Title: Genesis/Mega Drive Mini 1 and 2

September 19th worldwide. 40 games total. M2 doing emulation  :o

First 10 games:

Castlevania Bloodlines
Comix Zone
Gunstar Heroes
Madō Monogatari
Puyo Puyo Tsu
Rent a Hero
Shining Force
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Space Harrier 2
Wrestleball

Uhhhhhhhhh, that is legit! If the other 30 games are up to snuff, this should have a huge chunk of the quality games on the system all with M2 quality emulation and hopefully save states and stuff like SNES/NES mini. I didn't think I'd be into these minis (and I'd still rather have them portable, but w/e), but I'm getting good mileage out of the SNES/SFC one and I think I'll get some good mileage from this one too.

Nice!  If it's M2 behind it, I'm probably going to get one just because, but hype is less because of this thing:

It's such an amazing RetroPie case and it plays pretty much all the old games so well.  But if Sega releases a good product, they'll sucker me into buying one for sure.

We only know one fourth of the line-up. Also generic crap like Sonic Spinball is on every collection already, so this better has more ''fresh'' ports like Castlevania.

It has 40 games and they just showed 10 of them.  :doge  Those are also what's included on the J-version.  Might be differences.

The American box shown also has the "includes Sonic 1" graphic on it.

1. M2 is doing this.  M2 does a much, much better job of porting these games to modern hardware than anyone else.  Check out what they've done on the 3DS and Switch recently, for example.

2. There's still 30 more games to be revealed.  Let's see what those are beyond the obvious remaining Sega-developed titles.

Quality emulation mainly. I bought all the Sega Ages games on PS2 because M2 did amazing stuff. Having 40 quality games with all the M2 knick knacks on a little box with hdmi out and controller is nice.

Yes, it's in the photo I posted earlier, lol.  It's a really nice controller.  There's also a white variant, but I had to return it since it's not bluetooth and is instead a 2.4 ghz wireless pad with a dongle for a real Genesis.

The Genesis Mini uses USB controllers, so I wonder if these will work. :thinking

Honestly, if the Genesis controller can be used on other consoles as a USB wireless (or wired) controller for the sake of fighting games, I'd consider one.

Double so if it's easy to mod a la Raspberry Pi.

Not happening since they're FucKonami games.  Maybe they'll be included on those $20 Konami Contra and CV collections and maybe they'll be good emulation ports.

Also I guess this means no SF2 CE in the US lineup. I remember playing that on genny back in the day.

I hear ya and agree on the feel. It does seem like an odd decision to have different controllers for the 2 regions. I mean if you're going for authenticity Megadrive still launched with a 3 button control in Japan too, right? It feels like a weird decision that Sega USA thought people would resonate more with the retro feel of a 3 button controller than the 6 button one or something.

That d-pad looks good though. Sega always had the best d-pads. Playing a lot of Switch lately and the d-pad on the pro controller is so bad. As a mostly Playstation/PC w/Dual Shock gamer it's definitely taking some hard adjusting since a lot of the Japanese games I play are still d-pad heavy in 2019. Wish Nintendo will release a better d-pad controller at some point. Especially with all the virtual console/retro stuff...

anyhow, digressing, but looking back at the Megadrive d-pad it looks so good to me.

Absolutely not worth it for anyone who owns a real Mega Drive/Genesis. Not compatible with 32x, compatibility issues with Sega CD, can't play CD games from other regions.
OSSC + real hardware + Everdrive flash cartridge is the way to go. Everdrive even allows you to defeat the CD region lock.

So...literally not the same

I never humor your dumb ass but this time I will.

Genesis has the 16-bit red marker from the Japanese MD. The only thing added really was the genesis logo to the top plate. MD Europe is the only one without the red. But the overall shape is the same. It’s ridiculous to say Euro is that much better for a system that has the same style and shape except and difference in color on a single stripe and one logo.

It’s the equivalent of saying European Dreamcast logo is better than American because it’s blue and not red when ultimately it’s still the same frickin logo.

Yes, I know that- what I'm saying is, take away the fighting games and there's not really much else that uses it (to the point of being gimped without the extra buttons) that we're going to see on this collection.  Regardless, it's just dumb that they're releasing different pads in different regions.

Is there a SD card slot on it?  The At Games portable has one so all you need to do is just slap the ROMs on one.  Sega's always seemed to have a pretty lax attitude about emulators and ROMs.

No, but AtGames has proven their emulation is dogshit

SNES's internal emulator is really good, and with M2 my hope is their emulator is just as good.

It does have USB slots so at most you would probably be able to plug in a USB stick

Next ten games were revealed in Japan:

- Ghouls 'n Ghosts
- Street Fighter 2 Special Champion Edition
- Mega Man: The Wily Wars
- Golden Axe
- The Super Shinobi (aka Revenge of Shinobi)
- Phantasy Star IV
- Story of Thor (aka Beyond Oasis)
- Puzzle & Action: Tant-R
- Party Quiz Mega-Q
- Yu Yu Hakusho: Makyou Toitsusen

Safe to say the last three probably won't be on the American version

Also it was confirmed that the Mini would support USB hubs for multitap gameplay (for the 4 player games)

Damn, that's pretty awesome.  I wonder if SF2 will make it onto the other region versions with those three-button pads.  Wily Wars being released would be pretty big since it would technically be the first time it's ever gotten an American release outside of the Sega Channel!  :o

The Yu Yu Hakusho game is made by Treasure and is a precursor of sorts to Guardian Heroes.  It's too bad that will never be officially localized.

