Barry Lyndon appreciation thread
« on: December 03, 2007, 05:30:08 PM »
I wish it didn't end :(  It's not the thematic monster that other Kubrick movies are.  It's just a damned good period piece filled with a nice and busy picaresque story, creamy naturalistic visuals, and a rise and a fall.

I can't decide whether it is his best looking movie or not.  It's a very tough call between this and 2001.  I think Barry Lyndon wins because Kubrick was working with an existing palette, whereas in 2001, Kubrick had the luxury of completing and designing all the visuals and sets himself.  It's one thing to make a beautiful picture, but it's another to find and share beautiful pictures in reality in any sort of objective manner that many people can agree on.

And it's still got that Kubrickian cynicism:

Oh well :(

I'm gunna go buy some Coen brothers movies now.

most underappreciated kubrick movie ever.  this is right up there with 2001.  kubrick proved that zoom shots can work artistically with this film -- one of my film professors swore against zooms.  kubrick says fuck you!

THE FACT THAT THIS MOVIE DIDN'T GET A REMASTERED VERSION WITH EXTRAS IS A FUCKING SIN

I am guessing that it is a particularly difficult movie to remaster which is why there isn't even a DVD anamorphic transfer.  Moreso than most movies out there, getting the colors just right is absolutely imperative.  Maybe their POV is to see how the first batch of movies do and then see if there is enough interest to do the rest, which are all visual special cases.

Hm the youtube video looked sweet; beautiful shot. I originally thought this movie was like a James Bond movie set during the Revolutionary war due to the movie poster, but then someone told me it was a love story.

There is shooting involved apparently, and I like period pieces...I'll check this out

It's a picaresque.  It's about a roguish Irish nobody that falls into all sorts of unusual situation, all across Europe, during the Seven Years War.  There's a love story or two involved.

Well *I* heard that their rationale is that the lesser known Kubrick films like Lolita and Barry weren't getting that treatment because they aren't that popular to begin with.

Lolita is a popular movie, though.  I am guessing the reason Lolita wasn't picked was because it's in black and white.  Barry Lyndon was definitely written off because it's like his least popular movie and it'd be more effort than the rest.

If it was a popularity thing, we would have gotten Paths of Glory and 100% definitely Strangelove, which is easily one of his most popular.

Handel's Sarabande (keyboard suite Vol.2, No.4)  :heartbeat :heartbeat

That was the song that originally turned me on to classical music.

That song *is* badass, and it was what got me to acquire the soundtrack.  That said, I REALLY like the harpsichord song on the soundtrack.
