That's the movie the creator made to shit on all his nerdling fans that sent him hate mail after the show's finale.
Is this the original or the remake?
Well it’s not. It’s a great show.
I'm extremely open-minded, but any time someone tried to explain the plot to me it sounds like nonsensical psychobabble gobbledegook. It's a coming of age story at heart. Don't sweat the details.

End of Evangelion is a great film however.
I'm not sure Eva knockoffs being of shitty quality is something you can pin on Eva itself though.
the original dub was one of the better dubs.
I can't believe they got rid of "I'm so fucked up." It was one of the most iconic lines in the entire series :'(
Yeah it's from EoE. Way better than "I'm the lowest of the low."I can't believe they got rid of "I'm so fucked up." It was one of the most iconic lines in the entire series :'(
Wasn't this only in End of Eva to begin with?
All the cryptic nonsense is just bait. You gain no greater insight into anything by deciphering it.
Enjoy the robot battles and broken adults dumping the fate of the world on traumatized teens.
They apparently redubbed it. I'm curious, but this seems unnecessary on its face, the original dub was one of the better dubs.

“Anno knew a guy from King Records named Otsuki, and as the story goes, the two were out drinking one day when Otsuki suggested to Anno that they work on an anime television project together. Anno agreed on the spot, came back to the office and promptly announced it to everyone. Nobody even batted an eyelash. We just accepted it without further thought.”

Gainax didn't make any of the Rebuild movies, that was all Studio Khara [which ones the rights to Eva through its founder, Hideki Anno]. Gainax is pretty much dead and has been for a nearly a decade.

Brain-drain killed them. Anno left and took people with him to form Khara, Imaishi left and took people with him to form Trigger. They've barely got anybody left to make the kinds of shows that they used to.

Basically, there was a Sega Saturn game released at the same time that acted as a bridge between the series and the movie
I mean I'm pretty certain Evangelion had a lot of canon massive details (including a whole plot of precursor aliens behind the Angels or somesuch) gated in a videogame (Girlfriend of Steel ?).
Yeah the overarching cosmic plot is a lot of window dressing to the actual drama when you start looking at it not as an excited when but it was a pretty big deal.

I don't think the roughness of Evangelion excludes it from greatness. If anything to me that roughness is what separates the show from most anime. That roughness is what makes the show have personality and feel like more then a simple commercial product. Of which it is and for sure has become, but I watch Evangelion every so often. That last time I watched it was when the blu ray rips came out and it was amazing. But I was also surprised like I have been before that the first half is also great. Now as a teen I liked the 2nd half because oh that's where it gets weird. People often see the first half as "oh just typical mecha" and it is. It has it's monster of the week crap, but even the first half the characterization is strong. I'm not going to use the lame word of "deconstruction", but it does read like a show crated by people who grew up with mecha anime and are playing with the conventions and thinking to themselves "man it would actually suck to be the teen forced to pilot this crap by the mad scientist father" and from there you have characters like Misato and so on that feel real and have actual relatable problems. It's one of the few anime that to me has actual characters with actual adult issues. Now don't get me wrong, it's still a geeky pop culture show about robots, but there's lots of nuance and good storytelling in the show. People get lost in the symbolism and what does it all mean and that stuff is all shallow bullshit. Meant to be stage dressing for the themes the concepts allow the show to explore. The Human Completion project is whatever, but not what the themes it conveys are. It's a show about people unable to be close to each other, because getting close is really hard. I don't know, every time I watch it I think it's anime honestly above other anime. You see shows try to do the Rei and Asuka shit, but they are not waifus in Eva. Yeah they were marketed as such after the fact, but Rei is creepy. Shinji is drawn to her for weird reasons. It's not romantic, he's kind of jealous and also weirded out by her. You are not supposed to want to fuck Asuka, she is a messed up girl. Misato is a character constantly worried if she's trash or not, this is'nt attractive. Is this the original or the remake?
By remake do you mean the reedited episodes that were in the anniversary boxset or... ?Well it’s not. It’s a great show.
I'm a big Eva slut but I'm not sure I would call it a great show, objectively. There's a lot there and it's an important one, to be sure. The animation and drawing style are not among the best or most distinctive, budget cutting is pretty obvious at points. The story and tone goes off the rails somewhere after the midway point. The mecha/kaiju/1960-1970 homage & super cool SF visuals of that fortress city of the first half of the series has always been a joy in rewatch : it's light, it's spot on, it has just the right amount of weird ideas, playful grandiloquence and genre perversions Gainax excels at. Once everything (both in the story and actual show production) start going into that abyss of despair, it's really hit-and-miss in execution no matter how thought-provoking, subversive and intellectually interesting it can be. It's not the best thing Gainax did, it's maybe not even their best TV show.
Now, granted, the series turning dysfunctional and mad is what makes it so distinctive and a memorable flawed jewel instead of a serviceable above average show. But it's maybe not for everyone. And that TV ending... It's a wee bit shite in hindsight. Not-writing-death-threats-to-the-creator shite (well nothing is, really, but you get the point) bit it's pretty obvious it's the botched result of a team that wrote itself in a corner while running out of steam and money. I'm not in any way spiteful about it, failure is part of creation and it's what makes Evangelion what it is but I think fans tend to have a pretty heavy rose tinted pair of glasses to be able to see it and think it's a writing master plan imbued with philosophical wisdoms for the ages.
End of Evangelion is a great film however.
Why would anyone waste time with this when there are far better mecha shows, like Gurren Laggan or Code Geass?:beli
Gundam highs are seldom matched yes but there many lows.
Season 1 of Iron Blooded Orphans is the best overall mecha content IMO. They kind of fucked up season 2 though.
Best Gundam is 0080.:snob
Sticks the landing of the series core message more than any Gundam, classic heartbreaking Tomino story, and only 6 episodes.
Gundam talk is invading the Eva thread. Seal Central Dogma and flood the tunnels with bakelite.
So I decided to go ahead and rewatch the series. 9 episodes in, and I don't hate it this time. I actually kind of like it at times.

