What is/was/will be your major in college?
« on: October 28, 2007, 04:03:30 AM »
I was reading that thread on GAF about useless degrees so I was wondering what everyone's degree was in college and what their job is now.

I'm a junior right now majoring in Biology. I'm applying for med school next year like the 99% of other biology students. If I don't get into med school, I'm not sure what I'm going to do. Maybe grad school? Become a teacher?

O thank god for this thread, I've spent the last three hours looking at unis and I feel sick.  Very sick.

I have come to the realization that I'm going to be equally miserable in what ever I do.  I wanted to do software engineering and use that to launch myself into game design but i realize that even if I get to a design position I'll probably just end up making licensed games for kids.  I also found that my love of coding is just in the sense of discovery and logic that I have to use to get things to where I want to and that once it becomes routine I will hate it like no other.  Also I think my love of gaming is dying, I find simple imperfections in games make any game utterally unbearable nowadays and can't even go though an hour of playing a game with out turning it off.

So...I think I'm going into philosophy.   :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

This means that my end goals are to wright (Drinky stop laughing) and to teach.  This means getting a Ph.D which means a hell of a lot of school and money, and about a 2% chance of it ever working, which is a 98% chance of me just waisting all that time and money only to shot myself for being a failure.

So I'm looking at uni's right now and u of Austin and u of Pittsburg seem good, with moderate entry level, which with my crappy highschool grades i might just make.  Fuck I suck.

fathermike, don't get a fucking philosophy degree.  you want to hear a teacher whine like a vagina about some fuck from 100 years ago preaching about government, then take the class for G.E. credits.  get a real degree so you can at least BUY the things you're getting bored of.

oh, and I'm undeclared but I'm going into a science major.

Decided against it for various reasons.  Besides, I'm not sure how it's set up in Canada, but here in the States you can major in anything you like in undergrad, since medical school is postgrad (i.e., a professional school).  Certain majors help your chances of getting in for various reasons, but nothing is mandated.

IMO nowadays(depending in which state too) you cannot do shit with a bachelors anymore unless its a 5 year program like arch. or engies. or again nursing. At least this is pretty much how it works in Cali., aside from the growing competition real estate prices are incredibly high which really inhibits anybody on a BS-type salary to start a life. Medical school in canadia typically works as an undergrad bachelors degree program that you enroll in after 2 years of college, it takes 5 years. But say some canadian unis like mcgill do accomodate our medical school progression (i.e 4 years + bachelorz) but then you get to pay american fees so meh.

With just a bachelors no. But that's where experience comes in. If you have a Bachelors and lots of experience you can do pretty well. As opposed to a masters and no experience.

Nothing related to the degree.  I may still try to obtain a Master's in psych and do child counseling, but who knows.  Right now I'm doing market analysis/client relations at a technology consulting firm, though I've been transitioning to project management recently.  I've also been debating whether I should give freelance business/technical writing a go, but I tend to stop before I start since I'm a pessimist by nature. :P
