Samurai Shodown comes to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in June, Nintendo Switch and PC releases launching later

Quote
SNK has released a brand new trailer for their upcoming 2D fighting title, Samurai Shodown. In the showcase, we're given a fresh look at gameplay featuring several of the game's playable characters.
Additionally, a more narrowed down release window for this game was provided. Samurai Shodown launches on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in June, on Nintendo Switch in Q4, and PC at a later date.

Samurai Shodown takes place in the late 18th century, after the events of Samurai Shodown V and before the original Samurai Shodown game. We'll be seeing 16 characters at launch: 13 returning warriors, such as Haohmaru, Earthquake and Galford, as well as three brand new characters.

SNK has confirmed that Samurai Shodown will be seeing the addition of DLC characters post-launch.

Samurai Shodown will come equipped with several game modes for players to enjoy, including Story, Practice, Online Battle and multiple offline battle modes. The upcoming title will also debut an "innovative new asynchronous online mode" entitled “Dojo” that creates a CPU-avatar with the ability to learn from players’ actions during offline modes and creates a Ghost AI character using deep machine learning.

Players can upload their Ghost to the leaderboards and also download Ghost data from other players. You'll be able to face Ghosts in 1v1 battle, or jump into the Ironman Challenge and attempt to take down up to 100 ghosts in one run.

I don't think we have to worry about this.   :)

The only thing I'm concerned about right now is how the Switch port will turn out.  Hopefully they learned from SNK Heroines, but who knows.

Meter system seems to be traditional SamSho. But you’ve got a super but an ultra RAGE that consumes your meter once used as well. Doesn’t seem to have fatalities like V, and that’s disappointing.

So Virtua Fighter 4. Cool. Very cool.

I mean...KOF XIV was jokingly referred to as a Playstation 2 game when they first showed it off.   :lol  The final product turned out better, but sure, it's not the best-looking fighting game out there.  That's OK though.  I'm not getting this for the graphics and no one who will play this long-term will either.

This doesn’t look as bad as KOFXIV though. And it certainly doesn’t look ps2 like how XIV did. More last gen and that’s fine. Fighters are expensive. GGXrd and UMVC3 were last gen and they look great, as does this.

What?

No. The 3D is garbage, poison, radioactive.

They are hurting the legacy of Samurai Shodown with this release. Fuck them.

He's kidding.

They hurt SS already with a super shitty PS1 game almost 20 years ago and then again with Send in 2008, which killed the series for a decade.  This looks good and easily the best new SS in a long time

Day one. This looks amazing, not huge on the delayed PC release but eh. Really like that it's still so methodical, a whiff means you likely lose a quarter bar.

Art style is a bit off IMO, but it kinda fits the aesthetic of the older games more than something with cleaner lines would. Looks pretty close to SFIV. 3D done properly opens up possibility of some cool stuff, like more defensive options and hype flair like that Nakoruru finisher  :o

*edit* kinda  :'( they are holding back a lot of the roster from part 3. Basara and Shizumaru were my mains. Imagine at least one of them and Rimururu will be included as DLC.

Doesn't look too horrible, and a big step up over KOF XIV. I just wish that SNK would've given us a hi-res 2D game like KOF XIII, even if it's a one-off.

She is armed with a very large saw blade. It apparently has some "secrets" that the developers weren't ready to talk about right now.

There appears to be a sailor theme involved with Darli. A pirate icon is plastered on her giant blade and she is wearing a bandanna.

Darli was also described as "the most badass in ship right to ever sail the seven seas." Notably, she's apparently really popular among the developer team as she has some cool moves to work with.

She was saved as a child by a gang of pirates, but is actually the leader of a group of female shipbuilders.

Btw, on the fatalities discussion earlier, I hope they add the big blood spouts from the 2d ones. I saw a part in one of the trailers where the last hit cuts the other player in half but there was no blood and it looked really shitty. SS doesn't need gore or anything, but it does need the huge spouts of blood and slow motion impact pauses because that's sorta what makes SS visually unique.

Pretty pumped!  While I like KOF, TBH apart from '98 and 2002 it's not exactly my all-time favorite SNK series.  Samurai Shodown and Fatal Fury are.  So I'm really happy to see them finally doing something else apart from KOF and it being a Samurai Shodown game...that looks good!  2008's Sen was a massive disappointment and this looks to shit on it in every way possible. :hyper

Glad most of the comeback mechanics are only good once a match. If netcode is bad this game will be infuriating to so many people.  :lol

TBH though I have never really considered SamSho a particularly great VS fighter even though it was one of my faves. It can be super jank to play...I love how matches are kind of inconsistent and have wild swings based on the massive damage, but could never get anyoneto really play it much with me. Really curious as to what the real reception is once it's released, but it's getting way more hype than I expected it to.

Also pretty hype for the upcoming collection assuming it's done well. What a time to be alive.

SNK announced that SS is coming out on 6/25 for 'Murica.

SNK has also announced that if you purchase the game (physical and digital versions!) anytime between now and 6/30, you will get the season pass for FREE, which includes the four currently-unrevealed DLC characters!

:rejoice

Showing 'em how it's done.
:ufup

Free season pass is cool. Was Day 1 anyhow to support this, but nice to get 4 extra characters for free as well.

