I dont smoke, almost ever. Tho a good cigar is nice once in a while. I made the mistake of having the following after 6pm.

Grande Drip
5 shots of scotch
Cigar

I can't sleep for shit. God damnit.

hrm...I forget, my early drinking was 'the hard stuff'. Irish Whiskey or Scotch are better for newbz than say Bourbon (Whiskey from teh South) which is a kick in the teeth. Specifically if you want to ease into hard alcohol neat, go for a blended Scotch like Cutty Sark or maybe a French Vodka. Russian Vodka is also a kick to the teeth if you dont pick your brand right. Pinnacle is a nice inexpensive French Vodka that I like.

I REALLY like Grey Goose, but the 30 dollar bottle lasts like two sittings, and im rarely sober enough to tell the difference at the end of the night cept I know it makes my wallet ache. Oh, and Brandy isn't a bad way to go either if youre new to hard booze, but its got a sweet flavor to it im not always in the mood for. E&J is probably my favorite Brandy so far but ive only had a go at about three different labels.

Nah, I can respect a mixed drink. Screwdrivers and Whiskey Sours are respectable MANLY mixed drinks. If you like mixed drinks go for it. Long Islands are also good if the bartender mixes them well.

Have any specific mixes you'd recommend?
Do you just get used to drinking stuff like Vodka straight one sip at a time, or is it like a transition? My sis-in-law is VERY anti-drinking and says stuff like "People who drink alcohol are loosers with no life" "If it's an acquired taste than that shows it's bad for you" etc.

Well the key is to not drink JUST to get drunk. I actually have only vomited from too much drink once, and that was when I drank scotch then slammed an ice cold soda right before I fell asleep. Woke up two hours later and vomited.

In MOST situations I drink to get buzzed, which is a different ball game. Part of being a grown up is the opportunity to tell others to buzz off when you want do something on your own time.

If you want to get used to the idea of drinking things neat drink things on ice for a while then try neat again. As for mixes, the general rule for sour mixes is that the brighter the mix, the sweeter it is. A TRUE whiskey sour is sour, not sweet. Go for a dull colored sour mix and that should be good. If your REALLY hardcore you caan make the Whiskey Sour from scratch, but I dunno if its worth the trouble sometimes.

Just jumping in here, do you know how many things that are GOOD for you are also an "acquired taste"?

I drink vodka straight. I'm a very petite and pretty girly 22-year-old woman. Drink whatever you like.

I agree with MAF about certain vodkas being a kick in the teeth if you get the wrong brand, though! I like to stick with Absolt, Smirnoff, and Skyy. Last night I was like sipping Absolut Citron instead of just throwing all my shots back, and it wasn't bad at all. Had it been a cheap-ass bottle of vodka though, my entire face would have burned.

I've seen this recipie but i've never tried it, I just use a sour mix:

2 oz blended whiskey
juice of 1/2 lemons
1/2 tsp powdered sugar
1 cherry
1/2 slice lemon

Sour mix is also fine with Vodka of course since Vodka is such a mixable booze

Yeah, but it's not really a good way to deal with it. I've known a few people that have just drank through their problems instead of trying to fix them.

Bourbon is a harsh mistress, I drink A LOT of stuff neat and I still dont care for most bourbons. I hear Canadian Whiskey is somehow worse, or at least ive been warned away from them.

back on topic. the occasional tobacco smoking can get you a nice little buzz but I've never tried alcohol. for some reason tobacco makes me sleepier. maybe it's because I do 10 second "hits" of it where I take a deep breath going really slowly. It's more of a calming effect than a buzz actually. pretty stupid.

If you wanna get into Scotch start with whiskey sours, they use blended scotch for that. Then try blended scotch on the rocks, then neat, then from there move to the single malts.

Cutty Sark is the blended scotch most places uses for whiskey sours. As for vodka Grey Goose rocks but is so fucking expensive, so i'd go with Pinnacle (french vodka) or if youre feeling balsy you should try Stolichnaya (russian vodka).

Well, I had an interesting time last night, I'm not sure if I should be glad or be ashamed. I remembered I had a bottle of Captain Morgans Spice Rum and decided to finish off the bottle (there wasn't that much left) and according to my dad I had an interesting night (this was around 8 or so). The only thing I remember is going to bed, but apparently I did a lot more. I don't know all the details yet when I woke up about 2 hours ago I called him but he was very angry saying stuff like "I'm VERY dissappointed in you, you we're as drunk as a skunk, I don't even want to talk about it now". Keep in mind he's a 54 year old christian fanatic.

However I can tell I did something because my stack of Genesis games are everywhere, a box full of old videogame stuff is ripped open and my left big toe and right knee are pretty bruised. I can't wait to find out everything tomorrow.

Is it normal to be extremely thirsty after drinking a lot? When I woke up I was very thirsty and my mouth was very dry, I ended up drinking 4 glasses of water. Luckily I don't have a hangover though.
