Title: NHL 2019-2020: Skatin' Through Salt
Post by: Tasty on September 16, 2019, 02:46:29 PM
Closing the book on last season like (https://i.imgur.com/VKCAsqJ.gif)

Preseason starting today is a nice birthday gift. :leon

We finally got McAvoy locked down. :whew

Still.... just one goddamn game from the cup. :beli

But you know what they say, when you fall off a horse, you pick yourself up, and you eat that horse. :mouf

Red Wings win. Took over the first period and then were able to hold on while never trailing. Preds came alive in the last two periods, but those first 20 minutes did them in. Undefeated still baby

Yeah I know that the Wings are gonna miss the playoffs this year. That was known from day -127. What I didn't know was that I was going to have to put up with a 7 game stretch where the team couldn't put more than 2 pucks in the net per game. Like holy hell guys. I haven't watched this 7 game losing streak, but my god if I caught half of these games I'd be sighing eternally during the week.

This stretch of Red Wings hockey is literally the worst I have ever witnessed as a fan of this team. Really dire  :yuck

Neat article about various little things in the NHL from the players perspectives. All anonymous though.

Wings are kinda middling right now, there's far worse dumpster fires in the league at the moment.

Speaking of, that offsides call leading to the Habs' victory the other night was utter BS, I don't care if you're a fan or hater of either team.

The more stuff like that happens the worse the game is to watch. Why even have linesmen at this point?

Tasty, I don't think you understand.

Look at the goal differentials in these games since the Wings lost to the Leafs back in mid october

Then there is this PK% number that blows my mind.

With that said. I hope to beat your Bruins tonight  :awesome

Well, sheeeeeeeeiiit.

https://www.si.com/nhl/2019/11/26/bill-peters-physical-abuse-allegations-michal-jordan-hurricanes

Quote
Former Hurricanes defenseman Michal Jordán accused Flames coach Bill Peters of physical abuse on Tuesday.

In a series of tweets, Jordán said Peters kicked him and punched an unnamed player in the head during a game.

"After years making it to the NHL had experience with the worst coach ever by far [sic]. Kicking me and punching [another] player to the head during the game...then pretending like nothing happened," Jordán wrote.

Quote
Jordán's accusations come after former NHL player Akim Aliu alleged on Twitter that Peters made racist comments to him when he played for the AHL's Rockford Ice Hogs.

Aliu wrote that Peters "dropped the N bomb several times towards me in the dressing room in my rookie year because he didn’t like my choice of music."

Quote
"He walked in before a morning pre-game skate and said 'Hey Akim, I'm sick of you playing that n----- s---,' " Aliu told TSN. “He said ‘I’m sick of hearing this n-----s f------ other n-----s in the ass stuff.'

"He then walked out like nothing ever happened. You could hear a pin drop in the room, everything went dead silent. I just sat down in my stall, didn't say a word."

---------------

Tasty, I'm watching your Bruins tonight. Hoping for a good rivalry game against the Canadiens.

https://www.yahoo.com/sports/mike-babcock-allegedly-verbally-assaulted-johan-franzen-detroit-red-wings-183958192.html

:'(

Quote
“[Franzen] was hurt at the time of the playoffs, we lost to Nashville...and some of the things he said to him on the bench,” Chelios said. “I don’t know what he said to him behind closed doors — but he was blatantly verbally assaulting him during the game.”

Quote
After Chelios’s anecdote about Franzen spread, Johan himself confirmed the story. The retired Red Wing told SportExpressen, “[Babcock is] a terrible person, the worst person I’ve ever met.”

Quote
Chelios believes petty displays of power are one of Babcock’s signature moves.

“What he did to [Mike] Modano was incredibly disrespectful, what he did recently to [Jason] Spezza in Toronto. Those are the things that are so unnecessary,” Chelios said.

Modano joined Babcock’s Red Wings at the age of 40 in a last ditch effort to earn himself a second ring. But as he approached the remarkable milestone of 1,500 games played in the NHL, the coach healthy-scratched him for a late-season game against the Minnesota Wild, leaving him with 1,499 for his career.

Quote
”He tried to healthy-scratch me for the outdoor game in Wrigley Field against Chicago because it was my hometown,” he said. “Just to show that he’s the boss and to show the general manager that he’s the boss, is such a power thing. His ego is a big part of his personality.”

