It's got imperialism, culture wars, betrayal, plausible tragedy, genuinely evil villains, realistic love stories, a healthy dose of humor and an epic battle. It was the last RPG I've played that felt like the story wasn't written by some Japan-obsessed 14 year old

I'd argue Phantasy Star 2 and many of the Dragon Quest games fall into this category (not completely distinguished mentally-challenged stories). I quite like Lost Odyssey's, at least the 1000 Years Of Dreams.

Final Fantasy VI is up there, but Final Fantasy VIII is up there for me too, along with Suikoden I-III and Chrono Trigger.

The Dragon Quest series is pretty good too, especially VII.

If we're talking about rpgs as a whole, I'd also include Planescape: Torment and Baldurs Gate II and the Fallout games.

But yeah um...aside from these games, I can't think of any rpgs that have good stories. I'm not too sure about Lost Odyssey yet because I haven't beaten it, but I think the game would be on this list if they had the story written by the dude who wrote the 1000 years of dreams.

as much as i like suikoden, the story is usually the same.

shota kid gets out of town, find castle, get strategy guy, defeat evil empire.

some betrayal here and there blah blah blah shota loli, done.

though suiko3 was kinda different thanks to the 3 POVs.

well it's different from other jrpgs. I like the war shit and fucking people up. And the people you fight are rarely evil! They're just people fighting for things they believe in. What I like about Suikoden is that it's not so black and white.

Throw Panzer Dragoon Saga into the list of good jrpg stories.

ff6 is one of the more distinguished mentally-challenged ff titles: evil clown uses powers of magic and technology to destroy the world just 'cuz! throw in some underdeveloped characters, manufactured maudlin moments, and goonball animu convention, and you have a pretty embarrassing entry.

First off, there aren't any "unwritten" rules. We've stated time and time before that any NSFW images must be linked to in spoiler tags. If one numbskull gets away with it, it doesn't mean you have free reign to fuck over folks at work.

Second, I don't think Joe meant to destroy lives. I'll look into making NSFW image links easier to defend against, but - guess what - there has to be a degree of alertness to browsing at work. We cannot control everything that everyone posts at any given time. Even if someone did it on purpose to fuck with everyone (read: synbios), we can only react to the incident.

FF6 is still my favorite Final Fantasy game. So awesome. Hopefully it get released on VC or something. Crappy TOSE ports don't count.

Dirty poor confession:

I played the game in high school for the SNES. I was a freshman or sophomore and couldn't work at the time, so I couldn't afford to buy a copy--at 70 bucks it was also very expensive for videogame. I actually rented the game from my local mom and pop rental video store. However, every time I would re-rent the game my old file would be erased. I must have played that game from the beginning over 10 times until I finally completed it.

rman: when i frist got my psx I didn't have a memory card for a whole month or two.

I kept starting FFVII over and got further and further without a card. The furthest I got was the Shinra building.

When I finally got my memory card, I jet right through Midgar on to Kalm, and finally Junon in like a goddamn day.

I hadn't played a game that much at the time.

I didn't make use of my psp's sleep mode until recently tbh, and I only do it because I need to go somewhere and I want to continue playing later but can't save.

I guess I'm used to stuff like that because I didn't grow up with fucking saved games since NES and Genesis games rarely ever had save files.
