I spend 95% of my Switch gaming time in handheld mode with sound and vibration disabled. If I didn't already own a unit then this would be a great fit for me.

Yep, almost all my time is spent in handheld mode. That yellow is mighty tempting, but I can't justify a second switch.

Compact (:lol), dedicated to handheld gaming - because good old Ninty is so cheap, they had to save a couple bucks on a USB-C port :lol

It actually does look like it still has a usb-c port.

I’m sort of surprised how aggressive in price this is. Knowing Nintendo I expected $250

3DS is still $150 so if you look at it that way, this is an easy upgrade. The Switch soc already has usb-c on it so it's weird to remove the docking feature of it. I assume it still uses that to charge? I'm pretty pleased with my base level Switch so I don't see a need to change to this or the high powered one that is supposed to exist.

No HDMI out is DoA for me dawg :goty

And I really wanted a more portable Switch for Animal Crossing :goty2

I hate hauling the current hulking monstrosity around and having to treat it so delicately :-\

My 3DS XL is the perfect size and a fucking tank :rejoice

3DS is still $150 so if you look at it that way, this is an easy upgrade.

Not only that, 3DS released at $250, and then the big ambassador price drop put it at $180... And that's just $20 less than the Switch Lite. And Nintendo was likely losing money on the 3DS at that price vs. likely breaking even on Switch Lite.

I think this is going to do gangbusters in Japan, especially when they start putting out more "special" consoles like they always do.

As much as I would try, not sure I could resist an Animal Crossing one if the design is tasteful...

The Switch soc already has usb-c on it so it's weird to remove the docking feature of it. I assume it still uses that to charge?

It uses it for charging but the Switch dock itself has some kind of hardware DRM/special sauce to make video output work, so they took the lazy route of not even bothering to integrate that stuff into the main unit...

I like the smaller size and actual d-pad a lot, but no TV-out kills it for me.  Makes me glad I got some modded joycons with a d-pad replacement now.

Would be tempted to still get one if having two Switches with the same profile means it auto-cloud syncs save files, I suppose, but still pointless in the end.  Guess let's see if the supposed 'pro' model turns up next.

Also- I hope this means Nintendo makes their own left joycon with a d-pad now.  :doge

There already are smaller docks and mods to take the Nintendo dock and make it smaller, which this unit would fit onto.  Guess we'll find out, but it wouldn't make sense for Nintendo to say it doesn't work with HDMI-out only for it to actually do so. :thinking

I thought all the games support cloud saves on Switch?

Switch does not have a save management system (outside of deletion.) Certain games support Cloud Saves -- a paid feature as part of Nintendo Switch Online. Otherwise, if you damage or lose your system, you're fucked.

Additionally, games can opt out of supporting Cloud Saves, and frequently do if they have a significant online component (ex. Splatoon 2 and Pokemon Let's Go) in order to prevent "cheating." This is the current reasoning on why Animal Crossing: New Horizons will not support Cloud Saves.

I signed the petition (https://www.change.org/p/nintendo-ask-nintendo-to-allow-backup-game-saves-in-animal-crossing-new-horizons?utm_content=cl_sharecopy_16217004_en-US%3Av7&recruiter=516073784&recruited_by_id=7f717fa0-f2e7-11e5-a870-4d7fe568894c&utm_source=share_petition&utm_medium=copylink&utm_campaign=psf_combo_share_initial&share_bandit_exp=initial-16217004-en-US&share_bandit_var=v1) because I disagree; there is literally no save file as important as the one for Animal Crossing to an Animal Crossing player.

Would be cool if you could mod an existing Switch dock so this fit, and then see if it hopefully just works at that point... :thinking

Precautionary warning type thing I would guess.

My full size switch lasts 3 hours on a good day. It's already unacceptable, so this thing would drive me insane. Reminds me of OG 3ds.

The Nintendo comparison seems to suggest the battery on the mini will last longer though.

It says like 4 hours for Zelda BOTW.

200 is still too much for its library that makes it feel like a retro console, but now a fair price for the hardware is achievable in the used market and in sales. Either way, no option for any TV connection through some loose cable is dumb, even PSP did that.  :doge

Unlikely considering this is probably on a smaller manufacturing process and therefore would increase less heat than the og Switch.