Yeah I don't really see what Montreal is trying to pull either. I think they recently lost Gallagher for some time. Price isn't playing well. Kovalchuk is not the answer. Ahhh... Maybe they can trade him at the deadline if they can show he's worth a depth player position for some playoff team.

Laviolette fired by the Predators. I know they have been middling this season, but I was not aware that Peter was on the hot seat. But if you are gonna try to spring life into your team by firing a coach this is pretty much the last possible chance before the season has gone on too long to change your fortunes.

I don't follow the NHL, but getting fired midway through your third season after you made it to a Stanley Cup seems pretty harsh. Are they gonna fire every coach that can't win a Cup within two years?
Title: Re: NHL 2019-2020: Skatin' Through Salt
Post by: EchoRin on January 15, 2020, 02:47:08 PM
Seems like a 1/6 of the league has fired their coach this season. Yeah this one was quite surprising as Vegas can easily still make the playoffs. Usually coaches are fired at the mid point of the season at the latest if the team feels they are good enough for a playoff run, but just aren't cutting it up till now. Vegas is currently on a 4 game skid, but yeah this was a pretty quick firing considering how the last two seasons went.

Gallant should be highly coveted by someone in the next season.
Title: Re: NHL 2019-2020: Skatin' Through Salt
Post by: EchoRin on January 20, 2020, 07:24:53 PM
All-Star break is nearly here. Wings have one more game before it. Another loss today came at the hands of the really good looking and old rivals, the Avalanche. A 6-3 loss that concluded with an empty net goal. Pretty par for the course for the 2019-20 Wings.

Still have the most goals against and still have the least goals scored. A quality recipe for being last in the league, which they are. I don't really want to dwell too much on what's bad as this team is fully in their rebuild. The goaltending is very rough and that's not helped by the defense being bad like it was last year. Kronwall is retired, Danny DeKeyser has barely played this year. So we are putting our defensive faith in Mike Green and Trever Daly as the leaders of that crew. As such, you get what you get. But here we can also start with the positive. Filip Hronek has stood out this year. He's a very young player who is looking pretty good and has been a key offensive contributor which no other d-man seems to be at this point. He also gets plenty of ice time. Young defensemen usually take longer to develop as dependable players you can trust in all situations, but Filip is on track. This is his breakout year and when the old guard is not resigned, it's he who will be surely taking a top 3 spot on the Wings D in terms of salary.

Offense - Is there any vet that is bringing much of anything to the table this year? No not really. Helm, Filppula, Abdelkader, Nielsen. There likely isn't any room for them in the league once their contracts are done. Anthony Mantha is having a very nice year despite injuries. It's a big deal as last season Larkin rose to the occasion and Mantha seemed stagnant in his development. This year Larkin is putting up less points per game. He won't come close to his season total last year, but it will be another solid year. Who knows. If the Bertuzzi, Mantha, Larkin line can stay together for the rest of the year he might not even be that far off. Speaking of Bertuzzi. He is positively surprising. Current point leader on the team. That's not a good thing when you assess the team, but it's impressive on Tyler's part. Fabbri is another positive surprise. A young player who had bad luck with his knees. He gets plenty of time here as opposed to St. Louis. What's his long term outlook? Mmm I can't really say. Let's see if he notches 20 goals this year. Lastly, Filip Zadina is now on the regular roster. Anticipated to be a scoring machine, he has a lot to learn and this year is a crash course for him. 24 games played. 6 goals so far. There's about 30 games left. You would like to see him finish with high teens in goals this year. He just has so much to learn. Keep him playing you know.

I heard some hype around the players who played at the under 20 World Championship this December/January, but man I never keep track of prospects until I hear they might be called up or they have huge buzz about them in the league they play in. So I have nothing to add to that.

Tl;dr - Wings are awful and the old vets are gonna have a hard time finding an NHL gig after their contracts are up with us.

edit - forgot abut Frans Nielsen originally when talking about the forward vets. I think he is used on the PK at least.

Tomas Hertl out for the season. Torn ACL and MCL. On the most innocent looking collision too. If the Sharks season wasn't already a dismal failure before, it will be now. Ship Jumbo Joe to a competitor cause he ain't winning a Cup in San Jose.

He gone! Another coach gets dumped (on Valentine's Day of all days). A little late for Minny to try to pull something off this year, but the whole team is just not built to win shit if we are honest. A middle of the road team for a better part of the decade or so? I feel bad for Bruce. Not surprising that he didn't complete this season.

