Dang. I gotta see the highlights.
I've watched most of the Wings games so far. Now they have had players out due to Covid protocol (whatever that means), but they sit where you figured they would even this early on. At the bottom ::)

The Wings, they can't score. This team is going to end up with the least goals in the league if things continue the way they are. And that seems almost like a certainty. It's rough and I know it's all part of the rebuild to expect massive struggles at both ends of the ice.
To put it in perspective. If the Red Wings score 3 or more goals, you can get free small curly fries at Arby's in the Detroit area. 3 goals. This ain't no dead puck era my friends. This team simply cannot find the back of the net on a regular basis.

Tasty. I'm really looking forward to the outdoor game at Lake Tahoe this Sunday. That's so cool. I was able to visit the area as preteen I think and it was in the summer. I hope the scenery pops.

The NHL was right in trying to play these games originally in the early afternoon. It made for the best viewing experience both in terms of the scenery and the ice. The shadows in yesterday's game during the daytime were a bit intrusive. Nighttime outdoor hockey was fine, but lacked the scenery.
Of course, the playing surface comes first and I fully understand why the games had to adjust their starting times. Awesome location, too bad the sun was beaming the whole time. Apparently it wouldn't have been too bad had there been some cloudy days here and there. I was paying too much attention to the ins and outs, but the NBC TV people mentioned that the weather was too nice for too many days leading up to the weekend.
Putting that aside. Pasta! Doing the country proud. For sure the best Czech player in the league so far this decade.

Yeah this game was fakkin bootyful bro.

Possibly huge news for the NHL in the US
https://sports.yahoo.com/report-nhl-signs-seven-year-broadcast-deal-with-espn-222207219.html
Plus, Emily Kaplan does a great job writing about the NHL for ESPN. They don't even deserve her with the trash (albeit, obviously financially successful trash) they put out there half of the time.

Does this mean I can finally ignore the stupid bullshit NESN has been pulling with YouTube TV and just get YouTube TV with ESPN?

Haven't really been adding much of the bigger news (coaching changes if anything), but this one is pretty huge as I just started listening to the podcast Whistleblower that deals with the ref game fixing scandals of the NBA from the 2000s.
Tim Peel got caught manipulating the game too blatantly and has now reffed his last game

Bally Sports, I hate you.
Worst TV sports broadcasting company in the US bar none.
They put the overlay on the bottom of the screen. Tasty, I know that might seem normal to you (I've watched NESN a few times this year). but no other sane company puts the overlay on the bottom of their screens for ice hockey. Absolutely unacceptable.
-
At least you can watch it on your preferred provider. I've had to deal with DirecTV in lieu of YouTube TV not having a NESN contract. :maf
Also I guess I got used to the logo lol don't even know specifically what you're talking about, other than it being standard in all US broadcasts I think.

Apparently Bally Sports is severely limited on where they appear too. I watch through more sinister means.
But to understand what is causing all hockey fans stuck with Bally to lose their shit with all sports but especially hockey.

They chop off plenty of the ice surface instead of putting their overlay at the top where it doesn't interfere
Y'know, like any sane hockey production:

The big get of the trade deadline? Taylor Hall goes to Tasty's Bruins.
ALL IN ON THE BOSTON TRAIN CHOO CHOO!!!
https://www.tsn.ca/buffalo-sabres-send-taylor-hall-curtis-lazar-to-boston-bruins-for-anders-bjork-second-rounder-1.1621992
One hopes that his struggles in Buffalo were merely that of a team with no chemistry and slumps. The kind of classic "when things go bad they go really bad" scenarios. Taylor should be motivated by several factors. Playing damn well so he can turn it into a hefty contract next year (likely for multiple years after seeing how bad things can go when signing a 1 year. Gotta cover your ass). And 2, he's on a real deal playoff team for the first time in his career. No disrespect to the other times he's been in the playoffs, but none of those teams were as strong as the Bruins.
His addition is a big boost that can help beyond the perfection line. It's most likely that you will see a two and two split. 2 guys plus someone from the perfection line and 1 perfection line guy + Hall + someone else.
Exciting.