Apparently, a few years back Funimation took some liberties with 3.0's translation and Khara was pretty peeved when they found out about it, they sent in their own people to change it. And that's what happened here, they wanted the translation done a very specific way and they made sure they got it.
Maybe the new dub just makes Shinji sound older, and thus hotter, or maybe I don't have a headache this time around, but after 13 episodes it is definitely my favorite show.Glad you ended up enjoying this show!

I think the opposite should be written tbh. Hating Eva seemed pretty cool for a long time, and then it was dying down and GL came out and fair or not people made comparisons and the backlash kinda got reignited again.
And recently of course "Literally everyone hates 3.0. If you like it, you're wrong." :doge
I've seen far more people needing to defend Eva than vice versa. Like, it's pretty easy to pick on the series. There's a lot of goofy and batshit stuff that is laughable out of context, and oh yeah who doesn't love a good "GET BACK IN THE ROBOT SHINJI!!!" meme reference.
Evangelion is a classic example of something I like but don’t exactly love. I recall for nearly half a decade it was regarded the best anime ever and I ended up getting an ending where people surround the main character offering congratulations. I like the character drama, the brokenness of their personalities, and the the mecha action but it remains in my eyes the most overrated anime of all time. Evangelion still musters strong emotions even years later it seems.
On a personal note, I attribute Evangelion with the sharp decline in Japanese storytelling after its release. Where writers were obsessed with throwing in random Latin words they thought were deep and cryptic mythos similar to Eva. They started to drift from classic storytelling and more into thinking that the more “deep” a story is (and by depth they meant a lot of confusing, esoteric elements that may or may not hold relevance to the main story) to be better than something well told.
All though it remains my favorite Final Fantasy, FFVIII is an example of post-Evangelion “isn’t this deep?” fuckery. Or, as much as I love it, Xenogears. Compare FFVI’s near perfect storytelling to FFVII and VIII’s more convoluted approach and ask which one is better. You can tell they are clearly inspired by Evangelion even if it’s just bits and pieces.
Ergo, Evangelion ruined Japanese storytelling.
Despite my criticism I still like Evangelion. My critique sounds harsh, and it is, but it’s hard to separate how I like Eva and how I feel about its legacy.