I would think SF2 would still be put on the western versions, since the name itself is pretty big and Capcom seems to license it out pretty cheaply since even some of the AtGames clones had it.

They still had Spider-Man due to Sega having the license at the time, which they don't have now.  Also it still used Sonny Chiba's digitized face from the intro to Shadow Warriors and I think the Godzilla boss was still Godzilla and not a skeleton.  A fully infringement-fee version (which makes Spider-Man pink) didn't come out until the Wii Virtual Console/PS3/360 download.  The latest Genesis collection was the first time it was included on a compilation though, maybe Sega doesn't think enough people like the game to include it.

http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/the-revenge-of-shinobi/

Shows that all the licensed stuff and even the title screen did end up getting changed out, so that shouldn't be a problem.

It was on the Dreamcast Sega Smash Pack and then not again until the recent PS4/Xbone/Switch compilation.  That's crazy!

EDIT: It also got released stand-alone on XBLA and PS3, plus mobile, so it has been around recently.

I would totally go for that, even if it didn't use the discs.  I was looking to get a Sega CD, but the prices for a system in decent working condition and most of the games are insane right now.  I can put the games on my modded SNES Classic, but I would gladly give money for a new version of the system.

I believe even the Sonic 3 part for the lock-on is entirely (like for 2) on the & Knuckles ROM. If there's problems of some kind with Sonic 3, there will be with & Knuckles.

Though on Steam they didn't separate them, it's just Sonic 3 & Knuckles: https://store.steampowered.com/app/71162/Sonic_3__Knuckles/

I'm still shocked they put Thunder Force III on there over IV.  I'm probably the only person in this world that prefers 3 over 4.  I mastered that game.
I'm not really getting this trickle feed of game reveals of late.  Sony pulled the same shit on it's PS1 mini.   If it's licensing, then just wait to reveal it all.  Or here's an idea... Take a poll and let the consumers decide what their top 40 games are and roll from there.

True... they seem to actually put some effort into putting actual classics on there than the crap no one cared about like Kid Chameleon, Greendog and Bonanza Bros..  (probably just jinxed this thing)

For the remaining (10 is it?), here's my preferred list..
- El Viento
- Phantasy Star 2
- Road Rash
- Shining in the Darkness
- Shadow Dancer
- OutRun
- SOR1
- SOR3
- Valis III

It sold enough back in the day to warrant a sequel.  The gameplay was always subpar, the only reason it was semi-popular was because of the graphics.  I never liked either game and they have not aged well.

I'm hoping for Rocketknight because of this thread, though I'm not seeing it happen realistically. "Realistically" I want to see Aladdin, Monster World 4, Outrunners, Musha and, if you must pick more well whored-out ports, Phantasy Star 2, Sonic 3/K and Shadow Dancer.

Flicky
Vectorman 5
Chakan
Greendog

where's Sonic 3D Blast :snob

A lot of the first wave of EA games were total garbage.  Bad ports of PC games that weren't great to begin with.  Sword of Sodan is easily one of the worst games ever.

I believe you that it's a bad game, I'm just surprised because I've never seen it mentioned before but then I don't follow a lot of retro threads.

I feel like when you're a kid there's no such thing as good or bad games, especially in the early gaming eras. You just played what was there and if it was bad and bullshit you got used to it. I mean I remember the original Ninja Turtles 1 on NES being kinda bullshit especially in the water stages but I have no idea if it was a good or bad game.

Now I gotta go look up why Ecco is bad. In my 20 year+ memories I always thought Ecco was like the pioneer for all these ocean based action adventure exploration games like Aquaria. Next you're gonna tell me Toe Jam & Earl was bad too.

Rocket Knight is great, would be a great inclusion. You always wonder why they never chase porting it, but hey, Konami. They did have that Climax re-do a while back, but the reviews were so middling I never even bothered.

https://imgur.com/uDA1jYw

Totally agree that back in the day we would kinda live with bad games, adjust to jank, whatever.

https://imgur.com/MtmhPjN

That said, being a nerd I generally knew what was supposed to be bad, but there were multiple occasions where (usually licensed) garbage would come out and sucker wide swathes of either the kids or their parents, and there went several weeks/months gaming budget. TMNT NES was such hot trash, that game somehow diminished multiple weekends for young me cause I couldn't get away from it. Everyone I knew had it, and everyone was stuck at like the exact same sewer part.

The Sunsoft Batman game was the same way, ET didn't teach the industry squat.

*edit* not sure why image broke.

A lot of Genesis games that keep making these collections are overrated trash.

Shit like Golden Axe. The only Golden Axe worth playing is 3. 2 on a good day.

Too many Genesis "classics" are considered classics purely because of their style which was unique at the time such as Vectorman. Take that game apart and  you get an average game but it's considered a "classic". Another example is probably Comix Zone. Great style, but what a chore to play.

I won't even touch Sonic on this post.

Too many Genesis "classics" are only that because of style and not substance.

Super Nintendo makes Genesis its bitch. It hurts to admit it. I was a Genesis kid growing up, but a part of being an adult is admitting when you're wrong.