PS4 is the go-to platform for fighting games.

Really hoping for Basara but I’d be ok with any of those. I liked Kazuki/Sogetsu but having both may be a bit lazy. So it’s definitely likely.   :lol

Marked the hell out when I started the tutorial and it started playing the Kuroko stage music from SS2.  Looks fucking GREAT, too.  Leagues better than KOF14.  WOW.

Yup; messed with the demo on Friday.  You can really feel the input lag, but I didn't let it bother me since they reduced it a lot for the final build.   :)

It was still pretty awesome regardless.  Am hyped, hope the online is good, and hope this game takes off.

PSA: season pass is free to everyone if you grab it within 5 days it seems, even if you don’t have the game yet.

Game is awesome, played a few matches online with Tam Tam and destroyed, but that is 100% people not being familiar with the game and no one picking him I would imagine. Game just vibes, its like a remake of part 1 with the knowledge of the rest of the series.

The last boss was lol then ugh, so a total SNK boss. Did not beat yet, will try again tomorrow.

Well this BE THE AWESOME.  Old-school style goodness.  This is not a combo-heavy title at all and is very easy to pick up and play.  Net code is overall pretty good from the matches I've played.  I like that when spectating matches, you have 16 different sound effects (cheers, jeers, applause, boos, taiko drums, etc.) you can play and makes it feel like a wrestling match or something, lol.

If you're even remotely interested in this game, make sure to go onto PSN and get the season pass- it's currently free for a few days!

So far am doing the best with Kyoshiro and Charlotte.   Absolutely suck with Shiki.  I like Darli but am already sick of playing against so many of her online.  :doge

see edit above, TAM TAM is awesome but strange. I haven't even tried the new people yet, really just looking around and getting the feel of it. I am really liking the simplicity of it. could feel more tension later on vs CPU, imagine that is what decent level play will be like vs just spamming.

hope it's a hit and is supported for a while, but even if not I am loving it. aside from ringu  ::)

Took a look at the roster though. Generally good although 2 of my old-school mains are missing  :'( both the greens are out. What do they have against Green characters?

Boomerang girl Cham-Cham & claw-man spinning blanka Genan. Oh well. At least most of the rest of the SS1/2 seem to have made it in. I only really played SS1 & SS2 regularly and left the series around 3/4 (still played a bit, but just casually) so I mostly care about the original cast. Looks like Genan is the only missing character from SS1 roster and Cham-Cham, Neinhalt and Nicotine are the only missing SS2 characters.

omg, the loading and optimization on ps4 for this game is so bad.

The core gameplay is great, but idk how long I'm gonna make it with these loads. I hope they can patch it, otherwise PC version gonna be waaaaaay better and worth the double dip down the line.

On PS4 yeah it does seem to chug a bit. still awesome overall, will more than likely wade in online more this weekend. Def would have rathered it on PC as well but what can you do. I think a switch port may be great for it, assuming they can make it work.

I also miss Gen-an, he would have been great in 3D, they did a great job with almost everyone.
Title: Re: SAMURAI SHODOWN!!!!
Post by: Bebpo on June 26, 2019, 10:54:04 PM
Yeah, I would not expect a good switch port given how it runs on PS4  :lol

It's been aaaaaaaaaaaaaages since I played SamSho 1/2 but this system of basically supers being available instantly (basically every move is available from the start of a round since you can rage burst with 0 rage meter and still do a lightning attack or QCF+M+H mini-super) is really interesting and definite goes with the atypical fighting game feel the series has always had. I still love how potent standard slashes are and you can seriously win matches using just like one button and moving around if your timing is good. I don't play Haomaru but his HS reach is still insaaaane. I used to main Ukyo and Genjuro and Hanzo mostly. Ukyo feels good here but his flaming flying swallow is pretty hard to connect. Genjuro seems a bit slower than I remember and haven't messed with Hanzo much here.

Not really sure what this means.  Is there something else not working well for you besides loading?

That type of burst has been in the other games, BTW.  If you use it, you lose your meter completely...so gotta be careful!

Yes- it's funny how this game feeling like classic SamSho now makes it stand out quite a bit from all the other fighting games out there.  It's a lot slower than everything else and a few well-placed slashes can win a round.  It's very old-school in that it's much less about combos and much more about movement/spacing and timing.  It's a pretty turtle-friendly game and has great defensive options with the dodges and parries.  I can tell who is used to SS and who has no idea how to play it when I go online- have massacred some people pretty easily already.  Kicking all kinds of ass with Charlotte.  She has great pokes/reach and her sliding throw really throws people off.

Just perfected a guy doing nothing but simple cross-ups :rofl  It's hard to believe how clueless some players are when they can't mash out combos.

Loading for me is about 14-15 seconds per match and 2-3 seconds for rematches, BTW.
Title: Re: SAMURAI SHODOWN!!!!
Post by: Bebpo on June 27, 2019, 01:11:39 AM
Yeah, that's too long loading for a fighting game. Single player seems even worse, like survival you sit and wait a few seconds to load the next fighter each time and story mode has a lot of loading.

It feels like a PS1 fighting game load times, I haven't played any fighter in a while with this long of loading. I gotta imagine Steam version on an SSD is like instant no loading which would be so much better.