“Everyone has always been mad about Evangelion,” she said, sounding weary. “This is the way of the world.”
I am done with the series and the movie. The last act is the best part. I reject the controversy that the show falls off. The show dispensed with its pretense and embraced what it was actually about rather than cater to the viewer with one last cool battle for the fate of the planet. The instrumentation episodes, and the instrumentation scenes that made it into the movie, are some of the best purely psychological experiences to have ever been written for tv. And what genius storytelling, too. Inner dialogue is everywhere, but how many stories go to the extreme lengths of exhaustively explaining character psyches with methodical pairwise encounters, forcing them into the closest proximity possible, with no way to withhold secrets or their most intimate thoughts? This pure vulnerability and relentless mutual interrogation is just as intense as any of the near death experiences that happened during the rest of the show, and that is a high bar to match. The explanation of the hedgehog's dilemma was the perfect way to ease the viewer into this climactic confrontation. Fuyutsuki said (twice ::)) that man's greatest enemy would be man itself. Well, Shinji's greatest enemy ended up being everyone he was closest to (and himself). That's deep, yo. And not fake deep, but poignant and universal in multitudinous ways.
This is a flawless show and an indelible experience. It's one of those consequential pieces of art you will feel deeply grateful for having had the opportunity to experience. Like LOST.

Evangelion 2 on PS2 is considered the first/only source for much of the entire original series backstory.
What's neat reading up on all it however is how much the fans had guessed correctly long before it released, but had given different names (as you would expect.)
The series and movies are definitely, obviously made "on the fly" but I have to be impressed at the overall consistency to the series' mythology given that.
How much of the mythology and plot were done ad hoc isn't really relevant; the fact that Anno was able to "fill in the cracks" so to speak with the PS2 game so definitively and in such a neat package speaks to a level of detail-oriented genius. Put another way, lesser writers may have felt "written into a corner." But not Anno, he tried (eventually) explaining (some) stuff anyways.
On Netflix Japan it apparently has "Fly Me to the Moon" for the ED.

Rei is probably the one i dislike the most, but maybe she's like that because Shinji's father is perving on her, so i won't judge yet. :doge
Through osmosis, i got that everybody hates Shinji for being a bitch, but so far, his reaction seemed fairly reasonable to me, guy got basically scammed into the frontline.

Xenogears definitely has a solid amount of Eva influence. Aside from the religious themes, you could say that Id is kind of similar to Unit 01's 400% synch state. And IIRC, Krelian is basically pursuing instrumentality.

While answering an ad in Animage magazine calling for animators for Hayao Miyazaki's 1984 sophomore feature Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Anno would impress Miyazaki so much that he was put in charge of one of the most difficult sequences in the movie: the God Warrior's attack sequence. He would subsequently spend almost every waking hour at Studio Topcraft's offices for the duration of his involvement (the film's complete production would run roughly nine months, and be fraught with borderline-disasters and complications), and would grow so close with Miyazaki that their friendship endures to the present day.

I like the episode where Shinji and Asuka have to train with DDR.
Also, something I'm a bit confused on, it seems Anno took the swerve into moving away from the mythology angle into exploring depression in the last few episodes "midway through development".
Is there any interviews out there on how late in production it was decided on? It seems wild to see how well they appropriated the reoccurring scenes in the last few episodes if they really did it in the 11th hour.

I'm sure an EvaHead has some interview ready ? But I don't think the switch was that drastic or sudden at the production level. The tone doesn't so much shift than drift. My fanwank is that narrative expediency and budget issues (perhaps in part caused by a change in priorities) accounts for quite a bit in the individual pacing of episodes getting a bit erratic towards the end.

Comparing the Netflix dub and sub - the dub is so much better. Funimation dubs were completely unlistenable. The Netflix dub also totally fixes the stilted speech in the subs. I tried watching with subtitles on for a few scenes with the dubbed audio and some of the sentences are truly bizarre. Watch with dubs.

ADV dubbed the original; Funimation has only handled the Rebuild movies. The latter have most of the same cast as the original ADV dub, but much better direction. (Plus, the VAs had grown a lot since then too.)

The oyster bar I drank at in Japan for a run of 4 nights with a group of friends was a blast, but all 4 nights they were playing the Rebuild movies on repeat on a projector despite the clientele.
The first ten minutes of Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 will be livestreamed worldwide this Saturday, July 6th at 8:15pm Japan time. (https://www.reddit.com/r/evangelion/comments/c82myz/the_3010_preview_is_being_livestreamed_july_6th/)

But it confirms the "reddenning" for lack of a better term from Near-Third Impact is somehow reversible by humans. Which makes it curious that the Japanese NERV HQ was still affected by it. :thinking[close]
I hate the Rebuild movies. Just so much dumb looking shit.
All the cryptic nonsense is just bait. You gain no greater insight into anything by deciphering it.

