What's the longest you've gone without sleep?
« on: November 13, 2007, 12:42:35 AM »
I woke up yesterday at 7 am and I crammed overnight for a test this morning.  I drank 2 cans of Game Fuel, 5 cups of tea, 1 coke, 1 caffeinated red bull-like drink to keep myself awake.  After the test ended,  I was still too buzzed to fall asleep so I got some lunch.  I then finally fell asleep in my car around 1 PM.  I woke up 2 hrs later for the rest of the day's activities.  So altogether,  I stayed awake for 30hrs before going to sleep.  Fuck med school.

30hrs is a cakewalk.  I can easily stay awake for 3-4 days, without real stimulant abuse, even caffeine.  I don't get tired and I often have to drug myself to fool me into sleep.

Back when I abused drugs, as a teenager, I believe my record was in the neighborhood of a week to ten days, although that cost at the time a considerable amount of money and I was probably crazy by the end.

The longest I've been awake for has been for over 72 hours.  Once you reach that point, you start to feel numb and everything starts to seem unreal.  You start thinking you don't need to sleep anymore, but your judgment is severely compromised and you do shit you wouldn't normally do because your brain isn't functioning normally and you don't think of the consequences in a realistic way.

Jesus Christ.  I wish I could go a few days without sleep.

I'm a glutton for sleep actually, its my worst vice, as I can easily sleep 12 hours a day everyday if I'm left to do so.

TVC, you're crazy.  How can anyone not die or come close to it without sleeping for a week? I remember those obsessed gamers died after just 3 days of non-stop gaming.

The longest I've gone without is probably like a day and a half or 2 days.

This had more to do with growing up in an economically depressed area where being a delinquent was among the only things to do as a teenager.

I'm not a good model for what a med student should be like, to say the least.  lol  I game probably around 10-20 hrs a week and waste equally as much time on the internet or movies.  A lot of it is just due to bad studying habits that I've had since I was a child.  Even though I know it would be painful, I often wait until the last day or 2 to study for several weeks of material.  I learn and remember fast enough to get away with it but it really is not conducive for long term learning or a healthy lifestyle.   I really have to try much harder at getting rid of my bad habits because the board test's coming up in a few months and it's killa.

Was that the same time as our first homosexual experience too?  Was it 6 hours of fun, 24 of repentance?

I know it's not impressive. I'm gonna really test myself in a couple weeks, trust me. You can do it with me, and when you're really fucked up from sleep deprivation I'll ask you for your phonenumber and you'll give it to me like a fool

The thing is my brain still had to operate at a high enough level to cram several hundred items and do a pretty tough test within 30 hrs.   If you're just talking about staying awake, I could probably last anouther 10 hrs or so.

That's exactly how I am with tests. Obviously I'm not as smart as you, so it doesn't work as well for me. Usually I wind up annoyed, like damn if I only studied 11 hours and still got a 75%, what could I achieve with a week of studying..

The craziest thing I ever did in undergrad was wait until the last day to do a 20pg term paper.  I read the books for 16 hrs straight and then did the paper in 5-6 hrs.  I actually missed the deadline by an hour or two but luckily the Prof hadn't checked his mailbox yet.  I ended up getting an A- which I was perfectly happy with.   :lol

Impressive. I waited until the last day to do a 14pg term paper. I didn't do as well as you, though. I was also a freshmen taking a junior level history class just because it seemed cool. Also at a college much better than the one I currently attend. Best class I've ever taken.

Yeah, that type of stuff is easy for me. I did a take home, 10 page midterm on African American sociology/history in less than a day. I hadn't read any of the coarse work but was able to find what I needed fast enough. Got an A

If you write something in one long stretch, chances are if anything it will be pretty cohesive and not disjointed.  Written on one train of thought and all.  It might not be, you know, as totally coherent as something written over a period, but I think doing a lot of writing in one stretch is usually a plus when it comes to quality.

