I wish it didn't end

It's not the thematic monster that other Kubrick movies are. It's just a damned good period piece filled with a nice and busy picaresque story, creamy naturalistic visuals, and a rise and a fall.
I can't decide whether it is his best looking movie or not. It's a very tough call between this and 2001. I think Barry Lyndon wins because Kubrick was working with an existing palette, whereas in 2001, Kubrick had the luxury of completing and designing all the visuals and sets himself. It's one thing to make a beautiful picture, but it's another to find and share beautiful pictures in reality in any sort of objective manner that many people can agree on.
And it's still got that Kubrickian cynicism:

I'm gunna go buy some Coen brothers movies now.