It's probably more of a price thing. Include a dock and they can't price it at 200$. I wonder why it's not available as an accessory, but maybe they don't want it to to lool like a bad deal if the cost would be to similar which the accessory included compared to the og switch.

I had a WiiU and normal mainstream consoles prior, so the amount of games that aren't old shit to me is extremely limited on Switch :yeshrug Maybe total fanboys get a hard-on for Diablo 3 and Pokken or Final Fantasy 8 or whatever, but I'd only be in for Odyssey and Luigi 3 so far, so anything above 150 bucks is still  :holeup

Does this thing still allow a bajillion controllers to connect to it? Smaller screen might make that hard anyway but that would be the real shitty part

Seems like you can connect joycons and such but uh yeah no charging them on it obviously so you’d need a charge stand... this is for babbys

You can still pair other controllers with it AFAIK.

It's made for portable use- if I didn't play docked so much, I'd totally get this because I don't care about HD rumble and I never remove the joycons from the sides anyway.  It should be more ergonomic and lighter.  It looks even more like the Vita 2.0 now.  :P

And yeah, the cheaper price means more kid-friendly.  Right on time for Poke-e-mans.  They're gonna sell shitloads of these things.

That said, while it's not that big of a deal, it is nice to be able to remove the joycons on the O.G. model for if no other reason than replacing them if they break.  No need to send it in for repairs and whatnot.

Then again, it'll sell a fuck ton to kiddo's upgrading their 3DS's and people double dipping for a Switch that's easier to carry around.

The design, unlike the Switch, looks very classic cheap Nintendo.

What is cheap Nintendo? In my experience Nintendo has the most reliable consoles for sure.

I have never had a Nintendo anything that broke outside of reasonable wear and tear. Even like my N64 controllers that were used by a suite full of college kids to play mario kart and goldeneye non stop for a year still worked, even if the analog sticks were loose.

I’ve had playstations that only worked upside down, or had PS4 controllers where the triggers broke in a year. And have sent at least 2 xboxes in to be replaced under warranty.

I had an OG game boy survive having batteries inserted backwards that exploded while playing, cartridges survive being dropped in the toilet and left outside, and a good friend had a snes survive his cat pissing in it.

Cheap as in, the design and materials used. Nintendo's stuff is reliable I give you that but the Switch was the sexiest piece of hardware they made since maybe the GameBoy Micro.
The Wii U essentially looked like a Fisher Price toy.

I would've loved it if they had named it "Game Boy Switch" or something.  :heart

If Switch still kept saves on carts & everything was physical like 3ds, this would be nice.

But with Nintendo’s crap online and buying most Switch games digital, I feel like swapping between this and docked switch for games would be a pain in the ass.

I'm a little surprised they went with a handheld only model since that goes against the devices name. Having an actual dpad is good. Everything else I'm non plussed with but this thing is clearly not made with me in mind. IF they let saves be used across consoles this could be appealing for some people to double dip but that's not happening cause it's how several previous systems were hacked.

It's like Tasty mentioned- not all the games are backed up anyway, so it wouldn't work.  You'd have to transfer your account over each time-- Pain in the ass for sure.  Oh well, makes not buying one that much easier.  If they do something to change this or someone finds a way to dock it, might buy.

Gonna LOL hard if the hacking community finds out that they just disabled something to stop it from working with docks.  :doge

The regular switch is really big and has a really, really low battery life.

I can't really commit to any Switch games knowing that I can't play it away from a television screen for more than a couple hours without needing a full charge.

Would love to play Chocobo Mystery Dungeon, but I can't imagine sitting in front of a giant bigscreen for it.

A $20 external battery backup will get you enough to run for like 10+ hours

I'm seeing cooling vents; does it have a fan?

The O.G. Switch has cooling vents too.   Assuming it's the same fan or fans?

How is that Hori joycon with the d-pad?

It feels/works nicely, but note that it has no rumble or any kind of wireless features, so you have to use it attached to the Switch- won't work if you want to use your joycons like a stand-alone controller.

IIRC people complained that it drained the Switch battery faster, but I think this may have been fixed for the U.S. release?  I haven't really used mine much because of the modded d-pad joycons I have.

Here are the US launch prices for major handhelds.