So I don't really follow competitive fighting games much anymore, but I'm seeing all these 100% combos and crazy unblockables already coming out for this game. Does that mean the game is broken af if they don't patch things?

Double or even triple this and you have PS1 load times for a lot of games back then.  14-15 seconds is fine.  Not saying it's the best ever, but it's not long.  I just recently slapped a new faster SSD into my laptop and booted up SFV- took 12 seconds to get into a match.   Tekken 7 took 14 seconds.  DOA6 took 8 seconds.  SC6 took 12 seconds.  So it's generally on par with most games.

So I don't really follow competitive fighting games much anymore, but I'm seeing all these 100% combos and crazy unblockables already coming out for this game. Does that mean the game is broken af if they don't patch things?

...It just came out less than two days ago!   :lol  Nobody knows what the hell is going on right now- people don't even know if certain characters are crap or just "difficult to learn" yet.

If anything that actually works outside of training stuff with settings changed up, they'll patch it.

loading times on all those games is too long tbh. tekken is especially long, even on a rematch. it's stupid. ps4 tekken is really horrendous though, feel bad for anyone who uses that as their main setup.

I wish they were all Jacky I've got hands of lightning fast, but I can wait like 15 seconds for a match.  I remember the days of 30+ second load times...or worse.  NeoGeo CD will do that to you.

PC just spoils everyone. I never messed with NeoCD but remember awful PS1 days.

I haven’t minded the loading too much in SamSho aside from maybe arcade mode. Also I like the frog. :doge

Main gripes so far are being stuck in the dojo for time attack/ survival/etc. and the lack of blood when Ukyo coughs.

Yeah, I think the difference is that I don't play online much so all my time with SamSho has been in arcade/story mode and the loading is pretty rough there.

Also story mode is fucking long, so the load times just make it feel even longer. Took me like 15 mins to get to the final boss not skipping cutscenes/intros which is a lot for a simple arcade mode run. Also got to the final boss with Nakoruru who I don't know how to play and who does very small damage and yeah could not beat that boss. Got to phase 2 but my damage output was tiny and damage incoming was a loooot.

One thing I didn't notice at first is how the characters get more bloody as the round goes. This is cool and I don't think I've seen it done this well in any other fighters. The dismemberment kills look stupid, but the standing blood spray looks pretty good.
Title: Re: SAMURAI SHODOWN!!!!
Post by: Akala on June 27, 2019, 08:13:29 PM
Dismemberment only looks terrible on Earthquake.  :lol

2nd Phase of the boss sucks, I can see the patterns but am not quick enough to dodge.

One thing I really like about this game is how rewarding it is to FG fundamentals. I think spending some time in training versus mid-hard level CPU and just practicing defense for a bit will pay dividends.

1. Been a long, long time since there was a new Samurai Shodown game released- The last one was in 2008!

2. Been an even longer time since there was a new *good* Samurai Shodown game released- 2008's Sen, which was like a bad Soul Calibur clone, SUCKED.

3. The game to me doesn't really feel all that different than say, Samurai Shodown V Special (from 2003!), but the thing is....nowadays there's really nothing else like it out there because of the way it plays.  It's not combo-oriented at all.  Spacing and footsies are king.

I wouldn’t say people are necessarily sick of combos, but a lot of fighters can feel kinda samey. This one is different from most of what comes out these days, just feels meaty and old school...it’s that gum you like coming back in style.  :lol

I’m sure at least some of it is nostalgia, curious to see reactions from non-FG people.

It's so weird reading that.  :lol  This game was pretty big for a time in the early-mid 90s and the first game got released on SNES, Genesis, Gameboy, Game Gear, Sega CD, and 3DO back in the day.  Plus they re-released it in compilations on PS2, Wii, and PSP and versions have popped on on XBLA and PSN for 360 and PS3.  More recently there's versions of the older games on PS4, Xbone, PC, and Switch!

You're not the only one who said this to me- I told a co-worker about it and he bought it last weekend.  He was gushing all about it yesterday and told me he'd never heard of the game before.  Dude is maybe early 30s?  I guess I can see it being before some people's times.

People are sick of combos now?

SS has always been like this.  They did add some canned combos to SS4 (and a few of the later ones), but for the most part, it's never been a combo-heavy title.  The new game has a very "old school" feel in this regard.  I absolutely love them for going this route with it.  I needed a new fighting game to get hooked on.  SNK Heroines was a novelty, SC6 fell off a lot for me (would like to play it more though), DOA6 was kind of a disappointment with how they handled things, and MK11 I shouldn't have even bothered with.

Looking into the series more, I've seen the *characters* pop up in places, but I didn't know what they were from. This might also just be me, but "Samurai Showdown" sounds a bit generic and has a hard time sticking in my mind. The hype I see from all corners is what made me take another look.  I definitely understand the appeal better now.

Whether Samurai Showdown is a household name depends on how much time you spent in bowling alleys between 1990-1995.

Whether Samurai Showdown is a household name depends on how much time you spent in bowling alleys between 1990-1995.

