drinky crow gaming grab bag this all hallow's eve
« on: October 31, 2007, 10:31:28 PM »
bought a fuckload of games. here are some bite-size synopses for your short-ass attention spans. i have spent between 40 minutes to an hour with each of these titles except disgaea, which i have spent roughly ten hours with because it is better than the judeo-christian god.

vf 5 online (X360) -- easily the best version. visually better than the ps3 version, online is better than doa4 (although still not great, because fighting games really shouldn't be played online until we're all on fios), and the load times are about 1.5x that of the ps3 version, since there's no "install to hd" option. also it is version c, it is the best fighting game since vf4evo, and if you even pretend to like fighting games you should buy it now now now.

naruto: rise of a ninja (X360) -- fuck YOU. i bought this because the cel-shading and environments look like naughty naughty animu buttsex. so far, it mixes a shockingly well-animated 60 fps fighting engine with some novel and well-executed controls, a very large explorable environment, and a LOT of item collection. so far, the item collection bits are reasonably fun and very, er, rare-esque in the way that rare-esque collecting shit can be good for the first five hours of it, but we'll see if that holds out, because at the five hour mark collecting shit becomes maddenly repetitive and prone to inducing fits of existential anxiety. the animu bits are wholly palatable, and the pacing is good. it's fuckin' pretty!

disgaea (psp) -- best handheld game OF EVER. jesus christ it is better than the entire ds library combined. it is the ultimate portable experience. i can grind whenever, wherever i want and get STATS and LOOT and LEVELS.

guitar hero 3 (X360) -- eh. the characters are UGLY, but the song lineup is good. i suck at these games and am a casual, so i am ill-suited to judge the larger issue of quality, but it's fun, albeit very much more of the same. it has a heart cover that surprisingly doesn't suck; on the other hand, it has an awful kiss cover. what to do!

Naruto: Rise of the Ninja is out already? :o

Even if the game blows (which sounds like that isn't the case) I would just get the game just for the purty Cell Shaded visuals. Sort of how someone like Mondain would buy a PS3 and some Blu Ray movie just so he can show it off to moms and pops as if its supposed to make them feel better about his inability to function offline.

Yeah Im plodding slowly through Halo3 also, Im up to level 6 now tho! SotN is just too tempting. Im having a blast replaying it WITH ACHIEVEMENTS. Its way easer than I remember tho... all the bosses are super piss easy and all their attacks seem to do 1 point of damage... maybe I bought the sweet armour or something

the simpsons game (x360) -- i've done a couple episodes so far. so far they're basically tutorial levels (havent even unlocked marge and lisa yet). very faithful to the simpsons, lots of voices, jokes, characters. visuals look nice, captures that cartoon look really well. when you finish a level, you can select it from the main menu and go back to find any items and video game cliches you missed. you can also do a time challenge which serves no point except achievements. you can also try and do the regular level under the alloted time, again, no point except achievements. between the levels, you can run around Springfield sort of like GTA, more of an overworld hub, where the various simpsons characters walk around and stammer funny quotes. HUGE GLITCH in this game however, during the second episode, the sound completely CUT OUT, making me play in silence. i had to exit to dash and restart the game to fix this. it's pretty simple, i've done the time challenges and finished the regular levels in under time for the two story levels i've done so far. i think it's pretty enjoyable, and i'd imagine i could finish this within a weekend rental if i didn't care about getting achievements. which i do. it was developed by EA Redwood, and with the recent rumors of layoffs, i had to pick it up for work related purposes, and that is the excuse i'm sticking with.

Im a collection whore too :/ Hell Im a Nintendogs apologist for that reason. Holy shit the collection aspect in that game is thugged out to the max. I just spent 1/2 an hour on GAF, what a fucken nightmare, I swear that board gets more and more fucked up.

I hate to say it but I agree with what Mondain said, the groupthink there is absolutley horrible. 2/3rds of the posts I read today were either to do with review scores being spoilered, or "so basically its worse than *insert game here*"

Theres a WHOLE lot of shit to do. Grinding EXP and Gold, Item World, Getting each and every class (and the upgraded version of each class), getting Monsters (and the upgraded version of each monster :lol ), Ultimate Gear...

...god I fucken love this game. But to start it off, you can either gring enough to get through the regular story (progressively) or after the Tutorial map, you can dive head on into the Item World (the best aspect of the game), or you can try grinding for a bit. Remember, you can lift and throw monsters into other monsters which will level up one of them (combining both monster levels). Its a great way to level up already overleveled characters.