History classes in College are really cool.  I sat through a Euro history class for a few weeks but unfortunately I had to drop it to make room for something else.  I wouldn't mind just sitting in a history class for fun though.

That's pretty cool that you were still able to finish your paper on time.  It's always hard for a college student to do his 1st research paper because the standards are so much higher than High School.  The strict enforcement of proper citation is enough to give a freshman headache.

The teacher was one of the leading scientists in his field though.  I was really surprised to get that grade because I thought he would know for sure that it was a express paper.

No.  I was only there because I was on drugs.  Not the hallucinatory kind, either.  I have never hallucinated from lack of sleep, drug induced or not.  Well, maybe small auditory "did I just hear something?" things, but nothing real.  Even when taking hallucinogenic drugs, I rarely, if ever, had actual hallucinations.  Something of a disappointment to me because that's what I wanted.

Oh, that shit doesn't count.  They don't mean they saw little bugs, they meant they saw little, tiny moving particles.  This happens when, in my experience, your eyes get exhausted and it becomes difficult to focus on things.  I can make my eyes go lazy and get this effect whenever I want.

Well yea, I can do that too when I rub my eyes hard. But this dude made it sound like he was seeing bugs and midgets, things that sound very intriguing to me

I was hallucinating after a 4 day adderall binge.  Mostly auditory, but some visual in the form of weird light effects and colors.  Also, it should be noted that driving after even 30+ hours is an awful, awful idea.  After 4 days, you would probably be better off with a fifth of some really cheap rum sloshing around in your belly.

No that is different. Phoenix Dark is talking about actually hallucanations. You are thinking of protein deposits. http://www.medterms.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=7945

Spots in front of the eyes: Also known as "floaters", blurry spots that drift in front of the eyes but do not block vision. The blur is the result of debris from the vitreous casting a shadow on the retina. The spot is the image formed by a deposit of protein drifting about in the vitreous, the clear jelly-like substance that fills the middle of the eye.

Floaters are often described by patients as spots, strands, or little flies. Some patients even want to use a fly-swatter to eliminate these pesky floaters.

Floaters are usually benign (not serious). They can result from a separation of the vitreous gel from the retina. This condition is called a posterior vitreous detachment (PVD). Although a PVD occurs commonly, there are no retinal tears associated with the condition most of the time.

No treatments are available for floaters although they tend to become less annoying over time. Remember also that floaters are usually not associated with serious eye problems.

Permanent or recurring white or black spots in the same area of your field of vision may, however, be an early warning sign of cataracts or another serious eye problem. If you experience a shadow or curtain that affects any part of your vision, this can indicate that a retinal tear has occurred and has progressed to a detached retina. In this situation, you should immediately consult an ophthalmologist since time is of the essence.

Out of curiosity, how long does it take you guys to fall asleep once you lay down? I've always been amazed at the people that manage to fall asleep almost instantly, normally it takes me a good 5-10 minutes to fall asleep.

Nah, I wasn't talking about floaters.  What I am talking about is when your eyes get exhausted, if you try to focus on something, if conditions are right, you will see hundreds, possibly thousands of little dots.  Come to think of it, it only seems to happen indoors or at night, so too much light probably prevents it.  Floaters are different.  I get them, too.

The longest I've gone without sleep was about 40 hours (stayed up the night before a sleep-over when I was 12).  It was easy.  I could probably go a lot longer if I had a free schedule and steady supply of junk food ready.

What impressive to me isn't when people take drugs and are in college and stay up for a week, it's the people that travel across continents regularly.  Going from U.S. to Italy meant that I left around 2 P.M. and got to Rome around like 8 A.M. the next day but I had to go through all the airport security and noise and general boredom and it really feels horrible.  also when you go to a city you don't know and are trying to get used to their roads and find your hotel while sleepy and it's the middle of the night there and you go to an italian grocery store and buy a bottle of water and drink it and find out it's carbonated water, you get a little pissed.