Game Boy: $89.99
Game Boy Color: $69.99
Game Boy Advance : $99.99
Nintendo DS: $149.99
Nintendo 3DS: $249.99

And:

PlayStation Portable: $249.99
PlayStation VITA: $249.99

So going over $200 is pretty much the graveyard for handheld mass appeal. Even the OG 3DS at $180 was pushing it pretty high for what is essentially a kids' system (https://lain.wiki/wiki/KIDS).

With regards t210b01's improvements, higher clocks and lower voltages suggest a drop from a 20nm processor design down to 16nm FinFET instead - but Tegra X1 was always an outlier, a production chip running on an experimental fabrication process Nvidia never chose to pursue for its mainstream GPUs - and I wonder if the firm is following the same procedure with its replacement, mitigating the cost of exploring 7nm technology by sharing costs with Nintendo. Only a teardown of the new Switch revision(s) will give us the physical dimensions that allow us to firmly identify how the t210b01/t214 is manufactured, but the increase in clocks seen in the DVFS tables would likely favour 16nmFF, a mature process and a good fit for a mass-produced console.

20nm -> 16nm

It's just a brand name...? And it's a hell of a lot better than "3DS" and "Wii U." IMO their naming is back on track after like 15 years of misses and near-misses.

Better "Switch Lite" than "Nintendo 2DS XXLi New Edition."

The thing plays Switch games, it's a Switch.

This also still supports table top mode (split screen and multiple controllers) just without a kickstand.

This goes back to when the Switch was announced and everyone here was hella skeptical, cause it seems like people just couldn't fathom something like the Switch Lite existing. Meanwhile people who knew Nintendo's game plan (which should honestly be everyone, because they keep doing it so much it's basically gaming history) knew that this was coming.

Want a Switch Mini.

Integrated, non-detachable Joycons, maybe clamshell design?

Smaller form factor (~4.5" screen.)

No dock in the package.

$149.

My only problem with the 2DS is the weird ergonomics of the triggers and the "door-stop" thickness. If they actually fixed that, it'd be fine. I like mine, but the hand-cramps are pretty bad.

199$ for half the functionality is still too much for me though (especially since Mario Odyssey is the only game out, i'm interested in).

The Lite is also going to appeal to a lot of people in Japan who are on trains for long periods of time every day- have even seen a few 'industry types' saying this is what it was made for- I don't think Nintendo is that stupid that they'd make new hardware for just one country anymore, but that's just me I guess.

Is this still considered a Switch then??

It's just a brand name...? And it's a hell of a lot better than "3DS" and "Wii U." IMO their naming is back on track after like 15 years of misses and near-misses.

I thought "3DS" was good- it's the DS successor, made in the same design style, still plays DS games, and is 3D.  Makes sense.  "2DS" is where it gets confusing- it's obvious why they called it that...but it also makes it sound like a previous generation of the console, lol.

Good Nintendo getting more of that Japanese market. Also the first Nintendo handheld since gba micro that doesn’t have a clam shell. Rip to clam shell handhelds. :( The DS is truly over and now I weep.

I see a lot of similarities to the 2DS with the Switch Lite-- despite the 2DS being a clear downgrade over the original and designed to be cheaper for kids, there were still people foaming at the mouth over it and saying it was better than the 3DS models at the time because it was more comfortable.  Never mind that it didn't close or had a mono speaker and no 3D.

On Twitter I've seen some "STOP TELLING PEOPLE THAT U DON'T LIKE THE SWITCH LITE DESIGN IT'S NOT MADE 4 U!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" stan-defense posts with way too many likes.  "DON'T CRITICIZE PRODUCT!!!!!!!"   :gun :punch

Nintendo stuff (games especially) holds it value far better than Sony or MS stuff.

I usually buy Nintendo games day 1, because there’s not much point in waiting 3 months. Wait 3-6 months on basically any game on PlayStation/Xbox and you can get it for half price somewhere.

Pre-owner breath of the wild is still like $40 on eBay. And it was a launch game.

Luigi 3 and Cuphead as a physical collectable were peaking my interest, but at this point it should be better to wait until something like Bayo 3 hits and/or when the Mini is like a hundred bucks on ebay.

This announcement made me check the library again and it's an even bigger dumpster fire than I thought  :camby https://www.gamerankings.com/browse.html?site=switch&cat=0&year=0&numrev=0&sort=0&letter=&search= Sorting out a majority (but not all) of its redundant ports by only searching for high review counts and this looks WiiU-tier.

