THE BORE

I never watched an anime in my life, not even Dragonball or other mainstream anime.
I kinda got into the Persona series but only because of Giant Bomb and played some Final Fantasy games because they were part of the vidya zeitgeist.
Let me describe my descent into weebness:
I bought Persona 4 Golden on steam because I was bored and it‘s cheap. I thought: I never played Persona 3 for more than like 10 hours, maybe I should play that first.
Played the Portable version, but switched to FES (with the party control mod) instead.
The game is awesome and I thought: You know maybe I just like JRPGs in general?
I ordered the Tales of Whatever collection on PS4, Star Ocean and the Disgaea collection on PS3.
What if my wife finds out? Or my colleagues? :existential
Which games can the unapologetic weebs recommend? :uguu :rash
-
have you tried mario, or perhaps sonic
-
Nintendo.
-
seriously tho go buy some dragon quest
-
sonic
:jeanluc
I still have some dignity.
-
btw I meant games on current or last gen systems.
I knkw about the Chrono Triggers, Suikodens and other games of that era.
I never played them, but I think I will soon :doge
-
seriously tho go buy some dragon quest
I already own DQ XI, same for the Ni No Kuni games. Are they worth the huge time commitment?
I also like some challenge in the battle system, the Persona games are a tad easy even on hard.
-
dqxi is worth it, and it has a lot of difficulty modifiers you can choose to make the game extremely hard. never played ni no.

You're only a weeb if you watch the wrong anime.
-
Just a few RPG's/ARPG's that come to mind other than the well known Nintendo games that I assume you've already played or know about.
NieR Automata
Secret of Mana
Illusion of Time
Terrangima
Chrono Trigger
Astral Chain
Lost Odyssey
Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition
Fire Emblem: Awakening
Fire Emblem: Three Houses
Valkyria Chronicles
Lufia 2
Earthbound
Some more weeb, some less weeb
If you haven't played the Nintendo games, there's a bunch more to go and dive into.
-
I think I should have known that I was a weeb all along for being obsessed with Metal Gear Solid 1-3. :existential
-
Yakuza 0.
The ultimate weeb game you don't need to be ashamed for :pimp
Zero Escape: Nonary Game Collection. Second game in particular has the best narrative of the generation, but you might not want to be seen with some of the character designs unfortunately.
-
Are the early X360 JRPGS like Eternal Sonata, Lost Odyssey, Enchanted Arms and Blue Dragon any good?
They are pretty cheap used and I like physical games. :doge
-
^Xbox is for Ninja Gaiden 1 and 2.
-
Ninja Gaiden is not a weeb game, it‘s cool action guy stuff. :bolo
-
Lost Odyssey used to be seen as one of the best rpgs of the seventh console generation.
-
Okami is like 15€ physical on current gen.
-

Yes to the bold. Never played the other two, but I think they were considered average.
-
Lost Odyssey is fantastic. I highly recommend it.
Eternal Sonata is a good enough Tales clone. I liked the musicians theme they had going, still it was one of those early generation "We don't have the real thing, so this will suffice" games that I was used to as a GameCube-only owner.
LO is worth it just for the soundtrack alone
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SaCkn9l3Rg4
-
Eternal Sonata is awful but if you want an effective cure for the weebiness, force yourself to play through it.
Also, I'd recommend the Ys series for fun, fast action rpgs. I'd also recommend the Trails series but they're a serious time commitment and the pacing can be dreadfully slow at points.
-
“I kinda got into the Persona ser-“
Lol weeb
-
“I kinda got into the Persona ser-“
Lol weeb
Persona 3 FES with the mod is so good :lawd
Haven’t decided on a waifu yet though :expert
-
No Persona 5?
Lost Odyssey used to be seen as one of the best rpgs of the seventh console generation.
It really is. When the majority of japanese dev struggled and Squenix shit the bad with FF13, the gooch gave us a proper FF experience.
-
I played through the first three(?) palaces of P5 before I stopped. Might as well start over when I get to Royal :trumps
-
So you think you like Atlus, JRPG and demon summoning?
And you havent instantly ordered SMT III Nocturne?
Cmon bruh
-
Persona 3/4 are crack. 5's a good game too.
Now down to the brass tacks:
Persona 3- Mitsuru or Aegis
Persona 4-Rise
Persona 5-Kawakami (the teacher)
Mitsuru is that kind of girl who has her shit together and also prevents you from becoming a lazy slob and dropping out of college :lawd

