Did nyone else like the Turok demo somewhat?
« on: January 30, 2008, 02:47:25 AM »
Thought the gunplay was good, and so were the dinos.  It isn't something I'd buy but it was kinda sorta polished.

Mind you I played the version with textures, maybe that makes a difference.

I think the problem with a game like Turok is that they just didn't aim high enough.  They wanted to make a next gen turok game, but that is all it is.  A turok game made with the next gen sheen.  It could easily be a game from any other 3d generation if you scaled back the tech.

It is like Halo 3, without the 4 player Campaign online coop, or multiplayer options.  Blah....

Well I am glad you posted.

It, unlike that Red Dawn ripoff game, actually had good gunplay and AI.

What say you?

I thought it comes out Feb 5th? What's the deal?

Anyway, my friend downloaded the demo on my 360 today. I watched him play, and it seemed decent enough. The only real problem is that the knife is fucking overpowered and not much fun to use.

hold on, how can you resolve the fact that Eidos/Gamespot etc were banned in protest, yet Aclaims Turok looks to be pulling the same deal with Gamespot?

I understand GAF banned certain words and games, and i appreciate Bish worked on the game but man...

this just shows what a farce the original reaction was to the K+L situation.

What's to say the same pressure is now being exerted on Gamespot employees?

Let's wait until we see what score it gets before we judge.

I don't think it'll be less than a 7.0 game.  The gameplay is actually pretty fun.  The cave part was a few minutes of tutorial basically, don't get why you guys bitched so much about it.  The cave also wasn't nearly as dark on my TV, are you guys PSing those pics?

For the gunplay, it seemed pretty solid.  The guns were satisfying and each of them were pretty unique.  I also loved the knife and bow options.  The knife is contextual but it's something you can only use if you sneak up on an enemy or get really close to a dino.  Overall, it doesn't look like the final game will just rehash the same exact scenario over and over again like a lot of other shooters.  The graphics were great.  Especially the jungle area.  It wasn't Crysis but it was pretty.

I really don't get any of the criticism for the game.  It's probably at least a solid rental.  I understand that bish did something on the game but you guys are just making up shit to jump on for this game I think.

I'm just trolling, I haven't actually played it so I don't have a real opinion. However, what I've seen of it looks kind of generic and unexciting. Taking a bald space marine FPS and throwing dinosaurs in it might be enough if we weren't drowning in a sea of quality FPS titles right now from last Fall (Unreal Tournament III, Orange Box, Crysis, Bioshock, Call of Duty 4, Quake Wars, Halo 3, etc.). Turok just looks like a 2nd tier FPS, on par with maybe a Call of Juarez or a Timeshift.

I haven't played Timshift but CoJ was a very good game.  Probably one of the best stories of last year and the atmosphere was just really well done.  Anybody should give it a spin if they like FPS' because of how unique it was.

Timeshift seemed decent but it was essentially F.E.A.R. on steroids.

Turok is probably an above average game (second tier like you said) but it gets a hell of a lot of hate.  for some problems that don't actually exist.

i like it so far.

ITs much better than the demo.

Whats going to make or break this game is level design - the AI is competent, the scripting is decent...they manage to make just another Unreal game not look so bad with good lighting and very detailed environments....

The game doesnt get an A+ for polish or anything and has the same technical issues all other UE3 games have....

So this >planet< better end up being interesting. Im not that far in, and in not gonna finish it now im playing other stuff....

spoiler (click to show/hide)
but im gonna tackle this first base and it better not suck
[close]

PS3 version has decently implemented rumble.

looking at my 40 Inch gaming display around 30 feet away my girlfriend shouted "lost is still on?..." - heh

So the game looks prettier than it did in the demo.

I love these FPS games with QTE CQC battles when the enemy gets up close...its very cinematic.

AI is better than the demo? What difficulty are you on?

The QTEs suck, the knife is overpowered and he does the same thing every time for dinos (6 or 7 animations for humans). Take too long too.

The second setting - so not normal....

An enemy will stop shooting at me to prioritize shooting a raptor in the face about to gnaw on him.

