the acting, the writing, the camera work, the recreation of romania in the late 80s, the true to life character decisions, the intense drama, the lack of soundtrack, the empty streets, the rusted out beds in the dorms, the constant petty corruption, the classism inherent in dynamics between different groups of people, the pragmatic discussion of what to do with an aborted fetus to avoid detection, petty paranoia, the boneheaded decisions and lies which come from fear or ego, the final haunting look in the actresses eyes

i try to avoid hyperbole when discussing film (because it's so easy to dissolve into it when you can't adequately articulate your views) but it's very difficult to not say "this is the best movie i've seen since october."
the performances and writing are pitch perfect. the mis en scene and montage are pitch perfect. it's just...it's just amazing to behold.