That's the best thing about this current MD Collection: the games they're picking are of the actual good games on the system. Not the required "classics" that are actually trash games.

Altered Beast I wouldn't say was trash, but it wasn't good either. The better controls/fun were saved for when you were a beast. It was great as an arcade game, it was always full.

It's iconic cause everyone had it due to being a pack-in.

in a shocking twist, there are now 42 games on the Mini

The last 10 games are:

- Road Rash II
- Strider
- Virtua Fighter 2
- Alisia Dragoon
- Columns
- Dynamite Headdy
- Kid Chameleon
- Monster World IV
- Light Crusader
- Eternal Champions

JP games:

- Columns
- Monster World 4
- Dynamite Headdy
- Assault Suit Leynos (aka Target Earth)
- Langrisser 2 (never released out of Japan)
- Alisia Dragoon
- Road Rash 2
- Slap Fight MD (never released out of Japan)
- Snow Bros. (never released out of Japan)
- Lord Monarch (never released out of Japan)

The two bonus games are

- Tetris
- Darius

Tetris apparently is super rare and only like 10 copies exist, while Darius was fan-ported to the Genesis (so never officially released) and M2/Sega picked it up to put on the Mini

NINTENDO MINIS ANNIHILATED

Quote
In an even bolder move, Sega revealed that it’s releasing a handful of accessories for the Genesis Mini: recreations of the Sega CD, Sega 32X, and a Sonic the Hedgehog cartridge. All of these can stack to recreate the infamous “Sega Tower of Power,” only on a more diminutive scale.

Those add-on items are purely cosmetic, though. You won’t experience the full 32-bit power of a 32X by plugging it in. But the accessories will offer a more authentic aesthetic experience.

I wouldn't get too excited, apparently it only changes the game's region - I don't think it gives access to the JP games like Yu Yu Hakusho
Boo, they really should just put all the roms in all the systems.

Grew up with the Super Nintendo at home. Played plenty of Genesis with a friend who lived down the street. Picked up the Genesis collection on PS2, then picked up the Sonic Sega Genesis Mega collection (it had some name like that) on the PS3. So I will have played a decent amount of the games that come with the Genesis Mini, but half of them I either barely touched or haven't played at all.
Sucks they don't include the 6 button controllers with the system since you have SF2 CE in the package (they include it in Japan). And I would never ever recommend Virtua Fighter 2 on the Genesis. That's really all I kinda frown on for an $80 package. I'm down to pick one up at some point. Don't care if they are hard to find at first as I'm in no rush.

Pre-ordered this and might cancel now. I mostly wanted it for MWIV and Castlevania Bloodlines. Bloodlines was by M2 and is on the Konami Vania Collection. I have MWIV on ps2 and 3.

I don't see the point of another Sega Genesis Collection and see this as a massive waste of money now. Will get Sega Genesis Classics on Switch instead. The Genesis Mini doesn't even have Shining Force II.

edit: Yeah, cancelling.

little worried about the input lag tho. We just got a pi 4 so i'm wondering if at this point it'd just be better to buy some 8bitdo controllers and set it up as a retro box

It's well done, as good as the SNES/NES. Since it uses the same plugs (HDMI, USB charging/plug) I just re-used the same things from the SNES so everything is still in the box.

Hoping it gets cracked open to see what ticks underneath

The controller cord is nice and long too.

A 43rd game that can only be accessed via a hidden code was revealed – Kiss Shot, a snooker game released by Sega in 1992. The game is only available on the Japanese Mega Drive Mini, by pressing A+B+C and Start while inside Game no Kanzume Otokuyou.

TLDR the Genesis Mini is pretty much a SNES Classic in terms of power and hardware but configured differently of course

List of ROMs on the US device - none of the region-exclusives aren't hiding there unfortunately

The emulator used on the Mega Drive is m2engage. It’s closed source and also supports emulation of other consoles. It’s the same emulator used on the Wii U Virtual Console

Started playing Phantasy Star IV after duckroll was giving me lots of shit for having never played Link's Awakening before the Switch remake and never having played PSIV. (I never had a Gameboy or Genesis or N64 growing up! [but I borrowed my friends N64 to play & beat the 2 Zeldas and Mario 64, Turok & Goldeneye]).

Seems cool, once I turned message/battle speed on fast it moves at a fast clip. Art is nice and it feels good playing on a genesis controller. Nice music too. The only annoying dated thing is there are all these spells with weird names and no information on what they do so I'm having to use them on myself or enemies and figure it out. I still don't know what the MC's "earth" move does since it is against an enemy and doesn't do any damage numbers?

Probably just need to wiki spells/attacks.

I heard the translation is really bad, but I switched it over to the Japanese version thanks to the mini having both and while it reads smoother, the Japanese dialogue is also very limited by the small text boxes and pretty basic, so probably will just be lazy and play in English.

Shining Force... is cool
Castlevania rules
Contra rules (also really hard)
Landstalker rules

I had a MD growing up, but a lot of these games are ones we didn't have for whatever reason.

