and boy are my arms tired.  But seriously folks. . .

I'm a chunk of the way through the game, and the rebalancing really brings it to a Bejeweled level of simple puzzle zen.  It's not difficult, but it's involving enough that you feel like it's not playing itself.  If you want to strategize, you can, in more than one way even, but is it necessary?  Not really.  You can leave everything up to luck if you want.  Puzzle zen, you could actively meditate under that tree; puzzle tao, you can be the stone in the stream that the puzzles themselves flow around.  It's a phenomenal game, and I highly, highly recommend the retooled version.  Even if the PSP had cold fusion batteries, I couldn't have put nearly a full day straight of playing into that version.  My PSP would have gotten snapped in half, whipped across the room, or crammed in my cats ass.  That's not very eastern religion-y folks.  The previous, portable versions of Puzzle Quest are something violent, hateful, and terrible, like Christianity, in comparison to the new version's puzzletastic yellow religion.

Anyway, this post has a point.  Puzzle Quest 360 has an issue:  the 360's d-pad is about as precise as trying to whack a woman in the clit with a mudshark in the early 1970s.  Moreso than the game's still occasionally irking gem drops, it was accidental mispresses on that thing that made me blow moves and get raped by the machine.  i'm almost ready to try and find the mod instructions to make the d-pad good.

But now I am done puzzling for the day.  To E4 and Katamari!

it's basically bejeweled with stats and loot from what I've played in the demo.  I don't get why people like it so much.

Because it's bejeweled with stats and loot?  HOW CAN YOU ASK FOR MORE.

Basically.  I'm waiting for Tim Rogers to write a long and terrible piece about how Puzzle Quest is poking fun at the absurdity of modern gameplay conventions, what with battles being resolved via puzzle and all.  Actually, that would be kind of high brow for him, and he's probably have trouble working his jaunt to the 7-11 to buy the jappy equivalent of an egg salad sandwich into it.

Why should the shitty d-pad really matter in this game? Does it get to a point where there's a time limit for each turn?

Now Puzzle Fighter, that's a game where the shitty d-pad comes into play.

I dont even use the D-Pad when maneuvering the game. You can play with or without a time limit, Cajole.

Yea, I saw the option, but I figured maybe late on in the game it forced you to play with a time limit or something. It was the only explanation I could think of for complaining about the d-pad in this game.

Now Puzzle Fighter, that's a game where the shitty d-pad comes into play.

It's a game with 4 directional gridded movement, thus it is made for a d-pad.  Also, in puzzle games of this model, one typical presses the selection key and the d-pad direction at the same time, so although one can take their time during turns and figuringout their move, they typically perform their actual move with 2 presses at once, so hitting the wrong
 button is a possibility.

I definitely love it.  I might have to take a day or two off now to prevent burnout, but that was awesome.

I've logged quite a few too many hours in this. I wish the "random" encounters were avoidable. Part of the game keeps you confined to a certain section of the map while the other half fills up with shit monsters, making it a pain in the ass to go anywhere.

You get the avoid option for some of them.  I thought you got that if you already captured a monster, but that doesn't appear to be the case, because I get it with shit I know I have captured.

That is the one big complaint I still have with the game.  I would probably be playing now if I knew I could make quick progress.

Especially with all the quests in Kor, you walk up and down that narrow strip over and over, spawning shit on the western side of the map. When you finally have to go back over there you have to kill 6 or 7 things to get anywhere.

On the upside, I got 2 heroic efforts in a row. Which made up for all of the game's clairvoyance.

I had to quit last night because I got to a battle with an enemy with some cheesy skill, and I died twice.  It was one of those battles I would have won eventually via either skill or luck (who can tell with this game!) but it would have been easier to switch up skills,a dn I just wasn't in the mood for that at the time.

I am close to the end of the game.  Close enough to give my final impressions (with all achievements).

Now, I haven't gotten to the final boss yet, but the last 2 bosses have leaned heavily on random cheapness, so that is what I am expecting for the finale, just moreso.  My final impressions take into account that the last boss will probably make me cat rapingly frustrated.

It has taken about 30 hours to get where I am, and it was only yesterday, post-23 hour spree, that the game started to get long in the tooth.  Now, this wasn't because I was getting tired of the game, but because the time I started yesterday was when the game started pulling out cheap tricks.

The fair stuff:  Difficulty was increased by giving enemies better skills.  They heal now, do more damage, and don't seem to mind spamming direct damage skills over and over, whereas previously the AI seemed to have a general policy of only ever using a skill once in a row, regardless of mana.

