Is there any possibility of DMC4 being cancelled for the PC?
« on: February 24, 2008, 08:08:15 PM »
A few more tries with the PS3 demo make me want to play the damn game right now.  I've been playing LO lately but the game seems too long for me right now.  My original plan was to play DMC4 in "Greater than 1080P" (TVC15)  on my PC but there haven't been any news about the PC version in months.  Should I wait or just get it for the PS3 or 360 right now?

Capcom has been completely quiet about the PC version.  I'm wondering if they're afraid of consoles sales being cannablized by PC & 360/PS3 gamers who can just pirate the PC ver. instead of buying it for the console.   The sad thing is that some non-pirating gamers like me might not be willing to wait and just go for the console versions, which'll once again make the PC sales look bad.  If I buy it for the 360 or PS3, there's almost no chance that I'll double dip for the PC version.

Smooth, Capcom is first and foremost a console developer.  Just buy one of the console versions.

Lost Planet wasn't my cup of tea but it looked awesome on a PC.  I was hoping that DMC4 would be the same since it's using the same engine.  Also, I've to be careful which version I'm playing first since the game seems to be designed for multiple playthroughs.  Once I start on a console version, I doubt I"ll play it again on a PC since I would lose all my powerups.

DMC4 isn't pushing the best visuals in the world, it isn't like LP.

you will be fine with the console versions.

I agree with you there.  Capcom did put a lot of work to the PC version of Lost Planet.
RE4 not so much.  But, then again that port was probably handled by a different developer.

Based on my experience with Lost Planet, you could achieve a perfect 60 fps at reasonable resolutions (anything around 720p level).  When you jumped up into 1080p territory, however, most PCs really couldn't hold a constant 60 fps.  Perhaps DMC4 will be more optimized (as it is was designed for 60 fps on consoles), but you might be taking a risk here for nothing.  It's possible that your PC won't deliver a solid 60 fps at 1080p+ resolutions.  If you had to drop it down to 720p levels, you may as well have purchased the PS3 version in the first place.

It's really kind of a wait and see.  This is one instance where I don't think waiting for a PC version makes a lot of sense as the console versions already run at 60 fps and look fantastic.  The PC version could be superior, but it probably won't be by a large margin.

My PC is teh awesome 'cause I have two 8800 GTX.  If I have to drop down to 720p for any PC game, it's probably such a shitty port that there's little point in playing it.  LP easily ran at 60fps on my PC.  At least on the 1st two levels.  I kinda stop playing after that.  I don't recall if I used 2x or 4x AA though.

Drohne brought up a good point that makes me think that I should wait for the PC version.  He says that the 360 version looks better but its joypad's shoulder layout is a bit of hindrance for advanced play.   With the PC version, I can get better graphics while also using a dual-shock 2 controller.  But maybe I should just get the 360 version since I don't get all crazy about being a DMC expert.

The 360 version does NOT look better.  He doesn't like the blur filter they use during camera motion, but that's just like the previous DMC titles.  The 360 version actually has more slowing and tearing (PS3 version has NO tearing and less slowdown).

Drohne says it's not a blur filter.  He thought so initially too but it's actually some kinda weird temporal AA that makes jaggies less noticeable but also makes everything more blurry.

I thought framerates are practically the same though.  I didn't even know there are slowdowns in either version.  How bad are they?

The PC version will probably come out in a couple of months to not too much fanfare like other Capcom PC games. I'll probably check it out then since I can use a Dual Shock 2, which is what I used to play DMC/DMC3 on my PS2. It's more a matter of "hey this is where I play games, on my PC" rather than getting it for the 360, which only exists to play games I can't play on my PC.
