NiGHTS PS2 Remake thread of Hm, not bad
« on: February 27, 2008, 11:08:23 PM »
So I got this last night. It's actually pretty good and playable enough on my projector (hold down X+Tri on bootup to enable 480p mode). It feels weird playing it with the PS2 pad because there's more travel to the sticks, but eventually I got the hang of it.

Pros
+Retextured/remodeled graphics look very true to the style (unlike several other Sega Ages remakes we shall not mention) and push out the clipping plane a bit
+No Saturn-style texture warping horror
+Music sounds really good
+Includes Xmas NiGHTS!
+Movies are higher-res than the Saturn's Cinepak monstrosities
+NiGHTS doesn't talk

Cons
-Original "Sega Saturn Dream" mode reminds you just how hideously ugly the game was
-Game restarts after you clear each stage (I think the Saturn one did the same thing)
-PS2 triggers aren't analog -- does this affect tricks?

All in all, it's pretty impressive 'cos NiGHTS pushed the Saturn's fucked up hardware really hard and porting it to PS2 was probably a bitch. If you kind of liked NiGHTS and your Saturn is broken (thanks to MrSingh's modchip) it's probably worth the $30 or so.

Oh snap, I didn't realize they bumped up the gfx.

Is it coming to US?

I don't think it's coming out in the USA (according to Kohler's blog anyway)

I like to refer to the remade version with new graphics as "rose-colored" mode, because you play it and you're like "Yeah, that looks about how I remember it." Then you play the Saturn mode once and you're like "OH GOD SOMEONE VOMITED ON MY EYEBALLS" and never play that mode again.

I don't feel like ordering this, but I'll probably snag it if Pink Godzilla gets it in stock.

If it did, I wouldn't know, as I only ever played NiGHTS with the regular Saturn pad (late to the party, I was).

As the game was totally playable with a regular Saturn pad, I'd imagine they did not include analog trigger based tricks.  Emulating an analog stick with a pad was certainly possible, but analog trigger based actions would be very tough to use with digital buttons.  Of course, the PS2 pad DOES have pressure sensitive buttons all around, so if it did use such actions, they probably COULD pull something off.

What's the framerate on this?  Did they shoot for 60 fps or go the lazy route?

PS1/Saturn games still look good to me (of course I've never played a PS2/Dreamcast/Gamecube/Xbox game)

What, seriously?  You've never actually tried a game from the previous console generation?  What about the current gen?

I can't imagine anyone thinking PS1 and Saturn games were still nice looking, to be honest.  Even when they were still in their prime, I knew they were ugly and pixelated.

Yeah, 3d games did not look good for awhile.  The transition from 2d to 3d games was very rough.  Some sprite based games are pretty timeless graphically.

Now that I think about it, I guess I did play Guitar Hero PS2 once at a party, and I played Jeanne D'Arc on PSP for about half an hour.  Other than that, the most advanced game hardware I've tried is DS and N64.  I've read a lot of FAQs and walkthroughs for PS2 games though, so I can still critique their balance and mechanics.

I thought the pixelation on PS games wasn't necessarily a bad thing, added character in some cases.

I thought the triggers on the Saturn 3d pad weren't analog?  I thought it was a big enough deal that the controller had one analog component.

I think the PS2's shoulder buttons/triggers are analog as well.

Yup, we are both right on all counts:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_console_controllers

Saturn:  Only analog stick, no analog buttons.
PS2:  Has analog triggers, not that it matters in the case of NiGHTS, since the Saturn didn't.

May I ask why you opted to stick with older hardware?  It honestly makes no sense to me.

I stopped playing games for a long time and now I don't have a TV, or a place to put one.  I'll probably buy a PSP at some point.

You could always buy a PC monitor and use it with either an XBOX360 or PS3.

Yeah, I figure there's probably some VGA adapter solution, but I haven't looked into that yet (other than confirming you can't get them at Fred Meyer).  I still wouldn't get 360/PS3 yet though, as I'd never pay more than $150 for a game machine.

'rose colored mode' sounds about right -- looks like a pretty big update that manages to be unobtrusive. i was never a huge nights fan, but i might toss this into my next play-asia order