Heh- that is where I first played it!   :lol

But it was in every single arcade in my area, too, and was quite popular.  There was usually that one game that made everybody queue up and SS was that game for a while in '93 and '94.  I remember everyone waiting to play the game when some random dude walks in, tells everyone that a local mall arcade just got Samurai Shodown II, and everybody ran out and jumped into their cars to go drive down there.   :lol

Although SS2 was the better game in pretty much every way, I don't remember it being as popular as SS1 was.  It not not getting a home version at the time may have something to do with it- there was a period of time where SNK decided against letting anyone port their games to other platforms -apparently after enough complaints from NeoGeo owners were received- so some stuff from '94 never saw release on anything else until like a decade later.

I saw SS3 in one arcade (in another state!) and that was it.  Already had the Saturn port or the Neo CD port of it by that point so didn't care.

SS4 brought people back to it, but it still didn't reach SS1 levels.  And that was it.  A couple of years later, I found an arcade that had one of the Hyper NeoGeo 64 games, but the machine was dead, lol.  Didn't see a new SS game in an arcade until SS6 in 2005 in Japan.  Then Sen came out and just sucked all kinds of ass.  What made things worse is that Sen was developed by former Tenchu devs K2, who in turn were formed by ex-SNK staff who had worked on the original SS games.  No idea how they fucked it up.

I have yet to play either Hyper NeoGeo 64 SS game.  Guess I should check the state of emulation for that stuff.  The PS1 "Warrior's Rage 2" game that was not really like those games, IIRC, also sucked ass.  But the NeoGeo Pocket Color Samurai Shodown! 2 was basically a scaled down 2D version of those games and was pretty fun to play.

A lot of people didn't care for Samurai Shodown 6, but I really enjoyed it.  Yeah, yeah, no blood.  Didn't care- it was awesome having pretty much the entire cast of SS1-5, plus a few new additions, in one game.  Can't think of too many other fighting games where you can fight in front of the white house.  Maybe Martial Champion?  LOL.

SamSho has traditionally been mishandled in the west, arguably overall.

SS1 was ported everywhere with varying levels of success, but it broke through and was as popular as it deserved to be. SS2 was a great follow up, reviewed great and had good distribution, but SNK decided to try and capitalize on it as an exclusive to move hardware. I'm sure it worked somewhat in Japan, but in the US it relegated them to niche territory.

Even though it was only released like a year or so later, SS3 came (out at least here) with zero hype, and it made very little impact...reviews I remember being pretty middling. I actually liked SS3, but it was definitely a departure from 2 (believe it was a new team?). Total change of tone and was pretty janky/felt rushed. They actually ported this one, the Saturn port was pretty good with the ram cart but the PS1 port was expectedly dire. SNK wasn't even going to bring it over, Sony did to bolster their library/get nerd cred. Issue was the target audience had already imported, same vicious cycle deal as all 2D ports in the US, which eventually stopped. On top of this this 3D fighters were at this point passe in the mainstream...I remember getting into an argument with someone that claimed Toshinden was superior.  :-\

4 was fantastic IMO, but the series was dead in the US. I only saw a few places that had it, but generally on busted MVS cabs. This is kind of the point where arcades were dying and everyone was just playing at home anyway. I played the shit out of the import Saturn rev tho.

Series continued on in Japan more or less for another ten yearsish but word of mouth was mediocre to where I never cared enough to get past the barrier of entry (I didn't really import past PS1/Saturn). I mean aside from V Special which was pretty much off limits unless you had a console and a rare copy. I only got to play recently...but that  while it's awesome it's old.

The fact that we get at least one more good one makes me happy, and I am glad it's getting the attention that it is. I hope it goes on a few seasons.

SNK keeping their games NeoGeo-only was an absolutely baffling decision.  It must have been due to the Playstation and Saturn releases, but yeah...if they thought their NeoGeo CD would somehow be able to compete with them...lol.  Just...lol.  I mean, I loved having a Neo CDZ back in the day and had like 50+ games for it.   But it was clearly a niche system.

Also to note, SNK tried some other genres with their IPs, but we never got those in English, either- Samurai Shodown and KOF both had RPGs.  The Samurai RPG was pretty good- had very nice sprites, art, and music, and multiple playable characters/stories.  You selected a main character and got other characters to join your party (except for Genjuro- he fights alone and can hit multiple enemies at once to make up for it), then went through the stories of either SS1 or SS2.  The Neo CD version also had a little bonus extra mini story where you played as Shizumaru from SS3.   :)

Yeah- SNK had a thing around this time where the third game in every series would be very different from the previous versions.  Not necessarily a bad thing, but I can't think of a single game that people thought was better than the previous one overall.  Generally it took a follow-up to 'fix' things.  See also- KOF '96, Fatal Fury 3, and Art Of Fighting 3 (which never got another game, but the same team made the infinitely better Last Blade 1+2 plus Garou MOTW).

The PS1 port was the biggest piece of shit at the time.  Just a complete travesty of a release.  KOF '95 PS1 wasn't that much better and of course these were the games that Sony released.  They bombed, and we didn't get much else from SNK on the PS1 in 'Murica until a few years later.  Most of their PS1 games never released outside of Japan IIRC, which sucks because some of their ports weren't bad for the time.  Samurai Shodown IV was much better than III and despite missing frames, played smoothly.  It even had Cham-Cham added in Vs. mode.  And then Real Bout Special Dominated Mind was absolutely fantastic and was its own Fatal Fury entry- more than just a port.  But nobody knew about it.

