Dante and Nero are not "the same."  Especially after the different styles they gave him in DMC3.  But Nero has gotten some new basic attacks like the grab, where as before Dante just had the powered-up devil trigger.

I started DMC4 friday night and I don't see what there is to really bitch about after the beginning of it and having played the demo before.  The game reminds me more of DMC1 than DMC3, which I prefer.  It doesn't seem like the focus is on combos anymore.  There are two difficulty levels to start with (human and devil hunter), and an optional tutorial mode toggle.  The cut scenes are great and Nero is just as much of an arrogant jerk as Dante is, so no complaints there.

It is disappointing to read that you can't play as Dante the whole game.  I figured when you beat DMC4 you got that option.  I wouldn't susprise me if this game ends up much easier than DMC3 was (which I barely touched; still need to play it!) due to all the complaints about the previous title's difficulty.  Most folks found it to be too much.  The hardcore will unfortunately suffer for this.

Nero has the same weapons and the same moves most of the according to bebpo! That's boring!

If they have the same moves then who gives a fuck which lanky white haired dude you're playing as.

edit: nm, but still

I'm not saying they have the same weapons and moves. I'm saying that Nero stays STATIC most of the game and you can't upgrade him with new moves, which is BORING and one of the biggest parts of DMC's formula!

I just bought it. drohne is too scary for me to post anything else tho  :lol

i'm just messing around in here, and anyway i'm not that confident that dmc4 will be as good as dmc3. i'd like to hear what you think

Well, i realize this series has a lot of long-term, hardcore fans so I don't want any casual observations from a Ninja Gaiden fanboy like me to diminish people's expectations unduly. I hate the way GAF hangs on bebpo's flip-flopping. GREAT SUCCESS! OH NO IT AM ACTUALLY MASSIVE FAIL!

With that said, I'm enjoying it a lot so far. I liked DMC1 and 3 as well, though i didn't finish either for various reasons. Nero seems fairly similar to Dante in the early going (lvl 4 now) but I doubt it will stay that way for long. I've barely unlocked any special moves yet, despite finding THOUSANDS of orbs...gah. I went for 'Devil Hunter' difficulty but it's really pretty simple so far. I use about 3 or 4 moves in combination and it's easy to clear a room without getting hit. The bosses are more challenging...but I knew how to beat Berial from the demo so not so bad. As Groo says, there's a lot of tedious last-gen stuff to contend with...non-seamless levels being the most annoying. You can change your controller set-up but if you do, all the on-screen combo tips still display the defaults...jesus people, how hard is a text string search and replace?? And i just did a secret mission that i had no hope of completing since it relies on a special move i haven't unlocked yet! grrr. Timed mission scoring is very irritating when you have puzzles to complete. even simple ones...Also, platforming with a fixed camera is distinguished mentally-challenged. Half the time you can't even see where you're supposed to go with the Devil Bringer jumps. It's a literal leap of faith a lot of the time, and if you miss a jump, you can end up having to re-clear a room full of enemies before you get another try at it. Lots of little niggles like that. Anyway, the actual combat is a blast and makes up for all of that and more.

Just got to the frog boss on lvl. 4. Taking a quick break since I'm finding hand cramp to be a problem since you have to be attacking constantly due to the lack of any sort of guard/block button (at least so far).

I agree with Dronhe.  This is a must play game for this month.  I'm not too much into the crazy combo stuff from the last game, so the Nero and Dante stuff doesn't affect whatsoever.

Did another level, with no boss. Yup, there's lots of backtracking. It's a bit aimless to be honest...in theory, i'm supposed to be chasing Dante but he hasn't been seen for ages so i'm really just looking for open doors and buttons to press at this stage. Would be nice to have some kind of objective other than being a rat in a maze. Oh well. Combat remains fun as hell. Still haven't found a use for the rev thing on the sword other than with bosses (when they go down for a bit). Hard to tell if it's really doing more damage or whether i would be better off just slashing away though. And the guns remain useless as anything other than a means to keep the counter going. of course, i am basically a DMC noob.

True, but both of these are upgrades I don't have yet. The gun is so shitty i'm not yet convinced it's worth upgrading. If i was better at the game i'd be unlocking more of these upgrades but there you have it.

I think you should. It'll take dozens of hours of unlocking moves & harder difficulty levels and trying new combos before it really becomes clear whether this is a 'hardcore' game or not. And even if it turns out that it isn't (which I stress, is far beyond my capacity to judge), it's still as much fun as any other button-mashing actioner out there. Looks great too! Sho Nuff was clearly high when he said Dead Rising looks better than this.

so i found out you play as dante for only 5 missions

this is awful news

glad i'm not buying it on day one. no dante full game no sale. sorry capcom.
you should have already known that!  You're simply trying to find excuses NOT to buy it and to be a dirty poor.  Go justify your piracy or something.  Because you failed at this

No. In DMC2 you got to play as Dante OR what's her face and you had  FULL GAME. In DMC4 you only play as Dante for 5 MISSIONS. That is UNCALLED for.

Yeah but in DMC 2 you could be bosses like this:

http://www.stage6.com/user/pancakesandsex/video/1951414/Devil-May-Cry-2-LOL

i didnt even have to move.  So uh....yeah, lets not use that as an example ever again

Given that there's a 'Character Select' option at the start of each mission, I'm PRESUMING that you can play on any level as Dante on your 2nd playthrough. I'm only on Mission 6 so take that with the proverbial grain of salt.

you can unlock super nero and super dante later on which have infinite devil trigger. the character selection is so you can choose between the regular and super version of each character, but you can't pick the other. each character can only be chosen for its missions.