Luigi 3 and Cuphead as a physical collectable were peaking my interest, but at this point it should be better to wait until something like Bayo 3 hits and/or when the Mini is like a hundred bucks on ebay.

wow very interesting, thanks for sharing

Switch really gives me “playin with my old brick gameboy in a tree” vibes when I play it in my hammock, can’t wait to really stroke that nostalgia boner when the LA remake comes out, I used to beat it like once a day in the summer eating plums in a plum tree.

By the way, the d-pad placement is wrong. It should be above the left stick, on the same level as the face buttons on the right. Basically like PS Vita or Wii U Pro Controller.

Since preorders are up I grabbed one for the Pokemon version on Amazon. Dunno if I'll keep it but it's usually good to grab one in case it's looking to be rare. They sold out in like a minute so that's a good sign.

Unless you plan to never play on a TV, I'd wait for the regular one with the better battery. Or if you have really small hands cause the Lite looks to be a good bit smaller of a device all around.

Funny because many switch owners say switch has way, way too many games and I believe them.

So did Velveta owners, and they ran like shit (15FPS Ninja Gaiden. MMMMMMMMMMMMMM) or were ported to PC a year before/later.

I mean, if you love your Shitch: Cool. More power to you, but let's not beat around the bush and not say the system is an underpowered P.O.S. that gets some pretty bad ports (Hi, Bloodstained) that Nintendo fans lick the shit from because "muh first time playing it!"

There's tons of games... if you're 12 y/o or the kind of fekkit that didn't have any of the other 20 platforms that played Resident Evil 5 in the last decade (and long realized it's shit anyway). And which probably offer it at a fraction of the Switch port's price right now :nope
There's a few things I thought I'd rather play on a handheld, like Capcom Beat'Em'Up Bundle, but the exclusives still can't justify the thing and everything else is just too expensive considering it's almost all retro. Rather get Megadrive Mini for a little more than the price of whatever single full priced 10 y/o Switch port.

e: also gotta wait on what deficits the new hardware is showing down the line.

The dark, dark secret of the Switch is that people gushing about "all these games" just want to play them on a handheld, because they are bad people with bad taste that should feel bad. The Switch's library is like 3 great exclusives (Fire Emblem, Mario Odyssey, and Breath of the Wild but I mean I guess you could count the weeeeooo version whatever) and a bunch of ports and indie jank, it's just that people like playing shit on handhelds for some ungodly reason.

The dark, dark secret of video games in general this gen is that each platform only has a couple* of great exclusives. IDK I guess if you're into soulsborne games, Bloodborne is a great game you can only play on PS4. I am not, so ymmv. Other people really liked HZD, I thought it was ok. Dad of War? I bought it for $20 and haven't opened it yet. With the HD consoles you're really just paying for a box that will play multiplat stuff in higher resolutions on your teevee. I mostly game on my pc.

*not counting the Xbone, which has none lol

Very much agree with pretty much everything that you said, but I think Nintendo has just knocked it out of the park with their fist-party games and exclusives.  YMMV and all that.  Sony went really downhill this gen IMO.  Their Japan Studio feels like its barely there and then all their western games are "AAA" cinematic third-person action games and :zzz.  I like me some Uncharted but that's all I was able to get into.

And then Microsoft...uh- I appreciate not having to bother with an Xbone since just about everything is on PC, but...where are their games not called "Forza?"  Not even sure I want to bother with Woke-Gears anyway.

Microsoft first party is like most Netflix originals.
Fun for a short time but nothing memorable and talent goes to waste.

Just look at Control vs. the Microsoft produced Quantum Break. Which by the way was named "Control" because Remedy themselves are in Control of the direction.
Hell, not even a god tier developer like Hideki Kamiya could finish a game with Microsoft looking over his shoulder.

But they got Sea of Thieves. Hey, did you guys play Sea of Thieves yet? There's some real Thieving in the Seas!

All the Microsoft chine first party games feel sort of “off” like they decided to try to cheap out on the production values or something.

I can put my finger on exactly what elements make them feel cheaply done, but they always have this sort of shovelware quality to things that aren’t central to the game play.

Like the voice acting is bad, the menus are ugly, the interface kind of sucks, etc.

Sony 1st party stuff is just very safe and sort of uninteresting. Lots of graphical spectacle over so-so games. In truth I could do without the first party contributions of either console this gen. Nintendo is the only one making good first Party games anymore.