This reminds me that Sony had kind of an anti-2D sprite game stance for a while and we missed a lot of good games in English because of that dumb shit.

That was 1996- arcades still had a couple of good years left, at least where I am, they didn't start dying until around 2000.  SS4 was in a couple of places near me and got a decent amount of play, but it was nowhere near SS1 or even SS2 levels.

I had no ideas that combos were kept to a minimum in these games. That's right up my alley. I've only done decently in fighters when using slow strong characters who can drain your heath with simple combos. Combo heavy games like MvC are way too much for me.

Title: Re: SAMURAI SHODOWN!!!!

Had some good online matches. Getting the hang of it. Still just using my old SS1/2 main of Ukyo and mixing up flying swallows and illusion dash thing and apple slicing with slide kicks and slide swords. Struggled hard on a Yoshitora with his huuuuuuuuuuuuge range and length of his hard attack that hits 5 times and knocks you way back. Was having trouble getting in. Went to practice mode afterwards and got the timing down for sword reversal of that if you see him raise his arm back for it.

I never would've thought that like 20 years later I'd still be playing Samurai Shodown with Ukyo doing the same 3 moves. In a lot of fighting games like SF I'm kinda annoyed if they don't give old characters new moves because otherwise they feel kinda boring after all this time, but oppositely in SS 2019 I'm glad the old characters pretty much just have the same moves as 1992 or whatever. Makes it much easier getting back into it if you played a lot of SS1/2 back in the day.

At some point I should probably try some of these SS3/4/5 and new characters. I think I played as Basara a couple times when SS3 came out since he was the coolest looking new character but generally I didn't mess around with anyone from SS4 and beyond. SS3 probably last one I actually played in the arcades. Like I recognize Yoshitora from SS4 or SS5 but I don't think I've ever used him. I did use the bow bunny girl in SS5 the times I played that. Kinda surprised she didn't make the cut because she has a pretty standout design like Basara. Feels like with cutting Cham Cham out and not including characters like that they're trying to cull the fanservice in this one to appeal to more of the FGC, which is fine but both of those characters were pretty awesome.

The game developer SNK has announced that Samurai Shodown (or Samurai Spirits) have topped 40,606 units sold in Japan. The units include the 30,179 physical copies and 10,427 digital copies. And to celebrate such milestone, SNK will release a FREE Samurai Shodown theme for PlayStation this mid-July in Japan.

Good for them, hope it did well here too!

In the arcade heyday, they were everywhere on Long Island- I remember seeing or playing games in convenience stores, pizza places, laundry mats, bowling alleys, batting cages, and comic stores.   After SF2 came out, almost all these places had that or other early fighting games.  There was a comic store I went to once that had four arcade machines in the back- Including SF2 CE and a NeoGeo with World Heroes, which was the first time I saw that.  Literally everyone was there to play games and didn't care about the comics, lol.  All these teenagers were huddled around WH playing the death match mode.  I thought it was going to overtake SF2 and become the new big fighting game.   :lol

Played for a while last night, mostly in ranked- finding better players now.  Had a frustrating set of matches against a Yoshitora scrub.  It's not that hard to counter his hard slash and make him lose his weapon, but the combination of that and some of his specials just made for some boring, RAGE filled matches.  :lol :rage  Used it as an opportunity to practice.

Also messed around with multiple characters during some sets and in casual lobbies.  Nakoruru is fucking AWESOME and I may have to start using her.  I love using Kyoshiro but some match-ups are really hard.  Holy FUCK Genjuro is TOO GOOD (fought against him and got annihilated).  And Shiki...uh...I tried.  There's got to be something missing here.  She can't suck that much.   :doge

Surprisingly few Haohmarus online so I used him a bit too.  He's pretty solid.

I still haven't used anyone other than Ukyo and one run with Nakoruru in story mode  :lol
I need to try some of these other characters.

What do you like about Nakoruru? I liked the movement options but her range with her sword and her damage is really small which throws me off.

And yeah, Yoshitora feels annoying to play against because his moves have huge fucking range and huge fucking damage. I had a match against the guy on the raven guy (who I feel like 50% of online players use) and we did like 10 rematches because they were good matches. When I played a Yoshitora guy I did one rematch out of courtesy and then got the fuck out because it was just annoying fighting that guy.

I've only used Haohmaru and Darli Dagger in ranked so far. Won a match with like no health after getting disarmed. I guess my opponent didn't know that her hard Point Break attack eats one attack and deals out a shitload of damage. :lol

I haven't really spent time with anyone else yet. Nakoruru and Galford were the characters I tried using when I played on my friend's NeoGeo Pocket back in the day, so maybe I'll give them a try. Jubei interests me too. My worst match has been against Hanzo Hattori. He's all over the place.

Fast and can really dish out punishment up close.  Good normals.  Good 'extra' movement options with the bird and her slide attack.  Really it's stuff from older games- you can use Mamahaha as both a ride and as your projectile as always, plus the Kamui Rimuse will stop projectiles as well.

And yeah, Yoshitora feels annoying to play against because his moves have huge fucking range and huge fucking damage. His spammier stuff is easy to see coming, but doing multiple matches against was so tiring and tedious, lol.  Need to find a good counter character to him.