    Castlevania: The New Generation
    Shining Force
    Gunstar Heroes
    Thunder Force III
    Super Fantasy Zone
    Shinobi III
    Landstalker
    The Story of Thor
    Vectorman
    Wonder Boy in Monster World
    Darius
    Strider
    lisia Dragoon
    Kid Chameleon
    Monster World IV
    Eternal Champions
    Dynamite Headdy
    Light Crusader
...are all new to me so I'm on a bit of a discovery trip. The Story of Thor/Beyond Oasis seemed really dope from what I played

Well, I saw there's also a 70 lives cheat code, so yeah one of those will get me through it. I like Contra and don't mind hard trial & error Contra, but some extra lives to learn the stuff would be helpful.

This was one of those games that they intentionally made harder when released outside Japan.  Not as bad as some of the shit Working Designs did back then, but still makes me wonder what the point in removing the lifebars was, number of continues aside.

But most Contra games don't have lifebars and you die in 1 hit? I would think it's more that they added the lifebars for an easier JP version.

This was one of those games that they intentionally made harder when released outside Japan.  Not as bad as some of the shit Working Designs did back then, but still makes me wonder what the point in removing the lifebars was, number of continues aside.

But yeah DMC3 and moreso Onimusha 4 will always be the worst offenders of this.
Title: Re: Genesis Mini!!! Emulation by M2 :o Gunstar Heroes, Castlevania Bloodlines, etc
Post by: bork on September 25, 2019, 02:12:48 AM
Am assuming it was designed with the lifebar (really three hit points) in mind, then changed for us or released "incomplete." (We got it first)  The number of continues even differs in all regions.  WHY? :lol

Quote
The North American version was significantly harder than its Japanese counterpart, titled Contra: The Hard Corps, due to the removal of a life gauge that allows the player to take three hits from an enemy before losing a life. The Japanese version also features unlimited continues, in contrast with the American version, which only allows the player to continue five times.

The PAL version of the game is titled Probotector and like the European localizations of previous Contra games for home consoles, the main characters (CX-1 through 4) and some of the enemies were renamed and replaced with robotic counterparts (Browny was left unchanged, with only his name changed). The plot was also rewritten, with Colonel Bahamut and Dead-Eye Joe being redesigned as humanoid aliens, and the alien cell was replaced with a computer device called the "X-Drive".

The gameplay is the same as the North American version, but the player only has four continues in the European version, instead of five like in the North American release. Some cutscenes were also altered. For example, the player character no longer identifies the boss of Stage 1, a robot previously thought unmanned, to be piloted by a man, or Dr. Geo Mandrake being eaten by a monster created in his merger machine. It is also impossible to side with the Alien General in this version, thus eliminating one of the endings.

Pretty cool that you can check out all three versions on this thing.

The Contra collection that was released not too long ago also lets you do that.  I actually have a repro that uses a hack to have the Japanese version but with English translation.  If you have a Everdrive or other emulator,  it's the best way to play the game.

SOR2 is widely recognized as one of the top 3 beat em ups of all time, but alll of the SOR games are well worth playing.  Though with 3, if you can play the Japanese version, it's the better choice.  Another example where the US version was made harder for whatever reason, it's worse than Contra as the enemies are suuuuper cheap in the US version.

Didn't get a Genesis until the Nomad in 1996!  Had a Playstation before I had it, lol.

As a kid, none of my friends had a Genesis.  My brother's friend had one, though.  When I went to his house, I was always just stunned at how amazing the games looked at the time.  First instance of that "arcade at home" feeling.

But we ended up getting a Super Nintendo- mainly because of Street Fighter II.  Later on when I got the Nomad, I got all into the Genesis games and wound up getting a CDX and 32X.  Loved that library way more than the Nintendo stuff overall.

Sometime in 91 or 92 my grandpa bought me and my brother a Genesis for some reason. He didn't even know anything about it or even about video games in general, I guess he just saw it in a store and thought we'd like it. We sold our NES and games and used the money to buy Sonic 2 [which cost like $80].

I had NES/SNES and parents wisely would never let me have another system. I got to play some of the bigger games because friends had it, but generally just the crap stuff I wasn’t too interested in. Think fave games were Joe Montana and that (likely garbo?) Holyfield boxing game.

We never had a genesis in the house until the mini, which I convinced my brother he wanted.  :brain

I didn’t get to play any of the RPGs/etc. until way later when I got a Nomad on the cheap.

I had a Genesis and spent a good amount of my childhood with it, especially Light Crusader which is why I'm so glad they included it.

Not gonna lie, SNES is superior in every genre, except action games. First time I played SoR2 and Shinobi 3 on some collection :whoo This impression will solidify if Hard Corps is as good as people say.

My bro and me had a NES, which we just called: "The Nintendo" and a gaming capable PC.
Then we got new neighbors and the kid next door had a Megadrive, which we called "The SEGA".

On weekends we would stay at my place and play the likes of Double Dragon II, Super Mario Bros. 3, Mega Man, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 and whatever else we could get our hands on in between LEGO sessions and plastic soldier wars.
On Wednesday's we would hang at his crib and play Two Crude Dudes, Power Rangers, Shinobi and other greats when we were done playing with the Action Man, Power Ranger robots and GI Joe's.

If only I could go back to those times for one day :tocry

I actually bought a Mega Drive about 5 - 6 years ago. Thinking I could 'relive' those days and although it was great to finally be able to play the Sonic & Knuckles tower we desperately wanted back then, it just wasn't the same.