TSN TRADE TRACKER (https://www.tsn.ca/tradecentre/trade-tracker)

Big one yesterday was Kovalchuck to the Caps.

For us Wings fans, we gave both Mike Green and Andreas Athanasiou to the Oilers. Sam Gagner came back our way and several draft picks.

The Oilers also grabbed Tyler Ennis from the Sens. Looks like they are building their offense for a playoff run this year so that they have more than just McDavid and Draisaitl taking care of scoring.

Patrick Marleau is going to get his chance ofr the Cup this year with the Pens who gave the Sharks a 3rd round pick. Kinda surprised they couldn't convicne SJ to take a 4th round pick instead, but that's neither here nor there. I'm curious if Joe Thornton gets traded too. I don't see why not.

And speaking of the Pens they also picked up Conor Sheary and Evan Rodrigues from the Sabres.

Gonna watch the Wings tonight after not seeing any of their games for several weeks (did I miss something? No lol). They currently sit at a "-120" goal differential. It's gonna be fun to watch the Avs who are looking like a legit contender this year. I mean the rivalry died eons ago so I'm not getting all heated up for this game for that reason.

Also gonna be fun switching to the Oilers/Preds game. Watching McDavid and Draisaitl is beautiful.

As for the current standings. The west is a wild one. Who knows how the wild card will shake out. Arizona constantly looking on the outside in. Can't score enough even though they went out to get Kessel and Hall. Hmm... what's the deal there boys? Goaltending has been strong. To miss out on the playoffs with that type of goaltending speaks volumes of your offensive game. Can Minnesota sneak in? They shouldn't. they aren't exactly a good team and it looks like they will finally be rebuilding after this season. Winnipeg. Biggest disappointment this year in the West? I would say so. They had some tough off season loses to their roster, but this is a team that with a few tune ups should be competitive for several seasons. Nashville is sort of in between. Pekka Rinne is no longer good it seems and that's been their biggest issue. Saros has played just as many games as Pekka, but hasn't fared that much better. It's never a good thing to have your goalies both playing below a .910 save %. Perhaps the biggest issue for Nashville is their special teams. They are no good on both sides. I don't know. Of all the bubble teams in the west, I feel like they are the ones who are playing with fire. Though I'd rather see them in the playoffs than Minnesota.

The East is kind of clearer. Florida is bad. They stink even at home. Screw em. Rangers lost Kreider to a broken foot (or something like that). So they are done. Carolina lost their number 1 goalie in Mrazek and I'm not sure how long he will be out. But c'mon. You guys have to knock Columbus out. Columbus really ain't that good even if it's a feel good story of how they overcame losing most of their star players in the offseason. Carolina actually went out to improve their team at the trade deadline. They have a few games in hand over Columbus too. Funny thing. Columbus' last game of the regular season is against Carolina in Raleigh.

It's early on in this Corona-chan timeline. Nobody anticipates any hockey in April.

Some ideas that have popped up in the meantime:

https://www.tsn.ca/nhl-players-spitballing-late-july-return-august-postseason-1.1458274?fbclid=IwAR3UDrDr10bNX-EfwbyUW5TSTDtQGUWesygULYI12FpsmnN8Cc3xRFnVxTc

This one seems pretty wild. Especially with how they would push the conclusion of the season to nearly the end of summer. Considering how you still have a 20-21 season to play after all.

NHL extending isolation period for players and staff

Quote
Deputy commissioner Bill Daly on Tuesday confirmed the NHL has asked that players and staff extend their self-quarantine 10 days beyond the original March 27 timeline to April 6 — further pushing back the earliest team facilities can reopen.
Quote
Commissioner Gary Bettman said recently the decision to resume play would be made in accordance with health officials. The league is working on various scenarios about what a potential return to play could look like.

Bettman remains optimistic about resuming this season and awarding the Stanley Cup. That could mean playing games deep into the summer or early fall.

The NHL plans to stage a full 2020-21 season, even if it means starting as late as November.

Nothing surprising. Heck here in Chicago I think we're under quarantine until April 7th anyway (for now).

Nothing much to say about hockey at the moment. The video in the link is relevant after Trump spoke to multiple league commissioners today. I don't know if Lebrun meant he doesn't expect hockey in 2020 or if he meant he doesn't expect this 2019-20 season to have an ending. Because I think this season is done for, but I'm not losing hope for the 2020-21 campaign to start in October just yet.

