wii ownership, day 5: it still sucks
« on: October 29, 2007, 09:29:08 PM »
so my component cables just came in. wii's output is really soft in 480p. i'm using one of those monoprice 3-in-1 component cables, so my ps2 can share the input -- its signal is faintly noisy when it's plugged into the wii, and i thought it was the cables at first, but they work perfectly with my ps2. i don't know if i should bother trying different cables...the wii's audio output is notoriously shoddy, so maybe its video output is too.

which brings me to another thing -- this console is a money-sink. i downloaded sin and punishment, which still fucking rocks: but i had to buy $20 of wii points to buy the $12 game, and the absence of configuration options make it awkward to play on a gamecube pad. so now i want a $20 classic controller. and the sensor bar is an eyesore and a constant impediment, so i need to pick up an aftermarket wireless version. that's about $320 down the toilet, and i haven't got any games yet.

and boy: last year it was all 'have you got a wii? have you got a wii?' now nobody gives a shit. wii's release schedule isn't even enough to keep nongamers interested.

i'm gonna go rent zack and wiki, if they've got it -- only capcom can save us now

the Wii's picture quality sucks shit and is an enormous embarassment, it's the biggest hidden vice of this generation; don't do any more efforts to make it better because it's rotten to the core, and the GameCube looked 5x better and richer in comparison... even PS2 games look much better

usually, I have more fun by triggering random options in the 360 dashboard or the XMB than playing actual Wii titles

and yes, it's absolutely scandalous when you ponder how much money Nintendo will make by selling so many different controllers, it's not for no reason that it's been marketed almost exclusively as a local multiplayer system, it's because that's where most of Nintendo's profits are going to come from

don't buy the Classic Controller btw, it's one of the worst, one of the most anti-ergonomic pads ever

also it's true that the sensor pad is awful, you always lose your Wii remote signal

fuck, is there any positive aspect about the Wii other than the opportunities that it offers for scorn and gloating?

because many elite forum users who also happen to be videophiles bought the Wii because they thought its games, while SD, would look as good as GameCube ones when used with component cables, which couldn't be farther from the truth

if that piece of white ivory plastic didn't play Fire Emblem I'd go on a bridge and throw it in the St-Lawrence river

The wii is the shittiest console I've ever owned, and this is my honest opinion. I've had more freaking fun with my second hand 3do.

Sin and Punishment is no easier to play on the Classic Controller (worse, even).

When they were recoding it just for the Wii it would have been nice if they put a "not terrible" control scheme in but oh well.

Drohne, maybe you should check out the official component cables.  I get very little noise with the official cables but of course the graphics still suck.

I'm one of those Wii owners that don't usually turn it on unless non-gaming friends/relatives come over.  Titles that I would recommend you try are: Zelda:TP, MP3, Trauma Center, and Tony Hawk:Downhill.  Zelda's widescreen support and add on waggling actually made the game more enjoyable for me but some people prefer traditional controls.  Tony Hawk got mediocre reviews but it's a pretty fun arcade game.  I haven't checked out MLB Power Pros and the new Mecury Meltdown yet but they've gotten pretty good reviews.

I saw a lot more WII titles when I was in Japan this summer but I bet they're mostly crap too.

the problems with s+p on the gamecube pad are:

1. movement is on the d-pad and fire is on the left trigger -- when you're double-tapping the d-pad to roll or tapping the trigger to swing your sword, things get really messy

2. you have to aim with the stupid nipplestick

if nintendo had implemented a basic system-level configuration screen, i could switch things around and probably improve on the original n64 scheme...but this is nintendo. so the classic controller sucks? i might try to mod a gc pad...switch the right and left sticks, certainly. and while it's been ages since i've soldered anything, it might not be hard to switch the functions of the right and left triggers. then i'd have a CUSTOM SIN AND PUNISHMENT PAD. and odds are that sin and punishment will remain the best use for a wii.

and i'm probably being a little anal about the video noise -- i can only see it clearly if i freeze the image or sit way off angle. but i don't have this problem with any of my other consoles. i'm not keen on buying $35 official cables...in my experience they're no better than the ones from respected internet sources like monoprice...and the official ps2 cables are actually worse.

It's the weakest of the FE games that has made it to NA.  I still liked it, but the strategy is simple enough that it feels better as a handheld game than a console game, too.

if the multi-cable is the problem, shouldn't it also produce noise with my ps2? i might try one of monoprice's standard wii component cables -- they're really cheap -- but the multi-cable is so convenient for my setup that i'd almost rather live with the noise. and before anyone suggests it, i know i shouldn't plug the cable into multiple systems at once

i didn't think i'd buy a wii either -- beyond galaxy there's nothing i'd pay full price for -- but i'm bad at the whole impulse control thing. probably best to get the wii experiment out of my system now, when i can play galaxy at launch and then maybe ebay the thing during the christmas rush. i've never sold a console before...but i can't see much reason to keep it. my expectations for galaxy aren't even that high -- i doubt i could believe the desperate overhype if i wanted to

anybody have a spare gamecube controller to unload, btw? doesn't matter if it's broken -- i just need to scavenge a left analog stick

I guess it could depend on how it was wired. With the one I had the picture quality when they were all plugged in went ps2>dreamcast>gamecube.