I think sports might’ve been better too. Outside Super Tecmo Bowl I don’t remember any SNES sports stuff. I guess Punchout if that counts but it’s more an arcade game than sport to me. Did Genesis have NBA Jam? That was big on SNES too.

Continued my Streets of Rage 3 (JP) Zan playthrough and got up to Stage 7, then played the first 2 stages on US version normal w/Zan to compare.

This game pretty much sucks. Like even when you take away the padded enemy HPs in the US version and tons of enemies on-screen which makes the stages drag and take forever in the US version, it's not a very good game. The music is fucking AWFUL to the point where it sounds like maybe it's the emulator glitching and not actually music? But no, that's just the music. It doesn't go with the game at all. The sound effects are pretty terrible too and most of the enemies are just palette swaps of SoR2 enemies.

Zan is pretty good, between his full screen dash and his forward HP drain attack with his electric arm out you can pretty much just keep moving and dashing into people left and right and then extending your arm out when the enemies get up or after one or two hits.

But...he's not very fun to play in the long term because that's all you can do. He can't combo worth shit, his jumps have no range and suck and basically with the new system of being able to use HP drain moves everytime the bar fills up there's a lot of keep away -> electric arm -> repeat.

He also keeps saying this GARBLED AUDIO that sounds like POWER UP or BATTER UP or something with every.freaking.move and it sorta makes me hate playing as him.

But besides Zan, the movement is kinda weird. You dash and roll up and down but then there's spurts of slow when you're actually normal moving between that. It feels odd. The enemies are pretty boring so far and way less threatening in their moveset than SoR2. Like the whip girls after getting knocked down just like...sit on a knee for a few seconds before getting back up? Weird. Seven stages in I can't really think of any new enemy types since SoR2 outside some karate dudes who are less interesting than the SoR2 karate guys. The bosses suck too with the only sorta memorable one being the Robo-Mr.X and only because he shoots a rocket which is heat-seaking and the part with the 3 samurai ninjas because they were samurai ninjas.

The backgrounds are zzz and don't have any of the character of the SoR2 locations.

But now there's lots of cutscenes after every level. Eh, they don't interfere that much so this is one thing I'm not really gonna hate on. I guess it's ok.

Oh and going back to Zan, I don't like how he can't use weapons and every weapon just because a glowing light bowling ball he can throw zzz. I feel like there's a lot more knocking enemies down and waiting for them to get back up in SoR3. Maybe because there's more enemies at a time so you need the downtime?

SoR3 really feels like one of those games where a company licensed out their IP to some shitty shovelware company who made a quick sequel. Even though I wasn't feeling SoR1 because of its simplicity and lack of combos/blitz moves, etc..at least it sorta felt like a simple SoR2 by the same team. SoR3 just feels shitty as fuck.

I guess I like that they push more on the robot angle in this one.

Will finish my JP run up next time I play. Fwiw, the main difference with the JP version are the enemies have like 1/4th or 1/3rd the HP and are way less aggressive (Shiva boss on Stage 1 is like super fast and psycho on US version, but more like SoR2 speed on JP version), on the JP version the enemies will hardly ever beat you to a throw whereas in the US version some fucker threw me out of my Zan dash mid-dash wtf.

like this is a US version hard mode video and it’s a lot like my playthrough. It’s such a boring playstyle. Enemies just let you grab them one after another and throw them. Like the enemies are so less aggressive than SoR2 it hardly matters what enemy type you are fighting in SoR3, just walk up and do the same tactics. Whereas in SoR2 you need to play around the moves of the various enemy types because they’re always doing them.

Wat.

Also I played a few stages as Axel before Zan. Still seemed like a bad game.
And Max didn’t seem too bad when I tried him in 2. All the characters seemed solid in that.

Yeah don't mind demi he means the worst SoR anyway, the best one is obviously SoRR even though it's unofficial it uses all the elements from the three games and mixes up the stages but with pretty great music. Probably the best way to play SoR now.

I owned a Megadrive for a good part of my younger years, played the shit out of that thing. Loved renting games for it as well, so many games to play but I could always only ever take one I think for like a week or maybe two and then we'd have to return it. I found a couple of older people who had genesis it was crazy me and my friend we would just go to different houses and ask if they have a Megadrive and if we could maybe trade/borrow games  :lol. We lived in a quiet town where nothing ever happened so we never even thought of anything bad happening, ofcourse nothing ever did and I found a few people to trade games with. I played Ecco the Dolphin because I borrowed it from some stranger and like switched games for a week  :lol. Insane when I think of that now.

So this Genesis Mini comes out tomorrow.. I am seriously triggered to buy it. I just sold my xbox one and a gba sp so I have the money for it but ofcourse I don't need it. The other mini's are sitting in front of my tv just collecting dust. But I do enjoy having them  :-[

So bore boys should I buy one yey or nay

Idk, I like it! I'm definitely playing it more than the NES/SNES minis but difference is that I'd played most of the NES/SNES games and these Mega Drive/Genesis games are mostly new to me. On all 3 minis for games I've played, I'll play them a few mins for nostalgia and then I'm good. But for games I haven't played, if they still hold up, I actually stick with them and play through them.

Nice, makes it even better.

I realized that adding most/all of the NES/SNES classic games on Switch Nintendo Online has sorta made both useless outside roms you add yourself since they run the same on Switch Online + have portability option. But MD Mini still holds up since can't play a lot of these games with this good emulation anywhere else outside emulators.