Just remembered the loading screen rabbit animation (https://youtu.be/BkZDwqdOfd4?t=39) reminded me very much of this (http://www.chojugiga.com/) library of Japanese illustrations. I wonder if they commissioned the original artist for it or were just inspired by the style. The license permits up to 20 illustrations per game but without modification. Such a great range of illustrations.

It's been revealed that Shizumaru Hisame will be coming to Samurai Shodown as a free DLC fighter in September 2019.

In addition to this, gameplay was shown for Rimururu, Basara, Kazuki Kazama, and Wan-Fu. Remember that these fighters will be releasing in August, October, November, and December of 2019.

The upcoming combatant, Shizumaru Hisame, first appeared in Samurai Shodown 3. One of his cinematic attacks has him using an umbrella to shield himself from the opponent's raining blood.

SNK still had more announcements to make. Clearly they've been very busy.

The first character that will be part of Samurai Shodown's Season 2 pack in 2020 has also been revealed. Mina Majikina apparently came in first place for the Samurai Shodown DLC character popularity poll.

Three other silhouettes were also present. These images appear to be placeholders as they all looked exactly the same. Still, this does tell us that there will be at least 4 combatants joining Samurai Shodown via season 2.

Does the new Sam Sho have A+B as heavy slash? One problem I have with SNK fighters is their unique control schemes. Like any other fighter would have a heavy slash button. SNK instead makes it A+B and some other weird control schemes no one else in the fighting game industry does.

Seems this doesn’t use AB for heavy. Glad they got rid of that dodge button from SSVS.

Since I play on a 4 face button DS4 I actually prefer 4 button fighters these days even if it’s lame and less depth. 20+ years of playing on PS controllers and I still can’t pull off combos that use L1/R1 inputs mixed in with face inputs.

I mean my favorite fighter VF only uses 3 buttons and has tons of depth so idk

Ran through story mode with Rimururu, fun move set but I suck with these lower damage short range fast characters. Can you juggle off the b, d, db horizontal ice spike that bounces enemies off the wall? Seems like you should but I couldn’t connect any follow up.

This loading though, man bring on the PC version. I did 1 round story mode and my game timer was like 6-7 mins and real time 20 mins had passed and I skipped everything I could. Less than 50% of the time was actually playing. I get this is less of an issue in 2p with instant rematches over and over but I have no one to play against  :'(

Ok, so the deal with me and online in MP games is I like playing online against friends whether irl friends or internet realm friends,

but while playing against random strangers is ok, since I don't know these people and I don't use voice chat or anything it just feels like playing a cpu on a high setting if I'm not that good and everything is better than me. I think being able to chat and talk about stuff while playing is a big deal for me. It's why I don't mind playing with strangers in FF14 since I'm on a kb+m and chatting while we do dungeons and stuff.

I also don't have a lot of internet friends. Just like you guys, so it's hard for me to play with people I know. I'm down to play with any of ya if we set times like a day before so I can make sure I'm free. I'm west coast and I know some of you are east coast so it's tough for weeknights.

You've brought this up before- Can't speak for everyone, but generally when playing competitive games I don't do voice chat and find that a lot of people are the same.  It's distracting (or annoying if you get matched up with some moron).  I also tend to go for 1-on-1 modes more than lobbies which can be less "chill."

Definitely can depend on the game since in something like SFV, nobody talks since mics aren't even available!  You have to be in a party.  But then in something like DOA, lobbies usually have people with mics talking about whatever.

Not to say that I wouldn't be up for playing and chatting with you if you'd like, because am always down to play with fellow BORITOS. :)

good stuff in patch notes, although I am not sure why you'd remove the invin on DP moves unless in max rage?  :doge

will check out later, looks like move speed increased across the board, wonder how that will work/if it's enough to affect overall match pace.

Our original review called the Neo Geo Mini arcade-style retro console “cute, but an imperfect nostalgia trip.” The Samurai Shodown limited edition, released this week to celebrate the latest entry in the long-running fighting game series, is exactly that, but it comes with more stuff and looks so much nicer

https://kotaku.com/the-samurai-shodown-limited-edition-neo-geo-mini-is-cle-1836996031

So last month.

https://www.amazon.com/Samurai-Shodown-Limited-not-machine-specific/dp/B07T4JL1BM

$140 (without S&H) and apparently the emulation is "not so good" according to Kotaku comments. So you'd be buying it for the "cool" factor.

It's just another variation following the international and Christmas versions, but the game lineup is the same as the regular Japanese version, IIRC.  They have color schemes for Haohmaru, Ukyo, Nakoruru, and Kuroko, some at generally jacked-up prices over the standard versions by import sellers, despite the fact that that nothing is different about them.  I want to say I saw the Kuroko one listed for $250+ recently, lol.

AFAIK the emulation on the NeoGeo Mini is fine and the screen is pretty good- the general complaints are that the controls aren't great on both the unit and the pads, plus TV-out kinda sucks.  You can get standalone units for $85 right now- might get one for shits n' giggles if it gets dumped for $50-$60.

Also to note is that SNK just recently announced a new arcade stick that not only works with the Mini (and PC), but has TV out and 20 built-in games (not revealed yet) of its own.  Interested to see if the TV output on this thing is any better.

