When I was little...
« on: December 05, 2007, 01:34:11 AM »
...my father was famous. He was the greatest Samurai in the empire, and he was the Shogun's decapitator. He cut off the heads of 131 lords, for the Shogun. It was a bad time for the empire. The Shogun just stayed inside his castle and he never came out. People said his brain was infected by devils, and that he is rotting with evil. The Shogun said the people were not loyal. He said he had a lot of enemies, but he killed more people than that. It was a bad time. Everybody living in fear, but still we were happy. My father would come home to mother, and when he had see her, he would forget about the killings. He wasn't scared of the Shogun, but the Shogun was scared of him. Maybe that was the problem. That night, mother would sing for us, while father would go into his temple and pray for peace. He had prayed for things to get better. Then, one night the Shogun sent his ninja spies to our house. They were supposed to kill my father, but they didn't. That was the night everything changed, forever.

I just listened to Liquid Swords for the first time last night, and it has a lot of vocal samples from the movie. I've never been into kung fu type flicks but I really want to check this out.

The Wu Tang quotes from the movie "The Killer" are fucking awesome, I think from "only built 4 cuban lynx".  The movie itself is fuck awesome.

in the rank of my favorite wu tang albums it's my #2.  the production is strong and genius is probably the most lyrical out of all the wu tang members.  imo, it's well balanced.  it's not like rza's beats are stealing the show -- which is kind of the case in cuban linx.  genius/gza definitely holds his own on each track. lots of great wordplay with substance thrown in on occasion.  my favorite tracks in no specific order are shadowboxin, BIBLE, cold world, and duel of the iron mic (:bow odb's hook).  damnit, even 4th chamber is a sick track.  in fact, the entire album is fucking solid and one of my all time favorites.

#1 - 36 chambers
#2 - liquid swords
#3 - built 4 cuban linx

Yea I'm digging the album. GZA is probably my favorite Wu rapper outside of Ghostface (who's new album is awesome btw).

RZA's beats on Liquid Swords remind me of the ones on 36 Chambers. Lots of piano loops, subdued sounds, grimey shit. That's his style, or was his style heh. It's not overproduced, allowing the rapper to really shine if he's on point. But the beats here are far more menacing than those on 36 Chambers; Living in the World Today's bass line is just chilling. And yeah, GZA's lyrics/flow are great; Labels is a great example of his inventive style.

i agree, and i guess thats why i like the album so much.  i'm into dark, grimey beats.  if you haven't, peep out the gravediggaz album some time.  now that's some DARK shit.  another less known "wu family" albums is the first killarmy and sunz of man joints.  definitely worth a listen if you crave that classic wu sound.