Misato started as the best character, and kept the crown, but i also like Ritsuko and her relationship with Ikari.
Ritsuko is a good character yeah, and I think her mommy issues are more interesting on the screen than Misato (being much more material).Yes, although the little they show of him in the Prof's flashback, it's kind of intriguing in itself.
Gendo Ikari is sort of a control freak black sun, he's only interesting when contrasted with everyone interacting with him (Ritsuko esp.). He really is The Man, man.
Misato will always be the sane cultured man's choiceYou're not supposed to want to fuck any of them, they are all fundamentally broken in some way.

Shit happened in ep24 that made Shinji the way he was in EoE, I would think...Yeah however seeing as how 25 and 26 tell the same story (more or less) the transition from 24 to 25/26, compared to the transition from 24 to EoE (character-wise) for Shinji, felt more natural to me.
As for talking vs. showing, I generally agree, but there really isn't much dialog in the last third, and the sandbox scene is baffling yet intriguing.
Live action shots worked because it was still fictional characters in a "fictional" setting. Some of the text was from IRL death threats, but the live action scenes have their own story:Well, anything is inherently fictional, by the show's own words, once it gets interpreted by one own's mind, and becomes part of their internal "reality" :-*; but i'll say the dude giving the thumbs up to the camera, in one of those theater shots counts, as breaking the 4th wall. :doge
https://youtu.be/cwBs3VsNfdY
So it wasn't necessarily breaking any kind of fourth wall, instead showing how different and alien alternate realities could be.
Friendly Reminder: The span of time between the first episode of Evangelion and Evangelion 1.0 was ~12 years. This is almost the same amount of time that's passed between Evangelion 1.0's release and now.
It's not just about Kaworu. I think some reflection on what Shinji goes through between episodes 19 (da best episode) and 25 is called for. When Shinji talks to Kaji in Episode 19, that's the last time until the movie that Shinji mans up and decides for himself that he has a responsibility to pilot Evas - even though only bad things ever happen to him while he does. It's all downhill from there, significantly worse than the stress he went through for the first 75% of the show. He's stuck in quantum limbo for a month. Asuka becomes comatose. Rei dies in front of him. Everyone in the GeoFront is evacuated - the only normal part of his life (school, having non-NERV friends) disappears. Kaji dies. Misato becomes completely emotionally distant because of that. Shinji finds out that the new Rei is a clone. He has everything in his life taken away from him all over again just after he decided that he would put up with being a pilot for the sake of humanity.Yeah it's why i'm saying i need a rewatch, 'cause in the second half there's so much shit you're trying to pay attention to, that i feel like i want to watch it again to digest it better.
That's the context of episode 24. He has nothing, and then suddenly he has a friend. And then he has to kill his friend. It's like killing the only possibility of him having a life outside of Nerv with any semblance of emotional closeness to someone else. So given that, I didn't feel a disconnect between ep 24 and the movie's despondent, defeated Shinji. That would break any kid.
What the fuck is wrong with you people? This show had no fucking ending. No one warned me the last two episodes are complete gibberish. I get that they needed long monologues to save animation budget but they don't explain a fucking thing. Fuck this show, I'm having to google what, how and why everything happened.

Watched the first two episodes and that scene where old boy nuts for Asuka.

Interested in the rest of the series, but I though the sexy time anime shot was sort of over the top even in the first 2 episodes. Like the adult chick that Shinji is staying with leaning over the table at him and shit.

Instead of all this remaking, 3.0+1.0=4.0, "you will (NOT) advance" shit that confuses my blue collar brain.
Wait, there's more to watch after EoE? Give me a quick guide/rundown.
There are 4 movies [1.0, 2.0, 3.0, and 3.0+1.0]. The first movie is basically a remake of the first third of the series. The second movie is basically a remake of the middle third of the series. The third movie goes in a very different direction. Nobody really knows how things are going to play out in the fourth movie.
End of Eva is a pretty definite ending.
yeah the first movie is basically shot for shot so far, wondering if I should skip to the third.

