So here's the deal with GL.  It's basically split into two parts.  The first part is far more creative and entertaining than the second part; the characters are more likable and everything is a little more lighthearted.  Then something MAJOR happens

and in my opinion, the show never recovers from this.  It's weird; I haven't even SEEN a lot of the second half of the show; I'd just download it every week and skim through it.  It was like all that was happening were the robots just getting bigger and bigger AND BIGGER.  It just sort of lost direction.  But I still think it's a cool series and it's worth checking out.

It was MASSIVELY, MASSIVELY overhyped on the GAF.  Just a warning.

GL is not the next "big" anime.  It ended a couple of months ago and that was pretty much it.  I see that the DS game that came out at the end of October came with an OVA DVD...wonder why that wasn't ripped?

After it ended, I didn't see any discussion of it.  And there's very, very little merchandise available in Japan.  I found a couple of Gurren Lagann model kits and some toys based on the mechs, and that was it.  Saw them in a discount bin a while back.

What type of discussion do you want? It didn't have a deep plot or anything, it was just fun as hell to watch. Yeah the 2nd half was much weaker at first, but the last few episodes were just as great as the first half of the show.

GL is not the next "big" anime.  It ended a couple of months ago and that was pretty much it.

It's better than most anime that came out in the past few years.

Fun fact: I have never seen this happen.  Ever.  Instead they just smack each and sit on each others' laps.   Yes, the boys too.  

Tuesday I was coming down the stairs after a lesson.  This is running down the hall from the right side after his friend, stops, and kicks his shoe off at him.  Guess who it hit?  The shoe smacks me in the left temple, bending my glasses and fucking up the frames.  I kept my calm, smiled, walked up to him, and said "let's go," puting my arm around him, starting to walk to the teachers' room.  He sees where we're going and tries to get away, so I grab him by the collar and drag him into the room, explaining what happened.  Fortunuately there was a guy there giving out fliers to Megane Super, and he offered to look at the frames.  He got them bent back into shape, but they still weren't right.  So yesterday I had to go the shop I bought them at they fixed them for me.  The kid at least was smart enough to come back later that day and aplogize to me a second time.

I loved Royal Space Force, I loved Otaku no Video, I loved Evangelion, I loved His and Her Circumstances, I loved FLCL, but I just wasn't feelin' Gurren Lagann. I might give it another shot when ADV releases it on DVD in February.

Exactly what it looks like.  Miniature torso/hips with various types of underwear.  These are toys.  I'm telling you, it's so fucked up here sometimesall the time.  Outside the manga shop, they have these little vending machines with random trading figures inside.  That's pretty typical...they're everywhere.  BUT they also have some machines off to the side with hentai toys and shit.  Like little nude loli figurines and plastic renditions of girls getting penetrated in different ways.

And people wonder why there's such a problem with rapes and train gropers in this country?  That shit starts at a young age.

Gurren Lagann sux.

I just finished episode 17. 1-15 are the first arc, 16 is a clip show, 17 starts arc 2.

Even putting aside how stupidly shark-jumping the second arc is...the show is just boring. It has no plot, it has no themes, it has no secrets or mysteries. It just has robots punching other robots. The robots get bigger...and bigger...and bigger...and bigger. If you judge the quality of a show by the surface area of its robots then you will probably love it. But the show pretty much bored me to tears. I kept waiting for it to get good and it never did.

WHY is this show so hyped? It has no content, WAY too much fanservice (an onsen episode AND a beach episode in the first 16? and this in a supposedly post-apocalyptic future?)

Kamina was the anchor holding the show together. As long as he was around, the show was cliched but at least somewhat enjoyable. Once he got taken out of the picture; the show basically ended. Replacing him with pedo-bait Nia just further kicked the show in the wrong direction. And the second arc time-jump is just ridiculous and lame. Who were the other members of the Dai Gurren-dan, anyhow? Did they even have names? What was wrong with this show.

I dunno. The mechs are really, really, REALLY big, if that's your thing. But if you like actual quality anime (Satoshi Kon, Ghibli, Bebpo, Lain, FLCL, etc.) then it's not worth your time.
