the leaderboards and also download Ghost data from other players. You'll be able to face Ghosts in 1v1 battle, or jump into the Ironman Challenge and attempt to take down up to 100 ghosts in one run.
Hopefully this plays as good as KoFXIV.

looks fine to me visually? I mean KoFXIV looks fine these days after the upgrades. For a small studio SNK's doing alright imo.
I have no idea why or how anyone could find this ugly. Its aesthetics are great. Really need to see Ukyo in action.
Too much sexualization :exxy :exxy :exxy :exxy :exxy :exxy
What?
No. The 3D is garbage, poison, radioactive.
They are hurting the legacy of Samurai Shodown with this release. Fuck them.

Yeah, I mean it's okay ultimately, I was just kinda hoping you know HD 2D for this series coming back. Especially with all these exposed femoral arteries.
She is armed with a very large saw blade. It apparently has some "secrets" that the developers weren't ready to talk about right now.
There appears to be a sailor theme involved with Darli. A pirate icon is plastered on her giant blade and she is wearing a bandanna.
Darli was also described as "the most badass in ship right to ever sail the seven seas." Notably, she's apparently really popular among the developer team as she has some cool moves to work with.
She is actually not a pirate!
She was saved as a child by a gang of pirates, but is actually the leader of a group of female shipbuilders.
They teased that she is the only character with something "special" when she is disarmed.:thinking :thinking :thinking
New character #1 is a pirate named....Darli Dagger.
I'm interested in using her.
Btw, on the fatalities discussion earlier, I hope they add the big blood spouts from the 2d ones. I saw a part in one of the trailers where the last hit cuts the other player in half but there was no blood and it looked really shitty. SS doesn't need gore or anything, but it does need the huge spouts of blood and slow motion impact pauses because that's sorta what makes SS visually unique.
Yeah, this is definitely the next fighter I buy at full price.spoiler (click to show/hide)And play for a week because I have no one to play against and am always busy playing single player stuff in my gaming time[close]
Bork, you're a long time SNK fan, are you excited? Game looks very promising.
Art of Fighting was pretty dope too.
KOF didn't have those crazy super moves that ripped the opponents' clothes to bits though.spoiler (click to show/hide)Yuri :drool[close]
SNK announced that SS is coming out on 6/25 for 'Murica.
SNK has also announced that if you purchase the game (physical and digital versions!) anytime between now and 6/30, you will get the season pass for FREE, which includes the four currently-unrevealed DLC characters!
:rejoice
Showing 'em how it's done.
:ufup
so which platform is going to have the most population for this game? Ps4 or xbox?
omg, the loading and optimization on ps4 for this game is so bad.
The core gameplay is great, but idk how long I'm gonna make it with these loads. I hope they can patch it, otherwise PC version gonna be waaaaaay better and worth the double dip down the line.
Yeah, I would not expect a good switch port given how it runs on PS4 :lol
It's been aaaaaaaaaaaaaages since I played SamSho 1/2 but this system of basically supers being available instantly (basically every move is available from the start of a round since you can rage burst with 0 rage meter and still do a lightning attack or QCF+M+H mini-super) is really interesting and definite goes with the atypical fighting game feel the series has always had.
I still love how potent standard slashes are and you can seriously win matches using just like one button and moving around if your timing is good. I don't play Haomaru but his HS reach is still insaaaane. I used to main Ukyo and Genjuro and Hanzo mostly. Ukyo feels good here but his flaming flying swallow is pretty hard to connect. Genjuro seems a bit slower than I remember and haven't messed with Hanzo much here.
Yeah, that's too long loading for a fighting game.
Single player seems even worse, like survival you sit and wait a few seconds to load the next fighter each time and story mode has a lot of loading.
It feels like a PS1 fighting game load times, I haven't played any fighter in a while with this long of loading. I gotta imagine Steam version on an SSD is like instant no loading which would be so much better.
So I don't really follow competitive fighting games much anymore, but I'm seeing all these 100% combos and crazy unblockables already coming out for this game. Does that mean the game is broken af if they don't patch things?
loading times on all those games is too long tbh. tekken is especially long, even on a rematch. it's stupid. ps4 tekken is really horrendous though, feel bad for anyone who uses that as their main setup.
Will have to check these out- only played training and online.
PC just spoils everyone. I never messed with NeoCD but remember awful PS1 days.
I haven’t minded the loading too much in SamSho aside from maybe arcade mode. Also I like the frog. :doge
Main gripes so far are being stuck in the dojo for time attack/ survival/etc. and the lack of blood when Ukyo coughs.
In preparation for my EVO viewing, what are the aspects of this game that make it resonate so strongly with players? I'm curious about why this game seems so popular.
Interesting, thank you. I'm not a hardcore fighting fan so forgive me, but I never even heard of the series until the latest game (and I've heard of some obscure fighters.) It's odd that it escaped my notice for so long.
People are sick of combos now?
So it's the DOOM 2016 of fighting games? :thinking