The maybe fair stuff:  I must have hit a milestone mark that notched the AI up.  It now appears to be the same AI as the PSP version, aka brutal.  Never misses a skull match, never misses 4 in a row.  I mean, that's fair, right?  I am at the end of the game.  The unfair part is that in addition to the AI bump, much like the PSP game, gem drops now seem to weigh heavily in the PCs favor.  Sometimes it seemed like that before, but now it's like. . .it's confirmed.  Even chump random encounters exhibit this behaviour, which is what gives things away.  The PC will get chains of 5 (or more) in a row every fight, and when the PC makes a move, the board has the tendency to drop 3 or 4 skulls, doing instant damage without effort.

Ok, annoying, cheesy, but hey, it's the endgame and the game is kind of easy.  You can still win via randomness, too.  This is livable.

The bad stuff:  The game put on a convincing show of being based on fair probability before.  Now, late in the game, well, as indicated above, this has changed in some not terrible ways.  It has, however, also changed terribly in other regards.  Take what was mentioned in my last big paragraph and crank it to 11.  Random encounters and, especially, bosses now exhibit some extremely annoying, extremely unfair behavior.

Let's go over bosses, first.  The last boss I fight had the ability to randomly (as in she didn't have to do anything specific) spawn skulls via turning a random gem anywhere on the board into the skull.  Naturally, since the game is leaning towards unfair, these skulls would appear in extremely favorable positions for her.  Namely, during her turn, if there were two adjacent skulls anywhere on the board, a third skull would appear randomly next to them, doing instant damage to me.  Sometimes it would be a +5 skull.  The skulls would never appear in a position that would allow me to rape with skulls.

The boss before her also had a similar insanely bowerful skill.  He could turn all red gems on the board into skulls, and then take another turn.  Anyone familiar with the game could tell you that this meant frequent 1 turn kills.  The enemy got to strike first, and twice, twice in a row, he 1 turn killed me before I even got a move.  The AI never missing 4 in a rows was in full effect, too.  My ass got RAPED.

But those were bosses.  I could live with the cheese there, especially since the game is totally 100% fair with losing battles.  The REAL annoying stuff has to do with the endgame random encounters.  Many of these encounters are with LICHES and ARCHLICHES.  These also have the Randomly Spawn Skulls thing going on, making a one time annoying encounter a permanent fixture in the late game.  I encounter what was potentially the most annoying ability in the game every five minutes now.

What's worse about the random encounters is the clock padding via their frequency.  Most missions at this stage involve you walking all the way across the map, which means you might encounter upwards of 10 random encounters in a single back-and-forth quest.  This isn't Eternal Sonata or Blue Dragon:  random encounters take a chunk of time to do.  You can safely say that each one takes, oh, let's say 5 minutes.  More if you come across an enemy that heals or has lich-like annoying abilities.  Every RPG is probably like, at least 2/3rds random encounters, but I bet that this game would be like 5 hours long if it didn't have them.  I will never, evre bitch about random encounters again.

Overall, though, can I really complain?  These are the last 5 hours or so at the tail end of what has been a 30-35 hour game.  Most people don't beat games at all, so they will never really know how iffy the last few hours are.  Coupled with a cheap price, you'd be a fool not to get this game.  You can play it while fucking around on the computer, you can play it drunk, you can put some decent strategies together, you can die as many times as you'd like with no real negative effect, it's far improved over the PSP version, it's got easy achievements, it's a 2d game that is actually in HD (and looks pretty good with some occasional good art, even if it veers towards the generic), lots of skills, pretty fun multiplayer (I raped demi) although I probably won't play it again.  The goods far outweigh the bads here.  My last real complaint is one mentioned by Patel last night:  the game is kinda too long.  The thing is that you don't really play this for the story, so that's really not that much of a negative.

GET THIS GAME, though I think I don't need to say that here.

cheapest enemy, sir barik

why?

circlet of sartek, adds 2% resistance to every element for every 4 of a kind
and 3% for every 5 of a kind.

Combine this with the Ai's amazing luck and I have never been more infuriated in my entire life

hes not even a  boss but he must of took me three times to beat, pretty much have to lay into him with spells in the first five minutes before they become compeletely useless. thankfully I dont think human players can use this item

Also, resistances in the game are borked.  Nothing like a dude with 1% resistance blocking multiple spells in a single battle!

FYI, you can avoid the stronger monster encounters by leveling up your Mount. I had like a level 20+ Griffin or something (on the PSP version) and I could pretty much avoid almost all the monsters (the last area monsters being the exception)

I'm pretty sure the speed of the mount also has an effect on how often you avoid battles.  Griffons are the fastest mounts, IIRC.

level 42

strategy? I changed up my equipment a bit

helm of the ram - adds 2 damage for anything over 5
eriks bow adds 1 plus damage plus 1 more for every 8 levels

I match regular skulls for 13 damage

I used hand of power (wizard spell) to add 2/4 more damage

I also used fireball on skulls i couldnt match up which does 8 damage plus whatever I destroy