I saw the Atelier Trilogy for PS3 on ebay for a pretty good price, but I think my weebness isn‘t quite there yet :doge
-
I'm a weeb, but I don't care for the animu waifu shit that seems to be most of anime today. Then again, I'm an anime fan who got into it for cool designs and sci-fi shit like Akira and Ghost in the Shell.
So with that said I guess I'd recommend stuff like
Resonance of Fate-Because the gun crafting and battle system are plenty of fun.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WOQ3PlNgd5c
Gravity Rush 2-Kat may be appeal to the waifu crowd, but the game is actually charming and relaxing on a non-creep level.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nkdgCs16WB0
Valkryia Chronicles 1 and 4-Both are a really fun and rewarding strategy games. Good mechanics that do allow for cool ways to cheese the game. Missions that change up enough that it's not boring. 4 is way more anime and a bit more low budget then 1(which is anime WW2), but still a really good game.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_unym8oSow
Asura's Wrath-Doesn't get a lot of praise, but it actually is good. The gameplay is meh, but the story is good. For sure made for an older audience anime story wise. Simple, but with some really cool moments and twists. The art, animation, music, and so on are top notch.

Eternal Sonata is an awful game.
Lost Odyssey is ok. You'll think it's "more mature" and refined thanks to the art and subject matter, but that falls apart as the game goes along. I don't even remember much about the story other then it simply just being there. Still, the battle system is fun and the character progression system is interesting. As the immortals are blank slates you have some control over and the mortal characters develop like regular jrpg characters. But the you need the mortal skills so you can teach them to the immortals. So progression is cool.
Blue Dragon, well I never really got far into it because the "made for kids" feeling is bad. Complete with an annoying mascot character. You know as a kid, I did'nt want to watch or play things that felt made specifically for kids by Adults who don't know what kids like. Well this game has that feeling and as a result there's really nothing "cool" going on here. Basic battles, basic looking world. Nothing that dares to really excite you. It's pretty safe.
Enchanted Arms is pretty goofy so it may be worth the $5 just to see how batshit stupid it is.
-
Blue Dragon is awesome and I recommend it highly.
-
blue dragon is great and better than lost odyssey
if you like blue dragon play dragon quest
-
Weeb games are good. You miss way too much cool shit in gaming if you totally avoid weebness.
Asura's Wrath is a really good recommendation for 110% weeb style awesomeness.
blue dragon is great and better than lost odyssey
if you like blue dragon play dragon quest
These are both good & true statements.

I only see one mention of Trails of Cold Steel, so you should probably go play Trails of Cold Steel
Here's a good scene from the first game. Only one relevant spoiler involved, but nothing huge

Wow how dare you whatever Vesperia. :maf

Play tales of vesperia first. it's the best

I liked it on the three-sixty, but when I went to replay it on the Switch, it didn't really do it for me anymore. Bersaria is about a strong, independent women held down by the patriarchy; a powerful message.

