it's funny that Halo 3 was so bad that we're already seeing such severe backpedalling just a few months later. Normally, it takes 3-5 years to see this sort of critical reassessment. But with Halo 3, it's suddenly it's all "yeah...uh...so I guess that was fun back in August...well, the coop was at least...well we gave it a 9.5 so we have to put it SOMEWHERE on the top 10...geez, what were we thinking."

youre right Rman, and Halo fans reached Ninfag levels of rabid devotion to their brand, I think reviewers rated Halo 3 very highly the same reason why 1st party Ninty shit gets the 9.5s: fear of fanboy backlash, letterbombs etc.

I do think Halo 3 critically amongst forumers did suffer as part of the X360's success - X360 fans aren't in the position where they have to champion each game because of the number of titles out there. So if something isn't AAA+++ then the clear and fair appraisals tend to come much quicker.

I've still got people going on about Uncharted to me despite the fact that i've finished it and generally enjoyed it. It's weird - thinking it's good isn't enough, you either think it is "AAA+++ GOTY GOTC!" or you are a stinking fanboy hatorz.

mass effect is two-thirds shit! its sidequests don't even meet the abysmally low standards of rpg sidequesting! its allegedly gripping narrative wouldn't do for a star trek episode -- not that i expect much more from videogames, but if we're going to hate on uncharted for its embarrassing (but successfully colloquial) sex chatter, surely we can spare some hate for mass effect's mortifying courtships capped with that physically painful 'by the gods, shepard' line, in comparison to which halo 3 is shakespeare

I fuck-wholeheartedly agree with you about the side missions. What a fucking chore that was. I did every last one I could find, and then I did Noveria, Virmire, and the end of the game all in a row. If the DLC is little more than SIDEMISSIONS, than I ain't gonna buy it.

Ehhh, only games I've played and/or really care about on this list are Orange Box, Mario Galaxy, and Halo 3... Galaxy being the best of the bunch. I also liked Etrian Odyssey, Blue Dragon, Contra IV, Kororinpa and (so far) Eternal Sonata out of all the big 07 releases.

If you truly believe Microsoft's 2008 lineup is good, I'd love to hear why.  What I see is so niche, and so narrowed in it's focus, that it's not even up for discussion that Sony's first party lineup is gonna dominate Microsoft's.

Of course, I'm not talking about sales figures and the like, but purely as a gamer.
