Right the fuck on. Gladiator and Last Samurai are about dudes being fuck hardcore, just like 300. They just keep fuckin rockin faces. The samurai with the horns in Last Samurai was the most hardcore of them all. He got shot a bunch and they tried to help him and he's like FUCK OFF then just spits out a bunch of blood and walks off all awesome.

Maf, funny how you feel that way because the love story elements in Last Samurai was what I liked the least about it. Any hint of a romance between the love interest and Cruise was just wack and unbelievable because he killed her husband. Overall, I still liked the film but I wish they had cut out the lovey dovey stuff w/ the widow.

smooth: I think the point is that the society depicted in the movie was a dead society with values alien to the modern world so why the fuck not have a matter-of-fact approach to death in battle?

I mean id totally agree with you if there was buttfucking from day 1, but they spent half a year together if not more, and didnt really acknowledge their affection until right before the battle. Considering all details provided in the movie, its PLENTY believable.

Just cuz you'd get all butthurt if your man was killed in battle doesnt mean a japanese samurai wife would.

oh please. the last samurai was an amusing and entertaining spectacle. it was well-paced, pretty, and fun to watch. no-one's arguing that it get enrolled in the ichirou cinematic pantheon of critical greatness, but if you couldn't get a little over-the-top fun out of it, you were probably spending too much time clenching your sphincter in faux-indignance over the historical/cultural inaccuracies. it's a popcorn movie, and a good one at that. it's certainly no transformers!

its my favorite tom cruise movie, which is a short list. If you pretend the last samurai is really talking about ken watanabe's character its much more enjoyable since his performance in the movie is omg. I think, if you can look past the historical fairy tale, you can find something to enjoy. Plus the costumes are OMG

I mean its neat to be all lookie me I give a shit about history and the people, but deep down none of us do. Last Samurai excels at set piece battles, scenery, costumes, and you know what, it has some decent writing too.

Sneering at concepts can really keep you away from some decent movies.

I don't give a shit about historical inaccuracies, and I didn't even cite that as my reason for disliking the movie. The combo of Tom Cruise plus the typical "white man is immersed in foreign culture and comes to appreciate and respect it" formula make me metaphorically vomit.

Last Samurai was shit. That said, I will agree that it's better than Transformers.

It wasn't that Tom Cruise's character came to understand the culture in the movie, its that his character found a culture that made him understand himself as a warrior.

It has very little to do with Tom Cruise going to Japan, discovering sailor moon and maid bars, and deciding to join up.