If you're gonna play Trails, might as well play Sky first. It's better, shorter, and ties into Cold Steel later on.
-
I will post my weeb haul tomorrow. It’s kinda embarrassing how much stuff I bought :doge
But also pretty awesome :uguu
-
post your weeb
-
People recomedning Trails of Cold steel? Eww.
This is like when a new person watched Cowboy Bebop and is asking for other good stuff and people recommend shit like Madoka, One Piece, or other anime shit further down the drain.
Start off with "normal" stuff, before you get into the deep end.
That said, I already find Trails pretty boring with it's anime high school and slow Falcom story telling.
-
Rah, we've had our differences but I also got into anime via cool dark sci-fi shit like GITS and now find most anime to be repugnant as it's the complete opposite of that.
-
Who recommends anime? Haha
Anime is infinite more embarassing and socially unacceptable than playing weeb videogames
-
If you're gonna play Trails, might as well play Sky first. It's better, shorter, and ties into Cold Steel later on.
100% unnecessary, nobody gives a shit about the world, they just want those highs that weeb videogames give - lessons about friendship, love, and killer moves being screamed out
-
Eh, I’m pretty sure people still seek out or give recommendations. Lots of crap to sort through and not everyone is ingrained. I mean recently my niece recommended Darling in the Franx. MyAnine list exists and discords and Reddit’s are full of that.
Ad far as more acceptable. I guess? I don’t know. I don’t care.
But yes I was speaking from my anime days where a new person or someone less hardcore about this stuff would say “what’s out there like Cowboy Bebop” and the less self aware fans would recommend things far removed or way less accessible.
-
Start off with "normal" stuff, before you get into the deep end.
Exactly. Start off with some Crying Freeman, then move on to Eiken.
-
I’d actually argue that ideas of nerd stuff being embarrassing or socially acceptable are pretty out of date. Dragon ball, My Hero, Attack on Titan, are pretty huge here. Anime has just kind of settled into its own sub culture. I don’t think people care anymore about nerd stuff. Nobody cares anymore. It’s on Netflix and sold at your local Walmart.

FACT CHECK:
Disgaea Triple Play Collection will be here tomorrow :doge
Most of those games were dirt cheap, didn‘ spend much more than 200 bucks, but still :doge
-
Arland Trilogy :rejoice
-
are ya weebin', son?
-
Just remember those Yakuza 3-5 titles are far older than 0.
Zero is the goat and 3-5 aged a bit. Kiwami 1-2 got a nice makeover.
Since you've been enjoying Atlus titles, I can recommed Catherine. There's the standard version, but you can get Full Body for a decent price now.
It's a puzzle title with the big theme being relationships, fear of commitment and stuff like that.
You got some trash in between. The biggest offender is prolly Star Ocean : The Last Hope.
Are you sure you really wanna do that?

It was literally a buck, I will never play 90% of these games anyway. :rejoice

Already bought the 360 version of Catherine a month or so ago, since it was significantly cheaper and not that different from the rerelease AFAIK
-
(https://i.ibb.co/nRZtyjX/image.jpg)
Mugen Souls :neogaf
It was 89 cents, I also bought Lair and Duke Nukem Forever for that. I would buy literal trash for 89 cents.
I have a hoarding problem :fbm

Man where are you getting these deals? Older games that cheap in Euro?

Man where are you getting these deals? Older games that cheap in Euro?
There is a reseller that is just cheap in general. And their database is completely fucked. :lol
For example they list FF XIII for 5 bucks or so, but if you enter the name of the game in their search it is there again in the wrong category or not listed properly at all for a buck. I think imports and games from other Euro regions mess with their database :lol
That way I also got Gears of War Ultimate for 99 cents or Hitman 2 for 5 bucks. :rejoice

Yeah, they list Metro Redux for Xbone for 19 bucks. But the Austrian version is 5 bucks and can only be found through a search query. and if you bought Metro 2033 and Last Light seperately, it‘s 23 Euro-dollars. :lol
-
star ocean games besides the first and second are games you play for the gameplay only.
-
that pic makes me kind of sad thinking of money I have wasted over the years. I have no less than 10 of those in my backlog that I would actually like to get around to playing more of (or at all) some day. there are more in there I bought but will likely never finish, but a majority of those can be attributed to a PS3 bricking when I was a ways into multiple RPGs like a fool. :maf
I wonder what the total of all that on timetobeat.com would be, has to be something obscene. :lol

This is an almost reasonable assumption, but unfounded. Plenty of dumbasses out there obsessed with Kojima's ham-handed, derivative, self-indulgent storytelling. But just because he's Japanese doesn't make you a weeaboo.
Go read a couple Tim Rogers "games journalism" articles, and see if you enjoy those. If so, you may just be fascinated with narcissists.

This song is so overused in media I now fully hate it.