Got this setup on mine, but while I added some stuff it just showed me how damn good the selection in the mini is because I’d keep thinking to add a game and it was already on there. Outside Musha and Rocket knight and Shining Force II and a couple others, the mini selection is pretty much the best of the era.

Those "go-around orbs" in the final level of Mania can fuck off into the sun. (I did beat it, though.)

Quote
At some point I realized I don't like my platformers to have momentum physics.

I mean, Mario is also a momentum-based platformer, but the lack of run button for precise control has a knock-on effect to Sonic's design that paired with "gotta go fast (but only sometimes)" makes the series... unpalatable to me as a platformer fan. Starting out from a dead stop in Sonic ALWAYS feels bad (to me), and that's why they had to add the Spin Dash, but that's kind of a hammer-for-a-screw "fix."

Combine trying to jump a series of vertical moving platforms (which involves turning, walking, and jumping all from dead stops) with the whole "you die if you intersect even 1 pixel in between platforms" issue, and actual platforming in Sonic is kind of a nightmare. Then try to do all that underwater with a ticking clock.

Mario doesn't kill you if you intersect moving platforms (to my knowledge), and it doesn't have a ticking clock underwater. These are both improvements on Sonic's design, and no amount of "well git gud" will change my mind on that.

Just used to what I'm used to I suppose.

Seriously though the Genesis controller has three whole faces buttons and they all do the same thing? Jump? That's it??

That's Wii Music levels of "limitations and simplicity actually enhance the experience!" :nintendo

I'm not saying a dedicated run button would fix Sonic, but it would make the game more fun to control.

To be fair, the water sections in Sonic Mania are really easy compared to Sonic 3 or Sonic 2.

Tried playing Sonic 3 Complete and it just feels a lot stiffer than in my memory. But still got through the first act without getting hit  :leon

The OG is meh but 2, 3&K and Mania are excellent. My favorite 2D platformers for sure.

There is one shitty classic sonic though, and that's Sonic CD. GOAT intro but the game itself fucking sucks.

I love the US soundtrack (Spencer Nilsen :bow2) but those level designs are just so damn sloppy and feel completely thrown together. Definitely the weakest entry in classic Sonic.

Tonight I uninstalled Project Lunar and tried out the newest Hakchi CE, which has Genesis Mini support.

I think I would recommend that over Lunar. If you are familiar with Hakchi from the NES/SNES the UI should feel familiar. It also does some things better than Lunar (Folders, Save State compression, better use of Retroarch). It also does not throw in annoying "games" that are just symlinks to different things, so you can actually have "only games" staring you in the face.

The only real drawback is that it doesn't have a good "scraper" for getting spine/boxart - Lunar does this perfectly. But I am sure Hakchi will be updated for this as well. For now you have to add your own / use the built in search.

Been meaning to ask .. Used Lunar to add a few extra games on there.  Only about 60 games on there total taking up roughly 75% of the storage, iirc, so I'm not maxing it out.  But when playing on there, there's definitely some noticable lag/delay.  Is it the crap controllers? Or is it the mini itself just processing slowly?  It's rather shitty and frustrating actually.

I assume the Sega CD versions of Sanic and Ecco will have the Spencer Neilson scores?  They may have been criticized back in the day, but I loved them.  Those 2 and Batman Returns were great.

But yeah, how bout that Snatch(er)? Or Terminator with Talarico's awesome score?
Surprised they allow Night Trap on there.

What's the deal on the "updated Space Harrier 2"?

I think the emulator is improved, some of the games on this machine didn't work at all on the first mini's emulator. Fingers crossed Hyperstone Heist works now!

Apparently they're only shipping about 10% of what they shipped for the Megadrive 1 Mini, so these are going to be harder to get hold of.

EU don't even have preorders open yet, so we're inevitably gonna be 'second chance backup' for scalpers and people who missed out from other regions  :maf

Can’t remember if on the first one you could switch the region and get their exclusive games?

None of these retro mini consoles (officially) offer a full suite of all regions ROMs to switch between.
The fact this includes all available regions for every included ROM, so switching language switches region is pretty cool though.
I haven't heard anything about PAL versions being in the EU console, thank fuck.

What's the deal on the "updated Space Harrier 2"?

M2 seem to have gone above and beyond on this one in terms of 'rarities' to the point they've created actual new ports of stuff - Puyo Puyo Sun is a multiplayer only demake of the PSX / Saturn game for example

I think the JP list is a good deal better but as I started looking into the method of obtaining that version instead of the US/Eu version I realized I'm never going to actually sit down and play through any of these games in mini-consoles so why bother. I'll get the US version and tinker around with some games for a bit and call it a day.

I do gotta say that the US/Eu version missing Popful Mail and Lunar 1/2 all because Vic Ireland wanted more money for this little release is pretty crap. What a dickhead. These releases are about game preservation, not about the devs of these old ass games or even Sega making $$$$ and getting rich. If those were on the US version and if SMT1 Sega CD got a localization and was on the US version, the US version would be pretty comparable.

I think there are "Unworked Design" romhacks for these games that remove the shitty changes Working Designs made out there.  So OK Vic, now instead of getting some money for these old games, you'll get no money and people will just hack the Mini 2 and throw them -or better versions- on there anyway.