Joystick Mode

In this mode, you can use the arcade stick normally by simply plugging it into a NEOGEO mini or PC. We guarantee a solid experience with this arcade stick.

Console Mode

In this mode, simply connect the stick via an HDMI cable into a TV and get ready to enjoy some of SNK’s finest fighting games. There are 20 pre-installed NEOGEO classics just waiting to be played. You can even rearrange the button layout in the options menu. Also, you can attach NEOGEO mini PAD controllers or even another NEOGEO Arcade Stick Pro for some glorious 2-Player action!

Would be nice if free but I am guessing S2.

Basara I am not feeling for some reason. May just be due to fact I have been playing around with characters I never really messed with all that much and don't want to change up, not sure...his play style is the same.

The Switch port has been delayed until next year...in North America.  The Japanese version is still showing as coming out next month.

Played around with him for a bit yesterday- lots of fun, although I miss the Bust version style moves from SS4.
Title: Re: SAMURAI SHODOWN!!!!

I was actually thinking about SLASH/BUST last night as I was having fun messing around and thought the rage suicide move was a bit different? It doesn't feel that useful in comparison to the weapon flip, but didn't play around too much. I couldn't remember for sure whether he played more like the SLASH moveset (I really didn't play him much as liked Sogetsu more), but was pretty sure it was. His SSM is an awesome throwback, but wasn't that for the BUST? I'd have to look back.

I wonder if they are contemplating bringing the different movesets back at all, and if so would they wait for a full sequel or push through in an update? Also wonder if they would even keep the US wording or move to the JP 'Chivalry/Treachery.' They tease Amakusa at the endings, I am kind of thinking he would be saved for a sequel but they have been good with updating so far...can see S2 being pretty good. I at least expect a better character select screen.

Overall just really hope they can pull off all the things they are planning with the game. No one is thrilled a Stadia version is pushing out the Switch/Steam versions, but hopefully it was a decent moneyhat that can be put back into the game.

Title: Re: SAMURAI SHODOWN!!!!
Post by: bork on November 19, 2019, 09:00:10 AM
Doubt that Slash/Bust is coming back and am OK with that TBH- this is basically the 2.5D version of SSV and most of the characters generally feel more "complete" this way.  IIRC Bust Kazuki didn't have any of the fireball attacks and had multi-hit kick attacks instead.

I just hope that the Stadia version doesn't mean they aren't releasing this on Steam, but then again I expect it to be dead on arrival there anyway in terms of players online.  :-\

You have to buy the season pass separately, but it's on the cheaper side.  I grabbed the "deluxe" version with the DLC characters since it is (was?) discounted pre-release.

Played some more of SS Switch last night and experienced some framerate drops here and there- it didn't affect the game play, but it is noticeable when it happens. Played online once and the other player was likely in Japan, so it wasn't the greatest connection quality. Even if online ends up not being the best in this version, I'm satisfied with this port since I plan to primarily play it as a handheld game and ghost battle/survival is fun.

Can't judge online based on that one match anyway.  FWIW SNK Heroines was good online...it just had a shitty 30 FPS framerate, lol.

Yeah I wouldn't consider a switch port primary rev for something like this, would be CPU/dojo fights onry (not like I go online a lot anyway).

Is the loading any faster than PS4 rev?

Here's a framerate test.  So it looks like it occasionally dips to 50-55-ish FPS on average.  Not too bad and again didn't affect anything from what I've played.

Iroha has got to be the most "fan-service" character that they've ever created- a scantily-clad crane maid who breaks the fourth wall and talks to you, the player.   :lol  She's pretty dated in the sense that the character came along when maid cafes got huge in Japan.  Pretty sure that fizzled way out years ago although I do remember seeing maids out on the street last time I was there, so what do I know.

All are good additions gameplay wise I think, although I expected a soul cali crossover? I want Voldo.  :lol

Maybe character #4 will be someone from Soul Calibur.  Stick with the trend and make it Taki.  :lol

:stahp

Really need to get a controller paired with my phone for remote play.

I might start using her- she's got actual NORMALS now (explained by the bow having a blade on the end of it) as opposed to ARROW ARROW ARROW ARROW like in SS5 and SS6.  It's like she's a real character now!

how embarrassing.  :lol

I like her moveset though so we will see. was hoping they would have next reveal at end but nope. I want Gen-An, but I guess we might be due a soulcalibur crossover? Yoshimitsu or Cervantes would do best, Mitsurugi would be ok...but watch it be Ivy or something. thinking chances of an extra free character like they did with Shizumaru are pretty slim.

for some reason I didn't click with Sogetsu when I like him better in the 2D ones, but being honest I haven't played in a while...am sure I will cycle back eventually as love the game.

I didn't even realize the switch rev dropped in NA but they apparently dumped it on Feb 25! will have to see what the DLC situation is, I am not seeing any available at a glance. with this and the whole stadia vs. PC deal, stepping back SNK have kind of mismanaged the game past S1 IMO.

*edit* I just remembered they announced it for EGS.  :lol

It sucks that they did end up getting that EGS MONEY HAT.  I may get it on there (would be my first EGS game) if there's enough people playing.

I really like how this game has turned out.  Wish more people were into it.

Same, I really want it on PC but would way rather on steam with everything else. I am totally expecting it to backfire and go on sale immediately after (or given away).