2020 Hall of Fame Class

Jarome Iginla
Marian Hossa
Doug Wilson
Kevin Lowe
Kim St. Pierre (Canadian female goaltender)
Ken Holland (GM of the Oilers and had much success in Detroit, though left the team on a lesser note after fumbling the team's rebuild the first time around.)

I just assumed everyone on those Oilers' teams was in the HoF.

It's always been the Hall of Very Good, so no shock Iginla and Hossa made it.
Title: Re: NHL 2019-2020: Skatin' Through Salt
Post by: EchoRin on June 24, 2020, 06:00:35 PM
I think Iginla and Hossa are legit. Hossa probably the best Slovakian player in the last 30 years. You could argue he shouldn't be first ballot perhaps. But when I look at that I would say he's about as first ballot worthy as Teemu Selanne or Mats Sundin.

I really can't speak on Lowe and Wilson. I just don't remember them as players (Lowe I should remember, but *Reggie shrug*).

Though I can't help but think that Alfredsson should have made it in. Just as worthy as Iginla. Just as important as Mats or Jarome were to their respective long time franchises. Mogilny should find his way in one day. I think he's mainly hurt by time passing by and not enough montages to remind people that he was damn special.

Yeah, they're in the same tier as Sundin and Selanne (though I think Selanne's had a better peak). Hossa was a stud defensively (Alfredsson wasn't bad himself).

Iginla and Hossa are legit. I just meant by the standards set by the HoF, they were easy picks.

Some more fun to get us hyped up for the preliminary playoff round. The ever so fun penalty shot. The penatly shot master kicks off the video. You know who. And I gotta say of all the goals scored, Roman Turek really gave Joe Sakic way to much space on the right. Bad body position from the start.

What if early aughts Islanders but feeling sick ?
It's OK I guess. The logo and anchor are not too busy or bland though feels a bit dated. Using a singular name is fresh enough in American sports but in the NHL it's hard to top the Avalanche which is so on point. Kraken sounds a bit silly and very "If you grew while Pirates of the Caribbean ruled the box office !" while simultaneously being pompous for going to a mythological name instead of the "Squids".

I do think it's pretty cool that the home jersey (non-white) doesn't have any white in it. It does give me some Winnipeg Jets vibes with the colors. I mean maybe it isn't as close if I saw the jerseys side by side, but still. I like the striping on the arms and how it will look on the socks.

John Chayka leaves the Coyotes. New GM is Steve Sullivan who was the assistant GM. Seems like there was a rift and Chayka decided to step down immediately. Can't say it makes any impact for this season anyway. You are better off having an exiting GM leave before the draft.
Wonder what will be Chayka's next step.  :thinking

Blackhawks/Oilers series has been really fun. I haven't watched several of the series (Pens/Canadiens, Islanders/Panthers) and not talking about the round robins. But aside from the Canes/Rangers games, the aforementioned series has been my favorite so  far.

We'll guide you. This whole preliminary playoffs thing is unprecedented. Soon we'll have the proper playoffs with 8 teams in each conference.

For now just enjoy the chaos. I'd say today watch the Penguins/Canadiens game or the Blackhawks/Oilers game. For the sake of star power.
Title: Re: NHL 2019-2020: Skatin' Through Salt

8 teams? Isn't that half the league? How are the play offs seen as legitimate if half the league makes it?

Sorry, coming from a baseball/soccer perspective so it's very different.
Title: Re: NHL 2019-2020: Skatin' Through Salt
Post by: EchoRin on August 07, 2020, 08:33:35 AM
Yeah it's been 8 and 8 for like uhhhhhh... My entire life haha. And yep that's about half of the league.

I guess it doesn't feel wrong because the teams are pretty close to each other in terms of quality. Lots of parity. It's not like in the NFL where it would be God awful if half of the conference made it to the playoffs.
Essentially it's like basketball, but in the NHL there always seems to be an upset or two in the first round as opposed to the NBA where the 1 and 2 seed is very likely to destroy the 8 and 7 seed.

Draft lottery phase 2 for the overall number 1 pick tonight. 6PM eastern time.

Everybody is on the edge of their seat and ready to rage if it goes to Edmonton/Pittsburgh/Toronto except for their respective fans haha. I guess if I had to pick who I want to see get the number 1 draft pick it would be Florida. The team has been crap or very short of being a contender forever.

