Gundam Musou Special (PS2): The REAL Dynasty Warriors Gundam?!
« on: February 29, 2008, 06:14:34 AM »
I went out to pick up Space Invaders on DS today and noticed that Gundam Musou Special also came out.  I sold off the original on PS3 pretty quickly and had been wanting to give it another chance on 360, but the price on the game here is still high.  Special *NEW* at a local shop was cheaper than the 360 version used.   :lol  So I went and took shitty Lost Planet PS3 and two older PS2 games, sold them off, got bonus cash for having three games, and ended up with a cool 9600 yen.  (4000 for LP alone...fuck awesome!)  PS2 GUNDAM GET.

So you Gundam Musou veteans, fill me in here.  Am I right on this being the new content?

-Two new suits (Sengokuden and Mk II, OR is that "Sengokuden Mk II," meaning just one suit?  This is the original Musha Gundam type suit I'm talking about, but it's black with swords)
-New stories for certain characters
-Musou Match mode added
-Shotdown Match mode added

I haven't even taken it out of the wrapper yet, but it looked pretty nice on display.  It looks like the original Musha Gundam is now unlocked from the start and has its own original story mode.

Went and pre-ordered Musou Orochi 2 for PS2 and Samurai Warriors 2+XL for 360 while I was there.  KOEI HAS MADE ME THEIR BITCH.

You put in so much time in the first version that there's really no point in bothering unless this game comes Stateside for real cheap.  I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't get released outside of Japan like DW5 Special was for the 360.

The port is really, really good though.  Ultra-smooth framerate so far; really the biggest downgrade visually to me is the ground textures; they're a blurry mess but the game is nice and playable.  All the options and menus are in English, dialogue is in Japanese.  This would make for a good PSP port like Musou Orochi.

The Musou Gundam indeed is playable in original mode right from the start, sans pilot.  "He" seems to talk for himself.  He's also HUGE compared to all the other mechs...was this the same in the original versions?  He almost kinda dwarfs the enemies.

43 hours so far! Musou Gundam was big in the first one too. I never really liked his design, i'd rather have a Gundam Musou II with SEED gundams. I want 08th Team gundams but there are some complications as the Gundams in 08th team are ground only, so the space missions wouldnt work without changing gundams...add to that I BELIEVE 08th team takes place around the same time as the original Gundam show, which brings some gundam design inconsistancies to the table.

I WOULD buy a PSP port. Im going to grab Orochi PSP as Drinky has said the juggling crap is toned down a lot, and thats what pissed me off.

Musou Orochi PSP is sooooooo good.  The draw distance is N64-awful, but it keeps everything playing nice and smooth.  I'm trying to unlock NeNe now on the Wei campaign.  DAMN IT'S HARD!

I'm skipping Gundam Musou Special, but I'd be all over the extra stuff if they released it via PSN as downloadable content.

I'd rather all those piles of shit be kept away from Musou

If they're gonna add new mecha, they should be from Gundam 00 and Gundam F91 and Char's Counterattack and Victory Gundam.

Please, no more horrible Seed designs

The ethos behind making a Gundam in the Seed series seems to be: Take a generic Gundam body and then give it a crazy backpack - wings or a flying saucer or half of an airplane or some crazy shit like that.

DEAR SIR,

HAVING READ YOUR RESPONSE ENTITLED "THESE THINGS HAVE SCALE GOOD SIR, I APPLAUD THE DESIGNERS OF THE ACE SERIES WHO ACTUALLY RESPECT SAID SCALE," I FELT A NECESSARY RESPONSE TO SAID INQUIRY WAS INDEED IN ORDER.  THEREFORE ON THIS DAY, THE FIRST OF MARCH, TWO-THOUSAND EIGHT, I SUBMIT MY REPLY FOR YOUR APPROVAL:

GOOD SIR.  THESE WORKS OF GIANT METAL MEN, THESE MOBILE ARMOURS.  THEY ARE INDEED A WORK OF FANTASY.  THEREFORE, ONE CAN SCALE OR CHANGE THEM TO ANY ACCEPTABLE LEVEL.  IT IS ONLY LEFT TO THE MIND TO SHAPE THE VERY APPEARANCE.  THEREFORE GOOD SIR, AS THE RUFFIANS MIGHT SAY, "NO, U."

GOOD DAY, SIR.

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN,

HAVING READ A REPLY ON THE INTERNET FORUM EVILBORE: RON PAUL IS MY ANTI-DRUG'S GAMING SUB-FORUM (HEREAFTER TO BE REFERRED TO AS "EB") TO A TOPIC REGARDING GUNDAM MUSOU SPECIAL (PS2) WHICH RHETORICALLY ASKS WHETHER IT IS THE REAL DYNASTY WARRIORS GUNDAM WHICH SAYS THAT:

"THESE WORKS OF GIANT METAL MEN, THESE MOBILE ARMOURS.  THEY ARE INDEED A WORK OF FANTASY."

