I think it'd be kind of cool, since I'm not racist or anything.  Heck, it could even be a black female!  That'd be something.

Naturally, they'd have to be educated and well-spoken.  It's sort of cute when white politicians use a regional, working-class dialect, but that's cause you worry about them losing touch.  You don't worry about that with black people.

Also, they should be moderate.  A black Republican is good, because they're thinking for themselves (as long as they're not really crazy like Alan Keyes).  If they're a Democrat, they should not be too emotionally tied to, you know, "urban" constituencies.

I don't really want them to list what they think about individual issues.  The important thing for me is that they have a sort of steady calmness about them.  Just be a good, solid leader who's so obviously trustworthy that I know you'll make a fair decision that people can agree with.

Someone like, I dunno, Morgan Freeman.

David Palmer's good.  Normally I grativate to lighter-skinned black candidates, but has a reassuring, James Earl Jones vibe about him.  I think it helps that he's bulky.

He taps all the finest white poon.  He smokes and drinks.  He listens to jazz.  He's friends with convicts.  He's the intergalactic Bill Clinton, and I believe it's been scientifically proven that he's black.

I don't think either would at this point because the Republican party has taken the football, fumbled it, took a shit in the middle of the field and pissed on the cheerleaders.

Yes, but the democratic party is still the nerd and all that you just described could be cooler than anything they ever did.

That won't matter in 2008. A year is an eternity in politics, and come election time it will be back to the old "who's going to protect us better?" mantra. Hillary will lose that debate every time, in part because she's a woman. And although Obama is amazing and rather non-threatening, he's still a distinguished black fellow in many people's eyes. People (*cough Cheebs*) expecting Obama to run and win in 08 and sadly misguided about this country. You don't hear any black people puttting Obama up as an 08 candidate; only white progressives, and I don't think they understand the monumental effect his candidacy would have.

I expect John Edwards to win the nomination in 2008 sir. It'll be a clean sweep for him with Mark Warner out of the picture.

John Edwards vs. Mitt Romney in 2008.

McCain is hated by conservatives and right wing conservatives vote in primaries, not a good situation for him and he is groveling to the christian right currently but it is seen to be obvious that he is doing it purely for votes and not out of his own beliefs which hurts his image a lot(I used to like the guy in 2000, the 2006 verison disgusts me). If he did win the primary it would be because conservatives think "I don't like this man, he isn't conservative enough but he is electable so I'll swallow my pride and vote for him. A bad republican is better than no republican I guess." Which will thus surpress 2008 general election turn out among Republicans due to their lack of excitement about their own candidate while Democrats(unless the nom is Hillary) will be hyped up to reclaim the white house making the once sure thing McCain, stumble and lose. Mitt Romney has a better shot at the general election than McCain then I think.

Remember elections are in the end about who can turn out their bases in the right states.  The last 6 years the GOP has been amazing in their conservative christian massive turnout. McCain isn't so hot with that group, even with his latest desperate attempts. He won't impire the conservative base. That is why if he is the nomiee democrats NEED someone "safe" like Edwards. Because while McCain can't inspire Republicans, Hillary would. Inspire them to come in massive ammounts to STOP her from winning.

McCain has taken massive blows yeah, but I refuse to count him out. He's not as dead as Frist for instance, who I thought would be the next president for sure before his problems came to light a couple years ago. He went from being able to attract the Christian right and conservatives to just attracting the Christian right, which won't be enough.

Edwards is going to need to pick a very good VP. Clark or even Kerry would be a good choice, and would give him more credibility with foreign policy; similar to what Cheney brought to the Bush ticket in 2000.

He won't do Kerry. Edwards seems to be resentful of Kerry feeling that Kerry vastly under-used him when running.

I think Bill Richardson would be a great VP nominee for Edwards. He is a governer from New Mexico who is VERY popular there. He also was the representive for the USA in the UN under Bill Clinton so he has a huge chunk of foreign policy credibility to add to the Edwards team. He is running for president but doesn't have much of a chance, most see him as someone who is running for VP.  He would secure the hispanic vote since he himself is hispanic and he would be the first major nominee who was hispanic. Hispanics don't have a one sided pure democrat voting habit like blacks and this could change that and bring out ever growing minority out to the polls. He wouldn't be a good president nominee but a VERY good VP.

I hate Obama if only for what he's turned my friends into.  All of a sudden they're really concerned with healthcare and other shit that doesn't affect them.  All they ever want to talk about are how Obama will lower gas prices, end all wars, end famine, end unhappiness and other delusional bullshit that they can't explain.  Their talking points come straight from The Onion or Jon Stewart and all they did last night was bash my girl Hil-dog and tell everybody that Obama only lost in WV because they're all racists.

Does anybody remember the last political candidate that had a following this sheep-like?  Ron Paul.

For the record I only support Hil-dog to piss off these morons.  If you have read up on the issues and want to vote for Obama then that's perfectly fine.  My friend tried to explain to me why he likes Obama and it went something like this, "Well.. like he wants to do healthcare and... Hillary's plan won't work.... oh yeah, his will though and... um... Hillary, umm corporations... uh yeah."  The point is that you really ought to be informed if you want to proselytize others.  And if you're an affluent white kid from Colorado then you shouldn't be able to vote because nothing any candidate will do will affect you until they're out of office.  Also, don't bother your pals with this shit while they're trying to do the co-op challenges in Brawl.

Edit: Needed some of these:  :punch :punch :punch :punch :punch :punch :punch :punch :punch :punch

It's a super awesome metajoke about how white people want to prove their lack of racism by supporting a black candidate but ultimately reveal their biases by demanding that the candidate explicitly decouples himself from the uncomfortable parts of black culture.

I don't think people got it the first time round either.  :(

PS Malek's post was how he wanted to vote for [a mix of several obscure ethnic/religious minorities]

That couldn't have been what I typed; I want to vote for a pure bread Norman who worships Thor.

I love when threads like these are bumped, so much ownage. Every talking about how a Black president will never be elected or that a certain nominee is guarenteed, ect. This election cycle has been especially awesome. Everyone was all "I wish Obama could be nominee but Hillary is guarenteed to win" or "I like McCain but Guiliani is going to be the nominee" and then

BAM! :punch

in a surprising upset, the candidates the majority of voters prefer actually won.   :american

McCain actually won thanks to the WTA Republican primaries.

If they used proportional allocation for delegates in all their states, McCain would have been tied with Romney after Super Tuesday and possibly still duking it out for the nomination.

Maybe. It definitely would have lasted longer. But even with a proportional system McCain would have still have gotten many more delegates than Romney due to his large margin of victory in most states (particularly the big ones). So McCain would have gotten a similar, if not greater lead, than Obama had over Hillary through February.

And either way it is still not Giuliani

If you're a partisan, you should prefer the Republican method (WTA)--choose someone quick and with the least amount of pain.