Will probably be a drunk buy.  :doge

PC version will release on the EGS on 6/11.  Didn't see anything about a bundle, which means you'll have to buy the game and then fork over another $40 for both season passes.

6/11 is also when the Samurai Shodown Collection releases on the EGS...for free from 6/11-6/18 (at which point it comes out on Steam).  Not sure if this is just a trial thing or if it will be free to own if you get it during that time, but it just kind of feels like SS 2019 is being sent to die on EGS.

LRG did it for ADK Tamashii too.  These things look great and have some nice extras inside.  Pix N' Love's Samurai Shodown 2019 that recently released includes a physical copy of the NeoGeo Pocket Samurai Shodown! 2 in the box and is the only way to get a physical copy of that game.  Am wondering if they'll do something similar and bundle it with Gals Fighters or something.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
I ended up with three Samurai Shodowns because of all these different releases.  :dizzy

PS4, Switch, and the Pix N' Love Switch version:

This game's release and announcement makes me wonder what the point of Limited Run Games taking pre-orders for Samurai Shodown V Special in an AES-style shockbox was.  Seems pointless now with this release coming.

No screen-tearing for me.  Load times are the same as PS4.  Maybe a second faster but I started counting right when I picked a stage in practice.

Went online and found zero games.  :lol  No ranked, no lobbies.  Dead on arrival?  Everyone is playing the collection, I imagine.

Now am trying SSV Perfect.  It keeps finding opponents and then disconnects.  I'm not having a very good first impression of EGS online
Title: Re: SAMURAI SHODOWN!!!!
Post by: Akala on June 11, 2020, 11:06:31 PM
I played around some more, was getting mad tearing on full-screen but is perfect on borderless windowed.  very limited video options.

EGS online seems shit, I couldn't get a match when tried either but was really just wanting to gauge how it performs. even dojo ghosts take a while to load in but I am getting noticeably better load times versus PS4.
Title: Re: SAMURAI SHODOWN!!!!
Post by: bork on June 11, 2020, 11:10:43 PM
So it's weird- I restarted the game and started getting better load times in some modes but not in others.  Some as short as 14-15 seconds versus 20-ish on consoles.

I have to run the game borderless windowed to get the right aspect ration (ultra-wide monitor), but this causes some slight performance issues in most games for me and I think this is one of them.  Will try forcing 16:9 before playing next time and try full-screen.  As-is I noticed some frame drops here and there- reminded me of the Switch port.

Got some matches online.  The first was AWFUL and so laggy I could barely do anything.  Others were better.  About the same as the consoles.  I played a guy and beat him the first two matches, then he switched to Shizumaru and kept getting me.  It would be down to no life and he kept winning.   :lol  Not my night for it.

I think the game looks a bit sharper than the PS4 version.  My monitor isn't 4K so I might install this on my laptop and try seeing how it runs on a 4K TV.

I was happy with S2, with the exception of the Warden.  This new addition may indicate that another round of characters are coming- Warden was supposed to be it for S2 DLC.

You're not wrong! :lol

But I'm not even talking about matches on PC- I never even got into one!  That's how broken it is or was.  I gave up after a week. Good thing it was free!

I checked out the PS4 version of this and got into a match pretty quick against somebody on the other side of the country and it was pretty good so decent first impression.  I'm not sure if I really see the HD filtering thing they were talking about- it's off by default and I made sure it was on, but it looked like any other older sprite based game running on a PS4 to me.  Dunno, but looks good with the TV filter on.

New char is pretty wild, very unorthodox. Feels more blazblue than samsho. moves position the umbrella which creates a warp point, also the SSM depends on where it is.

I don’t see myself playing her much but like that move set is a bit out there.

The next DLC character will be from THE LAST BLADE!  :o

Quote
“I’m proud to announce we’re bringing a character from The Last Blade into the Samurai Shodown Season Pass 3,” Samurai Shodown director Hayato Konya said in a special video message.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QhWBkBHzQy8

SNK producer Yasuyuki Oda added, “Wow! It’s that old fogey, Genbu no Okina, right?”

Konya responded, “Nope! Actually, they’re someone the fans absolutely adore! Of course, we’re also balancing and adjusting the game as well. You guys are really gonna love it!”

I'm all for it, but the two games' settings are a couple hundred years apart.

Something about The Last Blade that I loved was the small connection to the South Town games- Zantetsu is Eiji Kisaragi's ancestor.  :bow SNK :bow2

I got the new SS last week. I regret not getting this at launch. IT'S AMAZING. I actually went "wow" when I saw the final boss for the first time. Very impressive stuff. The fighting engine is GREAT. I feel stupid for avoiding this game because I felt it would be a disaster like Samurai Shodown 64 or that one atrocity that was on the xbox 360. It feels like the original games yet it looks amazing in 3d.

Is the game kinda dead online? I could only find one lobby.

edit: I just went on gamefaqs to see if there were any secret bosses like in Samurai Shodown 5 / Perfect and  :doge there are no faqs for this game. Signs of the times.

edit2: i wish there was an english physical strategy guide for this.. Yeah youtube is there but it's fun for just open a book and read about combos with step by step screencaps :D

Really like the game otherwise. Give me a no-load version and I'll probably go back to it.