:crazy :mindblown
It's so weird reading that. :lol This game was pretty big for a time in the early-mid 90s and the first game got released on SNES, Genesis, Gameboy, Game Gear, Sega CD, and 3DO back in the day. Plus they re-released it in compilations on PS2, Wii, and PSP and versions have popped on on XBLA and PSN for 360 and PS3. More recently there's versions of the older games on PS4, Xbone, PC, and Switch!
You're not the only one who said this to me- I told a co-worker about it and he bought it last weekend. He was gushing all about it yesterday and told me he'd never heard of the game before. Dude is maybe early 30s? I guess I can see it being before some people's times.People are sick of combos now?
SS has always been like this. They did add some canned combos to SS4 (and a few of the later ones), but for the most part, it's never been a combo-heavy title. The new game has a very "old school" feel in this regard. I absolutely love them for going this route with it. I needed a new fighting game to get hooked on. SNK Heroines was a novelty, SC6 fell off a lot for me (would like to play it more though), DOA6 was kind of a disappointment with how they handled things, and MK11 I shouldn't have even bothered with.

A lot of people didn't care for Samurai Shodown 6, but I really enjoyed it. Yeah, yeah, no blood. Didn't care- it was awesome having pretty much the entire cast of SS1-5, plus a few new additions, in one game. Can't think of too many other fighting games where you can fight in front of the white house. Maybe Martial Champion? LOL.

SamSho has traditionally been mishandled in the west, arguably overall.
SS1 was ported everywhere with varying levels of success, but it broke through and was as popular as it deserved to be. SS2 was a great follow up, reviewed great and had good distribution, but SNK decided to try and capitalize on it as an exclusive to move hardware. I'm sure it worked somewhat in Japan, but in the US it relegated them to niche territory.
Even though it was only released like a year or so later, SS3 came (out at least here) with zero hype, and it made very little impact...reviews I remember being pretty middling. I actually liked SS3, but it was definitely a departure from 2 (believe it was a new team?). Total change of tone and was pretty janky/felt rushed.
They actually ported this one, the Saturn port was pretty good with the ram cart but the PS1 port was expectedly dire. SNK wasn't even going to bring it over, Sony did to bolster their library/get nerd cred. Issue was the target audience had already imported, same vicious cycle deal as all 2D ports in the US, which eventually stopped. On top of this this 3D fighters were at this point passe in the mainstream...I remember getting into an argument with someone that claimed Toshinden was superior. :-\
4 was fantastic IMO, but the series was dead in the US. I only saw a few places that had it, but generally on busted MVS cabs. This is kind of the point where arcades were dying and everyone was just playing at home anyway. I played the shit out of the import Saturn rev tho.
The fact that we get at least one more good one makes me happy, and I am glad it's getting the attention that it is. I hope it goes on a few seasons.

When I finally got to play VI it felt too much like mugen or something. :lol
Anyone want to play some online matches? Haven't touched this since the first day or two and been itching to get back and play some MP.

The game developer SNK has announced that Samurai Shodown (or Samurai Spirits) have topped 40,606 units sold in Japan. The units include the 30,179 physical copies and 10,427 digital copies. And to celebrate such milestone, SNK will release a FREE Samurai Shodown theme for PlayStation this mid-July in Japan.

Whaaaaaat. My 7-11s and stuff never had arcade games wtf, yours did?

In the 80s they did... I distinctly remember playing Rastan at one.
I still haven't used anyone other than Ukyo and one run with Nakoruru in story mode :lol
I need to try some of these other characters.
What do you like about Nakoruru? I liked the movement options but her range with her sword and her damage is really small which throws me off.
And yeah, Yoshitora feels annoying to play against because his moves have huge fucking range and huge fucking damage. I had a match against the guy on the raven guy (who I feel like 50% of online players use) and we did like 10 rematches because they were good matches. When I played a Yoshitora guy I did one rematch out of courtesy and then got the fuck out because it was just annoying fighting that guy.
I just realized that a bunch of SS games are on the Switch. I'd like to play one on my commutes. Which one do you guys feel plays most similar to the new one?
Yeah I'm not a tier junkie, just find it morbidly funny that my fav character was designated as trash so early.
It's been revealed that Shizumaru Hisame will be coming to Samurai Shodown as a free DLC fighter in September 2019.
In addition to this, gameplay was shown for Rimururu, Basara, Kazuki Kazama, and Wan-Fu. Remember that these fighters will be releasing in August, October, November, and December of 2019.
The upcoming combatant, Shizumaru Hisame, first appeared in Samurai Shodown 3. One of his cinematic attacks has him using an umbrella to shield himself from the opponent's raining blood.
SNK still had more announcements to make. Clearly they've been very busy.
The first character that will be part of Samurai Shodown's Season 2 pack in 2020 has also been revealed. Mina Majikina apparently came in first place for the Samurai Shodown DLC character popularity poll.
Three other silhouettes were also present. These images appear to be placeholders as they all looked exactly the same. Still, this does tell us that there will be at least 4 combatants joining Samurai Shodown via season 2.
God I need this game
Rimururu is way better than I was expecting, pretty varied moveset with a trollish/Yuri amount of uguu. Kind of surprised considering I never liked her much in the old games.
They also added in an SS3ish winter stage! :jeb
Ok, so the deal with me and online in MP games is I like playing online against friends whether irl friends or internet realm friends,
but while playing against random strangers is ok, since I don't know these people and I don't use voice chat or anything it just feels like playing a cpu on a high setting if I'm not that good and everything is better than me. I think being able to chat and talk about stuff while playing is a big deal for me. It's why I don't mind playing with strangers in FF14 since I'm on a kb+m and chatting while we do dungeons and stuff.
I also don't have a lot of internet friends. Just like you guys, so it's hard for me to play with people I know. I'm down to play with any of ya if we set times like a day before so I can make sure I'm free. I'm west coast and I know some of you are east coast so it's tough for weeknights.
A big balance patch has been released- GENJURO AND YOSHITORA NERFS! Shiki and Kyoshiro better now! Darli buffs!

