FOR THE EMPEROR! (Dawn of War: Soulstorm)
« on: March 13, 2008, 07:05:43 PM »
So I haven't made a new PC gaming thread here in some time thanks to my rampant hillary-whoring on like four different sites and via email. So I figure I'd make one since i have been playing  A FUCK AWESOME (at least for me) expansion again this March courtesy of now-defunct Iron Lore and RTS-experts Relic in Dawn of War: Soulstorm.

Now I admit the main reason I bought this was because A) I had played through the Dark Crusade campaign like five times (as Tau, Necron, Space Marines, Chaos and Eldar) and wanted MORE W40K grand campaign goodness, and B) it's got the SISTERS OF BATTLE ,crazy ass fundie nuns with powered armor and tons of flamethrowers:

Yeah I know the game is pretty dated at this point but I don't really care. The game plays great still, the new sides found a way to be different (SoB is all about customizing squads for max effect, Dark Eldar, the other faction, is all about breaking squads through morale damage and good combat micro).

The single-player is pretty much more of the same as Dark Crusade, to the point of being a reskin. The stronghold missions are the high point, but everything else is a decent skirmish and I'm OK with that. Story isn't there but really does it matter? Warfare in 40K doesn't need a backdrop or story, the different factions are at the point where they beat the piss out of each other just because it's the natural order of the universe. No story=no big deal.

Flying units are sorta MEH, they should have made it work like COH where air units come in,do some stuff, and then leave instead of being a controllable unit-this is a game of ground pounding and it's best when it's just infantry and a few vehicles.

Anyway not an A+ effort so far, or really even a B, but i've played like 15 hours of it since picking it up. It has a stupid high price tag, so you might want to wait until next week ($28 at Circuit Shitty) or just wait until it bombas and pick it up from a clearance rack. Just make sure to grab it at some point if you are a DOW fan, as it really is a lot of new content for a game that is still a ton of fun, three expansions later.

get C&C3 and play it on easy. It basically assumes U R NOOB and is a good intro to RTS gaming-and it's a damn fun game to boot.

If you had fun with it, there's no reason why you couldn't pick up and enjoy dawn of war without issue on the PC. It's actually easier to micromanage stuff than C&C3 is, and the only boggling thing about it is the huge numbers of sides and units in DOW at this point.

I need to get this eventually but I heard it doesn't add much over the last expansion.
