how the fuck did it catch fire anyways? It is easter season so that means lots of heated incense. Maybe it was that.
The towers are safe at least.

Rebuilding it isn't the same. Not that it hadn't been added to/renovated/rebuilt over centuries anyway.
You can't just...rebuild something from the 1100s and act like it's the same thing, ya know?
GLENN BECK (HOST): If this was arson, this is going to be bad. If this was arson of any foreign -- kind of -- any foreign entity, any -- anybody with a grudge, I think if -- if, and this is a huge if -- it might have just been started by a cigarette. We don't know. But if this was started by Islamists, I don't think you'll find out about it, because I think it would set the entire country on fire.
...
This is their World Trade Center moment, and if this was done by terrorists, I think that they will keep it quiet, because -- I just don't think Macron and France wants that internal fight.
MARK STEYN: Christendom is in retreat in Europe, and in France particularly - France has actually quite an aggressive belief in secularism and according to some polls, the French are even by the standards of the modern Western world among the most Godless people in that sense. Three years ago, in that terrible summer that began with the Nice truck killings, when it seemed as if the entire French state was unraveling, I went to Rouen cathedral for the funeral of Hamel, the French priest who had his throat cut at mass. And I went to the basilica of Saint-Denis, which is in the north of Paris where the French kings are buried.
And basically is a Christian museum in the heart of what is now a Muslim suburb in effect. There is no sense of Christianity outside of the walls of that cathedral. And it was after that that I went to then Notre Dame because you do have the sense that a living, breathing faith is just becoming actually a museum. An art gallery. A storage facility. And the French who were on the streets in tears this evening, on the streets of Paris - I don't think they're mourning just history or architecture or art or culture. They are mourning something else. But what that something else post-Christian France can't quite identify it. That's really the conundrum. When Monsieur Macron says we're going to rebuild it - rebuild it for what? When people talk about oh the heart of France has died - what is in the soul of France? What is this? Is it just the building or something more?
even though it's rebuilt, in another few hundred years it will be a vintage again

I hate how everything is a meme now.
So the French companies like Total Oil, Louis Vuitton, Kering (owner of Gucci, Balenciaga, YSL) etc. donated like $700M towards the renovation. Fine, good. But what the hell - is it really that expensive to restore one cathedral? Almost 1 Billion dollars? I thought $100M would be enough.

Meanwhile, in the thread about the photograph of a black hole, you are cheering on all of Filler's hentai memes.

So far, Musk has agreed to donate $480,350
In just a few hours today, 650 million euros was donated to rebuild Notre Dame,” South Africa-based journalist Simon Allison tweeted.1 day ago
Even before the smoke had cleared, luxury goods magnate Francois-Henri Pinault announced his family would donate 100 million euros ($112 million)Not to remain on the sidelines, his rival Bernard Arnault — the chief executive of LVMH and the richest man in Europe — pledged twice that amount on Tuesday morning. The Bettencourt Meyers family, which controls L’Oreal, quickly matched that pledge. And Patrick Pouyanne, chief of executive of French oil giant Total, offered another $112 million.
you're getting fixated on the word billionaires like an one who incoherently screechesy. It's a general critique on how society in general rushes and comes together to repair a relic offWestern European civilization, but the humanitarian crisis in Flint continues for years and years. But keep raging at memes brehPeople donating are doing it to get a return in publicity (and possibly tax breaks), the Notredame burning down had more international visibility.
:rage

Humanitarian crisis (read: poor people dying) all over the world are, essentially, background noise to most people living in developed countries.
Not exactly anything out of the ordinary, although i wouldn't exactly pat these billionaires on the back, for essentially paying for some publicity.
Agra, I just opened my facebook...stop using facebook?
Let’s pretend oh, 700 years from now (if humanity isn’t extinct lol but let’s play pretend) that the Statue of Liberty - a symbol of New York City - is on fire and gets severely damaged. Would you be shocked that a bunch of American trillionaires throw money at something closer to home - considered a world marvel - than they have in a foreign nation with a water issue?

Cindi, you're always annoyed or mad about something. Ignore the bullshit. You don't have to react to everything. I haven't seen anything that you're complaining about outside of this thread.HOW CAN YOU SAY THAT TO HER?!! :era
I mean those memes are apt though: The Catholic church really doesn't need the donation money. They can dismantle the Vatican City if they're that hard-up for cash to rebuild.
Meanwhile, actual US cities have poor/failing water due to lead pipes and billionaire celebs that live in LA won't actually give money to rebuild these places.
It’s funny stro thinks it’s memes in general I hate when I’ve mostly been talking about political memes or viral pics from Facebook or twitter where the person writes some dumbass shit. Stro truly is a dumbass biiiiiiiiiiiaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaatchftfy bb :-[
Varg Vikernes is living in France. Just putting that out there.