We got our asses blown out last night, gonna need all the help we can get.

NHL Network's Kevin Weekes reports the Washington Capitals are set to acquire Anthony Mantha from the Detroit Red Wings for a package including Jakub Vrana, Richard Panik and more.

Don't look now, but the Dallas Stars are heating up. I should know. They beat up on my Wings two games in a row. Kinda ugly games to be frank and today it was really bad defensive breakdowns on the Wings end. Still, Dallas had a decent Covid shutdown earlier in the season and it looked like they either might not recover from it in terms of getting back on track with momentum as well as with their play. I wrote them off and was ready to crown the Blackhawks as the surprise of the year.
Well they are a +17 in goal differential. Currently have 3 more points than the Blackhawks and are one point behind the 4th seed Predators. They also have 2 games in hand over the Preds. This race for 4th is getting very interesting in the Central Division. Really impressed how the Stars have turned their season around what with their compact schedule.
Also, I hope the Lightning and Panthers stay in the 3rd and second positions. I want to finally see the Florida duel in the playoffs.

Update on the National TV rights going forward starting next season:
https://www.axios.com/hockey-nhl-broadcast-espn-turner-sports-a6bbf70f-e5c8-441c-bb51-983b6819c170.html
NBC Sports, which has been the NHL's sole national rights holder for the entirety of the Ovechkin/Crosby Era (2004–present), is getting out of the hockey business.
Driving the news: Starting next season, all nationally-televised NHL games will be broadcast by ESPN and Turner Sports.
ESPN will pay $2.8 billion over seven years for the league's "A" package, which includes four Stanley Cup Finals. And yes, the theme song is coming back.
Turner will pay $1.57 billion over seven years for the "B" package. Games will be televised on TNT and TBS, and HBO Max will reportedly be included in some capacity.
-
I'm sorry, I fucking love HBO Max.
Please tell me I can get mah B's there. :heartbeat
-
I want that high quality HBO Winter Classic docu-series again. The motivation would be there as the Winter Classic games will be on the Turner channels.
-
You guys see this shit? The DoPS wouldn't ban Wilson after his cheap shot and the Rangers came out to PLAY
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8AJXS0wF9MM