Meanwhile, here is your NHL playoff bracket for 2020:

Cindi as far as my memory goes, the onyl two series which are a repeat from last year are in the Eastern conference. Tampa/Columbus and Boston/Carolina.

Columbus swept the top Eastern seed last year in a massive upset. I'm sure Tampa won't allow that to happen again. That would be the end of coach Cooper I would have to assume if they don't win the series this time.
Boston took care of Carolina rather easily too. Maybe a sweep as well? But this Canes team is hot hot hot and Boston didn't play well during the round robin, so maybe Carolina will catch the Bruins slumping.

I'm most looking forward to the Canes/Bruins series in round 1 personally.

------
Some fun guesses:

Series most likely to be a sweep - Colorado sweeping Arizona
Series most likely to go to 7 games - Washington/NY Islanders (cause it seems like Washington always plays a game 7 at some point)
Best goaltending duel - Philadelphia/Montreal
Series with most goal on average per game - Chicago/Vegas (I don't know why. Just a hunch)
Series to have the most penalty minutes on average per game - Dallas/Calgary (I think I view Calgary as bad boys so, eh)

Yeah Boston swept Carolina last year. Which was funny because Canes swept the Isles after Isles had swept the Pens. St. Louis should have swept Boston to make it really ridiculous.

Tuukka Rask, goalie of the Boston Bruins has decided to opt out of the playoffs. That would make him the first to leave the bubble while his team was still in it I believe (Canadiens coach is currently out of the bubble, but not voluntarily. He has a medical issue and thus will miss the first round. Not Covid related).

Rask made a comment a few days ago that seemed to rub some people the wrong way. But I wouldn't necessarily read too much into it. He's got a family and maybe the bubble just wasn't working out for him or perhaps someone else in the family. So Rask is out for the remainder of the playoffs. Jaroslav Halak will take over. He may be the number 2, but he ain't your typical one step lower backup. Guy has had starting goalie experience with several franchises and has had big playoff moments too.

So it's a strange development, but one that makes sense assuming Tuukka is leaving due to family reasons and not something else that the franchise is keeping hush hush. I don't have any reason to believe the story is covering up for something else unless that somehow turns out to be the case.

Watched the third period of the Bruins/Canes yesterday. Boy that must have brought up lots of PTSD for various people. Toronto fans, James Reimer. It was impressive. I haven't seen such a dominant period all playoffs. Going to be hard to recover from that game for Carolina. The difference between 2-2 and 3-1 series is massive. Losing a game in that fashion to make it 3-1 (in Bruins favor). I love watching how momentum shifts in a series.

Today might feature the first games with eliminations. Islanders lead the Caps 3-0, Golden Knights lead Chicago 3-1. I saw the last Isles game and they were all over Washington. Always forechecking, always on top of them. Not letting the Caps skate and move the puck gracefully. I'm happy for Trotz kinda showing "hey, you should have paid me" to the Caps management. And the Islanders to once again win a series post Tavares while the Maple Leafs keep going "wha happened? We got all these skilled players. Whadaya mean we have to play defense?"

Oh no. Dale Hawerchuck passed away. I knew he was battling cancer. Just didn't think he was struggling that bad. Mainly known for his tenure in Winnipeg and Buffalo.

Blackhawks are out. Golden Knights move one. An expected result.

Today is a fun one with 4 of the 5 games being potential series clinchers. Only the Canucks/Blues series is stuck at 2-2. So a pivotal game 5 there to conclude today's schedule.

No games tonight. Those games are currently postponed as a show of solidarity and protest with BLM and the recent shooting of a black man in Wisconsin (I'm sure all of us know about that. This is a pretty North America centric message board.

The NHL isn't the only league to have postponed games, though it seems like they needed some pushing to acknowledge these racial/human issues from the Hockey Diversity Alliance. It's going to be baby steps with the NHL of course. The racial background being mostly white. If currently the league needs that extra push from the HDA then that's the way it's gonna have to be. This is somewhat newer territory for the league and it will get things wrong now and then, but hopefully with the HDA the NHL will improve and take strides on racial issues rather than just those baby steps.