And the QTE's and knife kills vary depending on a few different factors.

The knife stealth kills are fun - but need more blood...

Do the dinos run up to you and then just stand around or walk in circles so you can kill them?

Would you say the demo was on the final game's easiest difficulty setting

Would you say the demo was on the final game's easiest difficulty setting

The demo is a completely different setting/map/etc from the real game it seems. I cant rate the difficulty.

Plus this game is mostly about traveling to the target planet, and killing the enemy soldiers - the dino's are more just in the way and attack both you and the enemy. I have killed more enemies than dino's.

So having said that the game seems like you are meant to play it fast and crazy unreal style.....the cover system isn't much but it doesn't seem like covering helps - its kind of like playng something like Uncharted except instead of a skinny dark haired guy who takes cover and shoots - you are Turok, wear gears of war style future/space body armor and you are supposed to relentlessly charge thru yer foes with your hands or guns or whatever. You machine gun is more of a way to combo an enemy in the face at close range.

The area in the demo wasnt nearly as varied, complex or good looking as the first areas in the real game.....in the demo I was in a tight cave and raptors often popped out nocking me on my feet a few times in a row....this kind of stuff hasnt even happened in the real game as yer mostly in a jungle fighting in larger areas.

I like the variety in the enemies - it is satisfying to take down the dinosaurs, and 3-4 soldiers in a row without breaking a sweat.

The knife isnt "too powerful" yer just turok and if you sneak up behind a guard and stab a 5 inch wide blade thru his throat he is gonna die right? What do you mean? (did I mention the soldiers fly to this planet on a spaceship?)

The QTE's dont kill an enemy they just give you a chance to counter and then resume attack on any target once you have pushed away....yes you can kill the smaller lizards by snapping them over your knee or twisting them but they are like glorified iguanas at best. A raptor can take 5-6 stabs in an eye socket and then a clip or two to take down.

The game feels really engaging fighting the wild beasts.

Like i said - this quick thrill isnt worth much - the real win/lose on this title will be the endgame etc....how good can the stages be - can the action get more intense with complicated stage morphing events and scenairos as hinted at and used lightly in the first few areas?

I love how your other ally soldiers who all hate you and your dumb turok hawk all talk shyt and then die one by one in front of your face.

Its so "God of War" to me.

Bow rox for sure.

In the demo if you simply hit R with the knife when that little icon came up it would be an instant kill, even if you were staring a guy face to face or a dinosaur was rushing at you. It was stupidly easy to hit the button in time.

They were trying to do the Gears chainsaw,  but it's like you could use the chainsaw simply by tapping B once while in a full run.

yeah you can only do the one hit knife kills if you stealth on the enemy.

I also love approaching a group of enemies fighting dinosaurs and watching the fun from a distance.....

Someone should ask Bishop why his team is so incompetant at coding for the PS3.

From the 1up review:

The occasionally glitchy visuals also add to the feeling of not-quite-doneness. While the 360 version is fairly solid in this area, the PS3 version suffers from some serious problems, from the texture pop-in that's becoming common in Unreal Engine-based games to occasional moments where the environment simply disappears -- and this is punctuated by lots and lots of pretty terrible screen tearing. That's a shame, because the jungle environments are convincingly lush, and that kind of visual problem proves terribly distracting. What's worse, though, is that the interior environments are seriously bland (across both platforms). Sure, that makes the jungle feel that much more lifelike, but it also makes it far too easy to get turned around in one of the many interior areas.

I love how when he banned me he was lecturing everyone on how demo versions of games diverge from the process and do not get the extra TLC that the final game will, and now that the game is out he's saying the only difference between PS3 demo and final is "the frame rate is a bit better."

Thanks for proving me right, asshole. And ban that dude saying the new Tomb Raider looks like a PS2 game.

Unfortunately, I'm kind of liking my demo replay. I'll try to buy it used if I get it.

I think his response would be...

Too many good people have put too much hard work into this game to allow that kind of trolling to skate!! *ban*

He'd probably forget to mention anything having to do with wheat, chaff, or "no excuses."
