i've never read the flashman books, but they seem right up my alley.

should i start with the first one or am i free to just skip around?

They're all pretty self-contained.  References to other adventures, but nothing that requires having read the other books, or that would spoil them.  Flash For Freedom was my introduction to the series.

Reading them in order of publication (which is a bit different from when they're set) is as good as any, though.  I don't think the last few were quite as good, but I might have just overloaded myself on the formula by then.
