"Gil Thorp" readers: Have you noticed a new character named Andrew Gregory?Guess what? He's the namesake of the guitar-playing, songwriting Andrew Gregory of Radford. Our Gregory has been a fan of the strip for at least five years."My brothers and I discovered that it was the funniest strip in the paper, whether it meant to be or not," Gregory, 25, said by phone last week from Williamsburg, N.Y., where he now lives and performs when he's not touring solo or with his band, the Gregory Brothers. He struck up an e-mail acquaintance with the strip's latest author, Neal Rubin. About 1 a.m. Dec. 27, Rubin sent Gregory an e-mail, telling him to be sure to look at the comic that morning. A new character had appeared: Maureen Monte's "conceited ex-boyfriend, Andrew Gregory.""It was a young boy's dream come true!" Gregory said, laughing.According to the Maureen character, "Andrew Gregory is the most obnoxious kid at Milford!" But according to his basketball coaches, "Andrew Gregory might be the best offensive threat we have."Rubin, who is also a features columnist for the Detroit News, said by e-mail that he has to come up with new characters every year, and he names some of them after fans."Sometimes I make them up, sometimes I use a character's name to tip a hat to a friend, and often -- Anne Mayer and Maureen Monte in the basketball storyline are current examples -- I'll name them for high bidders at charity auctions," Rubin wrote."I don't know Andrew, but he has e-mailed me often enough about 'Gil Thorp' that I knew he was a major fan, and I knew he'd get a kick out of being a Milford High School basketball star. Also, I figured he had enough of a sense of humor that he'd enjoy the less appealing parts of the fictional Andrew Gregory's personality."And thus began the drama. But it's early yet -- the real person feels that things will change for his comic strip alter ego."I know Thorp well-enough to know that if he's this cocky at the beginning of the season, he'll learn some lessons later on," Gregory said.Apparently, the comedown is already under way. After a ball-hogging, shot-happy performance, comic-strip Andrew got a real talking-to from coach."As for WHY the Milford Andrew is that way," Rubin wrote, "keep reading."