Gendo's only concerned with reuniting with his waifu (i.e. chaotic instrumentality) whereas SEELE is either concerned with evolving all of humanity or becoming Cymeks (depending on whether or not you consider the Playstation 2 game canon).
I didn't think it was to make sure they were still alive, I thought that Shinji was still overwhelmed by his vulnerability and his violent rage toward her because of her rejection of him during instrumentation.
The FU to fans thing is an urban legend. The dub is not at all "literal", unless you're referring to the 1:1 use of show specific terminology, like "third children" which IS kept in tact for the first time. The actual phrasing and dialogue outside of show specific terminology is well localized. Accurate, but still localized.
She keeps saying “you always come to me because it’s easy” but Shinji never really came to anyone.
I also didn’t get the sense that only Asuka and shinji came back. But I guess it never really says either way.

I guess I just mean the dub is not as good as the new one then. There are a number of parts where it goes into anime robotic phrasing that’s sounds unnatural. Especially when they start talking about instrumentality stuff near the end, but also the way Asuka talks about her mom being in the Eva. It just falls a little flat because the phrasing is weird.

I had a mega huge carepost about how good the tv ending was THAT NO ONE LIKED :busta but the tl;dr is that while EoE is a cooler movie that does everything good, the final two episodes had the more impactful depiction of instrumentation, the psychological aspects of the main characters, etc. Watching EoE's instrumentation monologues after I had just seen the original finale left me wanting.

I thought Ritsuko’s mom was in one of the magi?
I’m pretty sure Eva-00 is actually Rei #1’s soul. There’s an exchange in one of the first episodes where people think unit 00 is trying to kill rei but Ritsuko is like “I know it’s trying to kill me” and then when they show the Eva view of the situation Ritsuko has black hair like her mom indicating that she might think Ritsuko is her mom.

After reading this, I became convinced it was Rei I’s soul there’s a fair amount of supporting evidence over multiple episodes:
- it wanting to kill Roku two
- Shinji sees rei in Unit-00 when he syncs with it
- rei says something about “the other me, the one in the Eva” at some point.

Regarding the guidelines for Evangelion fan creations that were announced the other day, we feel the need to add some clarification because a part of it was taken out of context, distorting the intent.
Firstly, the guidelines were not created to “censor” or “prohibit” the contents encompassed by fan activities. We believe that fan activities sprout from positive feelings and a desire to support the work, and we have been supported by fans for a long time. In the past, we have never once asked an existing fan activity to censor or desist. Our stance and way of thinking will not change.
We released the guidelines because we thought that it was necessary to create basic principles so that all fans can enjoy their activities with peace of mind. We left vague wording in some parts to give fans as much leeway as possible to freely pursue their activities. It might be a little difficult, but we ask that each person reads the original document for themselves, and after thinking about the contents carefully, to take responsibility for themselves and continue their activities.
We have received numerous queries, but as a rule, we cannot provide personalized responses regarding the practical application of the guidelines.
It is our utmost wish that fans in the community do not restrict each other’s works.

Edit- Ahem. It's really quite a bop.
Pretty good. Not necessarily loving the chorus "oh oh oh" aspect. Or maybe that it's so forefront and meant to be the hook rather than just accenting things. I can’t stand these movies and the spoilers make it sound even more shit than 3.0.
Hopefully this is it for Eva. It certainly seems like Anno got whatever he needed out.
Yeah I k ow that and that looks good.
What I meant was that going by the spoilers, 4.0 seems to have a very personal message. So hopefully with getting that out there Anno never feels the need to return to Eva.
Though obviously at some point there will be another Evangelion. But maybe there won’t since Anno is pretty much in control of it.
A manga adaptation sounds creatively bankrupt. An adaptation of any previous material sounds lame.
10 years from now I wouldn’t mind a new Evangelion from a new young creative team creating a unique spin that carries on the spirt and themes. Having maybe a loose connection. Like Diebuster to Gunbuster.

Each time you do get to the chorus there is more being added in the instrumental which is something I really like.spoiler (click to show/hide)I mean I can't deny that I adore Sakura Nagashi (the theme from Eva 3.0) leaps and bounds over this new track[close]
There was talk of a second "secret" theme by Utada, similar to how KH3 ended up with both Face My Fears and Don't Think Twice. Not sure if that panned out?
There's a newly recorded version of Beautiful World that's also included on the One Last Kiss EP, I've got it on Amazon Music Unlimited so I'm guessing it's everywhere else.
QuoteUpdate: Hikaru Utada's new single "One Last Kiss" is also delayed from its January 27 release date. Source: Music Natalie (https://natalie.mu/music/news/412467)