I did see that sheeeeeiiiit. Rangers dropped their coach, president and GM. Strange in a lot of ways. That team was a lot better this year than the casual observer might have thought. I mean if they were in a different division they would slide into the playoffs. But, we'll see how things go forward. Chris Drury is the new GM I think. I sort of left all the Rangers news behind me because....
NHL PLAYOFFS START SATURDAY BABYYYYYYY!
Schedule and bracket:
https://www.nhl.com/stanley-cup-playoffs
I have Tasty's Bruins winning it all this year, even though that East division is such a big question mark to me. Super excited for that Bruins/Caps series though. Which is the first and only playoff game this Saturday. Other series I'm most intrigued by in round 1 is Florida/Tampa. Mainly for the regional bragging rights.
For fun. My predictions for Rd.1:
North division
Leafs over Canadiens in 5
Oilers over Jets in 6
---
East division
Penguins over Islanders in 6
Bruins over Caps in 7
---
West division
Avalanche over Blues in 5
Golden Knights over Wild in 4
---
Central division
Hurricanes over Predators in 5
Lightning over Panthers in 6
-
Bruins a win away from clinching, Avs same thing, Jets giving the Oilers a scare (Oilers can't score).
Big news of the day though, Nazem Kadri, 8 game suspension.
https://sports.yahoo.com/news/nazem-kadri-suspended-8-games-for-head-shot-on-justin-faulk-031417320.html
For the casual fan you might think you've seen worse hits. Perhaps, but it's headshot and Kadri somehow has managed to get suspended twice in other first rounds. Don't know what's up with the dude in that regard. He's not one of those "plays on the edge" kind of players. He's not even a power forward you look to as a physical presence.
It won't affect the team at all against the Blues. The team will miss his skill in the following round though.
-
https://twitter.com/posterinexile/status/1395903447254409223
-
Avs complete the sweep. Bruins move on in 5 (congrats Tasty). I wonder if that's the end of Chara's NHL career. I suppose there are several interesting questions about the Capitals roster going into next year. Ovie needs a new contract for starters.
Meanwhile, Edmonton loses in overtime after leading 4-1 in the 3rd period. What can you even say. They looked bad once the Jets got rolling. Like they were scared and just trying to survive. Well now you are a game away from being swept. That kinda bums me out cause I did want to see the Connor McDavid show. That won't happen now unless we witness a miracle. But like who loses 4 straight with a goalie that's a Vezina contender after being up 3-0? Uh... I know the Bruins did that in 2010, but I don't remember if Rask was a nominee that year. Doubt it as Tim Thomas would take over next year.
-
Predictions for round 2 (North division still in round 1 because they started later):
East division:
Bruins over Islanders in 6
No need to underestimate the fellas from Long Island. They don't have superstars, but they aren't scrubs either. Extremely stingy defensively. So can they stifle the Bruins offense and more importantly the Bruins powerplay? Yes, but for how long? And to top it off Boston is defensively sound too. It seems like a series where if a goalie lets in a weak goal here or there it could sink the team in a series where goals will be hard to come by. But I figure they will be easier to come by for Boston, thus my choice.
Central division:
Lightning over Hurricanes in 6
There is so much to like about Carolina. If they win this series I wouldn't be surprised. But Tampa showed in the first round that they have been a good team all year long even with Steven Stamkos missing some time (the last month of the regular season. Can't remember if he missed some time earlier) and Kucherov who missed the entire regular season gave em an extra boost in round one that makes the defending champs look as dangerous as ever.
West division:
Avalanche over Golden Knights in 5
Maybe I'm giving Colorado too much credit. No Nazem Kadri who will miss the series due to suspension, but even then. I expect these games to be very close most of the time, but Colorado is on a roll and I don't think this very good Vegas team will be able to slow them down. Literally. Colorado is so shifty and fast offensively and Cale Makar on defense is scary in the offensive zone.
I'll pop up some bracket image update once the North division is settled for round 2. It could be decided tonight as Toronto and Montreal play game 6. the second round for the East division begins tonight as well.
-
I don't even know what to say about Toronto anymore. National embarrassment. You aren't the only team that lost a key player either so you can't cry abut no Tavares. Unfortunately, Matthews and Marner couldn't score. Done deal. Matthews had just one goal in the series after being dynamite in the regular season.
So now for my prediction in the North division:
Winnipeg Jets over Montreal Canadiens in 5
Winnipeg were stellar against the top players against Edmonton. Who on Montrela comes close to McDavid and Draisatl (sp?)? Nobody. The Jets seemed like seasoned playoff vets too. You can say "ah, but perhaps Price will steal the series." Well the Jets have Hellybuck (sp?) in net who is likely even better in recent times.
-
https://twitter.com/BradyTrett/status/1400275153070657537
-
Yeah... I wonder how many games that will get him.
In the meantime, the draft lottery happened. Buffalo won the 1st pick. Something to look forward to in western New York I suppose. It's been a brutal 10 year stretch for the Sabres.
Second pick goes to the expansion franchise Seattle Kraken, 3rd pick Anaheim Ducks. My Wings got their usual 6th overall lol. I ain't even mad.
-
Well, my bracket is now fully busted with Boston and Colorado wiping out in the 2nd round. :-\
But hey. That's part of the fun of the NHL playoffs. There ain't no sure thing. With that the final 4 is:
Vegas vs Montreal
Tampa Bay vs. New York Islanders
I'm done predicting. I just know that I would like a Tampa/Vegas final.

Tampa and NYI kick things off on Sunday
