question: since I have HDMI now, that means I can upscale without using the VGA adapter, correct?

yup, and everything should look crisper too.  The main advantage that the PS3 had over an older 360 was HDMI.   Everything just looks cleaner when the signal is going through HDMI instead of going through VGA or Component.  With HDMI, the 360's picture should actually have an edge over the PS3 because the 360 can scale all games to 1080p while the PS3 can't upscale 720P games.