-----

As for yesterday, that was some wild playoff hockey. The Avs nearly digging themselves a 0-3 hole but coming through in the end. Philly nearly collapsing (lucky OT goal, but hey). Felt bad for the Bruins rookie goaltender who had to step in. The defensive game was poor for Boston yesterday and it didn't really matter who was in net. But man, the Lightning even without Stamkos look so complete. They remind me of the 2001 Avalanche who were able to win it all even without Forsberg throughout the entire playoffs. This Lightning team is really complete. Though I wouldn't count Boston out. That performance yesterday made them look much worse than what they are.

Edit: NO HOCKEY TODAY OR TOMORROW

Poor Tasty. The Bruins have been eliminated. The Lightning able to win out in double overtime while missing Kucherov (and still missing Stamkos). Don't see anyone stopping the Lightning in the East to be honest. I don't know what Kucherov's status is, but unless he is feeling some kind of concussion symptoms I imagine he will be available next series (he took a high stick. Left the game, came back and then left again).

Meh. So what. Those ticket holders can suck a big one. I remember Dallas was one of the first teams to stand up for whatever the bathroom issue was some 3 years ago (I don't even remember what it was. I think a trans person going into the bathroom fitting of their gender? Something like that). I guess that didn't push people over the top, but a racial issue did. Brock Nelson did some great things in today's game. The set up for the 3rd goal and then scoring the game winner. Awesome to see that after he had a painful game 2, literally.

Still, I don't see an upset here. Even without Point (Tampa) potentially missing the rest of the series which I'm not sure is the case. I'd start to worry if they lost a top 3 defenseman. Until then though I think they can weather the injury storm. Wish I knew what the deal was with Stamkos. Sucks not seeing him play playoff hockey and man would that really put the Islanders on their heels having to deal with both Kucherov and Stamkos.

There we go.

Lightning/Stars final. First game should be Saturday (I just checked before this post so that's the latest update as far as I know).

Looking forward to this. With all due respect to NYI, I would much rather see two high power offences duke it out. Islanders have some legit offensive stars, but on a whole their game is much more safe with a counterattack approach than Tampa and Dallas. If Stamkos returns for the Lightning that would be cool too. Maybe just wishful thinking at this point.

Regardless, let the Bubble Cup Finals begin!

I wouldn't mind that so I can watch Monday Night Football between the Chiefs and Ravens  :P instead of game 6. Cause you know that hockey takes priority for me, but man would I hate to miss out on that football game.

edit: Stamkos OUT for game 4

Well, certainly some controversy as to how this one ended. You expect Dallas will really have a chip on their shoulder tomorrow.

Game 6 on Monday.

Out of respect to Tasty, the thread starter, I will wait on him to create the next season thread. In the meantime I think we will continue to use this thread for all the offseason happenings.

There's been some trades here and there. Players learning they won't be coming back to their last team. Perhaps the biggest one is Henrik Lundqvist.

https://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/30004973/new-york-rangers-buy-final-year-goalie-henrik-lundqvist-contract-source-says

The Rangers bought out his final year. Moving on with their two under-25 goaltenders. Henrik is 38 and I'm not sure what his next step will be. I think his days as a starter in the NHL are done and if he is going to continue in the NHL it will be as a backup. Similar to say Ryan Miller who also won a Vezina and never a Stanley Cup. I don't know if that's something King Henrik would be interested in. If this is the end of the road for him it was a remarkable career. Even without that Cup he will likely find his way into the Hockey Hall of Fame. But hey, that's getting ahead of ourselves. Perhaps some new colors are waiting for Henrik in 2021.

Likely not too interesting to anyone except for me. Abdelkader became completely unnoticeable this season. So the buyout isn't shocking. I just figured it wasn't necessary with the Wings being far from copetitive this coming year. But hey I guess you set the tone and drop the hanger ons to make space for some of the prospects to get NHL experience. Let them make mistakes and learn with the big boys. Not like they will hinder the team more than Abby did last year.

NHL draft is over. Couldn't tell you anything about any player anyway. A few notable things in the first round were that Lafreniere went first overall (Rangers), which was expected. 2nd overall was Quintin Byfield (LA Kings) is the highest drafted black player. So that's an interesting bit. One of the guys that fell way down according to experts due to head injury troubles was Lapierre, selected 22nd by the Capitals.

There was some neat little cameos with who presented the picks. Ottawa for example had Alex Trebek of Jeopardy fame do the selection. But the most heart warming one to me was the last pick of the first round by the Sharks. They selected a player whose mom is deaf, so they spelled out his first name in sign language. Really endearing gesture.