Yeah, this is why I don't really like platforming in sonic games.

i haven't played mania, but sonic team have never made a good game  8)

even as a sega kid i knew sonic sucked

I didn't realize how right you were until I picked it up, Bork.  The entire packaging is about half the size of an xbox series s and a bit fatter.  The console itself is tiny!

So I plugged in the Mini 2 and messed around with stuff for an hour...

...and I don't think I had fun with a single game here. This thing just feels kind of pointless since the first mini had most of the hits like Gunstar Heroes, Contra Hardcorps, Sonic 2, etc.. and the rest you could load onto it or you could play one of the various Sega collections on Switch/Steam whatever which has the other ones and even better quality of life stuff like fast forward/rewind.

The SegaCD games were the main attraction but all the US ones kind of suck?
I probably should've gone for the JP version of the Mini 2 at least for some of the rare weird Japan stuff since I can read the Japanese.

I feel like out of all the minis the TG16 and SNES games held up the best whereas NES/Genesis stuff is pretty hard to play these days. I'd love to have a Neo-Geo mini since I feel like those would hold up but all the reviews of the various Neo Geo minis have been pretty negative so I never grabbed one.

Doubt I'll turn this thing on again and it wasn't exactly cheap. Was like $117 or something after tax/shipping. Not really worth it for my tastes. I'm fine with emulators or software collections even if the emulation isn't 100% perfect for old stuff.

Also I kind of feel like these games look better on a small screen. I prefer playing them on an emulator on my PC in a window or on the Switch vs my 65" OLED. It just looks too fucking big and everything looks pretty awful and the text is all HUGE.

I might have bought it for all the things on the JP version, but Western really is lacking. Shadow Dancer is the only game I was personally missing on Megadrive1 and that one's on every other collection anyway. Should've gone straight to Saturn.

It's not available in Sweden. I considered importing it from the UK, but since they left the EU that has become a pricey solution. And I have the same experience with mini consoles as Bebpo mentioned above, I barely use them.

I'm better off playing old games on the Switch or through an emulator.

Yeah, I switched over to the Mini 1 after playing Mini 2 and the lineup appealed a lot more to me. Lot of the older games that still hold up and are still fun are on Mini 1.

Could Mini 1 hacked not play SegaCD games? I've never looked into SegaCD emulation.
Title: Re: Genesis/Mega Drive Mini 1 and 2

I know M2 says the hardware tech isn't there for a Saturn Mini, but man that would be the first mini-console I would play the shit out of. Saturn library has some really great stuff, especially on the 2d end.

PS1 mini should've been the best of them all, since the PS1 lineup is massive and full of great games that still hold up, but Sony fucked that one up.

*edit* So out of curiosity, I looked up to see if they ever fixed this through hacks and I see that they did and apparently it's a great PS1 box now (along with being able to emulate some other older stuff like PSP/GBA).

It's the only mini system I never bought besides the Neo-Geo cabinet ones. Think I'll finally pick this up and hack it and mess around with it. I have a huge collection of physical PS1/Saturn games and beyond (I started hardcore game collecting in that era), but no working hardware to play these things on.

Except PS2. My PS2 slim still works great! I mean maybe my Saturn still works, dunno haven't tried it but I assume the battery is at least dead. My PS1 died decades ago and I didn't care since I'd use PS2 BC.

You can play anything with Retroarch on these devices. I prefer to see what the official emulator can do, plus Retroarch is added bloat and space. You couldn't run Sega CD on the Mini 1 "officially"

Makes sense.

So I'm guessing the PS1 official emulator in the classic sucks and the hacks are just running Retroarch so the only real benefit of using the PS1 Classic over any other box is just the look of it and PS1 controller (which isn't even the good PS1 controller with the dual shock).

In the end while I can run any of these older emulators on my PC or portable on my Steam Deck (I should look into how to do that one), I don't have a dedicated TV-hook-up emulator device, so I guess I can use the PS1 classic hacked for that purpose. Though mainly I just want a standalone box to mess around with old PS1 games out of curiosity like the rest of these minis.

The last time I played as PS1 game on original hardware (well PS2 BC) was...MGS1 replay before MGS4 came out.

The PS1 mini emulator is a fork of PCSX retroarch which "works" but yeah you basically run Retroarch anyway (one that runs better)

NES Classic -> great, some audio lag for those who can tell

SNES Classic -> great, actually runs better than Retroarch in many cases of input latency

Genesis Mini -> some audio issues, runs well though

TG-Mini -> not hacked unfortunately

PS Mini -> its just retroarch so doesnt really matter regardless

Mini 2 -> not hacked yet, has potential to be better to run games on than Mini 1

Any reason why the TG-Mini never got hacked? Just no interest?

I'm not picky enough to notice the audio lag thankfully so these all seem to run fine to me.

I hope this gets a CFW unlock as easy to use as Autobleem on the PS1 classic.  I’d already made my peace with the mini 2 being mostly useless plastic junk taking up some space, but it would great if I could make that slightly less useless.

I got the PS1 mini in and holy shit, unmodded this really is total crap emulation.

The 2d looks incredibly blurry, like running the bad CRT filter on the Genesis mini. Audio levels are all over the place (Mr. Driller is fucking loud), Toshinden is the ...European version?, the only way to access the menu is on the hardware, no way to access it from the controller. Zero emulation settings options, 1 save state that I don't think you can actually save? It's just like a temp spot from where you quit?