INDEED!  AND WHAT GOOD IS A FANTASY IF IT DOES NOT HAVE SOME INTERNAL LOGIC WHICH ITS MAKERS ADHERE TO?  WHAT MANNER OF RANK IDIOCY IS IT WHEN A 15 METER ROBOT AND A 7 METER ROBOT (THE RX-78-2 GUNDAM AND THE DUNBINE FROM MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM AND AURA BATTLER DUNBINE, RESPECTIVELY) ARE DEPICTED AS BEING OF THE SAME SCALE? IT IS TO LAUGH, SIR! WHY, A CURSORY EXAMINATION OF SAID ROBOTS' COCKPITS WOULD LEAD ONE TO BELIEVE THAT THE PILOT OF THE DUNBINE IS SOME SORT OF MONGOLOID GIANT.  WHICH, HAVING SEEN THE SERIES MYSELF, SIR, I CAN ASSURE YOU: HE IS NOT!

AS SUCH, THE REQUEST THAT SCALE SHOULD BE IGNORED IS COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY PREPOSTEROUS AND DESERVES ONLY THIS REPLY: "HAH!"

GOOD DAY.

I'd like to see Koei team up with Bandai again to make a Super Robot Wars Musou game.  Why only Gundams?   :)

Another Century's Episode uses mecha of varying size, so I don't see why a Musou-styled game wouldn't work.

Yeah, but Super Robot Wars are grid-based strategy games. They don't really allow you to have control over your characters in an action game.

To get this thread back on track, I've been playing Gundam Musou Special for the past couple of hours and holy shit it is fuckawesome.  This is actually the first Dynasty Warriors game I've played too.  I'm having a lot o fun with it.  Currently I'm playing with Loran Cehack in original mode, but I'll probably switch to Domon Kasshu soon.  Haven't even checked official mode yet. :hyper

I've gotten some skills with Loran already - luckily they're written in katakana so I can figure out what they do (more or less).

If this comes out in the US, I'll buy the US version as well.  I can't really tell how big a hit the graphics took on my TV.  Obviously the ground textures are much worse than the PS3 version...

BTW, to address Lyte Edge's point about the Musou Gundam...this particular character comes from an old SD manga series that re-cast all the Gundam robots as samurai and shoguns and whatnot.  There were no "pilots" inside them, the mecha were actual characters.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Musha_Gundam

This is actually a somewhat popular subset of Gundam fandom, though I've never been into it myself.

Did you ever play Real Robot Regiment?  I hear it's a squad-based 3D beat-'em-up and it might be kind of what you're looking for, though I'm sure it's not nearly as good as a Musou game.

So I was playing Original Mode with the Turn A and got to the second stage - suddenly there was an avalanche that blocked part of the map, and after that got cleared up, the Master Gundam showed up somewhere (Master Asia was talking, but I didn't see the M.G. anywhere so I guess it was on a different field) and suddenly all the fields became reversed (blue ones changed to red, red ones changed to blue). WTF?  I have never bothered to play a Musou game before, so I dunno wtf is going onnnnnnnnn.

You should get Super Robot Wars Scramble Commander or whatever it's called. The RTS Super Robot game.

Post impressions of Real Robot Regiment when you get it, I wanna know if it's worth spending ten bucks on.

Also, Gundam Musou Special is OMGGGGGGGG AWESOME.  I've played through the first stage of every dude in original and official mode so far, and just beat the Turn A's second stage last night (it's very weird, and my Japanese wasn't nearly good enough to figure out why the fields kept switching back and forth from blue to red, other than the possibility of BETRAYALTON from the Titans).  I may have to check  a FAQ for it.

Frame rate is rock-solid, this is a very nice-looking game.  It's actually a perfect counterpoint to Climax U.C., which focused on shooting (whereas this one concentrates more on close combat).  I'm guessing the PS3/360 versions didn't have a Musha Gundam story mode, since the Musha Gundam Mk. II features prominently in his story mode.

I'd like to see the next Gundam Musou feature stuff from Char's Counterattack, 8th MS Team, War in the Pocket, and (hopefully) F91 and Crossbone Gundam.  And then for original mode they could add stuff from Gundam X, Seed and 00.

Have you played through a battle, at least?  How hard are they to comprehend with minimal Japanese language skills?

You shipped it to the school's address this time, right?  Did they give you an estimate of when it might arrive? :hyper

BTW, you've played through Gundam Musou, right?  Could you tell me if you can use the mecha from original mode in official mode?  Is there a way to switch pilots and mecha?