I got my reserve for Mario Galaxy this thursday, but I'm not hyped at all.  I never liked Mario 64 and found Sunshine okay.  I HOPE Galaxy turns out to be awesome, but I no longer have faith in Nintendo's console games to turn out this way.  The GAF hype thread is out of control, but I haven't really bothered reading it.  I haven't even watched a single video for the game yet.  I kept reading "Man, Nintendo is going ALL OUT in Japan!  ADS EVERYWHERE!!!" and I have seen a grand total of ONE commercial for it on TV so far. This commercial featured a little boy and his father playing together: The father is moving a "2P" cursor around the screen blowing up all the enemies with the press of a button, and the kid moves Mario over to collect the shit they drop.  YAY EXCITING.  :-\  Great way to sell the game, Nintendo!

But I'm not hating.  I'm not enough of a fanboy that I don't realize that this console isn't geared towards me.

I saw a lot more WII titles when I was in Japan this summer but I bet they're mostly crap too.

Nothing Japanese-only comes to mind that's worth it other than Gundam.  There is this one mini-game collection with Taito stuff in it I want to check out one day though.  It's also on the DS.

I dont get the classic control hate, its a sweet pad.

Yeah, I agree.  It's a good pad; it's been fine for SNES games and Guilty Gear, but then I don't mess with the analog part so for all I know that sucks.

Quote

When the Wii has actual REAL games, and not "casual" or "non-gamer" crap, it's okay.  I fucking loved playing Biohazard 4 with the Wiimote, and now I'm enjoying Ghost Squad.  The problem is that this machine clearly isn't made for the hardcore gamer, and Nintendo is making fucking boatloads of money off the non-gamer stuff to care.  The system is full of ports or generic Nintendo mascot sequel #2320003203203.  That's the problem, but there still are some good titles available.  I think the Wii has an overall better line-up than the PS3 does right now, as sad as that is.

Just take the Wii for what it is: The party machine.  It's what you break out when people are over who aren't really into video games.  If you don't care about that and/or don't care about owning every current system, then don't fucking buy a Wii.

Path of Radiance is a turd, avoid that one, just play the GBA ones

I thought this was the Wii version, cuz GC = Wii.  I LOL'd.

i actually think galaxy's 'two player' mode is pretty clever -- i won't have much use for it now, but when i was a kid i remember my friend would sit there with a zapper while i played final fantasy, shooting enemies for good luck. maybe most kids aren't quite that stupid, but they do sit around while their friends play single-player games, and galaxy provides an active variation on that. i'd imagine it's nice for parents as well, though i condone neither mirrors nor copulation, which increase the numbers of men

Yeah, it was pretty clever when it was called "Zelda The Wind Waker" on the Game Cube-- you threw bombs and shit down as Tingle using a Gameboy Advance.  This isn't anything new.

That's coming to America from Majesco (with the original title "Furu Furu Park" intact), It'll be out here eventually, even though it don't look so hot.

I've got the offical Ninty component cables and the picture quality is still rather assey.  I would advise Drohne to live with it or segregate the Wii to as good a standard definition television as he can get, because that's as good a picture that the Wii will ever put out.

My HDTV has a VGA output, I was entertaining the notion of getting the Wii VGA Cableto use on my TV, but I'll probably just get the same jagtastic blur that I've got now, just on a different channel.
the thing of it is, the Wii still has the light gun shooters, quirky puzzle games (Mercury Meltdown, Trauma Center, and Zack and Wiki really are all that), and other oddball genres that I consider essental.  If the visual output didn't suck SOOOOOOOO much ass, I'd be a full-on Wii booster boy.

I don't even mind the greatly reduced horsepower, if only I could get a better then shit image quality out of my system, I'd have no complaints.
well, fewer complaints.

Mario 64 gave my pant elastic a big work out and then Sunshine made my rock hard member flacid.

Well, I pretty much universally hated just about everything Nintendo made on the Nintendo 64 and found the Game Cube to be a step up.  At the time, I was playing Jumping Flash! 2, which I thought was (and still think is) better than Mario 64.  That game was 3D platforming done RIGHT.  Anyway, the best thing about Sunshine were those bonus stages with PLATFORM JUMPING and the classic music playing in the background.  That alone was fucking better than anything in Mario 64.

I generally loathe collecting, so I'm glad to hear it seems that there's less of a focus on it.

I mostly liked this genre when I was young, SM64 pretty much topped what a platformer could accomplish in 3D

one day perhaps that you'll grow up too, you don't want to end up like GAFers in their mid-thirdies who get all aroused over cameo appearances of Nintendo characters in certain of their games

Huh? Mario games really don't have cameo appearances, and I shit on Smash Bros. daily. The fact you would put a fucking NARUTO game over a Mario, platformers that have some of the best controls and platforming in 3d platformers, is distinguished mentally-challenged.

The fact you're putting ANY anime game over Mario says lots about your game taste, dude. I mean, I'm not Wii apologist, but fuck man. Naruto? Ratchet and Clank? Over fucking Mario? And you're telling me to grow up because I'm not letting the Nintendo name get in my way of possibly enjoying what could be one of the best 3d platformers in years? lmao

OK, now that you've suggested me to play it, I have no choice but to try it on day one

You have to jump like 6 times in a Ratchet & Clank game.  In fact if you die during a jumping puzzle in one of these games you're a fucking distinguished mentally-challenged fellow, or six years old.

 :lol

I thought the same thing when I saw some youtube vid that was trying to prove that R&C had great platforming elements.

couldn't find z+w. but i rented trauma center, which is actually kinda neat. i'm pretty bad at it, but it's somehow fun to remember all these procedures and then try to execute them efficiently. don't know if i'll stick with it, but i'm glad i tried it

The classic controller is really damn good, only problem I have is the cord coming from the bottom (didn't people learn their lesson with the DC's controllers?) and having to plug it into the Wiimote. A full wireless solution would've been amazing.
