I just watched Eyes Wide Shut last night.  It was. . .nice.

Maybe I will type up some full impressions later, but to the point:  Tom Cruise is the weak link in the movie.  Like many Kubrick movies, the movie is not dialogue-based, really, and Tom Cruise fails as a physical actor.  He can't convey emotion physically without it seeming really hammy.  He nails like 2 scenes in the movie, and there are a lot more that needed a more nuanced actor.  In typical Cruise fashion, he still finds a ton of time to mug.  I was kind of surprised because I didn't recall him being a stand out in any negative (or positive) way the first time I watched the movie, back when it came out. 

His performance was actually jarringly bad.  He just didn't grok what he was in, or he was in way over his head.  Maybe both.  I am guessing he wanted to do an "artistic credibility" movie, and his agent got him in touch with the aging Kubrick.  This would also explain how both he and Nicole Kidman ended up in the movie.

I have to give it another watch, really.

I've been thinking about the movie all day.  It is the inferior Kubrick movie, though I still think it is better than FMJ.  That said, it's still a really damned good movie, and in some ways it's the ultimate Kubrick movie as far as being thought provoking and given to analysis.  It's really good.  It's distinctly Kubrick.  I am guessing he knew he didn't have a lot of time left, thus it not being the perfect jewels his other greats are.  Not enough time to polish it or punch up the script, and then of course there was the Tom Cruise thing.

But wow.  Also, for being the "darkest" overall Kubrick movie, dark and plodding, about revenge, lust, introspection, and the night, it is, I believe, the only one with an unambiguously positive ending.  Heh.  Bt it's still ironic, possibly even a little bit cynical.

I highly recommend checking it out.  Maybe I will give lengthier impressions later, but I really want to watch it again.

I'd pick it up on DVD.  I didn't like it that much but I'd give it another shot.

I remember going to see it in theaters on a double date with a friend and his girlfriend.  His girlfriend was the one who picked the movie so I initially thought "Wow, she picked a Kubrick film, she's a smart girl."  She fell asleep midway through the film and afterwards complained about how boring it was.  When I asked her why she picked that movie to see, she said "Because Tom Cruise is hot."
