Wow, this one sounds even better than the last solo album ALREADY. The fucked up thing is the fact that the first Jenny Lewis solo album was soooooo good.

Overall I didn't really like Under the Blacklight, but it had some decent songs, like "Silver Lining," "Breakin' Up," "Under the Blacklight," and "the Angels Hung Around."

Haha,  I went to a club once that was seemed to be set up for Japanese girls to meet up with black guys.  I was the only white guy in there most of the night.  There were dudes in full-on pimp suits walking around.  I was fascinated by this.  Everyone was pretty friendly...the bartender was like "you single?  well, we gonna get you laid tonight!"   :lol

spoiler (click to show/hide)
I didn't get laid that night  :'(  But I did meet my now-wife soon after so it's okay!

You know who was really scary?  Some of the Japanese girls there, HOLY SHIT.

It seems that many of the songs on Acid Tongue were written a while ago, around the same time as Rabbit Fur Coat. A few of them are even on youtube.

While on youtube, I found this video:

First preview of Acid Tongue:

Rabbit Fur Coat”, with its precise intimacy, felt, for all its brilliance, like a boutique side-project. “Acid Tongue”, in contrast, is on a much bigger scale. You get the impression that this is where Lewis’ focus is now – that if Rilo Kiley still exist, then they’re far from her number one priority these days. Fine by me: as “Acid Tongue” proves, Jenny Lewis is better off on her own.

They may suggest it isn't as strong as the first album, but from the looks of the 'guest stars' it will be very interesting.  I also like how it still sorta tilts towards the 'country' sound of rabbit fur coat.

Though I like her alt-country songs, I'd prefer her going back to her indie rock roots.

It wasn't really an indie rock album, however. And the best songs, "the Angels Hung Around" and "Under the Blacklight" were more acoustic alt-country. I'm thinking of songs like "Spectacular Views," "Execution of All Things," "A Better Son/Daughter," "Wires and Waves," etc.

3 songs in, I really like it, its definitely got this sorta late night music feel to it. I can imagine listening to this while kicking back on a saturday night. I also like its contrast in tone from her first CD, but it isn't so daring as to leave me wondering who I am listening to.

Overproduced is a kind of nebulous criticism. And it's the opposite sound for which she was aiming. She wanted the album less polished and produced than "Under the Blacklight." "Acid Tongue" was recorded in just three weeks, and many of the songs were recorded live.

Well to be fair I was using overproduced in place of 'hollywood and not indie'. Im not sure what 'indie' sounds like - I always assumed it had more to do with the label and less to do with the music.

I'd recommend that you first download "The Execution of All Things" or "More Adventurous."

I still think that's a weak criticism on the magazine's part.

I dont agree with it, im not sure what they mean by 'indie' sound. The Shins? They still sound the same as when they were 'indie' and they aren't 'indie' anymore. Its just kinda a bizzare elitist criticism.

I'll second More Adventurous, my fav Rilo album.

I miss the more introspective, angst-ridden lyrics and the more exciting pop/rock sound of Rilo Kiely. For the most part, "Acid Tongue" sounds very sparse and repetitive; many of the minimalist ballads just don't to go anywhere. The minimalist sound works at times ("Blacksand," "Pretty Bird," "Acid Tongue," "Sing A Song For Them") and other times it doesn't ("Bad Man's World," "Godspeed," "Trying My Best To Love You"). The more energetic songs are great, but occasionally run too long ("Jack Killed Mom" and especially "The Next Messiah"). Overall, this makes for an uneven album that can get a bit dull.

Malek wants  more rock, some angst, and a little swearing.

3.25/5

The Execution of All Things >> More Adventurous >>> Rabbit Fur Coat > Take-Offs and Landings >> Acid Tongue > Under the Blacklight > The Initial Friends EP ("Frug" notwithstanding )

Pitchfork's review is out today.

The reviewer seems to agree with me that Lewis' shift from indie pop/rock and alt-country to more conventional, older genres is ill-advised. And, while much of the material on the album is listenable, it's pretty dull.
