well, as a non-fps fan, I got to say the first hour of the game have been great to me
The control scheme is intuitive and accurate, and perhaps because of the freeflow look made possible with the wiimote, the game has an organic feel when running around that didn't make me feel sick. I was able to do the first couple of battles with space pirates or whomever without getting too disoriented, all in all I'd have to say the controls were everything I hoped for when I first heard about the wiimote.
And honestly, they are better than I thought possible after playing wii up until this point. I think they set a new standard. The other ways to interact with the game are pretty interesting as well. Luckily for me the game has a built in brightness setting, so I'm able to see most of the details, I can't really comment on the graphics though. They look fantastic to me, but just about everything does nowadays.
I'm very excited and sort of pissed that I have to go to bed. It's been awhile since I wanted to stay up gaming. Can't wait for Halo 3 now, I wonder how it will feel to go back to dual analog (as a non fps fan.)
I immediately switched to advanced mode and except for a couple of hiccups it's been very smooth. I've had a lot easier time keeping my viewpoint focused on what I want to look at while running around (not necessarily straight in front of me). With dual analog, I get stuck spinning around and have a hard time strafing around and focusing my shots on my enemies, I wasn't having those problems tonight. For the record the fps I've played the most was Halo 1, which I thought controlled well. This seems far superior to me, much closer to the kb/mouse combo.
I have played fps on pc and do not have the same control problems that I do on consoles.
Some of the problems I have with fps cannot be fixed with control schemes, but I'm hoping my new widescreen plasma will help. I feel closed in, as the viewpoint is supposed to accurately show what your eyes see, but gaming on a 4x3 tv I miss the peripheral vision and it can make me disoriented after some time.
I'm really excited to play this game in 16x9, but I wasn't having the same "boxed-in" feeling tonight because of what I referred to the "freeform" look. As I was running around, the slightest glance with the wiimote would let me focus on what I wanted to look at, almost on instinct. It's very accurate and seems very natural to me.
There is a shitload in there to scan so far if you want to, but doesn't seem to be a lot that you have to scan.