Yeah, wow this is bad. I can see why it bombed and it makes me appreciate these other mini consoles more and the small features in them to make them more playable.

Will hack it later, hopefully that will improve it a lot even just for base emulation/interface for these same titles.

Look up "Autobleem" it's pretty painless. You may also need to look into a Y splitter, due to how the ports work, it lets you power the hack as well as use a USB stick at the same time.

I use this:

Eris installs crud on your device, and is not updated/maintained anymore. Autobleem does it all right off the stick. No stick = stock device

So mine is running really slow and backing up the kernel is currently taking 15+ mins to zip up a file and on the tutorials it's like 20 seconds. I wonder if it's because I'm not using a powered USB adapter and the USB stick is running too slow. It seemed like if your USB stick doesn't work in low profile power mode that it shouldn't work at all, but mine works but it sorta doesn't run right.

Might need to get a splitter or power adapter thing first before trying this. Not sure if any of my USB sticks will work.
Title: Re: Genesis/Mega Drive Mini 1 and 2

The front usb ports are slow, its by design on the PS Mini. Thats why you use the splitter on the back port, it lets you use full power. The Cruzer Blade is because specific sticks don't work well, it's weird. I did my research, thats why I picked those two parts.

Yeah, I've got 2 USB sticks, 1 is too new and doesn't work without a powered hub and 1 is old and works but it keeps freezing in autobleem and I ain't gonna flash the kernel with a stick that keeps freezing and crashing the system.

Will grab a powered adapter and use my newer good USB stick with it and do the kernel backup/flash for OTG port enabling. I grabbed the splitter you suggested for after that.

I don't really understand how the USB hub fixes the power issue?

Like if there's not enough power coming out of the 2nd player port to power a modern USB stick, how is there going to be enough power coming out of the 2nd player port to power the entire USB hub that has the modern USB stick attached?

Yes, thats exactly it. The front ports output lower power.

Ok, I think the guides I'm looking at are fucked. They linked to a non-powered cheapo USB hub to get the initial USB working. But it sounds like there wouldn't be enough power from port 2 to power that USB hub and the modern USB stick. It sure looks like you either need an old ass USB stick that is guaranteed to work or you need a more expensive powered USB hub that actually has an AC plug in from the wall.

*edit* Yeah, looking it up that seems it.

Grabbing a powered USB hub that plugs into the wall and the OTG splitter you linked for after. That should let me get started on this.

Ended up going back and just playing some more of Genesis mini 2. Man these games are all pretty tough or slow. Not sure if there's any easy casual stuff on this group.

I never played Treasure's Alien Soldier before. Don't really get the controls. Couldn't beat the first boss.
Never played Viewpoint before, not a fan of 1 hit death = restart entire stage, especially with the weird isometric view for dodging bullets and large hitbox
Langrisser 1/Warsong is actually kind of neat, but sitting for 3-4 mins while the enemy takes their turn is zzzzz
Shining Force CD gameplay is kind of neat, but it's way too talky
Shining in the Darkness has nice art, but the dungeon crawling is kinda zzz
All these FMV SegaCD games are terrible. Mansion of Hidden Souls could be good except can barely see shit and it runs so slow.
Ristar seems kind of neat. Never played it before. Like the grab mechanics.
Elevator Action 2 is still solid though pretty sure I've played better versions.
Final Fight CD has nice music and voice but I don't like the more bland lack of colors compared to the SNES/GBA versions.
Vectorman 2 controls pretty well but the stages seem kinda unfun
Puyo Puyo in this is 2p only? Otherwise just endless practice mode?
Virtua Racing is boring compared to the Saturn version and various ports over the last two decades.

That being said, I do greatly respect the sprite scaling used in the emulation as the games look great. I wish the PS1 classic looked like this visually. Hopefully with the autobleem it'll look closer to this for 2d stuff Wild Arms.
Title: Re: Genesis/Mega Drive Mini 1 and 2

So I got autobleem running.

At double resolution with bilinear off (which keeps defaulting to on so I have to change it off every time) it looks alright. Basically looks like hooking up at PS1 and running PS1 320x240 ugly ass games blown up to 65" TV. Plus multiple save states.

Decent enough.

I was really hoping since it was an emulator to have FF and Rewind options and stuff, but turning Rewind on tanks the FPS to like 5fps and I didn't see any FF options.

It's kind of a neat, but not sure I'd play a game from start to finish on it, as opposed to playing on a PC emulator where I can find run games at fast forward speed (because old games are slow) and at much higher resolution than just "double resolution"

I read if you don't use autobleem but use normal retroarch you have more options to tinker with, so maybe I can try that someday. I guess this is good enough for curiosity sake of messing around with some old PS1 games.

I think I'd enjoy having a box that did like PS2 at 4k resolution/60fps or something, but I guess that's called a PC with video out to your TV.

RetroArch on the PS Classic is good, but most of the menu optionsnare very obtuse.  It took a lot of trial and error, but I got systems like Saturn, Dreamcast, N64, PSP, etc running on it.  I use a PS4 Hori wired fighting pad and it works well for the most part.  I second Demi's recommended Sandisk drives.  Any other brand was very slow.
