So while I was downloading the free shitty games that Ubisoft released yesterday, I saw over on Bluesnews that there was a demo for a game with the following description:
"fantasy-themed turn-based strategy game"
That send my beard tingling. I must try this game! So I downloaded the demo for FANTASY WARS, a 1C published game being made by Ino-Co, which apparently is one of those Russian companies that are starting to pop up in legion to make games largely based on or outright remakes of DOS and early Win95 era PC classics.
As it turns out, this game plesantly suprised me. The game is basically a total rip on the old SSI Fantasy General game-lightweight hex-based turn based strategy with an emphasis on keeping the game moving without bogging down in any real micromanagement. The game is techincally competent and features a good mix of RPG (unit upgrades/item inventory), turn-based strategy (moving units around with movement points, attack/defense values) and even some wargaming elements (morale, terrain bonuses) all in a decent package (like Fantasy General did).
Anyway if you're into HoMM or the old SSI general games, check out this demo. I was plesantly suprised and enjoyed it.
