I'll never forget seeing it in the theater. The bottle scene literally shocked the entire audience; I've never seen women literally flinch in unison, grabbing for their boyfriend's hands. After that point a line was crossed, and everyone seemed to greet the Capitan with a level of trepidation; each time it slowly became clear a torture or violent episode was about to erupt, the audience collectively held their breath. I've never witnessed that before.

The lip/back scene was worse than the bottle scene imo, and lead to even more gasps; interestingly, the men in the audience seemed to react loudest to the scene after that, where the Capitan drank the alcohol with his wounded mouth
