the Mario Sunshine hate baffles me to this day.  It was one of the very few top-tier platform games to come out last gen, heck, maybe even the best one.  There were a lot of GCN games that could be safely considered a wash, Mario Sunshine I wouldn't place in that category.
it was fine on it's own but trash when compared to 64.

Rare sucks. They've only made one good game and that's Viva Pinata.

N64 had Mario 64, OoT, Majora's Mask, Sin and Punishment, and...Mischief Makers. lol Wargods

GC had Mario Sunshine, Wind Waker, Metroid Prime, F-zero GX, and a slew of Dreamcast ports

Mario Sunshine > Mario 64
Wind Waker > OoT
Majora's Mask + OoT> Wind Waker

Yeah, I definitely preferred the GC to N64... GC at least had some good RPGs and 3rd party offerings, even if its first party stuff wasn't quite up to snuff. N64 was a third party wasteland, and the best N64 game never came to the states until the VC.

Goldeneye wasn't that great back then (especially since I played a number PC FPSes before), I could imagine it being nigh unplayable today.

I still reckon the worst console I own is Xbox 1.
WHAT THE FUCK WAS THE OTHER CONSOLE YOU OWNED, A SEGA PICO?

I own nearly all of the famous consoles (apart from SEGA CD and PS3), I just didn't really find much to like on Xbox 1 outside of the SEGA games, Halo series, the online-enabled 2D fighters, and a couple of the superior multiplatform titles. I didn't like any of the Xbox 1 RPGs either :(

ahhh its another one of these N64 vs GC threads

how anyone can argue that N64 beats GC is totally beyond me

Gamecube has some awesome games on it

RE4, Killer 7, Pikmin, REmake, F-Zero GX, Wind Waker, Metroid Prime, Baten Kaitos, BATEN KAITOS ORIGINS, Paper Mario 2

all fucking fantastic

N64 has... F-Zero X, Mischief Makers, Conker..... ummmm.... uhhhhh.... Buck Bumble

GC>>>>>>N64

I think the GC was stronger due to capcom goodness.  I had fun times with local multiplayer on the n64, though.

If I had to go back right now and replay the games on the N64 vs the Gamecube, I'd probably side with the GC 'cause the games were definitely more polished and there's a lot more of 'em BUT if I based my decision purely off of nostalgia I'd say the N64 was the better system 'cause I just had a shit ton of fun with that thing.  I was genuinely excited everytime I bought a new game for it...or at least for the first couple of years and seriously, those nights in the dorm drinking beer after beer with all my friends while playing Goldeneye is probably some of the best times I've ever had playing videogames.  I hardly ever touched my GC.

The difference is that Mario used to be - without question - the best in platorming.  Sonic kids muddy that up a little bit, but they're full of shit.

Mario64 was the undisputed king of 32/64 bit platforming.  All SMS could muster was becoming "arguably" the best platformer of last gen.

Mario 64 isn't the best platformer of 32/64 bit gaming. Klonoa is better, Abe's Odyssee is better, Rayman 1 and 2 are better. Mario 64 is overrated garbage.

The nostalgia argument only works when the system you're arguing against DOESN'T have better games than the one you're supporting.

What level variety? GO GET THIS COIN! Level is so small it will take 2-3 minutes to complete. Rinse repeat.

Sunshine has brushing a giant eel's teeth, and amputating a giant squid. 64's level variety sucks. You essentially do the same thing every level and the level designs suck balls aside from like the last 3-4 levels (clock level, giant mountain level, flying carpet level)

mario 64 ruined platformers forever. go get this, go get that zzz

I don't understand why nintendo fans always bring this excuse up. Every single mario ever has the sand level, the ice level, the water level, the fire level, the sky level. What is wrong with variety? Oh wait, nintendo fans want the same game over and over.

Yes, but I didn't understand.

It sounds like you're implying that Sunshine had a variety of levels, but then you're criticizing for wanting the same thing over and over...which is what it seems like you implied Sunshine was doing. *boggle*

N64 > GC :D
AIDYN CHRONICLES: THE FIRST MAGE > TALES OF SYMPHONIA ANIMU GARBAGE
SM64 > SMS
OCARINA > WIND WAKER
NO METROID > METROID PRIME
Windwaker was far funner (not as "innovative" though) than OoT.  I played OoT after finishing windwaker and while it's still playable, it's nowhere near as well designed.  And Metroid Prime is my favorite game ever so I'll leave it at that.
GC was worse than N64 though.

VP is good but it's not the only good rare game.
DK1+2+ maybe 3 lol, banjo 1 (didn't like 2 much), conker, jet force gemini, PD, goldeneye, kameo and whatever i missed.
DK was apparently just a tech demo.  miyamoto actually said it proved that western gamers were willing to play a mediocre collectathon if it looked pretty.  I loved it back when I played it but I'm sure I'd hate it today.

He was only talking about DK country though.  That wasn't nearly as popular as miyamoto's original barrel jumping or whatever game.  It's easy to understand why he was upset that the main thing being hyped about a sequel/spinoff of his game was it's graphics.

Yeah, it was one of the few instances where I've heard about Miyamoto being pissed off at anyone. It makes it worse considering it was from an ally too. :lol

it had variety in the things you do in the levels; gameplay variety. However, the levels all shared a common thing. You misunderstood me, when I said variety, I mean what's wrong with having a mario that isnt' the same formula we've had for the past 2 decades

The problem with that is that what Sunshine did differently wasn't exactly a breath of fresh air. It took an environment that we've seen in one form or another in Mario games, and platformers in general, and just focused on that. So you have one continuously repetitive gimmick instead of a bunch of them.

I loved Rare's 3D platformers (except DK64), but the Donkey Kong Country series is absolute shit. They've aged horribly, and I can't imagine getting any enjoyment out of them without the influence of nostalgia. I bought DKC2 on VC the other day, and I couldn't believe that I actually liked the game back in the day.

the n64 is trash. none of its games are playable in this day and age 'cept maybe ogre battle 64. at least the ps2 had a good smattering of 2d and 2d/3d hybrid games to preserve a little of its legacy. the gamecube shouldn't even acknowledge the n64 -- the n64 is possibly lower than the 3do on the ol' "has games playable in 2007" scale.

Judged based on the time the games were released, the N64 had better games than the GameCube. However 99% of the N64’s library is totally unplayable today. Even a game like Goldeneye, which I loved ten years ago, is unplayable.

I think Goldeneye's important contributions to gaming are the great animation (for the time--no idea how it holds up today), it being one of the first games to introduce a fun skeletal damage model, and implementing fun mission objectives, which still wasn't very common at the time.  Outside of Facility in SP, the only levels I can recall are MP, making me think that level design wasn't better or worse than other FPSes at the time.

Even if it did run at 30fps that'd be a massive improvement over the original.