What about Galford?
When did this come out? There is a Ukyo and Nako one as well.
I didn't think the standard minis came with all the old samshos?

Our original review called the Neo Geo Mini arcade-style retro console “cute, but an imperfect nostalgia trip.” The Samurai Shodown limited edition, released this week to celebrate the latest entry in the long-running fighting game series, is exactly that, but it comes with more stuff and looks so much nicer
Joystick Mode
In this mode, you can use the arcade stick normally by simply plugging it into a NEOGEO mini or PC. We guarantee a solid experience with this arcade stick.
Console Mode
In this mode, simply connect the stick via an HDMI cable into a TV and get ready to enjoy some of SNK’s finest fighting games. There are 20 pre-installed NEOGEO classics just waiting to be played. You can even rearrange the button layout in the options menu. Also, you can attach NEOGEO mini PAD controllers or even another NEOGEO Arcade Stick Pro for some glorious 2-Player action!

Looks great! Nice to see a non-shitty port from them on Switch after SNK Heroines.
Kazuki is awesome, they nailed it.
It's already confirmed to be 60 FPS and not a shit port like SNK Heroines was. We're good. :pimpPosted in two threads cuz too sweet!

I feel like it has to be intentional. It sounds too much like it.
Why does the trailer music sound like the feudal-Japanese version of DMX's "Ruff Ryders' Anthem?" :lol
Choooo. Does it include pass for S1?
Yeah I wouldn't consider a switch port primary rev for something like this, would be CPU/dojo fights onry (not like I go online a lot anyway).
Is the loading any faster than PS4 rev?
Iroha plays well but is the shittiest character/design in samsho history. MASTER LETS GO FOR A WALK.
All are good additions gameplay wise I think, although I expected a soul cali crossover? I want Voldo. :lol
Stadia logo and no mention of PC/Steam :-\
Are they not doing a season pass 2? On phone but not seeing it on PS store.
*edit - see on reddit/twit that SP delayed slightly. May be cheaper to wait. :doge

grab Mina now
I don't get the shockbox for a compilation. I wonder what the premium is on that thing.
Even in docked mode the Switch version doesn't have this? Meh.
Sup Bork
It's a shame about the switch version...
Reddit post said that the collection will have crossplay between Epic and Steam. The source tweet for this does not exist, however.
:thinking
Taking that with a grain of salt, but awesome if true.

hope it's true, excited to try this
loading isn't as good as it should be (better than PS4 but that's not saying much) and there seems to be a bit of screen tearing :lol
like having it on PC though FINALLY
I'm so hyped to get this for consoles in July.
is the collection not available for pre-orders or something digitally? i couldn't find it yesterday :doge
edit: July 28th for $39.99 :phil
not trying to gripe too much about another free character added, but feels like this and warden should have been free in first place. assuming this is it S2 was way weaker than S1.
Bruh who the fuck is hitting the special moves in these games :lol :lol :lol What kind of vile scumbag would come up with these inputs :jeanluc
Hope this is better online than the PC version. :dizzy

Does any fighting game have good online anymore?
I feel like people complain about online is every fighting game there is this gen.

You're not wrong! :lol
But I'm not even talking about matches on PC- I never even got into one! That's how broken it is or was. I gave up after a week. Good thing it was free!
look again :lol
I need to stop fucking around and buy Samurai 2019.
“I’m proud to announce we’re bringing a character from The Last Blade into the Samurai Shodown Season Pass 3,” Samurai Shodown director Hayato Konya said in a special video message.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QhWBkBHzQy8
SNK producer Yasuyuki Oda added, “Wow! It’s that old fogey, Genbu no Okina, right?”
Konya responded, “Nope! Actually, they’re someone the fans absolutely adore! Of course, we’re also balancing and adjusting the game as well. You guys are really gonna love it!”
Cool, always made sense given how similar the series are.
It's amazing! Too bad online and loading kinda sucks, but really solid and probably 2nd fave fighter of the gen after T7.I'm hoping that the next gen update will lessen the load times on Series X and PS5.