--------

Other things that have happened recently:

Max Domi was traded to Columbus. They extended him for 2 years.

Crawford will not be returning to the Blackhawks and Taylor Hall will not be returning to the Coyotes. Schneider gonna be bought out by New Jersey.

Matt Murray was traded to the Sens. Gonna see if his flame burned out or he can resurrect his very young career with a team that sees him as a potential starter for years to come.

So of course the Penguins decided on keeping Tristan Jarry. 3 year deal.

That's kind of it.

Taylor Hall signed with the Sabres.

For 1 year at 8 mil. It's a strange one. For a hired gun kind of contract you wonder why not go to a Cup contender rather than a team that could be in the playoff bubble, but hasn't proven that they can be trusted to break through anyway. The money is nice. Maybe it's something where if the following season goes well he and the Sabres would look to make a long term pact? Quite an interesting signing that has me a little confused.

Alex Pietrangelo signs with Vegas for 7 years. 8.8 mil. per year. Not sure if that's spread out differently, but yeah. Killer deal for Alex. Vegas continues to be Cup contender for years to come.

Gonna sound like the saltiest bitch on Earth here, but I really believe we were on track to win this year before NHL pressed pause on the season. If COVID was a year later, the B's would have that cup right now.

Oh well. GGs.

Thanks for keeping the thread alive Echo. :)

Come get your reverse retro jerseys for this upcoming season.

https://twitter.com/PuckReportNHL/status/1328357993809911809

Really dig the Caps, Avs (Nordiques, Canes (Whalers), Kings threads. Wild just opting for the North Stars colors works I think. Sabres should have use the goat head, cmon! Red Wings way too minimal. Islanders were probably like "Do NOT use the fisherman logo" hahaha. Felt the Penguins could have have gone with the later 90s Penguin logo.

The first three are so bad though  :lol Ducks, Yotes, Flames. Dallas I think would have stood out more if they used the color version of that design.

edit: Oh and Vancouver, why not use the disco skate logo? The Orca is very "now" and not "retro" even though I know it goes back to the late 90s originally.

B's one isn't bad, I'm a big fan of the yellow in general (all the Bruins hats I buy are yellow with the emblem.) And the classic B-spoke is a nice change-up now and then.

Yellow is my fave color. <3

Divisions are set for this season.

https://www.nhl.com/news/nhl-teams-in-new-divisions-for-2020-21-season/c-319844882

Quote
Each team will play a 56-game schedule and face teams only in its division during the regular season, which will begin Jan. 13, 2021, after the NHL and NHL Players' Association announced approval of the plan Sunday.

The top four teams in each division will qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs, when each round will be best-of-7.

The Boston Bruins, Buffalo Sabres, New Jersey Devils, New York Islanders, New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers, Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals will play in the East Division.

The Carolina Hurricanes, Chicago Blackhawks, Columbus Blue Jackets, Dallas Stars, Detroit Red Wings, Florida Panthers, Nashville Predators and Tampa Bay Lightning will compete in the Central Division.

The Anaheim Ducks, Arizona Coyotes, Colorado Avalanche, Los Angeles Kings, Minnesota Wild, San Jose Sharks, St. Louis Blues and Vegas Golden Knights will be in the West Division.

The Canadiens, Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers, Ottawa Senators, Toronto Maple Leafs, Vancouver Canucks and Winnipeg Jets will play in the North Division.

To add a little something. Red Wings? They will miss the playoffs. Nice to have the Blackhawks in our division. Also cool that the Stanley Cup final teams, Stars and Lightning will be in the same division too. Not too eager about playing every team in the division 8 times. Remember when the NHL did that in the post lockout season? To instill rivalries was the reason. Really it just got to be too much and that was when you ha 5 teams in a division. Circumstances here are understandable though.

Completely unrelated, but it's going to make some of the awards hard to vote for if you aren't going to see all the teams play. Like the Vezina is voted by the GMs. And even if you go by stats it's possible that some division might just be weaker offensively and... you get it. An odd season makes for odd scenarios.

But hockey is coming so that's neat.

Weird 😬

Henrik Lundqvist will need open heart surgery  :-\

Obviously not joining the Caps after all and will miss the entire season, and well I guess there's really no coming back from this at his age. Hopefully the surgery will go well and he is able to recuperate.
